The Nautilus Resort is a must-stay if you find yourself in the beautiful island of Kosrae. I really enjoyed the camaraderie built with other guests, where there weren't the many distractions of modern life. Instead, I happily enjoyed deep conversations with hotel staff and other guests, hanging out by the pool in a well-appointed patio area. When I needed to, I would return to my room to escape the heat and humidity, and take advantage of the air con. 10/10 recommend, can't wait to go again!

Situated directly across from the Blue Hole, Kosrae Nautilus Resort is a understated jewel of a resort. Clean, attractive, efficiently run with on-site owners (Doug and Sally Bietz), a perfect location, well-trained staff, great food, and easy access to diving and snorkeling. The resort has solar power and a rainwater collection system. The resort will help you arrange tours of Kosrae, call a taxi, rent a car, and assist you in anyway they can. Free wi-fi connection in the lobby and the restaurant. You can purchase a card for access in your room.

Rooms have 2 double beds, shower/tub, sink, toilet, small refrigerator, closet, ceiling fan, reading lights, and lots of counter space. Air conditioner worked very well and was quiet. Electrical outlets are standard US. Outlets were plentiful but we brought some power strips with multiple plug-ins just in case. Room was comfortable. You could hear your next door neighbors, though we had no problems. TV worked OK, received a few stations, ESPN, BBC, CNN, a Japanese station. Water in room should not be used for drinking or brushing your teeth. Housekeeping brings a fresh pitcher of drinking water every day. If we ran out we would go to the restaurant for a refill. Water in the room, sink and shower, was mostly reliable, sometimes would stop for about a minute, then would come back on. I believe it is collected rainwater. Ants in room, no problem, just don't leave out anything they might like to eat. We spilled some mouthwash they seemed to like (grin). We even took advantage of their laundry service. We sorted our clothes, filled out the list, and left the dirty clothes in the provided laundry bag before our morning room cleaning. The clothes were always returned the same day, clean and folded.

Restaurant food is fresh, delicious, and well-prepared. The menu is limited but very good. Breakfast, all the usual offerings, eggs, bacon, sausage (Portuguese), toast, fried rice, fruit, pancakes, French toast. Lunch and dinner, salads, sandwiches, stir fry, fried rice, noodles, pizza, chicken, fish, the fish was so good, even I liked it! They also have some specials for dinner and lunch.

The Nautilus's restaurant is also very popular with the local people of Kosrae. It seems to be a meeting place for breakfast. We enjoyed saying good morning to everyone as we walked past the full poolside tables on our way inside the restaurant. Often locals stop by Nautilus for take-out. Sunday can be a busy day for lunch, after church, and for dinner. You can always order take-out and take it to your room as well.

Happy Hour is Monday-Saturday, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., all beer and wine $4.00.

No alcohol on Sundays. It is against Kosrean Law to serve or drink alcohol on Sundays. You can drink it in your room, just order some extra bottles on Saturday and keep in your mini-fridge. We forgot to do that. Women should be covered from their upper arms to their knees, outside of the resort, but I did wear tank tops and shorts.

Resort grounds are beautiful. We enjoyed the back lawn area for bird watching, reading, and relaxing. There is a swinging bench and a hammock. Nautilus has a vegetable and fruit garden behind the rooms as well. You may notice the little holes in the lawn, these are from Land Crabs. We got to see a couple of them above ground and they are just huge. I don't know how they fit down those tiny holes. The kayaks are also on the back lawn next to the mangrove channel. They can only be used during high tide because it is too shallow otherwise. Staff will also carry the kayaks over to the ocean side. Small attractive swimming pool, deck, loungers, chairs and tables. Our nightly entertainment was sitting on the deck watching the geckos catching insects around the lights.

Unfortunately, during our visit, high tide was not high during the day when we wanted to snorkel or kayak. If these activities are important to you, then try to plan your visit to Kosrae around the tide table. Doug gave us a copy when we checked in for the week we were there. The tide table for Pohnpei is used for Kosrae, add about an hour for Kosrae.

Blue Hole Snorkeling: The Blue Hole is just that, a large, deep, round hole (opening) in the sand and eel grass flats, surrounded by coral. Blue Hole snorkeling is best done at high tide, but can be snorkeled anytime.

