Nestled in a breathtaking location, The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay captivates guests with its ocean vistas and the enchanting sound of bagpipes at sunset. The property's cleanliness and spacious rooms receive consistent accolades, though a few guests suggest the rooms lack a certain pizzazz. While the upscale amenities add to the allure, some visitors mention the gym and spa could be improved.
While the service is generally regarded as excellent, occasional lapses and delays are noted. Despite the praise, the hotel's value is a point of contention for guests who find the costs steep, including dining and parking fees.

We booked a two-night stay midweek in late August at this Ritz-Carlton on the coast southwest of the San Francisco Bay area. This was northernmost part of a California coast driving trip from Los Angeles. I'm used to Southern California beaches being sunny and clear in late summer. While I understood that beaches further north were more often cooler and foggier, I was still surprised that the entire time we were in the Half Moon Bay area, we rarely saw the sun. We drove around to the north and south to visit other beach areas, tide pools, etc. They were lovely and mostly deserted; and always overcast.
The hotel itself is a classy-looking property that has a main building on a bluff overlooking the ocean, surrounded by a nice golf course, and additional "guest room" buildings further up, away from the coast. We had booked a guest room but were upgraded to a coastal view room on the third floor of the main building. The room was fairly roomy, had a nice gas fireplace, very comfortable sofa next to the picture window, and a nice view of the ocean and a bit of the beach and coastline beyond the golf course. (See photo) The bathroom was large, with a large tub, separate shower, and toilet behind a door.
Service, from the front desk to the parking valets, were uniformly excellent. We had an ample breakfast at the hotel's main restaurant one morning; it was expensive but typical for a resort. We might have considered additional meals there or at the outdoor casual lounge eatery but there was not much to see due to the persistent overcast weather. We chose instead to drive into Half Moon Bay town, a surprisingly laid-back village with many casual restaurants and shops.
The hotel has an indoor pool away from the main building but no outdoor one; this probably reflects that the area is just not sunny and warm enough on most weeks. in the outdoor common areas, there are instead several firepit seating areas, which are inviting on cooler/overcast days and nights.
The hotel has an interesting tradition: a lone bagpiper begins to play about an hour or so before sunset; he starts in the upper guest house area and eventually takes his place on the golf course green just above the coastal ridge. One can see the waves breaking beyond him as he plays. My photo frames the setting but also shows the clouds obscuring the setting sun.
My conclusion about this hotel is that it is very nice if you golf or want a quiet setting away from the city. But if you wanted classic oceanside views, a swimmable beach, and/or a resort-like pool setting, you will be disappointed.

We decided to take a spontaneous 1-night trip to Half Moon Bay for the annual Pumpkin Festival and to celebrate my daughter's 17th birthday. I let the hotel know through the app before arrival that it was my daughter's birthday and was hoping that they would acknowledge it in some small way upon check in. Well, it was definitely better than a small acknowledgement! When we first arrived we noticed a super cute, haunted house set up on the outside lawn for kids and adults alike to enjoy. As we pulled into the driveway we were greeted by a great valet team. Then as we stepped inside, we saw a beautiful display of fall leaves in the entryway, dangling from the ceiling. The woman at the reception was wonderful and thanked me for my Marriott Platinum Elite status and upgraded us to an ocean view King room on the top floor and wished my daughter a happy birthday. I am not sure if it was the birthday, my Marriott status, the short stay or good fortune but we ended up with a breathtaking corner room with unobstructed views of the ocean from one window and from another window, a view of the outside lounge, golf course and fire pits. The rooms have been recently remodeled, and the decor inside is so beautiful. We were getting ready to go outside and walk the grounds and catch the sunset when there was a knock on the door. A woman dropped off a gift bag with a RC Water bottle and a super thoughtful note! The outside bar is a perfect place to watch the sunset over the ocean, watch the golfers, and right before sunset, they have a bagpiper stroll the grounds.... so fun.
When we returned from dinner they had turned down the room and left delicious macarons and freshwater bottles by the bed. The TV was very large and the Nespresso machine was great. We were sad to leave the next day and definitely want to come back and try a firepit room. Like all RC's, the prices are high for drinks and food, valet, resort fees, etc but service was amazing, the location is stunning and they made my daughter feel so special on her birthday. Thank you Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay for an amazing experience!

