Nestled in La Jolla, the Inn by the Sea earns rave reviews for its nostalgic charm and comfortable, if slightly dated, accommodations. Its prime location near beaches and local dining is a highlight for many guests, who also appreciate the hotel's reasonable pricing and value-added amenities, such as ocean view rooms and a heated pool.
The hotel's staff is widely commended for their professionalism and friendliness, adding to the positive experience. While rooms are celebrated for their cleanliness and maintenance, some visitors note small bathrooms and dated decor.

Detailed Reviews

Where to start with this lovely hotel smack in the middle of La Jolla. The Inn by the Sea is centered around everything you will want to see in La Jolla. Within walking distance of beaches, swimming with the seals, kayaking through hidden caves, boating, the most fabulous restaurants, and nightly entertainment. The views of the water and sunsets from your balcony are stunning. The comfort and cleanliness of this hotel is truly beyond anything we have come across in La Jolla, and we have stayed at some of the "very best" according to trip reviews. Housekeeping staff you do an AMAZING job of keeping the hotel looking beautiful and clean. The pool area is not only incredibly clean, but very welcoming with all the loungers with lovely seaside pillows, the pool is heated to a very comfortable setting. The complimentary coffee room is such a nice added luxury; with multiple types of coffees, teas and hot drinks, along with some light snacks that you can purchase. From the check-in to the check-out every single person employed at this hotel was kind, friendly, courteous, respectful and knowledgeable about the area and things to see and do. The rooms are done perfectly with an oversized mini refrigerator, coffee, ironing board, balcony table and chairs, and toiletries. The beds and pillows are VERY COMFORTABLE, along with the lovely sheets and bedspread. My husband and I can't say enough about this wonderful hotel which is managed to perfection. We will be forever customers, now that we know you are in existence. Thank you, for being a Diamond amongst the other gems in La Jolla. Elaine & Lee M

Spent 4 nights at the Inn by the Sea with my adult daughter. it is definitely a place I would stay again. The location is perfect. We did not move the car almost the whole time we were there. The staff was great...from the front desk check in, housekeeping, maintenance and pool staff (they were regularly checking the pool water quality). We had a room on the 5th floor over the parking lot close to the pool. We did not have any issue with noise and often had the balcony doors open. We could see the ocean from our balcony which was delightful. The lounge by the pool is open 24 hrs so if you need a snack, cold drink, coffee, tea or hot chocolate it is there. The coffee is Seattle's best and it was delicious. They also set up coffee in the lobby each morning. Can also make coffee in the room. The fridge was huge and cold. Beds clean and comfy! A friend from LA booked a room and joined us for a couple of days. Thanks for a great stay.

We are repeat visitors to the Inn by the Sea, we love the location and the friendly staff and can forgive the dated feel.
Our disappointment on this visit relates to the daily servicing of the rooms or lack of it. We stayed there for a week, the room wasn't serviced on the first day and we asked at the front desk. We were advised there are staff shortages (not uncommon) and were advised servicing would be every second day. On the third day we asked again and the room was then serviced, and again on 6th day.
Essentially the hotel doesn't have the staff to service rooms daily and whilst fresh towels and coffee etc were available at the front desk this is not the service we expect at a hotel of this standard. No reduction in rate was offered to recognise the hotels saving in staff costs and had we known in advance we would have stayed elsewhere or rented an apartment where we would expect to service the room ourselves.

A super hotel. When you walk down the corridor and every member of staff stays hello and genuinely smiles at you, you know that you feel truly welcomed.
The room was very specious and clean and we were blessed to have a ground floor room by the pool which was fabulous. We loved the pool area (Thank you for the beach balls!) which was very quiet, often we were the only people in it. The guest lounge and toilets by the pool were lovely, with some lovely touches such as fragrance sticks, lovely beachy touches etc. The pool towels were always well stocked, as were the tea/coffee/hot chocolates in the guest lounge.
They offered breakfast delivery from The Cottage, but as a budget conscious family from the UK, we opted walking two minutes across the road to the Brick and Bell ( Highly recommend the granola!)
The beach was only a 5 minute walk away. Super location for the beach, cove, seals, restaurants and access to motorway for SD.
Honestly, we could not have asked any more from this hotel; The friendliest service, warm welcome, clean large room and beautiful pool area.we were told by a local that it has been recently refurbished, our room was perfect.
Ps Thanks for the recycling bins by the pool, we are used to recycling everything, and your hotel was the first we had seen on our trip!

The upside first.. right in town and easy access to everything ! Big plus!
And now for the less fortunate things…. Unfortunately, when we arrived this past Saturday night the front desk seemed more interested in just getting us checked in than welcoming us or telling us where things were located. I would suggest bringing your own shampoo and soaps as those in the room were very sketchy and not enough for two, the showers drizzle ( yes we are in a drought but..) and lastly we were given the lightest of light coverlet to act as a blanket - bang for the buck? Nope. Remember, small things go a long way with customers

