The Hotel Shattuck Plaza earns praise for its prime location near BART and UC Berkeley, with many guests appreciating its welcoming atmosphere and historic charm. Cleanliness is a highlight, with spotless rooms and commendable housekeeping. However, opinions on value are mixed, as some travelers feel rate hikes and expensive amenities don't match the level of service provided.
While rooms are generally celebrated for their comfort, issues with noise, maintenance, and reservations sometimes mar the experience. Staff service receives varied reviews, ranging from friendly and attentive to disappointing encounters.

I stayed one night for a business trip and overall the hotel and location were great.
The staff at check-in were friendly and courteous. There was complimentary water and cookies available - a nice touch. The overall hotel was old but nicely updated.
I had a king room on the second floor (217) and it overlooked the roof, interior rooms so it was quiet. The room was nice but some very minor picky things for me: the sink in the bathroom, while updated, the faucet was close to the (raised) bowl so it made it hard to wash my hands. I was confused as to why there was a bottle of conditioner and shower gel (mounted) by the sink area, while also having duplicate bottles (mounted) in the shower (with shampoo included)--seemed duplicative when lotion would have been a better option for the sink area. So, no lotion provided. Just my minor nitpick but not an overall indication of the hotel or my stay. While I don't drink coffee, there were coffee pods with mugs to drink from but if you want coffee to go, you'll have to go elsewhere.
There also didn't appear to be a lounge area aside from the restaurant/bar so there wasn't a place for me and my colleagues to wait/sit without feeling a need to buy a drink.
The location was definitely central but would still be cautious when walking around.

We were in town helping with a band who performed at a nearby venue. We arrived an hour prior to posted checkin time, expecting to just leave our bags at the desk while we went to lunch, but we were able to go on up to our room. The entire property is clean and updated, yet traditional and welcoming. And snickers bars and soda are my post show custom, so the sundries area was much appreciated. Would definitely return if ever in the area again.

Overall, had a great experience at Hotel Shattuck. Would stay here again!
The hotel is conveniently located in Downtown Berkeley, just steps away from the Downtown Berkeley BART station and is right next to an AC Transit bus stop. It’s also walking distance to UC Berkeley’s campus and there’s tons of restaurants a short walk away as well.
Upon checking in, we were greeted by Danny at the front desk. He was so friendly and let us know our room was upgraded. My fiancé and I stayed here for our anniversary and the hotel left us a complimentary bottle of wine to help us celebrate— such thoughtful touches!
The room was clean and plenty spacious for two people. The bathroom has toiletries from Elemis which was a nice touch and had a nice, not-too-fragrances smell to them. Our bathmat was a little tattered and did have a hole in it but everything in the room was clean and spotless otherwise. AC was also a bit noisy but did a good job at keeping us cool.
Overall, great experience!

Worst value of all time. Would have given zero stars but this app won't let me. Would NOT recommend. We paid $638.00 PER NIGHT (before taxes and fees). The room had not been cleaned - other than fresh sheets and towels. The bathroom light needed to be replaced when we arrived (burnt out), the door for the bathroom was completely broken, and the TV didn't work. There was a brown substance on the bathroom light switch, some on the floor, the wall, and toothpaste behind the sink in the bathroom. The windows were dirty, there was a dirty fork on the floor, and an unknown substance on the glass of the framed picture in the room. We got one wash cloth and two bath towels (2 adults booked the room for 2 nights) and the bathroom was tiny. The shower was so small we had to open the shower door to lather up because you couldn't move once you closed the shower door. There was NO counter space. The closet was tiny - the furniture is cheap, in poor condition. There is no parking - you have to use the parking garage across the street and the neighborhood is very sketchy.

