This was a great place to base myself for a few days whilst visiting Vava'u. The accommodation is comfortable, the welcome friendly, plus great value! It's not too far with the free boat transfer back to the pier for whale swimming and other trips (that they can book for you), so you've still got plenty of activities to do...that's if having the beach to yourself and free kayaks aren't enough!
It's also pretty cool to visit the local church to hear the singing if you're there on a Sunday...

Great hosts, Lovely experience for our family with two kids for for nights. The food is great, the island is perfect, loved the snorkeling. The newer built fale has perfect mossie protection and excellent ventilation so made our stay paradise at night as well as day. Had the first three nights in the corner room in the house which had one broken screen so we could only open one window and no airflow anyway. Couldn't use mosquito net because impossibly hot with all four of us in the room and thus we all got very munched and bothered by mosquitos that were probably coming through the big hole in ceiling. So get the fale if you can and if not ask about the state of the room re holes. All that aside was a great place for the family, just keep an eye out for broken glass on the beach. I would do a bit of a clean each day so my toddler didn't get into mischief.

I went to Ofu in September this year and stayed for 8 days, there were 5 of us altogether and we were the only people on the Island.

The resort is owned by Tavita (David) who lives next to the old port in neiafu, but it is run by his sister in law Ana. It is really Ana's home - it is very basic and they just rent a few of the spare bedrooms out. Ofu Island is small (it takes around 90 minutes to walk around) and there is only one village on it of around 100 people. This is the only backpackers on the Island. The cost is very low - around 50 Pa'anga a night, and 20 for dinner (lovely home cooked tongan food). The Island is absolutely incredible - for those trying to go to Fiji and pay the ridiculous prices in the yasawa and mamanuca Islands - don't, this place is so much nicer and costs nothing in comparison!

The resort is situated directly on the beach, and is sheltered from the wind. I struggle to understand why mafana Island has got so many more good reviews than this place when the beach faces directly into the wind - very cold! Ofu is much nicer, lying in the hammocks/sitting on the beach/ picking your own coconuts, was all unbelievabke! The beach is absolutely incredible - great swimming and amazing snorkeling on the reef. There are also free kayaks to use - we kayaked to a nearby uninhabited Island, started a small fire on the beach and relaxed for the rest of the day. For comparison - In Neiafu adventure backpackers charges 50 Pa'anga just for a kayak for a day!

We decided to ask david if we could cook a pig on the beach - and he arranged all of this for us for the total price of £30 (unbelievable), he brought some beers and we spent the afternoon cooking the pig before sharing it with the family. After that we kayaked to the nearby Mandala resort on Fetoko island run by a really lovely american couple - they have a great bar over there, and so far they have only built one room (in a tree house). It's really luxurious and the room is only $250 a night - anywhere else in the world it would be at least $2000! The beers aren't too expensive and they even invited us to join them for a private birthday party. It was awesome as Ben (the owner) is also a DJ - great evening, very strange kayaking home under the influence at 3AM!

Back to Ofu - after sharing the pig with David he offered to take us snorkeling - the next day he took us to two of the best sites I've ever been and to a disappearing sandy island, all for the cost of the fuel (60 Pa'Anga) - anyone else would have charged at least 500! He also invited us fishing (we went - but didn't catch anything), and to his house for lunch on the Tongan mother's day. He genuinely is one of the nicest people I have ever met - it's worth staying here just to get to know him. On Ofu I also highly recommend getting to know the local peace core volunteer Geoff - he took us to the Kava ceremony in the village (a nightly occurrence) which was brilliant as well. Try and go to church on Sunday, the entire Tongan culture is based around it and the singing was phenomenal.

It's difficult to really put into words how incredible our experience was here, we were really welcomed into their family and it was easily the best time I had in my 85 days in the south pacific. Thank you Tavita for such a brilliant few weeks and I hope that one day I will make it back to Ofu!

this isnt for everyone and after 24 hours i wondered what i was doing there, (very hot and humid, i came to realise pretty quickly that no mains power =no fans = many more mosquitoes and apparently i taste good.)but after 4 days was so glad that i went! this is a great place for cheap snorkeling / kayaking, but beyond that you get to stay with truly wonderful tongan family. a huge thankyou to anna, maria and tala. guess you could go over there and do the whole "i'm the importsnt rich white person waiton me" thing which i'm sure they would do, but for me a much richer experience to join helping out with dishes, joining in church service etc. nver bothered to lock anything while on the island and felt totally safe, only potential threat that i could sense would have been from other tourists.

here you are given a room in someone's house on a beautiful island with a village of about 150 people. incredibly cheap at t$35 per person per night. dinner available (and they perfer to cook for you even though they say that you can take your own food over) for t$15 per night. food local tongan food as opposed to tongan interpretation of western likes. quantity sufficient that i only needed to eat once per day. accomodation is "basic" but adequate.

