I was very happy with our hotel. Perfect location right on the beach and on the edge of Hillsborough. Just a 2 to 10 minute walk to restaurants, groceries, variety store, buses etc. I was very happy we chose Hillsborough to stay in.
The Mermaid was clean, friendly and quiet. The rooms don't have private balconies but your door is just steps from a common sitting area upstairs or down. The beach chairs and towels are a plus. The breakfast choices were fantastic and made the room price very reasonable. The room only had a fridge and kettle so the breakfast included was a bonus. Daily maid service was unexpected. The attached Callaloo Restaurant was very nice, though brewed coffee would have been preferable to instant! Two days out of four we had only instant. The room lacked towel bars or hooks of any kind. There is a closet but no dresser or shelving. Not sure why. But that is my only complaint!

We were able to request an ocean front room and it was very nice. It's a two-story hotel with about 20 rooms. The staff were friendly. We liked the location because it's in town (very small area), but it's about 5 minutes bus ride/taxi to Paradise Beach and maybe 10-15 to Tyrell Beach. A bus stop is right in front and they are plentiful and cheap (3.50 EC). The restaurant's food is ok. Be prepared, though, for a long wait whether or not anyone else is dining at the time. But, you know, it's Island Time. BTW, the Butterfly Bar is right next door and you need to stop in and have a Jack Iron rum. Trust me.

We had a great time here. Lovely friendly staff, comfortable rooms and a fantastic location right on the beach: falling asleep to the sound of the sea was wonderful. We were a big family group, all of us in rooms with full or partial ocean views - worth paying the extra. We used the restaurant for breakfast and occasionally lunch. Good food, amazing views: we watched pelicans fishing while eating our scrambled eggs.
It’s not a slick city centre hotel, so sometimes the service was a bit slow, once the water was a little tepid, but you don’t go to Carriacou for a slick city centre experience. We loved the birds visiting the restaurant! And the beach and sea are just beautiful. Hillsborough is an utterly charming place with interesting shops, a good little museum and quite a few good places to eat. We would go again in a heartbeat.

Reception was very sparse, dusty, dark and bland. The bedroom was beautiful no complaints until I saw something like mice droppings on the bed spread. The thoughts instantly came out of my head as the room looked so beautiful and clean. My fiance and I went out for the evening as it was my birthday. Upon our return I saw my fiance looking in the waste paper basket in the room then under our bedroom door which has a two inch gap that leads to a balcony. He said lets go out and sit on the beach which was around 23:00hrs.
The next morning he told me that we have mice in the room he saw them jumping in and out of the waste paper basket and scurring under the gap of the bedroom door. He didn't want to tell me what he saw as he didn't want to spoil my birthday and it was too late in the night to look for another hotel for the night.
Breakfast was a rip off as we had to pay an extra fee of $30 for a non-contintental breakfast. Birds were flying in and out of the restaurant area which was annoying.
One of the receptionists from England who checked us in was laying on a deck chair drinking alcohol on the beach which was purchased for her by friends. Too be fair she may have finished her shift but it didn't look very professional.

We stayed at this hotel, after not such a great stay at the Townhouse in Carriacou. It's in a great location, just off the beach in Hillsborough. Our parents were originally from Carriacou and we've been visiting for 35 years. Unfortunately as my parents have passed away and we're doing some repairs to the house, we had to find alternative accommodation so thought we'd stay at a local 'hotel'.
Upon arrival, there was no one there. We were told to come back later, which by then, had someone to check us in. The rate had included breakfast, which was great, as we hadn't had this feature at our previous accommdation.
Once I'd paid, I was told that there was no breakfast. They didn't have enough people and wasn't worth the person's while just cooking for two people. Fair enough, bit disappointed, but kind of got it.
The room was basic, but with very strong and effective air conditioning. It wasn't very large, without anywhere to put our cases, or clothing as such, apart from a wardrobe. The fridge was tiny, the bin was small and only got changed once as no staff on the Sunday.
I know Carriacou well, so I wasn't expecting Sandals, but still...
The shower looked great, so was expecting a lovely hot shower, but of course got, at best, a cold to tepid temperature. More disappointment.
Worst to come, there was no-one on site at night and it felt really scary as there was zero security. The light outside of our room didn't come on either. The 'ocean' view was the best. We had a broken down motorbike outside of our room and plain walls.
I have no idea how they can call this a hotel. How, what, where?!!! No breakfast, even though we'd paid and clearly were never going to receive a refund? No security, nothing.
I would not recommend staying here unless you literally only want a bed for the night, are on a diet and want a cold shower!
Carriacou itself is absolutely beautiful, the people are wonderful - so find somewhere to stay that appreciates your money and understands what customer service actually means.

We are sorry to hear that this was your experience. Admittedly, at the time of your visit we were not adequately staffed, and this is certainly no fault of yours. Since then, however, we have made a few changes and upgrades, most notably that our restaurant and bar has resumed daily operations for breakfast and lunch, with dinner by reservation.

I have been to the restaurant several times. The service is excellent, the staff polite and helpful, However all this is let down by the lack of availability of menu. On every visit, at least 30% of items on menu are not available. Deserts offer no choice! Please either cut down the choices on menu, or put items on that you actually have!

The Mermaid Tavern Beach Hotel is also home to a local restaurant and bar right on the beach in Hillsborough Carriacou. Wonderful place to kick back with family and/or friends, enjoy the local cuisines and have a cold drink right on the beach. The view is amazing and I could just listen to the waves all day while dining.

Spent two nights at this hotel and I highly recommend it. From reservations to check-in and checkout, everything was to my complete satisfaction.
The location is right on the beach and right in the main city with all amenities close by.
The room was immaculate and spotless, the housekeeper at this hotel gets 20/10 for the attention to detail especially in making the bed.......perfection.
I also enjoyed the location breakfast at the onsite restaurant.
Overall, great stay and this will now be my spot for my monthly visit to the beautiful island of Carriacou.

The island is a lovely albeit slow gem of a place. This is the best place in town, the old town, not the marina at Tyrell. It is recently renovated, the plumbing, electricity and net are good, though the staff are learning things like keys, safes, bookkeeping. Tell them, relax, wait a few minutes, and your worries melt away.

There are very few places to stay on Carriacou, a beautiful island that's kind of off everyone's radar. So I'll give the Mermaid Beach Hotel points for being clean and modern, with larger than usual rooms and, in our case, a lovely ocean view. It's also in the center of Hillsborough, the island's main town, and has an excellent beach right out front. And there's a restaurant that serves a very good breakfast, and lunch/dinner.
However I wouldn't quite give the hotel rave reviews, as it's a bit bare bones and could use just a few more amenities. But the price is good, and it's an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating island. And a few miles' walk in either direction will take you to two of the most spectacular beaches I've ever seen: Paradise, and Petit Carenage.

You either can book a flight with SVG Air from Maurice Bishop Airport, Grenada to Lauriston Airport, Carriacou or you can jump on the Osprey ferry, which leaves from the Carenage, St. George's @ 9 am Monday to Saturdays and arrives in Hillsborough Carriacou around 11:30 am.
