KwaMbili Game Lodge provides an authentic safari experience at an affordable price. KwaMbili is siutated in the Thornybush Game Reserve near Hoedspruit, within the Greater Kruger area. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as an abundance of other game and bird species. This means good sightings, either while out on game drive or on foot during bush walks. KwaMbili means "Place of Two" in the local Shangaan language. Our knowledgeable rangers will introduce you to the tracks, movements, sights and sounds which give you a window into the secrets of the African bush. Back at the lodge, view wildlife from the safety and comfort of our well-positioned hide. If all this calls for time to just let the experience sink in ... take a dip in the swimming pool, just relax in an armchair or enjoy a cool drink at the bar.

We loved everything about our stay and KwaMbili is a very special place. All of the staff were fantastic, our ranger, Brandon has amazing enthusiasm and it is clear that he loves what he does. Eddy and Leonae are also brilliant. Leonae will make a great ranger.
The food is out of this world, better than we could ever have imagined. Sundowner drinks are a fab touch. We loved eating in different areas of the lodge every evening, the braai and dinner in the hide were particularly special. The blueberry muffins and steaks are the best we’ve ever had. The serving staff are also very lovely people.
The experience of staying in the tent added so much fun to the trip and the outside shower was heaven. All of the ornaments, furniture and decor are so well thought through and create a wonderful atmosphere. We loved relaxing in the lounge too!
The attention to detail really did add to our stay. Being welcomed back from each safari with warm towels, making sure we could take great photos on each game drive, the water bottles, the lights being turned on for us in the tent at night and the torch to look over the waterhole from the hide after dusk.
Everything was so well thought through and we loved every minute.
An unforgettable experience. I’d recommend KwaMbili to anyone in a heartbeat!

We loved this place. Yes it was our first safari but we did go to two other places after this and still think this was the best. Our hut was very comfortable and the food was great. We really appreciated that the staff on the game drives used ear pieces, which meant we didn't have to listen to loud radios - which we found very off putting at other places we've been to. We saw loads of wildlife and found it very easy to book direct. We spent 3 nights here in total and could easily have spent longer. I highly recommend booking here and combining it with a panorama route self drive and Kruger self drive. We actually did the trip in September 2017 but I keep forgetting to leave reviews, and in this case the review is definitely deserved.

Me and my Swiss friend went to Kwambili game reserve for 3 days. My friend had certain religious constraints with eating certain foods and driving on shabbas due to him keeping the sabbath.
The entire Kwambili staff were exceptionally outgoing to accommodate his specific needs. They took us on extensive game walks on the morning and evening of the sabbath as well as an evening drive when it was night and my friend could drive again.

Besides being very accommodating , the lodge itself was immaculate and clean , without losing any of the bush feeling, we stayed in the tents and nothing can be faulted . It was superb.

The kitchen staff were great , every meal was very tasty !

The game rangers and guides can not be praised enough ! The experience and knowledge that these men hold between themselves is seriously impressive and if you allow yourself to ask a million questions they will gladly answer everyone!

The owner is a hands on owner and can be found around the lodge ! You can sense how much pride and care he takes in his lodge and this rubs off within his staff.

I’ve done many Kruger trips and private lodges but this was seriously a stand out experience.

We had a truly memorable, once in a lifetime experience at Kwa Mbili. As first time safari goers, our priority was to see as much and as diverse a range of game as possible. We saw the Big 5 many times over and so much more! Our ranger Squirrel and tracker Reul went above and beyond, sharing their vast knowledge and creating a fun atmosphere.

Beyond the fantastic game viewing, we were overwhelmed by the warm hospitality of this intimate lodge - only 10 guests maximum allows a truly tailor made experience! Our tent was comfortable and clean, while giving us the experience of waking up to the view of the Bush and the sounds of whatever animals were wandering outside. The common areas are beautifully designed (safari chic!), with a pool and cozy hide that overlook a watering hole - we even got to see a herd of elephants drinking there for almost an hour! The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and we were so grateful to the kitchen staff for accommodating our specific dietary requirements.

Thank you to Ross, Keesha, Neil, Squirrel, Ruel and the whole Kwa Mbili staff for a truly fantastic experience! We hope to be back!

3 of us had magical 4 nights 5 days at Kwan Mbili. We absolutely thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are so much looking forward to booking again soon. Kwa Mbili is without doubt by far the best value for money lodge in the entire Thornybush / Timbavati area. The tented accommodation was airconditioned and comfortable overlooking natural bush with a constant stream of animals visible close by. The food was also superb and we felt part of the family as it’s such a small number of visitors at any one time. All the staff were excellent and super friendly. Our ranger guide and tracker were both equal to any at the best more expensive lodges we’ve frequented previously. We all highly recommend Kwa Mbili for the best wildlife experience, we saw leopard most days, lions, python, honey badgers and even an African civet.

