Stayed here on a business trip. I was very pleased with my room. Typically I don't care about the decor of a hotel room BUT this room had character. Bed was cozy. The room has a steamer rather and Iron, a bath robe for use, in room coffee and bottled water at a cost and a mini frig. The hotel has a court yard café that provided drinks and bites. There was also an indoor bar and café that has drinks and light meal items such as sandwich's, salads and soup. I saw a sign for a restaurant that should be open at the end of 2021. Very charming place to stay.

Beautifully restored old hotel in the center of downtown Merced. Merced has needed a nice hotel for some time (most or Holiday Inn/Hampton Inn class). Rooms are small but tastefully done. Ours had a record player and a Frank Sinatra album to listen to. The on site restaurants consist of a prix fixe dinner place, a courtyard with a limited menu (10 items total) and a coffee bar that also has very limited menu (think breakfast sandwiches and avocado toast). Certainly no free coffee anywhere. This is a Hyatt property and the development company owns most of the block and are doing a nice job of gentrifying the area. Here's what to expect:
Pros
Beautifully renovated old hotel
Friendly front desk and valet staff
Great downtown location
Hyatt property (easy reservations, points)
Cons
Small rooms
No closet, only hanging rack
No counter space in bathroom
Restaurants have extremely limited menus (only salad I could find was a Ceasar in all the restaurants)
No coffee except at coffee bar restaurant (which opens at 7am)

Hi Jim S, Thank you for staying at El Capitan Hotel on your recent stay in the Central Valley. WE genuinely appreciate your detailed reviewed and will be sharing your comments and suggestions with the team. It looks like you stayed in one of our standard historic rooms as they tend to run a little smaller with limited counter space. In the future, book one of our deluxe rooms as they are bigger and the counter space is more than ample. We do offer in room coffee in all our rooms as a pour over coffee options and I am sorry to hear you missed it in your room as the coffee is quite delicious. We sure hope you will give us another opportunity the next time you are in Merced.

This hotel is an exceptional place to stay in the central valley of California. The staff here has obviously been trained to make your stay here enjoyable. The rooms have everything that you need, including pour over coffee pots in the rooms, which I have never seen in a hotel before.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling through here.

The El Capitan is amazing. The staff are cheerful and smiling. Everything is spotless and the attention to detail in cleaning and decorating was beyond expectation. I loved the individualism in the decorations. It was luxury in the Central Valley that I have never seen at a hotel.

The hotel was beautiful, and we were excited about staying. The rooms were great - very vintage and very well done. However, our room had outside windows, and you hear everything outside , from hot rodders to alarms being set off in the parking garage to people yelling outside. They compensate by placing ear plugs in your room. What they need is triple pain windows. I hear zero noise at the Grand Hyatt at SFO and hotels in Times Square - I expect the same from a Hyatt in Merced.

We were attending a UC Merced Graduation and booked a Junior Suite at El Capitan Hotel. The Junior Suite was perfect for our family of 4. The room was modern yet warm, spacious, and overall great! All of the staff were welcome and kind. You can tell there's a lot of attention to detail as soon as you step into the lobby. The food was delicious! We had dinner at the Rainbird, which was superb, and also at The Mainzer (part of the hotel but a few blocks down) which was fantastic. If you're very hungry and want comfort food, go to The Mainzer. If you want an experience, go to Rainbird- but don't bring the kids because they don't have anything they'll eat unless your kids have highly refined palates and will eat anything put in front of them. To Rainbird's credit, they made my son an off-the-menu grilled cheese which the whole table helped him eat and really enjoyed! We also grabbed a quick breakfast at Native Son; skip the Starbucks and hang out here instead. The last hotel we stayed at was also a Hyatt Property (the pricey and highly disappointing Andaz Mayakoba) and the room and hotel itself was better in just about every way (I said what I said). A couple things: it's a little loud at night. A train goes by, a couple times each night it seems and traffic noise is easily heard as well. There's not much the hotel can do so bring earplugs or a sound machine. This is a small town and I think the best place to be located in Merced. There's shops and restaurants and wine bars along Main Street and it's worth taking a stroll. They're working hard to breath life into downtown so support them! Merced, some might say, is in the "middle of nowhere" and if that's so, then the El Capitan Hotel was a perfect, little oasis.

Clean hotel and front desk personnel were very welcoming. Each time we went into or out of the hotel, the Valet person opened the door for us.

There were a pair of earplugs on the nightstand (there should have been two pairs). There has to be a train go thru town every hour or so! And, Tuesday mornings must be garbage day, due to the very load trucks in early morning. Plus, the people above us were very walking around their room extremely early and with heavy feet pounding.

Personally, I’d avoid Merced all together!

I loved this hotel the moment I walked through the doors. Staff is friendly and check in with Hyatt app was flawless. The hotel is GORGEOUS and located central to everything downtown. The courtyard was a great spot to have a glass of cava and finish some work in the fresh air. All food was fantastic. The interior of the hotel is beautiful and the thoughtful touches such as record players in the room and pour-over coffee were top notch. One major drawback here is the noise. The walls are paper thin. You can hear your neighbors talking to one another in the next room. You can hear street noise ALL NIGHT. There were ear plugs on the bed side table--and they are absolutely necessary to sleep. Even with those in, the noise was loud enough to keep me awake. The combination of ear plugs and white noise app helped, but it certainly wasn't the best night's sleep. Next time, I'd ask for a room overlooking the alley away from busy Main St and M Street.

The hotel provides a fun and hipster experience. Room and bathroom was very clean and bed sheets are so comfortable.

Upon arrival, Christel at the front desk met and greeted us with enthusiasm. She also personally walked us to an alternative room setup as we noticed there were daytime sounds from the courtyard and we were concerned it would continue into our sleeping time in the later evening. We ultimately chose the room we were originally assigned as we were told sounds end at 9 pm which was perfect given that we would spend our days in Yosemite.

Adrianna, Christel’s front desk partner, was professional and cheerful to us during our two night stay answering all my questions in person and on the phone. She was such a life saver given that after I checked out and drove away, I realized 15 min later that I left two of my pricey Yeti thermos in the mini fridge. She rescued them and waited in the heat of Merced for us to return to personally make sure we picked them up and not some strangers.

The valet / gentlemen were always friendly as kind enough to open the front doors no matter the hour.

Truly a great experience.

My wife and I booked a stay at the El Capitan as a stop on our way to and from Anza Borrego State Park. Both our rooms on this trip were super clean and we both liked the way the rooms were decorated. We had a late dinner and breakfast at the Native Son where you can also get something to drink. Our food was surprisingly good and it made us wonder what the food at the Rainbird restaurant was like. The staff was very nice and welcoming.
The only thing to be aware of is the hotel was renovated very nicely but the walls are a bit thin. The train noise is, as other have stated, pronounced as they pass through town. You can hear other guests in adjacent rooms but all in all we were lucky and both times had a relatively quiet stay.
To sum it up, we stayed at six other hotels on this trip and we feel the El Capitan was one of our favorites and a great value to boot. I would the recommend the El Capitan to anyone who finds themselves in the Merced area.