free use of sea kayaks and an easy paddle to the outer reef where diving / snorkeling is amazing.

was surprised that they didnt offer free or decent hire snorkeling kit until i saw their vast collection of destroyed stuff and marveled at how destructive toudrists could be. this wasnt a problem for me initially as i had my own gear from nz anyway, though mid holiday i made the mistake of loaning my mask / snorkel to another tourist who didnt have the sense to tie it onto the back of the kayakand made an ocean donation. i dont say this as a complaint - i probably should have told him to tie it on but rather as a word of warning as being on a beautiful island with no dive mask isnt great.

i also left my favorite shirt behind by mistake on top of mosquito net and only realised once back on mainland, thinking it lost i rang the owner on the mainland and he said they would look for it the next day when back out on the island. i was amazed whe. they turned up with it at port wine guesthouse the next day feee of charge - a huge thanks to tevita and for me a bit of a summary of what these people are like!

also personally i like to support locally owned busineses and there arent many in this part of tonga but this is one.

We’ve stayed at Ofu only couple of days but it was very nice! The village is quiet and friendly and the room was tidy and comfy. The hosts vere very friendly and helpful (especially the grandma). However you should be prepared for Tongan standards. The kitchen is not clean and the kayaks are very used...

if you are looking for the most authentic, beautiful, rewarding, heart-warming Tongan experience you will ever come across, then look no further! Ofu Island and its simply gorgeous inhabitants will embrace you with open arms....and take you in as part of their extended Pilangi family. Dear Anna will never stop cooking for you - from bread fruit , collected seaweeds to the most delicious fish....not to mention umu on a Sunday. And beautiful Fi'Ana will help you with every other aspect of your stay such as transfers, activities and lots of just wonderful chats about life, food, traditional dance... I loved this place so much I have already booked it out for my birthday next year...as I cannot think of a better place or a more scrumptious group of people I would like to be around. Big Kangaroo Island Love to you my friends! What unforgettable moments we have shared! Long live the little Crown Prince and Princess of Tonga!! (who visited us on Ofu during my stay- Amazing!!!) Xxx

I spent two fantastic nights on Ofu. The island is stunning, proper picture postcard tropical island and beautifully clean. White sand beach on your doorstep, free kayaks to use, a very comfy hammock and clean and tidy rooms. The local population is very small (no vehicles, only a handful of houses) and all very friendly. Anna and her mum were really nice and helpful as hosts. There is a wee kitchen where you can cook your meals and they can make some tasty island food if you ask. I would definitely go back here.

I spent 8 nights on the delightful island of Ofu, in my own little cabin - right next to the beach. This place is a great experience if you want to live with the locals and become part of a community. Tevita (english name - David), picked me up from the airport in a car - and drove me to his boat, whereby it was a peaceful 20 min ride to the island of Ofu.

Anna greeted me warmly and made sure i had everything I needed. There is a lovely little school (feel free to bring gifts like pens/pencils/books) and a tiny little shop and a few churches.

I really needed to relax, and this was the perfect place for it. They have canoes and snorkelling gear which is free. Anna is also available to cook meals if you like. Her breakfast pancakes are delicious!

If you want a lift to any of the neighbouring islands, Tevita can organise this for you. I stayed specifically in Tonga for the whale watching season - which was an amazing experience.

Staying at Ofu backpackers gives you a local experience - and this is what I wanted in my Tongan adventure.

I stayed at Anna's for a week with 7 other friends. I will never forget my time spent on Ofu. It was truly special. The little beach cabins were bright, and cute with lace curtains and floral bed spreads. I could see the beach from my bed and also enjoyed reading my book on the porch whilst gazing at the incredible garden of Anna's. I will definitely be back. Thank you Anna xx

Tevita and the lovely ladies at Ofu accommodated me and 7 friends for 6 nights on their lovely island home. This was the second time I have been to Ofu, and just absolutely loved every moment of it. It really is the perfect place to stay in Vavau if you are on a budget and dont mind roughing it a little bit (no refrigeration or hot water, but ice boxes and all the other necessities). In return, you get a really nice and genuine Tongan experience. Fiana and her friends and family on Ofu put on an amazing Tongan feast for us which the highlight was dancing the night away with the kids on the island. There is a kitchen that you can cook for yourself, or you can simply paddle a kayak across to the lovely Fetoko island (Mandala resort) where you can get more upmarket dining experience and there's a bar there too. In this way, Ofu is situated in a perfect location and only 15 by boat to Neiafu. You should definitely go here before it becomes over run with resorts in the future. After 6 nights there I really did not want to leave. Ana really is a special person and made everything about our stay just awesome.
