I've just had the privilege to stay at the Hilltop for 3 weeks in October and couldn't be more satisfied with the stay. The room we had (Harbor View) was far more than anyone could ever ask for in terms of price and elegance. (T$130 w/ACapprox $65US) You get hot water, AMAZING views, optional laundry service, a conveniently located bar, and great treatment from the staff. I've paid a heck of a lot more for much less in other countries. The place is great as it is and is still adding to the "details". In addition to the friendly staff, they all were good intentioned at trying to help or make the stay as comfortable as possible.
Initially upon reading some of the "cons" in some of the more "known" travel guides, I was leary of walks back to the hotel from town due to the dogs. Needless to say, the dogs were harmless and have never came within a few feet of anyone that I was walking with.
I consider my overall experience as Terrific. Better than terrific.
--M

P.S. I failed to mention that they had internet access and were adding wireless which was to be available to patrons of the Hotel. Not sure on the pricing as it wasn't officially "in service". So many good things to say about this place, but such a limited vocabulary.

The Hilltop has the best view of Vava'u of all hotels. The included breakfast is good. We stayed here for a week and enjoid every minute. The rooms are good value. It's about 5min walk to town and all the restaurants. They can organize tours to the offshore islands and caves.

Arrived at the HILLTOP HOTEL on the 3rd August looking for alternative accommodation being uphappy at my present motel, lucky I was able to get a room after talking to the manager, at first i asked if I could take a look at the room before deciding to stay, the manager kindly offererd me one of the HARBOUR VIEW ROOMS at a discounted rate & asked for TOP 100- per night. My decision to call in to the HILLTOP HOTEL was only because I had called into JONES TRAVEL TOURS office to ask about any local tours in Vava'u & I decided to arrange for a local Taxi guy to take me out for the next day on a full day tour & was quoted TOP 100- [a very resonable fee], later I actually met the same Tour driver named SAIA & I decide to take a short tour around Vava'u for a few hours & he only charged me TOP 60-, during the tour & visiting some great area'a around Vava'u we ended up at MT TALAU NATIONAL PARK, after a stressful steep climb & dripping from the heat we both admired the beautiful views of the harbour & took many great photos, during our conversation the tour guide SAIA asked me where I was staying & I explained to him that I wasn't very happy staying at the TWIN VIEW MOTEL & he suggested the HILLTOP HOTEL & after my short tour had almost ended SAIA kindly offererd to take up to the HILLTOP HOTEL & he waited while i spoke to management & I agreed to stay, SAIA then again kindly offererd to return me to THE TWIN VIEW MOTEL & pack up my gear & inform the owner I had decided not to stay any longer, & then returned to the HILLTOP HOTEL, [ I had also arranged another full day tour around the Island for the following day with SAIA], .......anyway back to the HILLTOP HOTEL & I'm given room 1, with great harbour views, the A/C systen was a relief with the heat, the room was a average size, a comfortable double bed with a mosquito net around the bed [didn't get bitten once]... my only suggestion is about the shower system, it's a strange water system & wasting time sorting out the right TEMP, the shower recess is very slippery especially when you have to continue in walking in & out of the shower to maintain the right WATER TEMP & wasting a lot of water!... The manager & her family who helped support the business were all very friendly & made me feel very welcome, you were allowed to help yourself in the kitchen to make tea & coffee, B/fast wasn't included in the room rate, the morning B/fast was presented well with plenty of fruit toast cereal & a full cooked B/fast if requested [B/fast not expensive], the evenings were very quiet around the hotel & I spend a great deal of time talking to the family talking about my travels etc, I would take a stroll down into NEIAFU town & call into TROPICANA INTERNET CAFE & check my emails with the odd coffee, another place where many tourists ate was at THE SUNSET GRILL run by an american family & made all there customers very welcome, my worst order for a evening meal was at the MARINE CAFE a terrible burger that wasn't even cooked....... my only big regret in VAVA'U was on my first day on arrival I had booked a WHALE WATCHING TOUR with DOLPHIN PACIFIC DIVING & quoted TOP 275- & booked for the Friday 5th August, unfortunately the weather turned & it's hard to believe that on this day it rained very heavy & much cooler in temp....& even many local people & business operators said they hadn't known the weather turn this cool & therefore I just didn't turn up the the WHALE WATCHING TOUR.... with my history of motion sickness I didn't want to spoil my holiday.... I'm not really sure if the company would have cancelled the tour if I had turned up!...... Another place for a good evening meal is at the ITALIAN PIZZA RESTURANT, another interesting place to visit during the day is the local tourist information centre & they also sell local hand made gifts & the local market is worth visiting & getting a discounted price appears to be part of the fun in shopping! When your out at night time & happy to walk back to the HILLTOP HOTEL which will take approx 15-20min's, be warned it's a VERY VERY DARK ROAD & up a steep hill & I had a few problems trying to locate the hotel on my first evening..... I just stared at my hand & hoped! ...... I wish to also express my appreciation to SAIA the tour/taxi guide in making me feel so welcome in VAVA'U & showing me around this beautiful Island & during my day tour I treated SAIA to lunch at the TONGAN BEACH RESORT & very good food....... Sadly due to the turn in the weather during my last 36 hrs in VAVA'U I decided to change my air ticket & rtn to the mainland of TONGATAPU slightly earlier & flying with CHATHAMS PACIFIC..... also due to the heavy rain the management insisted I join her family on my last evening for the evening meal in the hotel, this was a very kind gesture & I will always remember these very kind people, paid my invoice the night before leaving & your able to use your C/Card for payment with a small c/c fee, overall TOP 300- for my 3 nights & I only paid TOP 50.70 for my 3 B/fasts with coffee or tea anytime from the kitchen & the small c/card fee included & I felt this is great value!... On Saturday 6th August SAIA turned up for my transfer to VAVA'U airport & I left the HILLTOP HOTEL at 7:30am for Vava'u airport & charged TOP 30- for my transfer, my flight back the mainland TONGATAPU took approx 45min's........ I would like to re-visit Vava'u again in the future & I'd like to wish everyone who I met in VAVA'U all the very very best & a big thanks for making me so welcome.