Very elicited to return to KwaMbili after my last visit . Thornybush reserve had been good to me for Big 5 plus Wilddog experiences . This time round we came across the biggest mammal , elephant of about 50 yrs old and the smallest bird , Common Button Quail chick . To spiders , frog nests at the dam . Rare birds not often seen , Senegal Lapwing . Weather didn't quite fit the plan but never the less the game viewing was great. Our guide and tracker tried their best to find leopard , tracks followed , really went out of their way to find one. Sadly it was not to be , although there is plenty of leopard sightings during our stay, we could not transverse in Thornybush property where they were.
The camp is small and Out of Africa feel to it. It inter mate camp , nothing flashy and glitz. The tents are spaced out with privacy . Only accommodate 10 folk so you not a number but a guest . Tents have aircon if needed , we slept with the side flaps and one door flat open . First for the noise at night and the breeze. Outdoor shower which looks onto the bush as part of the bathroom. Had an impala ram grazing while I was in the shower. Meals are fresh and very tasty . Good wholesome home cooking . Thanks Chef .
The camp is not completely fenced in , brilliant as it allows wildlife to walk through except elephants and giraffe . You never know what you could see ?
At night a guide walks you to your tent for a specifically reason apart from the curtesy but incase any Big 5 around. Last night had 4 Buffalo bulls sleeping about 4 M from our tent . Exciting stuff . Guide had to get back up to get them to move so we could walk back. No time were we in danger and the guide, Jesse told us what to do. Great experience .

Thank you to the KwaMbili team for an absolutely fabulous stay. Our expectations were exceeded on every level. We loved that KwaMbili is a small lodge and that it is the perfect balance between rustic and unpretentious yet luxurious and fine dining at the same time. We loved the 'Out of Africa' theme. It was perfect for our family of 4 and we, including our two teenage girls, enjoyed it immensely.

It is a totally immersive bush experience. We were there for 4 nights (8 game drives) and each outing was different and exciting in its own way. Our game ranger (Andi) and tracker (Eddie) were outstanding. Their skill, enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge were terrific. Using their excellent tracking skills, we were privileged to enjoy an epic leopard sighting as well as a pair of lions mating and to top it all, wild dog, hyena and leopard in one spot. But it is not all about the Big 5. The bird and small animal sightings, particularly the number of birds of prey, were fabulous too. Having the hide overlooking a small water hole with a bigger dam in the near distance also meant that we could continue our game viewing when back in camp and at night.

We stayed in the chalets which are very comfortable and classically appointed. The food was excellent and our dietary preferences were accommodated. We loved the dinner in the hide in particular. Eating a fabulous dinner while watching the nocturnal activity of porcupine, honey badger, civet cat and hyena was simply unbeatable.

When not on game drives or in the very comfortable hide, we enjoyed the swimming pool area (small but perfectly adequate) and made use of the comfortable lounge area.

All in all an excellent trip and very good value for money. Highly recommended.

Short notice overnight excursion with an sunset and sunrise game drive. From arrival we were treated to an amazing experience and made to feel welcome and comfortable in the surrounding of the lodge and within the team. Accommodation was of the highest calibre in the lap of luxury in such wild and beautiful surroundings. Kwambilli can cater for 10 but there were just the 2 of us out of the main season. I would highly recommend going outside of main holidays as this place is worth experiencing with the minimal of external noise. We were treated in to two very eventful game drives so much to see and with really knowledgeable and passionate guides. The evening meal was stunning under an amazing sky. Thank you so much to Wesley and Stu for an awesome experience. Very highly recommended.

Our stay at KwaMbili was absolutely incredible. Our ranger and tracker (and also the rest of the amazing team) gave their very best to make the stay incredible for us - with which they were successful.
KwaMbili is the perfect value for money lodge, and if you are not looking for the most luxurious place (like we did), you will absolutely love KwaMbili! It has a family atmosphere and you feel more than welcome. The food is amazing, neither too much nor too less and our ranger & spotter made sure we had some great sighting.
We will definitely come to KwaMbili again and recommend everyone else to do so as well :-)

We have not long returned from enjoying six utterly fabulous days at KwaMbili. The entire experience was just magical. My wife and I stayed in one tent and my daughter and her partner in another. The luxury tents, which resembled something from the movie Out of Africa, were special and secure, and added to the wonderful experience. Our tent overlooked a waterhole, which was often frequented by elephants and at one point lions. Ross and his wife Annalieke, the owners of KwaMbili, made us so welcome, as did all the staff of the lodge. Ross is an inspiration and a man who clearly cares deeply about the Kruger, conservation and his lodge.

As a family, we went of two game drives per day and thanks to our excellent ranger, Jessie and our ‘eagle eyed’ guides Squirrel and Eddie, we saw so much wildlife that it is still hard to comprehend. Jessie was a font of knowledge and made the holiday for us. We simply cannot praise KwaMbili and its staff enough. The accommodation was beyond excellent, the food sublime and the views and experience were just breath taking. If you want to do a fun and safe safari in the Kruger, then look no further – KwaMbili is most assuredly the place to go. We will be back next year. Many thanks again to Ross and his excellent team.

January is peak summer so days are very hot and possible humid. Temperatures can reach upper 30 plus. Thunderstorm possible as its the rainy season, however with the heat it dries up very quickly. Bush could be very thick and grass long if it's been a good rain season.

As this was our first Safari, we don’t have anything to compare it to. We thought it was amazing and certainly didn’t feel like we were in a zoo. This private game reserve has no fencing with the Kruga . At Thorny Bush you track the animals, giving a really authentic feeling of being in the wilderness. Definitely preferable to sitting around a camp watering hole waiting for the animals to come to you. A German visitor who had been on many safaris was disappointed with the amount of wildlife seen on the first day. After spending time understanding how the park works he agreed that he had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