This place seemed clean and the location is good if you want to be close to BART and/or UC Berkeley. They’ve done a decent job of updating a historic hotel but some of the typical historic hotel issues are still there - not much space in the bathroom and you’ll need a wall plug to charge your phone, no USB ports. The bed was much too soft. For 2 people we were given 2 bath towels and one hand towel for a 2 night stay - only got washcloths on request. The fitness room is very small. I packed my Peloton shoes because the hotel touted having a Peloton bike. But once I signed in it said the subscription had been canceled; the front desk had no idea what was up with that. And the pedals were apparently changed so my Peloton shoes couldn’t even be used. There’s also a Mirror fitness gadget in a corner without adequate room to use it. The final issue was out of the hotel’s control: the immediate neighborhood has declined. The Starbucks on the next corner sits next to several closed storefronts and no longer has any seating. We saw a couple of people on the street being hassled by people with obvious mental issues, and stepped around #2 in the middle of the sidewalk when we walked a few blocks down Shattuck. So just be aware of your surroundings.

Dear Ms4All, Thanks for selecting our hotel over the Holiday Season. Our hotel takes great pride in being hyper vigilant on cleanliness and we're thrilled you experienced this. We were able to resolve the Peloton subscription issue as there was a short lapse in subscription coverage. We're really sorry you experienced this. That's not ideal as exercising is incredibly important. We do thank you for your comments as well as your observations and we appreciate you sharing them with us.

Located in a great area of Berkeley with the option to self park in a garage across the street or use their Valet service for $45/day, which I think is a very reasonable price for the city. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has really good food!

This old hotel (built in 1910) needs a lot of work. The air conditioning was broken in many parts of the building during the time I stayed there when we had record-breaking heat in Berkeley. There are two elevators in the center and the farthest rooms on each floor are a very long walk. In my room a light was burnt out and the coffee maker was broken. The bathroom is tiny with very little space to put toiletries, and the shampoo dispenser is hard to operate. The only plus is its central location in Berkeley, close to public transportation, retail, and restaurants.

I stayed at this hotel as part of a conference. I was highly disappointed. I made a reservation in August. At that time there were two room options when I accessed reservations via the conference link. Both rooms were the same price. I selected one. Complete and confirmed my reservation. Two weeks later I received an email that my room rate had been increased by $100 PER NIGHT of my 5 night stay without notice or explanation. When I called to inquire about the change the person I talked to was not helpful and would only say that was the "contracted rate for the conference". I asked to be changed to a room with the original room rate and received my confirmation. When I arrived I was told the room I reserved was not available. I was told they assign rooms upon arrival and all of that room type were already assigned. I was going to be downgraded to a full size bed when I reserved a king. At this point I expressed my displeasure with the front desk about this being the second time my reservation had issues and they somehow found an "upgrade" for me. However, this was not an upgrade as it was a smaller room than the one I reserved, but it did have a king bed. I checked in when the outside temp was 90 degrees and half the hotel did not have AC. While my room technically had AC it was not working well. The hallways and common areas were very hot. The bedside reading lamps in my room did not work nor did the plug ins on the bedside tables. I had planned to use the hotel gym during my stay, but decided against it once I knew it was on one of the floors completely without AC.

The room was clean and the hotel generally well kept. The window in my room had a large crack across the window, which was taped up. Someones old socks were missed by housekeeping. All the shampoo/soap dispensers said "Shampoo" (except the conditioner was labeled separately), so I wasn't sure in the shower which was body wash or shampoo.
Yeah, I'd stay here again, if the price is right. There are a couple other properties in Berkeley I will try before I repeat my visit here. I am not saying it was a bad visit at all. Just an average visit.

Don't stay at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza unless you enjoy walking up and down 5 flights of stairs. Elevators are old and unreliable. Pack your own food, too, because the restaurant staff must be moonlighting as elevator repair people who don't show up when service is needed.

Yes I think that is correct. Once you get off at Downtown Berkeley Station, you walk about half a block south on Shattuck Ave and you will see the hotel right there on the southwest corner. Entrance to the hotel is off Allston Way - you will see the doorman from the corner.
There are more places to choose from in the Berkeley area.
