Rustic accommodations. Our cabin backed to the river and each morning we could hear the two Hippo's. We enjoyed seeing and hearing them each morning. At night we enjoyed the bug sounds. The staff was very nice. We were there for Christmas Eve and Day and the staff decorated the Christmas Eve dinner table to make it festive which all the visitors appreciated.

I recommend to improvement opportunities. The first is the 45-60 minute safari ride to Kruger National Park. The driver drove too fast on the gravel roads which was unsafe and made the ride miserable. At one point he almost lost control of the vehicle on the gravel roads as the rear end slipped out. One the way back, before we got into the vehicle I asked the driver to slow down and drive safer and he did.

My second suggestion is for the safari guide, Fabien to increase their customer service levels. I know the guides have seen the sights many times, but suggest they ask the visitors if they've seen enough and are ready to move to the next sight before driving away. Secondly, I suggest Klaserie ban smoking on the Safari's both by the guides and visitors. It's a danger to both the wild life and nature, especially with the high temperatures and dry conditions. Use Australia as an example how a fire could get out of control. The whole safari could be wiped out because of a careless smoker. Fabien was more concerned with having his cigarette during our coffee breaks than with making coffee for the visitors.

Good Day Thank you for your review posted on TripAdvisor. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us apart from the reckless drive you had on your way to Kruger Park. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention. It is the rule that guides adhere to the speed limits and that no smoking is allowed on the vehicles. The safety and comfort of our guests are our priority and under no circumstances should guests feel nervous or unsafe during their safari. I wholeheartedly agree - It is most dangerous, particularly during the dry season to smoke in the reserves, as a fire can easily be caused by a careless smoker. We would like to apologize for any discomfort caused and would once again like to thank you for taking the trouble and time to bring these points to our attention. It is only through positive criticism and feedback that we can address and rectify these issues. Your review will definitely be addressed with the relevant people and the necessary steps will be taken to create a safe, pleasant and enjoyable stay and safari experience in future. May we wish you the very best and hope to see you back here someday! Kindest regards Linda Schoultz on behalf of the entire Klaserie River Safari Lodge team.

We came to South Africa to enjoy several days Safari in Kruger Park and in a private reserve. Our best moments were at Klaserie River Safari Lodge.

The highlights were the game drives with Lauren, the owner and manager. Full board included 2 activities a day. We started with an afternoon game drive and saw a beautiful male leopard, next morning a bush walk along Impala, giraffes (a baby giraffe!) where Lauren explained us all the animal tracks, in the late afternoon we saw mating lions Lauren had tracked them down from a single roar we heard and the tracks. Fotos of a lifetime !

The lodge with wooden structures in traditional style is very nicely set up at the banks of a small river with a resident hippo family right under our porch, The huts with thatched roof are decorated in a nice safari style. Two swimming pools.

The food by the cook Steven was superbe. The breakfast including fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, muesli and the English breakfast eggs. A light lunch is served, which had salad and quiche on fay one, and very good chicken wraps on day 2. Three course dinner with BBQ, and our second with Impala stew. Very good deserts.

We highly recommend this place and felt very welcome by the owner and staff.

Stayed for two nights Jan 2020. Really enjoyed our stay, rooms very nice and good offerings (cheap mini bar and laundry). Very nice food provided and beds were comfortable. Morning and afternoon game drives or walks were included as well as all main meals. We didn’t do a walk but explored the property ourselves and found lots of giraffes/zebras.

Highlight was the game drives with Vusie (unsure of spelling). He was AMAZING! Very courteous to guests as well as the animals on the reserve. He had so much knowledge and tracking skills, he really made our trip. Our last game drive was with another guide who (unfortunately) was no where near as good. Ask for Vusie!!

Overall a lovely stay

The place was very expensive (at least according to my budget) but i was underwhelmed as i was expecting 5 star but it was average. Also, the milk and teas in the room was all expired, and when i alerted the staff was told that they had not checked and all of it was expired. Also, the muesli at breakfast was very stale and had some crawling insects, and when I alerted staff they said nothing was wrong with it. It really put me off.

Dear Rendani, Thank you for your feedback all your comments can help us improve and make your stay most pleasurable. Firstly I would like to state we are not a 5-star lodge and we do not advertise being such. We are in fact 3-star and we try to provide a 5-star service to the best of our ability. We are very sorry to hear you did not feel this was what you expected. Please understand the weekend you visited was the first official weekend of reopening and the staff's first week back after the covid pandemic. With regards to the complimentary coffee station provided in your room. We do believe the stock which was replaced by the housekeepers was not the fresh stock as they were not aware of where the new and old stock had been separated. This has been resolved and all the old stock was discarded. We did provide you with fresh milk once this has brought to our attention. The muesli at breakfast was discarded after you had mentioned you were unhappy, we apologized had offered to replace it which you declined and ordered a cooked breakfast. At check out, we asked for your feedback form and asked if you had any comments again you told us you had a most enjoyable stay. We are very sorry to hear of your unpleasant experience. Kind Regards Lauren

We just want to start off by thanking you guys for taking us on such short notice - we had an absolute blast during our stay at Klaserie River Safari Lodge. Lauren went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable and memorable. The day trip to the Kruger was a bucket list item for us, and we thoroughly enjoyed it - brunch served at a perfect picnic spot in the KNP just brought back so many good childhood memories for the both of us, and we can never thank you enough for that. From the room to dinner and breakfast, we can’t find fault with anything. Units are well equipped and clean. We were really able to just relax and take in every moment of the magnificent bush. Keep up the great work Lauren! We will see you again! :) Kobus & Sharnet Kotzé

For the price I paid , I would say don’t stay here!

This is a property that over charge for sure.
Dinner is good, Breadfast is not up to my standard, lunch just ok.

