Set in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, which is rated as being one of the finest game viewing areas in Africa, Camp Xakanaxa has one of the best locations in Botswana. Accommodation is in twelve tastefully furnished tents with twin or double beds and en-suite facilities with shower, hand basin and w.c. The tents are situated on the edge of the lagoon and from their private viewing deck, with comfortable loungers, one looks onto the reed fringes at the waters edge. The camp, with its eclectic mix of furnishings from all over Africa, has a dining room, lounge/bar area, fire deck and plunge pool all slightly raised on wooden platforms with spectacular views over the lagoon. The reception area boasts a curio shop. At night the camp looks stunning as it is lit by dozens of paraffin lamps and candles. The game drives in this sector of Moremi take one down winding tracks, through Mopane forests and across lush grasslands. The waterways are either forded by vehicles or crossed on rustic log bridges. The camp faces out over the Xakanaxa Lagoon on the Khwai River, where combined boat and mokoro (dug-out canoe) trips explore the sinuous channels and floodplains of the Delta, one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders. Birding in the area is excellent, especially in the spring and summer months when the migrants are breeding. To the north are the world famous heronries, which attract large numbers of breeding storks and herons.

We stayed four nights. The cabin was small but comfortable. Housekeeping service included a filled ice bucket and water in two glass bottles per person. Having laundry included was a plus since we packed light as instructed. The food was excellent. Oscar the hippo (see picture) came into camp most nights. The staff was phenomenal. Kedi was a fantastic guide. Everyone who was involved in assisting with food and beverages took pride in telling us about them or serving them. We loved the nights we were treated to native songs and dances. We enjoyed our two boat cruises. The only thing we didn’t love was some of the roads.

Our trip to Botswana was marvelous. Each of the three camps we visited were amazing, but Camp Xakanaxa will hold a place in our hearts forever. The manager Mox was attentive and the entire staff was welcoming and helpful. The location right on the Delta was marvelous. Our guide Monti was highly knowledgeable and was able to show us an amazing range of wildlife. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary and as a surprise, Mox and team prepared an intimate dinner for us complete with lovely lights leading to our dinner location which was separate from the rest of the guests. We will always remember our special trip to this lovely location. Our room was also fabulous ...

Amazing sunsets, Beautifully appointed tent cabins, wonderful staff, quality wines, gourmet meals, nightly firepit blazing and the best guide ever. THABO! He brought Africa to life with his knowledge, genuine love of sharing his country, his smile and stories of his life in Africa. The entire staff made sure we were "home" during our stay.. nightly performance to announce our menu for the evening and warm greetings upon our return from the safari drives.. warm, wet cloths to wipe off the dust and brunch to satisfy the appetite. Thanks to Go2Africa and our friend Sue for giving us the memories!

We enjoyed a three night stay at Camp Xakanaxa and recommend it highly.

It is an open camp located right on a channel of the Delta frequented by crocs, hippos and amazing birdlife. Oscar the 'resident' hippo was a regular guest !

The managers and staff are so friendly, engaging and yet professional at the same time. The food was superb and it was a bonus to share meals with guides and management and enjoy the singing that accompanied the evening meal.

Our guide was a very knowledgable young man named TS. He endeavoured to find the wildlife sightings we had on our wishlist and in particular we were delighted to watch and photograph a pack of wild dogs finishing off a kill.

Thank you Manila and staff for a wonderful safari experience.

Xakanaxa is hands down one of the best lodges I have stayed at in Botswana. The staff there along with manager and everyone was wonderful and amazing. I traveled there during COVID 2021 and it was a wonderful experience. I felt special every day as the staff really went out of their way to take care of me. During tea, since I was traveling by myself, they would join me. They prepared such delicious meals. During one of the high tea experiences, I mentioned to the manager that I liked the cake that they served and she saved me and after dinner gave it to me as dessert. The staff paid attention to everthing and it made my stay superb. The guide TS was amazing. He was a great driver and knew so much about the animals, their behavior and where to find them. Moremi is a haven when it comes to birds, animals overall. We had got a radio in on one of the game drives about leopard sighting that was also mobile. He drove us there in record time and we were able to see the animal. Thank you staff and team at camp Xakanaxa.

This place is truly special. We instantly felt at home with a warm welcome from all the staff. This atmosphere continued throughout our stay. We felt like part of the family.

The grounds are beautiful with a variety of wildlife in camp (resident Hippo, Warthogs, Monkeys and plenty of birds). The suites are spacious, clean, comfortable and feel luxurious.

My wife is gluten free and the chef went out of their way to ensure food was suitable. From the start freshly baked gluten free bread was presented, there were always separate gluten free versions of the meal held back specifically, and she never had to ask as they were always aware of her dietary requirement and were prepared. We can’t praise this approach highly enough. Outside of this, the food and service were both exceptional.

