What an experience! The entire Makutsi team was professional, accommodating, very knowledgeable and fun! They made this trip a once in a lifetime adventure! Our rondovel was clean and stocked with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Meals were delicious and I loved the family style dinner gatherings. The guides were professional, very informative and determined to find the wildlife for us. I thought this would be a once in a lifetime....but, it was so wonderful that I will be back!!! Thank you Makutsi!

We stayed at Makutsi Safari Springs with our family of five (comprising 2xAdults, 2x20 year olds and a 17 year old) in late January and early February 2024. It was by far the best holiday that we have ever had as a family! The rustic setting, lodges and meals, contributed to the safari experience. It was fun helping to spot the animals and them seeing them up close at different times of the day. The Safari staff were extremely knowledgeable about the animals and birdlife we saw (we also have no idea how they managed to find their way around the Reserve in their off road jeeps). The co-ordination between all the guides via radio showed great team work and often a determination with the guide to make it to where certain animals had been spotted. We saw far more than we had hoped for. Staff at all levels were approachable, welcoming and caring. One of our family members became ill and the care provide to us by Makutsi staff (including to hospital and back) was exceptional. Thank you Makutsi! You have given us memories we will never forget.

This review is far different from the ones I have read from previous visitors.  The food supplied is basic in the main for a resort. There is a set single menu with no other options and the menu offered is different to say the least. The management seem to be on a mission to provide the cheapest meals possible which in reality is a disappointment as we have no idea how people have been posting glowing reviews of the food supplied. We have just completed a trip to NZ south Island and even small town motels provided far better food. Serving breakfast you get a single slice of bacon on the day they serve bacon. The other days it was eggs with vegetables, or mince. No other breakfast options of a cooked variety are offered. The European food was very simple, basically ham and cheese for breakfast and toast with two types of jam. We asked about a meat pie for lunch. The reply was its frozen so no. In one hour a frozen pie can be cooked in an oven. It can be defrosted in a microwave and cooked but it was a no. No thinking outside of the box. The couple we travelled with ordered lunch and they put it down for 1pm. We arrived back late and they asked if they could delay it. The answer, no, yet they could see the items ready to be cooked in a sandwich press so it could have been delayed. Once again no flexibility so they had to rush into the dining area to eat lunch instead if the guest being the preferred priority and working around them as there was no one else being fed. The Kruger Trip 5 am start. Breakfast packs were supplied. This consisted of two sandwiches with one piece of ham so thin it was almost see through.  Half a lettuce and sliced cucumber. A boiled egg and 3 small meatballs. Score, 2 out of 10. How they think this is an acceptable breakfast is beyond me and we have travelled the world. The same bus was used as the mountains trip which is not the greatest and the suspension is dubious at best. Why they use this bus for a 12 hour trip when they have a great reasonably new 12 seater is another mystery of this place. The trip itself was fine, the driver was very knowledgeable however the trip on the dirt roads was bone shocking once again. The stop in the middle was fine however the shop is expensive for any souvenirs. The resort is tired and items are broken around the place and don't appear to get looked at. One of the outside lounges at our room was torn so unusable. The seating area between the two huts had a overhead fan, great, but it didn't work. The roads around the resort have potholes everywhere. They have a bulldozer as we saw evidence of its use so why the roads are not repaired is beyond us. Some of the lounge chairs around the main pool are torn or broken and appear to have been for quite a while. The WiFi is confined to a single router in the library. A simple mesh system for a few hundred dollars could boost it around the main pool and dining area. In today's market this is pretty much a given for any resort. With the availability of starlink terminals and cheap internet there is no real excuse for not having it available. The shop could stock some basics like chocolate bars, chips etc that have long shelf life as there is no food available to purchase outside of a very basic lunchtime menu and is only open between 9 and 12. On a positive, juseco, the guide was exceptional.  The other guides were all very good and the safaris were all great. The Cheetah walk was exceptional. The mineral pool was excellent and did its job as our sore joints from rough rides on the safaris disappeared. In the end the staff were good, the comment we heard one day was "we get to feed them the proper way we want" which indicates its a management issue in respect to food quality which really let's the place down. Maintenance needs a good deal of work but the animals are certainly great viewing. As a follow up to the reply from management.  The resort advertised that meals are included.  It does not explain that it is a single choice dinner or that breakfast is restricted to things such one single piece of bacon for breaking, not two or three, but one which is cost issue. We have travelled the world extensively and have never experienced this. The food quality is the other issue, the picture of the entrees on the bread is an example and for a resort is sub standard in any respects so using food wasted as an example does not really explain the lower standards of the meals as we expected a better quality. People we discussed this with agreed and returned for the wildlife,  not the food and extending the wifi to the eating area and pool just makes it easier to basic housekeeping.  We had phone and data for the majority of the time at the resort of our own as phone coverage is in place and other resorts such as next door offer the service.