I paid around USD 600. Which included two game drive and meals .

But for this price I can stay else where ( check my other review. A place that’s much nicer. Cleaner and more trendy !

This place is old and the room is small and dim .
Very outdated .

The game driver area is ugly . Only few places are nice looking . I saw a lot of birds. But no lion , no rhino etc I guess not in this area but at more south area.

Don’t stay in this hotel , I was fool by the name as there is a higher class hotel which has a similar name . I mixed them up and book it!

I usually won’t make this kind of mistake! I suddenly added a day of my trip , so I was in rush to book a place, I was a fool!

This is the worst decision in my entire trip .

I won’t say the stay is terrible but just not meet my expectation.

As I looked at another hotel photo when I booked it ! Again as I paid USD 600. I would say not here !

Don’t stay here, try a better place but u end up paying the similar price !

PS! They charge the drink during safari ..... without giving u a menu and telling u there is a charge. This is crazy ! Although only little money but this is not a honest way to do business.

Hi Eva – In response to your review on TripAdvisor, I would like to comment as follows – I regret to read that we did not meet your expectations – since Klaserie River Safari Lodge, as a 3 star lodge, have received numerous ‘Certificates of Excellence’ and ‘Best Value’ awards during the last 3 years. Your accommodation included three balanced meals – breakfast (3 course), lunch and dinner (3 course) and 2 game drives per day. I also regret that the Lodge’s décor does not appeal to you – but that is your personal view a matter of taste. (See comments from other guests below) We are a full board lodge, but drinks are not included.. We offer our guests complementary sparkling or still waters on each game drive. Our guides usually ask the guests what they would like to drink before they go on a game drive and pack the drinks into a cooler box, as the space on the Open Safari Vehicle is limited. At any 3 star lodge, you will be required to pay for your drinks – unless it is a 5 star lodge where it would be included in your accommodation – at obviously more than your $600 per night. It is a reasonable price for 3 people. The reason for the bush looking ‘ugly’ in your opinion, is due to the fact that it is winter and the bush is dry due to lack of rain. The elephants have caused havoc in this specific area and unfortunately .......that is nature. Animals are migratory and move through the bush the whole time - they are not collared to be tracked – they move in their natural way and unfortunately you won’t find lion or rhino around every corner of the bush. If your stay at our Lodge was longer than the 1 day, you might have seen more animals. All the other guests who stayed at the lodge on the same day as you (and longer) – left amazing messages in our visitor’s book – and I quote - ‘Fantastic’; ‘Wonderful and very pleasant stay, nice rooms, food & staff’; ‘It was awesome’; ’Wonderful stay on the river front, fantastic staff, great food, an awesome experience’; ‘Beautiful location, lovely guides and staff. We enjoyed our time here – can’t wait to come back’; ‘This place is like a paradise’ (just to name a few) I honestly believe that you cannot judge your stay by checking in in the afternoon and checking out the following morning. If you wanted 5 star accommodation and Cordon Bleu cuisine, you should have unfortunately, made a more obvious choice. May we wish you the very best for the future. Kindest regards, Linda Schoultz FOH

Klaserie has a personal feel to it, and the small team hosting you there is generally very helpful. The most outstanding feature of the stay here is the 2 safari guides, Mike and Dave. I did a safari off-property with another guide and the comparison was astonishing - the Klaserie guides were vastly superior and are the biggest reason to stay here. Note that the team is VERY small (e.g. the safari guides will also pour wine and clear dishes after dinner), so best to pre-book any activities or risk getting there and finding no-one is available to host them.

Rooms - The lodge itself is pretty average (not quite as fancy as the photos imply). Rooms and common areas are quite basic, although the beds are comfy, there is a nice pool area and the location by the river is relaxing (note that the hippo has disappeared for now though). Try to choose rooms near the common area (Rooms 1 thru 4) so you can pick up the internet, otherwise you have to exit your room to get wifi (and there was no cell service).

Food - The chef is new and a sweet, soft-spoken person, so I am sorry to say I was rather disappointed with the food. I found the quality was VERY variable, ranging from a couple of delicious steak and chicken dinners to a downright awful hamburger in an extremely dry 'bun' and a lunch of overly salty meatballs in a brown sauce with tasteless parboiled rice. There were, however, some decent, and very reasonably priced wine options.

Value - Regarding activities, only bush walks and game drives on the lodge's nearby property are included in your nightly rate; you pay extra for everything else - airport pick-ups/drop-offs, trips to Kruger, Kapama and other Big 5 reserves, scenic drives etc. Drinks and even bottled water are not included (even on the lodge's own walks & drives) and although lunch is included in your rate, if you do a day trip with the lodge, you must buy your own lunch outside. Considering all this, it's hard to say whether Klaserie was really good value. Research the location carefully before deciding - if you're after the Big 5, it might be better to stay at a lodge in a Big 5 reserve like Kapama (next door), where some of the drives you might want are already included in the nightly rate.

the bush walk and/or game drive on the private reserve will be arranged on short notice, usually the evening before. If you want to go to Kruger, that is a full day (12-14h) and should be arranged at least one or two days in advance, you may email the lodge beforehand if you know your dates.

Hi - Thank you for your enquiry. I would recommend hiking boots as the bush has very nasty thorns which will go right through a tennis shoe or something similar. If you do not want to go to the expense of purchasing hiking boots, I would recommend a sturdy supportive closed shoe with a thick sole. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Looking forward to having you spend some time at Klaserie River Safari Lodge. Kindest regards, Linda

Have you looked at the 4 night special offer that includes a day in Kruger and the river cruise ? You would then just need to add an extra day in Kruger although I would recommend going on a different drive for the additional day. If you email them directly they will give you a price