There is a wooden gazebo on the grassy area just above the beach across the road from Nautilus and we would walk in from there, and use it as a site guide for walking back. If the tide is low you walk out to the Blue Hole, over the sand flats covered with shallow water (6 inches deep), and you walk back to the beach. You will need dive boots or reef runners to protect your feet from rocks and coral, surface is uneven. If the tide is high you can snorkel from the beach and snorkel back. When the sun is out the shallow water becomes unimaginably hot.

The Blue Hole itself is cooler, thank goodness. The Blue Hole is surrounded by coral and is very deep. We were able to make our way into the Blue Hole without touching or standing on coral, but it was not easy. Doug said everyone walks on the coral but we just could not do it. During high tide I am sure it is much easier. The visibility was compromised by recent storms and from fresh water entering the Blue Hole. One day while snorkeling we noticed some bubbles coming up from the depths, we could see the shimmer in the water from salt and fresh water mixing, and the water was suddenly hot. A very unique experience. Doug mentioned that there may be fresh water springs at the bottom. We saw Stingrays, Lionfish, all the expected tropical fish in our guide book … we just had to look harder for them, because of poor visibility and rafts of eel grass floating on the surface.

The surrounding sand flats, eel grass, and patch coral would be fantastic to snorkel during high tide. The little bit I did do in maybe 3 feet of water was grand. Saw a Stingray that easily had a 4-5 foot wingspan. He was resting on the sand, just hanging out. I saw some Shrimp and Shrimpgoby interactions, from inches away, while I floated above them. Doug also mentioned walking out to the ocean break where there are lots of tide pools, and the Stingrays like to hang out in the sand. You can just sit there and watch them.

Boat Snorkeling with Nautilus: Nautilus has very well-maintained boats and a safe operation. Doug (owner) and Salik (dive staff) always make sure they have a back-up motor, back-up battery, and extra gasoline. Ladder provided an easy place to enter and exit the water. I appreciated it's sturdiness. Snacks after dives and snorkeling were bananas, tangerines, and fresh water to drink. Lunch was either a fish burger or chicken burger, they tasted great. Towels are provided. All of the boat snorkels were open ocean snorkeling, waves, swells, current, snorkeling in about 30 feet of water.

One memorable day as we were leaving Lelu Harbor in Nautilus's boat we were surrounded by Dolphins. Doug asked if one of us wanted to go in the water with them and I jumped at the chance. I put on my snorkel and mask, climbed down the ladder, and hung onto the ladder with my right hand, while Doug drove very slowly. The Dolphins came within 10 feet of me (10-15 dolphins). They would cock their heads and look curiously at me, I could hear them click, and watch them spin around and go belly-up. An experience of a lifetime!

Another day Doug moored at a spot on the ocean side of the Blue Hole. My husband came upon a squadron of Spotted Eagle Rays beneath him in about 30 feet of water. We watched 8 of them swim patterns and circles, I don't think they even knew we were there. We did get some good video of them.

Salik took us out to Hiroshi Point on our last day. The ocean conditions had improved and it was our best day for snorkeling. The hard coral was simply spectacular, we could get in a little shallower, the visibility had improved, and there were lots of fish. Currents and chop had tapered off.

The resort has a place to rinse off your snorkeling and diving gear, and to hang it up to dry, just behind the restaurant near the pool area. You can also rent gear.

Kosrae is a beautiful island. Mountainous and green. Other than snorkeling we took walks along the main road. It is fun to see how the locals live, they are nice and friendly, and very kind. Doug warned us to watch out for territorial dogs, and though we were prepared, we were never challenged. There is, surprisingly, a lot of traffic. We both had good books to read and laying on the bed in our air conditioned room was hard to beat (in between snorkeling and meals). We did not rent a car and it might have been easier if we did. Taxis were sometimes slow to arrive and unreliable. But you can't beat the price, US $1.00 per person. We were glad we had brought lots of cash in small denominations to pay for the taxis and the tours. We had a very relaxing stay. But, we wish we had planned our visit based on the times of the high tide.

We also took some tours: Utwe Mangrove Tour, Ka Forest, Lelu Ruins, Green Banana Paper Company. And we visited Pacific Treelodge and had lunch at Bully's. I have reviewed these separately as well as the United flight from Honolulu to Kosrae, stopping in Majuro, and Kwajalien.

