Pod volunteering Kruger conservation Where to begin? The overall experience was excellent. I was with a total number of 17 volunteers during my stay, whilst most of them were considerably younger than me, I could not complain about there acceptance and willingness to communicate with me. I am currently 61 years of age. The accommodation was basic for me, however was clean and comfortable. The facilities at the camp were generally a little dated but more than adequate and the availability of food and the cooking (our own) was excellent. The rangers (we had two sets of 2 rangers during my stay) were absolutely fantastic and could not have been more enthusiastic, helpful, accommodating and informative. The work I did there (although I would not call it work myself) I found easy and very rewarding. A typical day consisted of an early morning drive to monitor animals, check camera traps or spot and count birds. After which we returned to the camp for breakfast. Around 11:00am most days, we had a lecture on various topics including safety in the bush, bush crafts, animal tracking, animal behavior, bird identification and calls etc. This was followed by free time (in which to get lunch, if you wished) and then back out at around 3:00pm for another drive or a little maintenance work (but at your own pace and nothing too strenuous). After returning from the afternoon drive, it was shower time an there were small chores to complete in your groups ie. Preparing and cooking the evening meal for everyone. Washing the pots and pans after dinner. Cleaning the shower blocks. Inputting data from that days activities, all simple tasks really. Then you had free time to sit around the camp and soak up the atmosphere and maybe spot some more wild animals before bed. Once a week we had a day off and could do one of a few (paid for) activities, to suit yourself. I and 10 other volunteers did take a full day trip into the Kruger national park and a trip to town (don't forget some money if you want to do these or shop in Hoedspruit, whilst you are there). I saw lots of animals in their wild environments and thoroughly enjoyed my trip. Thank you to all the rangers and to Pod volunteer. Would I return again? Hopefully!