Thank You for taking the time in sharing your valuable feedback! We're glad you really enjoyed our proximity/location and having easy access to everything. On the other hand, it's very disappointing to see that you didn't have a great experience staying with us. It saddens us to know you lacked amenities in your room, the shower pressure was not up to your standards, and you didn't find the blanket to be warming. We are available 24/7 at the desk by dialing "0" and are always willing to deliver extra amenities. Also, inside every closet there is a wool blanket which provides extra warmth if needed, we also have complimentary heaters that we can provide for a toastier atmosphere. I have brought the shower pressure matter up to our chief engineer's attention and he will be following up with it. More importantly, I'm so sorry you didn't feel assured for by our staff and felt your check in process lacked attentiveness. It's incredibly important to us that our guests feel well taken care of and welcomed, I want to apologize sincerely that you did not. I have shared your comments with our staff so we can learn from what you experienced and improve our service moving forward. If you're ever back in town, we'd love to have the opportunity to provide you with the exceptional experience you deserve. Thank you for being our guest, it was a pleasure having you! Warmest regards, Inn by the Sea La Jolla

Possibly the only redeeming features of this hotel are its proximity to town and that the room seemed clean. Both are kind of a low bar though. When I arrived I was told my room had been cancelled. I hadn't cancelled my room so I have no idea why I was told that. The desk clerk then said she could rebook and I'd be put in an ocean view room. I thought perhaps I'd been upgraded because of their error. Not the case and my credit card was immediately charged $60 more than the standard room. When I got to the room, I saw that the "ocean view" meant that if you look past the big building and over the parking lot, you can kind of see some water. I told the front desk that I didn't want to pay for that category of room and rather than tell me to stay there and reduce the fee (which would have been the appropriate customer service response), they told me I could move to another room - as long as I could move my stuff no assistance from any hotel staff. They switched me to a room about 4 doors down on the same side (ie, it had the same view as the “ocean” room) so I'm not sure what people who take the higher category are paying for. That said, the shower was like a dorm room - hot one moment and ice cold the next. Finally, when I checked out after my two night stay, my bill had a "no show" charge that was about 150% of the room rate. I pointed it out to the desk clerk who said they couldn't adjust it on the spot, which I told them seemed both odd and ridiculous since they were able to charge my credit card on the spot. After multiple emails over the next several days, they reversed the charge. No apology. No accommodation. Clearly no return.

Dear Sandy, thank you for your comments and recap of events you experienced. I would feel the same way if this happened to me. I am truly sorry we didn't get it right for you while you were here. Your reservation was made for the day prior to when you actually arrived so when this happens hotels always process this as a no show reservation and it's canceled in the system. When you came in the next day this is where we really made several errors. I apologize for all of this. I have reviewed your comments with the entire team as a learning tool so that they are better trained on how to better handle these circumstances. We could have done a much better job in delivering a much higher lever level of hospitality to you. I appreciate all your comments, they are very helpful to us. We wish you well.

The 2 star rating is based on cosmetic details, but let me tell you why I would stay here again. The location is great for walking around La Jolla. The staff is cheerful and helpful, although they are understaffed, due to Covid. The room had all the needed features, except a microwave. Heavy black out drapes kept the room dark for sleeping. They provided a hair dryer, magnifying makeup mirror, a comfortable bed with lots of pillows and extra blankets, plenty of outlets for charging electronics, good t.v., table and chairs. I did not use the poo;nares, but walked through and it looked nice. There was a balcony from which we could see a sliver of sea and enjoy the sunset sky. So why only 2 stars? Location, while great for accessing LaJolla, is definitely not BY the sea. Very few rooms have actual sea views, and those are over roofs. Carpets were stained both in room and in hall. There was a large patch of some kind in the tub which meant it could only be used for showers. The handles were difficult to work. The microwave brought to the room on request was ancient, dirty and chipped. We were there a week. Because they are currently short staffed, rooms are only cleaned every three days, and then sheets were not changed. The claim that the infrequent cleaning is due to safety concerns is lame. They did not make adjustments like providing extra coffee and shampoo, etc. without asking. However, they supplied extra towels on request. The inattention to details made me concerned about the sanitation of the facility. However, I’m a budget traveler, and if I wanted to stay in La Jolla, this is a less expensive option. However, I probably would opt to stay in another part of San Diego.

We stayed 9 nights. It was a family vacation (2 adults 2 teenagers). The room is a typical hotel room with 2 queen beds. We were upgraded to the 5th floor. We had a view of the pool and partial view of the ocean. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony. This hotel is in a great location - just a block away from the water where you can check out the tide pools, the cliffs, the coves (great snorkeling), the seals and watch the kayaks. I'm so glad I picked this hotel and not one in the city. The employees were very nice. The hotel was very clean. The beds were comfortable. The room was quiet. The neighborhood was quiet. We very much appreciated the coffee station, the filtered water on each floor, the clean pool and sitting area, the AC was quiet and easy to use. I was worried about the washroom from other reviews but it was fine. Not much pressure in the shower and a little dated but it was clean and it worked. I highly recommend this hotel.

Great hotel, close to the ocean, coffee shops, and restaurants! Has a nostalgic feel from the decor that was cozy. Staff was very friendly and helpful, provided toothpaste late at night when I realized I did not have any. There was a hair in the shower that was not mine but other than that, very clean.

Hi. The walk is approximately a block away. A very easy walk with little shops and things to see on the way.
no. you can do Supershuttle, or Uber/Lyft. Or the San Diego transit system (busses) if you like, and have the time. We have done all of them, other than Lyft, with no problems. If you look at Supershuttle online, then leave it, next time you're online you'll have a coupon code in an ad, showing up. Enjoy your trip.
