Me and my sister stayed 3 nights on Mafana Island on our trip around the world and we rarely had such a caring and lovely host as Behan! He picked us up in Town and brought us to the island. We stayed in one of the tents and it was really comfi and clean. Every night Behan lit a fire for us and brought us some beers and stayed for a while to chat to us.

As we were the only guests we had the beach all to our selves. Everything was perfect. The kitchen is a bit simple, but it has everything you need and it only adds to the Robinson feeling you get on this enchanted little place. I can really recommend this place as Behan will do everything to make you as comfortable as possible. Even his little cat Peanut will say hello from time to time and check if everything is ok.

If life ever bring me back to Tonga I will have another stay on Mafana Island, for sure!

Absolutely gorgeous fales on a private island. Simple but sweet and the perfect getaway. Unlike other places no roosters to keep you up all night. Be prepared for no electricity or drinking water.

We had some problems with our flights with realtonga and Beth the owner was so great helping us, even allowing us to stay at her private house on the mainland to make sure we made the replacement ferry. We couldn't have managed without her and could have been stuck on Vava'u for another two weeks.

Highly recommend staying here for a different island experience. Perfect for young couples.

Lovely Island living that is just above roughing at a good price. Jerry the manager does a wonderful job. They have a kitchen to do your own cooking or will make dinner for you if you ask. The fales are clean, open with a great view. The beach is decent and you can hike, kayak or snorkel right outside your fales. Flying fox and birds around the island. You hear the sound of the ocean at night.

My girlfriend and I had four nights on Mafana. The place is incredible! Very nice and private beach. Authentic tropical island camping staying in the bamboo fale. Excellent snorkeling, swimming, cooking facilities, toilet facilities, sunshine, explorations of the islands. Good company too, met another two couples during our stay, had good camp fire drinking yarns. Behan and the his pet cat are excellent hosts too! Highly recommended!

When we stayed at Manafa, there was nobody else with us but the two caretakers who were on the other side of the island. So really we had our own private island / beach, which is the attraction of the place. But not all day long: every morning at 8am, Aselili, a resident of the neighbouring island, comes to clean and tidy up until 11am-midday. However he was really not invasive - it was as if he weren't there. Our tree fale was cute but basic with mosquito net over bed. Don't expect luxury. And unfortunately the weather wasn't very good when we were there (crazy wind, rain). You need to be aware that the fale doesn't protect you from the wind. So bring a sleeping bag or ask for blankets, we got quite cold on the first night. The snorkelling in front of our fale is not the best but it's nice enough to keep you busy for a day - as you face the beach, the best area is to the left. We didn't try the other side of the island but it could be quite nice too. You can also walk to the neighbouring island via a sandbar, which can be very pretty to do - unfortunately we did it in pouring rain. Kayaks would be fun to use, but strong winds prevented us to do so. There's everything you need to cook, also ice to keep food cold for 2-3 days. Showers are cold, and a bit hard to work out. The views from the fale and from the beach are beautiful, the location is idillic (but just so you know, don't expect to see whales, it's not the part of Vava'u where they usually travel). And despite the weather, we still had a lot of fun. So if you want a little slice of paradise just for yourself, don't mind roughing it a bit, and don't want to pay the price tag of a resort, that's the place for you.

We spent 9 nights on Mafana and wouldn't change a thing. Its a fantastic contrast to the resorts and really adds to the adventure. The Tree Fales are fantastic, the view is stunning and Veni and Nati were great hosts (in Behans absence). They went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. Veni is full of great stories and taught us a lot about Tongan food and lifestyle. Veni was very perceptive and did everything he could to accommodate us. I cannot recommend this place enough if you're looking for something more than the classic resort holiday. Our time in Tonga was truly unforgettable and staying on Mafana was a definite highlight.

We loved Mafana. It is very small and my partner and I were the only people there. Behan was so great and showed us around and got everything ready for us and let us know everything to bring. We had the whole beautiful beach to ourselves and we drank lots of rum and cooked lots of food in the open air kitchen. Even though there was a tropical storm and we had to leave early we had a great time. It was by far our best experience in Tonga.

This was the perfect way to relax as soon as arriving in Tonga. Absolute silence apart from lapping water. My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights in the treehouse fale which was perfect. This is the only accommodation on the island which only allows a maximum of 8 at one time. As it is a backpackers you need to take all of your own food so you must be organised. The market in Neiafu has plenty of fresh fruit and veg and the shops sell fresh bread, tinned food etc.
Behan the owner was helpful. One day he took us out to the most beautiful island/beach for snorkelling (the clearest waters I saw) and walking to an amazing view point. He has a kitchen area set up with gas cookers, pots, plates, cutlery etc which was adequate but we took our own bowls and cutlery to avoid sharing with others. Something to consider would be taking food that has limited packaging as rubbish disposal in Tonga is a challenge.

One of the most memorable places on my round-the-world tour. I was travelling with two friends and we had the whole Island for ourselves.

I did a last minute booking, but was still provided a very comprehensive info package about the island on email. Upon arriving to Neifau the staff (Beth) was very helpful in arranging everything we needed for the island!

Accommodation is basic, but it is rather cheap too. However the surroundings are just amazing...fales are right at the beach which is then again surrounded by jungle. There is no luxuries in the Island, but everything works and is well maintained.

Behan is amazing guy and made us feel very welcomed and safe at the island. He showed us how to open coconuts and find bananas at the forest and provided us with snorkeling gear, basic fishing gear and kayaks for free.

You can relax, swim, snorkel, fish or trek while enjoying the peace of your own island.

This is not for everyone, but if you are looking for that castaway experience look no further!
