Granted, this is NOT a modern country. There isn't a lot to choose from for lodging facilities. In the states (NZ or Australia), this might garner a 2 or 3-star rating at best, but in Tonga, that's luxurious.
The Paradise used to be the Port of Refuge (in the late 70s). The room numbers in the 130s are spacious and air conditioned, and a little nicer than lower room numbers, the grounds are phenomenol, and the view of the harbor is breathtaking. Don't expect great furnishings, but once again, they're adequate; the beds are comfortable enough. The hot water works very well, the electricity was always on, and best of all, we NEVER saw a bug (think cockroach).
It's a 15 min walk to town, but the taxi fare is only $T3 (about $US1.50) - and there's so much to see, we walked it most of the time anyway.
We really didn't see any other hotel in Vava'u (or Tongatapu, for that matter) that we'd settle for.
There's no beach at the Paradise - but there is a dock. If you want beach, try the Tongan on Pangaimotu. It's a 15 min. drive from town, but a lovely beach. Rooms looked smaller than Paradise, but adequate.
We tried lots of the places to eat, and don't recommend any of them for the US palate. But you gotta eat, so .... best wishes.
For fun, ask the gal at the desk for a tour guide of the island. There's lots to see.
To go off on your own (if the weather is calm), go to the docks and get a yellow "Rent a Boat" from Robert Bryce at CocoNet. He's a Bay Area refugee, who's found paradise in Vava'u. Suggest sunscreen, a laminated map and a GPS if you're going to go exploring on your own. Swallow's Cave is fun... lots of small private beaches and the most beautiful water you've ever seen. The boat goes for about $US70/day (8:30AM - 4:30PM) and would carry your whole family. Comes with an anchor so you can pull up to some shallow water, drop the anchor and go exploring. Just make sure you can pull yourself back in the boat before you get out!

For Tonga, it's great.

On the plus side: The room was huge (though not the bathroom). The food was actually pretty good. The pool seemed very nice (although we didn't use it). The hotel is a 5 or 10 minute walk to town.

The negatives: The staff didn't seem very service-oriented. Service was slow at the front desk, slow in the bar, and downright glacial in the dining room. This, in spite of the fact that during our two times in the dining room (once for dinner and once for breakfast) we were either the ONLY table, or in the case of breakfast, one of two tables (the other comprised of hotel staff). It took over 20 minutes just to get a cup of coffee in the morning, a situation which drove my American husband right over the edge!

Also, we had some insects (small ants, but HUNDREDS of them) in the room. A staff person quickly brought me some spray for this.

I wish that I could give this hotel a five but that would be misleading. You may begin your stay as a customer you will leave as a friend. Yes the buildings are tired and old and things break down. Show me any place in Tonga that is any different, but the staff are diligent and caring and do everything they can to make your stay very pleasant. The room was clean, the air conditioning worked and the view rivals many a million dollar palace. In terms of value for money in a country that is the most expensive I have ever visited the Paradise provides good value for money. Enjoy.

Stayed in The Paradise Hotel for 9 nights from August 10-19th 2009. This was 9 nights too long. The hotel was probably once quite nice but lack of maintenance & repairs combined with an extensive fire in 2008 to the reception, restaurant & bar area have left it in a very poor state (see attached photos).

Our package included breakfast but as there is no kitchen or restaurant this is not possible. All meals require a 10-15 minute walk to the cafes & restaurants in the nearby town.

Rooms are large enough but very tired. No bedside lights, no working ceiling fan and a noisy over-door style air-conditioner that required standing on a chair to turn on or off. The room was clean if you didn't look under the bed. Daily service was performed by friendly staff but on most days they took the towels and did not replace them. A small bar fridge was a useful item although this was also very old & rusted. It's location in one side of the wardrobe made it impossible to open or close the wardrobe doors.

The bathroom was clean but very old & damp. No working hot water tap in either the shower or hand-basin, no plugs, no exhaust fan, no clothes-line, no bin & no little bottles of toiletries. A large bar of bath soap was provided on arrival and quite new looking towels available for the asking from the laundry room; just a shame they weren't left in the room. The water pressure on most days made hair washing a challenge. We were also subjected to intervals where there was no power and no water in the room.

The location of this hotel is good as everything is within walking distance and there is a nice view of the ocean from the front rooms. The garden rooms are subject to road noise & barking dogs and do not have a view.

There is no beach at The Paradise Hotel and the pool was so dirty it was unusable.

I am a travel agent and was on a business trip to Vava'u when our domesic flight back to Tongatapu was cancelled so we had to stay in Vava'u for a further 2 nights! This meant we were put up in Harbour View Rooms at the Paradise at the airlines expense. Was great and exeded my expectations! Large rooms, great restaurant and great facilities. Also has a good location being about a 10 minutes walk into town.

What a fabulous hotel in a fantastic location. We will be back as soon as we can! When you wake up and look out on the water it is like you are in a dream. It is the essence of the South Pacific. They are apparently going to be doing a remodel soon. I cannot wait to see what they come up with.

The image or sound of a hotel called "The Paradise International Hotel" conjures up all sorts of thoughts. The Paradise Hotel in Tonga has a location and setting that are picturesque and convenient with views over the bay that are beautiful. If you have an upstairs room. sitting on your balcony is amazing for sunsets. The rooms themselves are large and spacious with a fridge and air-conditioningand serviced daily. They are kept spotlessly clean with good hot water and great quality towels. The rest of the hotel was tired and the décor left a lot to be desired in the reception area but there is free internet in the foyer area. The highlight however was the staff. As someone has said - you arrive as a guest but you leave as part of the family, the staff are a family and include you as part of it. They go out of their way to make your stay a memorable and pleasant experience. As we were there to go whale watching they even made us breakfast every morning. I think the Paradise International is a clean and friendly place to stay with great views and easy access to town and judging the price of other hotels I think the value for money was good. I would certainly go back there.

I stayed in a room overlooking the bay and the view alone was worth staying here. Simply stunning. The staff were very helpful and genuinely nice and caring. In the room the A/C worked fine and there was plenty of hot water at all times. No plumbing issues.

There's no longer any sign (that I could see) of the burnt restaurant and bar. It seems to have all been cleared away. However, these have not been replaced which means that for meals you have to go either across the street or take the short walk into town. For me that wasn't a problem.

The location near the town (small town but I personally didn't want to be trapped on one of the islands) is greatly convenient.

The rooms are very large (easily sleep 4 if you needed to). The decor is very old and needs an update. But in a poor country with limited tourists and a short tourist season I can forgive it. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable which is what I needed.

I do occasionally like my luxuries but in a place like Vava'u I'd happily choose to stay here again.

Room with Amazing View. Rooms clean comfortable and very spacious and thanks to the great Hosts Ofa & Pooi who are nicest people. No restaurant however the view is to die for and one can get out and about to eat. Highly recommended and would stay there again

We stayed there for 1 night in late August 2008. Overall we didnt think it was worth the money and would not want to go back.

The positivies were:
The airport shuttles were included, Breakfast was included (although it was not very nice) and the view from the Harbour view room was fantastic.

The negatives were:
It was overpriced, the air conditioning was way too loud so couldnt sleep with it on which meant we still couldnt sleep cos it was too hot, the pool (which is what attracted us to book there) was a funny colour and you couldnt see the bottom so we swam at the jetty instead and the phone didnt work.

We werent expecting much but we felt like the quality you get here is the same as cheaper places so why pay the extra?