They do just about everything right at The Ritz Carlton on the ocean at Half Moon Bay. Restaurant inside overlooking the Pacific Ocean and cliffs and the links golf course. Food hits the spot and the service is top notch as one would expect at a Ritz Carlton. But the winning play is to go to the outside cafe and sit in front of the fire pits and enjoy a cocktail and light lunch fare. Even on a grey cold day the fire pit will keep you warm. The food will satisfy. And the view and sound of the crashing waves will mesmerize. Watch out for golf balls as the 18th green of the Ocean Course is nearby and not everyone who pays the price for a round should be playing the course. And let’s be fair - the prices are not for the faint of heart here. If you have the means and inclination, recommend going with the Amex Platinum Fine Hotels program - gets you breakfast for 2 and $100 resort credit for the stay that you can put towards meals. If you’re going to splurge, hard to pick a better place than this to do it.

This is a less than stellar review based upon our recent stay and room assignment. My husband and I have stayed here prior and enjoyed our visit. This was a different story for us. We had a deluxe room. After all it is a pricey property in a beautiful location and how bad can the room view be? We were surprised that our room window was frosted over with no visible view at all room 518. This significantly reduced our desire to return. When I asked the desk staff about the situation they informed me that the situation required an upgrade of $300 per night per person an unacceptable amount for us. In addition our dinner meals were hit and miss with the prawns a miss and the lamb a win. Sorely disappointed.

We stayed twice at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay and there are some things you should know:
The good
Amazing location right by the ocean and short walk to a clean, and not crowded beach Beautiful property, great views from the rooms Fire pit rooms are perfect for private s’mores roasting with the kids or for relaxing outside with a beverage and in-room dining Great service at the main restaurant and Navio
The bad
It feels like they really put the emphasis on serving weddings and the wedding parties, and/or anyone with some event, corporate or otherwise. Sure, those tabs are larger and more income is made there, but for 1k+/night, you expect the best, and here you don't get it.
The ugly
The service is oddly unbearable at times. For instance, the housekeeping line is always busy, and worse, I called three times for extra towels and they never arrived. On the third call over a 45 min span, they claimed at the front desk that housekeeping said they already brought the towels. Not true and not worth arguing about. We never did get the towels. Turn down service. Again, you expect to get some fresh towels and the bed to be turned down, but the bathroom was ignored and it looked like someone had made out on the bed with rumpled, tossed pillows and blankets askew. Angry, racist golfers yelling at minority kids to stay clear of the public cart path yet not yelling at anyone else who also happened to be walking through there. No hot water for tea in the lobby the first morning we stayed. We asked the front desk, but no one ever showed up so we had to go elsewhere. Oddly long wait for restaurants with lots of open tables available. Maybe understaffed but more likely not as efficiently run as needed. The outdoor cafe near the wedding venue in back; it looks great. I wanted to take some shellfish and oysters back to the room because we were in a rush and of course those are the only items you can't order "to go". Not sure why - I mean, put the oysters on ice with the condiments and I can walk the plate to the room? Like no one (except staff) wearing a mask. Either make people wear them or drop the rule. Dozens of drunk people wandering around and some not drunk, just refusing to wear them.
Overall, the rooms are fine, beds comfy and bathrooms are nice. Some of the staff in the restaurants are super nice. But honestly, for the money you are much better off elsewhere. Unless you're getting married, part of the marriage party, part of a corporate event, or a big angry golfer with an attitude, you're better off just visiting this property during the day and taking in the views versus splashing the cash for overnight mediocrity.

We came here to celebrate my husbands birthday with our family. It seemed like the service has really gone down or perhaps the hotel was too crowded. Took us over an hour to get checked in after our time of 4 pm. It was difficult to get reservations at the restaurant - we had to wait even after we made a reservation. We could not get a spot for breakfast, the lines were out the door. The food was not good. The childrens' meal was off, both my kids threw up the food after. The lamb was chewy and overcooked. In plus points, the property is beautiful, the rooms were clean and the views were great. But overall, it did not feel like a luxury hotel experience because it felt like we were always hustling or waiting in line to get a room, get food, get service etc.