Thank you very much for your long and informative review. We are sorry to hear that all of the experiences at Makutsi were not what you expected, however happy to hear that you really enjoyed our game drives and the staff. Although we understand that everybody has different expectations, and we certainly are not perfect, there are 2 points I would like to explain further.... - It is not a secret that at Makutsi we serve a different, set 3-course meal every day. This is clearly mentioned on our website and all brochures etc. There are several reasons for this, but mainly it means we can order as much as we need, and we never waste any food, which also allows us to control cost. It also means everyone eats together and the same meal, which creates a great atmosphere between the different guests. This is our philosophy, and luckily most of our clients come back because of this. - We also know that we could easily offer a stronger WIFI connection, so it could reach around the pool area etc....this is something we certainly don't want to do, not because of cost, but because of the disturbances it creates. Most guests come to Makutsi to relax, enjoy nature, and get away from too much technology, so when reading a book at the pool, the last thing they want is for someone to do a Facetime call...We have a place with WIFI connection, free of charge, where anybody can go to send some messages and check emails, however we do not want to offer WIFI around pool or at dinner time, because people are then invited to sit on their phones rather than talk to each other and enjoy nature and each others company. We would like to thank you again for visiting us at Makutsi, and we will always do our best to improve, there are always areas we can improve. At the same time, we are proud to follow our philosophy for over 45 years, and for welcoming back so many regular return clients because of this. Kind regards from all the Makutsi Team

We stayed for 8 days at the lodge and had been looking g forward to the trip for 3 years due to Covid. We were not disappointed. The lodge is well run and being a family based company you are sure to have a plenty of personal attention from the crew and staff. The rooms are a local design and the lodge has a great pool and mineral springs pool as well. We did morning and afternoon safaris, including an evening one and a two day tented stay walking safari. Rob is one of the most knowledgeable guides we met with an incredible knowledge of fauna, wildlife local to the area, who looked after us for the two day walk. All the guides are excellent and have a great passion and knowledge of the animals and area. The food is plenty and fresh from the local gardens and surrounds. Karen and Anke are great hosts and we had the best time. If you are looking for a Soith Africa safari experience, I strongly recommend these guys!

10/10! As a solo female traveller (yay! no single supplement at Makutsi!) travelling from Western Australia. I found the whole process of being met at Hoedspruit Airport by the professional and friendly staff member Ralf a very positive start. Then on arrival at Makutsi Springs a cooling refreshment drink from the lovely Anke! My room (rondavel) was fantastic, large with good furnishings in line with the surroundings, with a comfy double bed and mosquito net. The pool is gorgeous and very relaxing, along with a relaxing library and wifi. The linen was good quality along with the towels. From day one until my departure, when I was given a big hug from Anke, I felt very safe and no question was too much for the staff (in fact they went above and beyond at all times- especially when I squeezed in an on off-itinerary Kruger Park day trip!). The food was good and fresh. The safari drives were fantastic and I saw more than I expected I with the excellent, knowledgeable (and funny) Bjorn, and also Jesco & Bethanel (?) The tented camp is just what I had envisioned (and as represented in the website). Our trekking guide was Rob, who has an incredible knowledge of all that encopmasses safety (always paramount), animals, birds, land and nature. Thank you Mavis for the delish food and beautiful smile, always! I learned so much from Rob and the other guides which made this trip not only a massive bucket list 'tick', but also the knowledge I gained in my time there (it was only a week but seemed longer) I would 100% recommend Makutsi Safari Springs (and Bench Africa who organised the trip) to experience the true nature of safari along with exceptional guest service!!

We just spent a week at Makutsi Safari Springs and had a tremendous week. This small (5000hectare) family owned safari park provides an authentic African experience with accommodation in a rondavel which was large, clean and comfortable and air conditioned. The camp is rustic but that’s the charm. Animals graze, the owners and staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Meals are served family style so everyone mixes. We had four game drives at Makutsi and saw so many animals up close. Our guide, Bethuel, was tops at tracking and finding every animal we could’ve hoped to see- lions, leopard, cheetah, elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffe, zebra, antelope, buffalo and many more. The day trips to Blyde River Canyon and Kruger also added another dimension to our week. If you’re after a busy touristy lodge, this is not for you. But if you’re after a real African experience with great game viewing then Makutsi is the place. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Excellent service and hospitality. Probably the best value in our entire Southern Africa trip. Game drives were successful, well organised and scheduled.. This is an extremely well-run family business. The guides were all very knowledgeable and professional. Accommodation and food were excellent value. Would certainly recommend this to anyone.

What an incredible experience we had here. The warm, friendly atmosphere means nobody can feel lonely here and the organization was first rate. They knew where everyone was and where the animals were at all times so safety was never an issue. We had a lioness wander through camp during our visit. It is a fantastic privilege to be able to get so close to them. Their commitment to the safety & long-term survival of the wildlife was commendable. We did the Cheetah experience with Ralph and I would highly recommend it. Our rondel was comfy, clean and always surrounded by kudu, birds, impala etc. Great showers too! Staff were unfailingly cheerful and helpful. Only one request please, get a self-serve espresso machine for the library/wifi lounge.

We spent 6 days at this amazing place. The owners and staff were absolutely fantastic. We felt very welcome. We saw the Big 5 during our stay. The guides were passionate about the wildlife and taught us a great deal. It was very cold in the early mornings when leaving on safari and we were given blankets and hot water bottles to help with our discomfort. The accommodation was adequate for our needs and was clean and comfortable. The meals also adequate. You would most certainly be able to stay at a much more luxurious reserve if you wished, but Makutsi is a special place. The experience was about the wildlife for us. Animals roam freely through the camp which you wont find anywhere else. Overall our experience was top notch. Simply loved the place.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this informative and positive review! We are very happy to hear how much you enjoyed your time at Makutsi, even with the very chilly morning drives :) As you say very accurately, there are many more luxurious lodges out there, who will also also offer some great experiences, however Makutsi is a special place wich offers something a bit different: longer stays, affordable & authentic wildlife experiences, a place where you have enough time to learn about the area, recharge those batteries, and feel like you have become part of the family. We are so happy that you enjoyed these aspects so much, and wish you all the best going forward. Thank you again for your visit, and lots of regards from all the Makutsi Team.