This was our fourth time back to the Kosrae Nautilus Resor(not an easy trip to get to BUT WELL WORTH IT. Doug and Sally who own and run this gem are the most knowledgeable "friends" you could every want when traveling 12,000 miles from NY. The main reason traveling so far was to dive the "Hard Coral Capital of the World". We say this with authority while comparing the sites we dove to Papua, Solomon’s and even Sipidan(when you could stay on the island). Aside from 70-100+ ft. visibility the fish life and nudi's were amazing.Every site was different: layers upon layers of the most healthy plate/piller etc. coral. Doug's boat was the perfect boat to dive from. He has two, one at each dockage so you can dive whenever the weather changes. Selik, his dive master and master helper will help lead your dive without any major rules or regulations. There were times we were the only divers on board. The sandwiches between dives were to die for. The resort has an immaculate pool and a fun dining room with a fun menu The rooms are very large and the airconditioning works superbly. The dive room is perfect. All fills were 3000psi. There is just too much to write about. Feel free to email us at gnil50@aol.com for more info and pics.

A group of us went to dive and everything was wonderful at this dive resort!

The rooms were comfortable, well decorated and very clean! Hot water pot and coffee, tea and condiments provided. Mini fridge. Nice desk area and comfy beds.

The restaurant had a nice selection and they were very accommodating for our one dairy free traveler. The food was tasty and very reasonable. The staff was wonderful!

The pool is not to be missed! Nice covered areas to relax and eat or stay connected online. The grounds were very well maintained and lovely in the back with lots of trees and covered swing. We hung out there every morning.

The dive crew was top notch! A short drive to the dock and everything was taken care of for us. Even though the weather wasn't ideal, our Divemaster Salik, knew where to take us and point things out. Lovely diving and not one other diver in site!

Upon return all of our dive gear was washed and put away. Safety was PADI standards. We had two wonderful days of diving ~ just wish it was longer.

We rented a car for a ridiculously low price on Sunday, when this church going island is basically shut down. We never did find the waterfall but we had a great day! Truly the "Garden Island".

The staff was very accommodating and friendly. When we come again, we will stay at the Kosrae Nautilus Resort.

Only two complaints. More stuff to buy in the shop! Local crafts as well as logo gear~ LOL And maybe an actual map showing small off-roads to waterfall- LOL

I didn't even know where the island was until I booked my trip, and now I will never forget. Doug and Sally found paradise twenty years ago and have managed to share a bit of it with every person that comes through their doors.

The diving was phenomenal. Clear, warm waters combined with immaculate marine life would have been worth any number of inconveniences to get there. However, the comfort and convenience of their dive boat was made even better by the personal touch we felt on every dive. Even being in the business for as long as he has, Doug was excited about every dive and showing us as much as he could in the four days we were there.

Beginning and ending every day in the resort was a treat. It is hard to believe the place is over 16 years old. The rooms are very comfortable and while we felt a bit spoiled with an air-conditioned room, it was very nice to be able to keep our camera housings free of moisture. Coffee in the morning and a well deserved beer in the evening were both enjoyed in the outdoor seating area of the restaurant. The food was delicious and we abolutely ate our fair share.

While there are hundreds more places in the world I have left to explore, getting back to Kosrae is a must!

This was my first trip to any pacific island past Hawaii and I was not disappointed. Kosrae is beautiful with a lot to offer, both under and on top of the water.

I was lucky enough to stay at Kosrae Nautilus Resort and was extremely happy with my choice. I was there for 11 nights in May, 2011. The staff was extremely friendly and always working hard to maintain the beauty of the resort. Doug and Sally Beitz, the owners, seem to take a lot of pride in their place and it really shows.

The food was delicious and plentiful so I ate there for most meals. I couldn't stay away from the sashimi - to die for! My room was clean and the A/C worked great for someone coming from the Pacific NW United States and not used to the humidity of the pacific islands.

The diving was FANTASTIC! Doug runs the dive op and he and his staff work hard to provide an excellent dive experience. I logged 18 dives with them including two separate night dives. I was the only diver most days so it was all very relaxing but I would imagine it would feel much the same with a larger group. Salyk was the boat captain and dove with me a few times as well while Doug captained the boat. I enjoyed diving with both as it was clearly evident that these guys truly enjoy diving; not like some dive ops where you can tell the dive master can hardly stand to do another dive. Nautilus' boats are clean, roomy, well appointed and well maintained. Very comfortable to dive off of. They have a nice rinse station at the resort so I was glad to be able to keep all of my gear nice and clean. They were very helpful when it came to storing my gear and packing it for me before my dives. The diving on Kosrae is gorgeous. The hard coral is healthy and HUGE; home to a wide array of marine life to enjoy. It was sensory overload underwater and I had to almost make a decision before I descended on whether I was going to seek out micro stuff or bigger animals because if I tried to see both - I'd miss out. Gosh, I could go on and on. You just have to experience it for yourself. Nautilus has a nice clean pool that was quite refreshing when I'd return from diving with numerous loungers and outside tables where I'd enjoy an ice cold beverage.