Our guide, Monty, really made this trip special. We had such fun exploring the area on our game drives and he took time to teach us about the area, the animals and how he was tracking the animals we wanted to see (he asked us when he met us what or favourites were and ensured we saw all that we could). We were extremely lucky with our sightings, Leopard, Elephant, Giraffe, Hippo, Wild Dogs , but the Lions were eluding us. He never gave up and we spent our last day tracking, and with Monty’s expertise, managed to locate them and witness as a pair of Lioness stalked their prey. Monty really went out of his way to make our stay memorable.

We would go back to Camp Xakanaka without any hesitation.

This was our first safari trip and we were very impressed by the peaceful location and our glamping tent with en-suite.
There were 2 trips each day and we were in a group of 6 with the same guide Monty. Although we arrived after the afternoon trip had started, our pick up from the plane made a huge effort to locate Monty so we could join this safari. We saw many animals on this first short safari. The next day we did a morning land safari and a wonderful water safari in the afternoon when we were blown away by the sight of elephants shoulder deep in the water eating reeds. However it was on our third day that the highlight of our trip occurred. At this time our 4 companions had left just leaving the two of us with Monty. With breakneck speed we crossed the park because 2 cheetahs had been sighted. We were extremely lucky to witness the successful stalking of their prey. This took about an hour of waiting and watching patiently as this was a rare occurrence and Monty, as well as us was very excited.
Generally our stay was pretty perfect. The reason I have given a 4 and not a 5 is that the food was not up to the standard you would expect for the money paid. Dinner the first night was excellent but on the second and third night there seemed to be a new chef on and the meat and chicken served was tough and of poor quality. A real pity.

My wife and I stayed at Camp X for 3 nights in September of 2021. We stayed at several Desert & Delta camps and this was our clear favorite.

Our room/tent was clean, well maintained, and well equipped. It was the perfect mix of modern comfort and safari rustic. The grounds and common areas were also immaculately cared for and beautiful. All of the staff were friendly, welcoming, and warm. Our server while we were there was Mpoh (that spelling might be wrong, my apologies) and she was an absolute delight. In addition to being friendly and outgoing, she kept a kindly watchful eye on us, and even inquired about if I was feeling okay on a day when I didn't eat very much (we were about to leave on a tiny plane and I was planning ahead for airsickness).

The staff planned several surprise meals and stops during our game drives, including a lunch in the game reserve and sundowners next to a pond, where we sat on blankets and watched elephants coming by for a drink. Someone was always there to greet us when we were coming and going and we really felt like we were not just guests, but part of a community.

Our guide, Harry, was one of the absolute highlights of our entire trip to Southern Africa. He was not only an incredibly knowledgeable guide, he was also warm, funny, and sincere. He answered all of our many, many questions with patience and we had some really great conversations with him about conservation, our respective homes, and much more. It felt a little bit like saying goodbye to a new friend when Harry took us to the airstrip to meet our departure plane and I can't say enough about how much of a positive impact he had on our experience.

The food at the Camp was GREAT and I don't know how the chef did it in a camp kitchen. I wish I had some of the recipes to try to recreate at home and the variety of choices was excellent too.

I would recommend Camp X to anyone going on safari in Botswana and we are already talking about returning someday.

Well what a super stay at Camp Xanaxa .
The ‘tents’ are luxurious with fabulous bathrooms including 2 sinks.
All the staff at the camp were so friendly it was absolutely delightful. A special shout out to Yompy who took such good care of us, nothing was too much trouble.
The food was 10/10, must mention the lamb and apricot skewers, so good I’m still talking about them.
There’s so much wildlife at the camp we didn’t need to leave our verandah in the afternoons. We saw Hippo, monkeys, buffalo, banded mongoose, a water monitor, and countless beautiful birds without stepping outside of the camp.
Our guide Monty was such a super chap, so knowledgeable and fantastic at tracking.
I’d highly recommend choosing Camp Xakanaxa as part of your safari holiday.

Xakanaxa is located on a lovely bend in the river and you can sit on the deck and relax while watching out for animals. We took the boat up the channels and the bird life is incredible. The game drives were good, although we missed that much sought after leopard, but really the green spaces and lakes are a treat for the eye. Do not miss paradise island, apparently there is a leopard that lives there!!
Fantastic tented (luxury) rooms that give you an authentic bush experience, all the sounds and senses come through.
I thought the food a bit average, lacking in variety and the staff although friendly, lacked a bit of professionalism at times.
But would still recommend visiting this camp for its fantastic scenery and the delta experience.

Hi Dayani, Camp Xakanaxa is accessible by road from Maun, 4x 4 vehicles only. The drive will take you +/- 4 hours depending on the time of the year.
Answer from Geoff H
Reading, United Kingdom
It's not that cold in the lodges per se and there will be a hot water bottle in your bed and plenty of blankets for the night. There is a camp fire at breakfast and after dinner. However on the morning game drives before the sun is up it is very chilly; you will be provided with a hot water bottle and a rug which helps. You need layers as once the sun is out it gets hot and you will be too hot. Conversely on the afternoon drive it starts hot and gets cold once the sun sets so you need to take extra layers with you otherwise you'll freeze. Not aware of any other places that will have separate heating
