The spa is great. The property beautiful. The casita suites are spectacular. About $1,600 a night - worth it. The food is just ok. The only negative was the staff. Got there a little early and waited, and waited, and there was no attempt to speed up housekeeping or accommodate an early arrival. On the way out, they balked at our request for a one hour late checkout. For these reasons, it gets 4 instead of 5 stars.

Response from Sean Damery, General Manager at Bernardus Lodge & Spa

Dear StephenRMorse, Thank you for your kind compliments of Bernardus Lodge & Spa. I am thrilled you enjoyed our spa, property and Villa Suite. I would like to address your feedback regarding check-in and give other travelers insight on this issue as well. I completely understand your intention to call ahead and let us know that you are arriving early, it is of course helpful, but it doesn’t always change things dramatically. We are a small property, with 73 rooms total. Out of those 73 rooms, we have 19 different room categories that are selected when booking. We aren’t a large chain with hundreds of rooms, each interchangeable with the next. Check-out time at Bernardus is 12pm – an option that most, if not all, of our guests like to take advantage of. As guests begin departing, our professional and tenured housekeepers come in. There are no cutting corners with this team, our reviews here are a testament of that. They take an incredible amount of pride in what they do and hold themselves to the highest of standards. Over half of our arrivals request early check in on a daily basis and although this team does their best to prioritize, often early arrivals are not accommodated. I realize that you would like to check-in early, but I know that you also want things done right. You can trust our team to do just that. For future travelers, we guarantee rooms at 4:00pm. Your room will have a chilled bottle of wine and artisan cheese waiting for you. We want your arrival to be perfect. I apologize for the inconvenience this had caused you and I hope for an opportunity to welcome you back. Regards, Sean Damery Regional Vice President and General Manager

As someone who has travelled the world, our stay at the Bernardus Lodge was one of the best we have ever experienced. The location, the facility, and the service were spectacular. We were there for a family wedding and spent a few extra days enjoying the pool, spa, bocce, and walking paths. A special thank you to Colleen Kelly, the Food and Beverage Manager who went out of her way to make all of us feel special, including bringing us snacks while we sat around the firepit. It was something she did on her own. Amazing place!

This was 4th stay at Bernardus Lodge and once again was perfect. Staff is amazing, food at Lucia was perfect and facility is top notch. The use of the complimentary Mercedes convertible made 17mile drive perfect. Can't imagine we would ever stay anywhere else when in the Carmel area

We've been to Bernardus about 5 times over the past few years, most recently in July and again for our last stay in October. The service has gone really downhill. The main issues were around the restaurant and continuous fails with meals arriving at the same time, having to wait 50 mins for breakfast when the restaurant was pretty empty, room service delays with no clear feedback on when the food might arrive and more. Related, the hotel and spa seem to be under separate management. When we had an issue with a spa service and related unknown charge, the person at the front desk said it wasn't his issue. After asking if he could call the spa, he begrudgingly did and eventually the charge was removed but in a very impolite way. When we checked out, the same person on the front desk didn't say one pleasantry (e.g., thanks for staying, come again soon, anything to make your stay better). For $1600+ a night, this is a far cry from what I would expect both of service, etiquette and overall experience. My advice - stay at Carmel Valley Ranch for a lower cost and better service experience.