This was a bucket list hotel for me and I decided to go on my birthday with my girlfriend. It was a huge disappointment and a big waste of money. The hotel rooms weren’t anything special and cost us over $1,000.00 USD per night. On top of that you have a $65 valet fee and $65 resort fee. The pool and spa were under maintenance and the clubhouse was closed. We have stayed at way nicer hotel rooms oceanfront that are half the price. Next thing is the dining. The Navio restaurants brunch was booked out for a month, so we decided to go to the dinnner. $400+ bill for a 3 course dinner that left me hungry. It was a small appetizer, entree, then desert for $155 per person which turned into $200 per person after fees and tip. One of the waitresses was laughing and talking to the other wait staff after dropping off some silverware. It was upsetting and left a sour taste in my mouth. Then room service. The menu is ridiculously expensive. $105 for 2 breakfast items nothing fancy. 20% room surcharge for delivery and tip. Lastly some creep on our fooor was staring non stop at my girlfriend in the elevator. Then stopped in the hallway to stare at us more, I have never felt so uncomfortable. Thought he was a worker by how he was standing in the elevator but could have been a worker.!

Overrated and overpriced are the two best terms to describe this hotel.
It is an absolutely beautiful setting with great looking renovated rooms and amazing views if you’re lucky to get an ocean view, plus the restaurants are pricey but solidexperiences. However, that’s where the positives end.
When you first arrive, you are greeted with an undersized and disorganized front entry driveway. The valet/door staff are friendly, but utterly disorganized.
Then you get to a front desk while on the face of it they seem friendly, but otherwise it’s like interacting with robots that have been trained to monetize everything and lie to help in the effort to sell upgrades and add ons. Their front desk manager gives the impression that he would rather not particularly be dealing with guests. They won’t even take the time to explain what the resort fee includes. They hand you a QR code and just tell you to scan that.
Don’t even bother with Bonvoy membership at this property. They don’t care. They barely even deliver the minimum benefits of the program. Don’t even bother trying to get NUAs confirmed here. They make it look like they participate when they really don’t.
Then don’t try communicating with the Hotel via messaging in the Marriott app. You’ll be lucky to get a response in less than an hour and a half to two hours.
Then the fitness center doesn’t serve a purpose unless you like working out in a bit of a sauna. It seems like I do the air conditioning doesn’t work or they don’t turn it on.
Ultimately, this is not the luxury resort they make themselves out to be. The potential is there though. If you want a true luxury resort experience at a Ritz Carlton in California, go to Santa Barbara or Laguna Niguel.

We had the best experience at this property. Check-in was swift and friendly and we were extremely appreciative for the upgrade based on Bonvoy status and booking via AMEX FHR program. First impressions mean everything and the front staff were all so gracious and accommodating. The lobby area, main restaurant and grounds are all that one would expect from a very traditionally decorated Ritz Carlton property. Our ocean view room was roomy, but not exaggerated, tidy and the bathroom was classic Ritz with marble everywhere. Our only room complaint were the power outlets as they would not hold anything plugged in. We had to rotate phone chargers, computers and CPAP machines on the one plug that did work. I didn't mention this to management as I thought it was fairly minor, but it should be repaired.
The breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are good, but one might argue they are slightly limited. This was not an issue for our two night stay. Our dining experiences were all terrific, great service and the food was good. It's pricey, but this is a resort and there really are not off-resort options that are appealing.
If you are looking for a golf getaway, I hear the course is amazing. This would be a perfect golf vacation resort, which is really what this property is. For non golfers, you will be extremely pleased with the gorgeous setting, views and spa. If you do not golf, require tons of activities, can't sit still and need more action, this might not be the best spot for you.
We enjoyed the bar staff for evening cocktails and small bites each night, but I think it's a missed opportunity there was not live entertainment...Not required, but it would have been something to do/see in the evenings.
A few nit pics for this property....As a titanium member, lounge access is a perk. This hotel only operates the lounge during limited times, I think on the weekends. Also, this hotel does NOT honor the suite upgrade rewards as part of the Bonvoy program. We did receive an view upgrade, but were told our suite rewards were non applicable. Sort of a bummer, as I think there were plenty of options to upgrade, the property was not full. When asked about a firepit room, we were told they were available, for up to a $500/night up charge. Hmmm. Not worth it.
Petty nit pics aside, this is truly a lovely property and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and will likely return should we find ourselves heading towards Big Sur again. Maybe the lounge will be open then?

Absolutely wonderful property and staff. The golf course next door is also wonderful. The rooms are very nice although I was offered an upgrade and paid for it only to find out it was an accessible room and the bathroom to share with my wife becomes a lot more uncomfortable. My kids had the adjoining room and their bathroom was wonderful. We had the lower floor with a balcony and fire pit and the view is amazing. I really liked the hotel. Had dinner there twice and I wished they had a little larger menu but it was still enough and truly delicious, although like everything in the hotel it is quite pricey.