I did some touring on land as well. Kosrae is a very pretty island and the people are very friendly and helpful. Nautilus resort can book any tour on the island for you and they have newer and very clean rental cars available which I took advantage of one day to explore the island. I recommend the canoe outrigger tour and there are many others to choose from for those who don't dive or for when you need a day off out of the water.

In summary, I really enjoyed my stay at the Nautilus Resort and mean what I said in my title - I can't wait to go back!

Wonderful place to stay on island with limited choices. Accommodations are spacious and immaculate. Pool is great. Restaurant is fine. Very thoughtful service. Loved out of the way Kosrae and I do not dive! For divers, what are you waiting for? Internet available for modest fee to the provider not the hotel. Best of island style charm.

The hotel sends a shuttle to meet you at the airport. This is a very nice reception because when walking off the plane at the airport, you have no idea whatsoever as to how you will navigate your way to the resort.

Arrival is easy and cheerful with the reception getting you to your room in no time. Rooms are simple and spartan but also spotlessly clean.

Free use of the kayaks for a half day trip out into the lagoon is a must. Be prepared for oppressive heat and intense sun though. You are almost on the equator.

Right across the road is an incredible snorkeling spot. The water can get rather murky on an outgoing tide so plan accordingly.

Food is fish, fish and fish. If you love tuna, you will love Kosrae.

Up front note: The management of the Nautilus changed in December, so more recent information on improvements may well be available by the time you look at reviews.

I came to Kosrae to work for about two months and first settled into the Nautilus. Staff is friendly, the rooms are clean. The restaurant staff is friendly, though service is not at all quick, even when there are few customers. Restaurant selection seemed a bit limited, but their sushi was excellent. The biggest limitation was the lack of in-room Wi-Fi, which needed for work both day, and night. While there was free Wi-Fi in the "lounge", the seats were rather uncomfortable, and there was no air conditioning, so would have to take my computer from room to the "lounge" to work and couldn't retrieve messages on phone in the middle of night, when it was working hours back on the US mainland. Internet seemed unstable, with loss of signal as often as three times an hour. Sometimes had to ask to get towels replaced. There is a nice swimming pool, and there is free use of kayaks. Location is just across the street from the ocean. If Wi-Fi were added to the rooms, and the menu expanded, with larger portions and somewhat lower prices, might consider staying here, and look forward to the new management making the improvements.
Kindly note if you find this review helpful.

Nautilus Resort is a relaxing, no-nonsense place to stay on the remote island of Kosrae. Staff is welcoming, friendly and helpful. Don't expect five star hotel luxury, this is a laid back place with very basic facilities and amenities. It is a perfect homebase for dives, snorkels and visits of the island.

Some tips:

- bring mosquito repellent, especially outside during early morning and evening is when we needed it.

- rent a car from the resort if you'd like to see the island.

- Menke Ruin Hike - beautiful but muddy crossing the rivers so either wear waterproof hiking boots or borrow reef shoes from the resort. The guide, Salick, is great and provides excellent sources of knowledge about the rainforest.

- all staff are amazing , get a chance to know them.

Kosrae has it's own international airport which is just a 17 minute drive from the Resort. The airport code is KSA, I can not put a weblink in here, so please go to the Kosrae Nautilus . com home page, then click on 'About Kosrae', then 'How to get to Kosrae'. There is a lot of flight information there, hope that helps.

Hi Catherine, thanks for your question. We operate the whole year, there is no off season in Kosrae or Micronesia in general. The weather is always warm and the ocean temperature is 28 C (82 F) all year round. Hope that helps, don't hesitate to send us an email if you have any other questions.

Yes, there is a large "blue hole" in the reef flat that is great for snorkeling. It is just a 200 yard walk across the reef flat from the resort. There is no current in there and lots of marine life.
