We had a magical Day 2 on the Otago Rail Trail enjoying spectacular scenery made famous by landscape artist Sir Grahame Charles Sydney, who just happens to live just across the valley. In fact, Jane Campion’s Academy nominated “Power of the Dog” was filmed on a nearby farm we looked out the window.
Graeme met us as we dismounted and instantly made us very welcome with genuine warm hospitality, pride in a spectacular property, a working station with 20,000 sheep! Time passed too quickly, and we were off to dinner at the nearby pub for a local experience. We enjoyed a lovely conversation with Donna and hearing of their travel experiences.
The ensuite rooms have great amenities, luxurious beds and the welcoming communal lounge tastefully decorated. The fluffy bathrobes were comfy after a hot bath. We have stayed in 4 luxury lodges on this trip but this was the only one with a bathtub. We feasted on a late cooked breakfast, substantial continental offerings followed by an fluffy omelet before setting off to see the goldmine on the hill where the Luminaries mini-series of New Zealand's 1860's gold rush period was filmed. Stable hands would get the horse ready but Graeme moved our bikes out of the shed to the front door as we packed, and Donna joined him to send us off for another day of adventure. We have been lax with recommendations but made the effort with this review to highly recommend an outstanding stay here for anyone visiting Central Otago by foot, bike or car!

Donna and Graeme met us as we dismounted after a very hot ride on the Otago Rail Trail and instantly made us very welcome, brewing up tea and introducing us to their beautiful property. The rooms have great amenities, supremely comfy beds and the communal lounge is an oasis of calm, lined with books, art and lovely furniture. The breakfast was more than ample to refuel for a days riding and Graemes cooked breakfast was tasty and fresh. Loved it.

Cycled in to Oturehua from Clyde, and just a little way north and on the right hand side of the trail sits the oasis of Marchburn Country Lodge. Our reservation being made by Cycle Surgery. We were welcomd on arrival by our hosts Graeme and Donna with a nice ice cold drink and shown to our guest room and the guest lounge, both were very roomy, and having nice rural outlook over the Mt Ida ranges etc. The lounge was ours and it was well stocked with a wide range of books and some nice artworks. There was a covered veranda available with very comfortable outdoor seating with comfy cushions. Our bed was very comfortable and the room was well able to handle our opened pull-a-longs without obstructing us at all. Certainly a very relaxing outlook and made for a well earned rest. Laundry was available and made use of at no extra charge, a nice touch. The breakfast was really nice and set us both up for a nice easy ride for that day We were not booked in for dinner but it was only a 300meters walk back towards the small town and the lovely Oturehua Pub.

We had the place to ourselves so had free reign of the communal lounge. We stayed in the Mt Ida room which had picture windows with different views from each window. We had the best sleep of our trip which we put down to the bed, and maybe the fact that were were exhausted from our ride up Tiger Hill the day prior. The room has a bath!!!
Donna and Graeme were wonderful hosts who know the area well. They pointed out a walk up to an old gold mine, about 10 minutes from the house, that was well worth the visit.
We were picked up by the Oterehua Pub courtesy van and had a fantastic meal there. The publican made us feel like locals which was nice!
Breakfast was continental and an omelette which fueled us for our ride!
Highly recommend staying here!

We arrived at Marchburn late afternoon after a big day on the trail to find out from guests sitting outside that there was no electricity or hot water. We didn't see the hosts for about half an hour so didn't really know what was going on. Didn't find this at all welcoming, and definitely expected more for what we were being charged for the night. The house and rooms are certainly luxurious but we found the stay underwhelming and expensive.

You'd be mistaken if you thought there wasn't much at Oterahua! Just out of town on the rail trail is a slice of heaven! Graeme and Donna are hospitable hosts. Their purpose built luxurious lodge offers stunning views of the surrounding ranges. Just up the road are the relics of a gold mining site that's worth checking out. We enjoyed relaxing with a book under the shade cloth watching the changinging shadows of the ranges before us. In the morning we were refueled with a superb breakfast ready for another day on the rail trail!

Stayed one night as part of Central Otago Rail Trail trip. Without doubt one of best stays we have ever had anywhere. Gracious hosts, large common room and king bed bedroom. Picture windows with gorgeous views. An absolute must place to stay.

Four of us stayed here while doing the Otago Rail Trail.Just the best place. Owners are great and very hospitable. Very luxurious and only 50 metres off the trail. Made us an omelet for breakfast which we did not expect as there was a big breakfast already supplied. Will be back