We stayed here one night because everything else was full - now I know why. The rooms are pretty shabby and the hotel offers nothing - no sign of breakfast and you couldn't even get a bottle of water. It was really noisy at night first of all from other guests through the paper thin walls and then from the non stop dogs barking and cocks crowing. The only good thing is the view from the harbour view room.

We stayed one night at the Hilltop Hotel in October 06. It was very reasonably priced, the staff were helpful and the rooms were clean. Although the bed was a little firm from memory, the overall impression was of comfort and convenience, and we’d definitely stay there again. It was a short but interesting walk to town (although not one that I’d recommend after dark, because of the uneven terrain). But the taxis were very cheap, if you opted for that over walking. The majority of our time was spent on an island off Vava'u - that was really spectacular, but much more expensive per night. The Hilltop Hotel was perfect for a short day of excursions, prior to catching our flight the next day.

We only stayed here a few nights but enjoyed the stay. The people who work here are incredibly lovely and helpful. The room and views were also very nice. (They also did a great laundry service). It was a little bit of a hassle being slightly out of the town centre. We ended up catching cabs when we were feeling too lazy to walk up the hill. I would recommend staying at Hilltop.

This is the sort of clean you don't see very often in Tonga. Crisp white sheets and bed covers, perfectly clean rooms, great mosquito nets. You could be forgiven for thinking that you are in a much more expensive place.

The views are worth the trip up the hill, a taxi just costs a few dollars. The breakfast room is up high in a beautiful open pagoda with views all around.

Get the rooms with a view if you can and on Sunday and Monday mornings you will be woken by the singing of the angels as the sounds of the church choirs from around town drift up the hill.

This place is a gem I would stay here again for sure.

I stayed in a garden view room which was a good size and very clean. The room view is non existent however. The water doesn't really get hot however despite how much time you leave the heater on. Wifi works only by the reception and is weak. There is a kitchen you can use although it's not the most clean. The view is stunning and the perfect place to get some beers or wine and watch the sunset. The staff are fun but not useful and not always present. I tried to pay my bill before leaving only to be told see someone else. We checked out early in the morning without paying and had to contact booking.com in order to pay. A good budget option if you don't need any advice / help during your stay.

The hilltop is a good basic hotel for staying in vava'u. The people are extremely helpful. The rooms are spotlessly clean. Free wifi. Air con. Hot water. Nice healthy breakfasts are available. All in all very happy with this hotel for the price (92 top)

The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean, well furnished and the view is fantastic (see photo). The internet is good in the common area and I reckon that the balcony is one of the best places in the whole Pacific to sit back, enjoy a coffee and take in the view.

The rooms are well-sized, have Ikea furniture, comfortable beds, air-con and a balcony (harbor-view rooms). There's no fridge, but the fridge in the common kitchen is available for use and the showers are quirky, but generally work well. The hotel kitchen is available for common use (which is useful on Sundays when everything shuts down).

There's a decent walk up the quarry road to the hotel and the eastern track should not be attempted in the dark (speaking from experience) and dogs (and even pigs) can be a nuisance, but that's Tonga (just pick up a stone and they'll run). There's small shops about five minutes walk down the hill where you can get simple supplies and the main part of Neiafu is a further five minutes walk. Alternatively, the hotel is a 2-3 TOP taxi trip from anywhere in the town (useful for lugging groceries). The trip from the airport is 20-25 TOP, although try and pre-arrange a taxi through the hotel as taxis are not always available.

The hotel staff can arrange pretty well anything, from laundry to tourist trips and if you ask they'll prepare breakfast (well-priced). They can make other meals with enough notice.

There's internet, but not much else for more formal meetings. However, the common balcony is a great location for casual meetings and the hotel staff can arrange drinks and snacks on request. Most of all, it's just a great place to sit and work.

This was my fourth stay at Hilltop. I tried several different hotels in Neiafu, but keep coming back here. The staff, the rooms and the view are hard to match. I come for work, but would happily bring my wife or my whole family here.
