Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Called in for a drink on the way south to a function. Cool old style pub but the place ABSOLUTELY STUNK of fish. All 17 of us were saying about it. They finally opened a door for some fresh air which helped. Simingly someone had a fish stone grill before us. We all think it needs to be taken off the menu!!

As 5 couples who don't see each other often enough this was the perfect retreat. The rooms are clean and tidy. The evening meal was of good quality and the drinks flowed all day and into the night. Our hosts couldn't do enough for us and I would recommend this lovely hotel to all. Thanks for the great weekend. Mike and Ros

All our family visit the Masonic quite often. Lovely old hotel that was restored with a lot of love. A lovely warm place in Winter. (Great to relax by the wood burner) and a great place for cool drinks in Summer. Good food and good conversation with many laughs. If one enjoy's a good joke then Rhonda (behind the bar) will be only too happy to share one of her many hilarious tales that will put a smile your face. The entertainment can be good at times with a good old sing song. A LOVELY PLACE TO RELAX AND ENJOY:

Friendly, helpful staff, clean and cozy old English feel. We had room in front, view of ocean but traffic noise. The nice pub and game room on site offers pool, darts. They have excellent food at reasonable prices.

No effort spared in restoring this magnificent old hotel to its former glory. Beautifully presented bedrooms & excellent facilities- plenty of room. Exquisite dining room, full menu ( including Stone Grill ), well stocked bar & bottle store. Very homely & host is a great guy!

There is a very nice story behind this hotel, but it does not live up to it. The owners have been and are trying to sell the place with no success and this shows. We had three rooms booked and one was really fine, one was quaint and OK, but the third was subpar, with peeling wallpaper and mold in many places. I suspect that this room is usually not used as I can't imagine the hotel ever to be full. Sadly we did not experience any of the hospitality that the only other review talks about. As the internet only works on the ground floor (all rooms are on the first) and the bar was closed, we were told to sit on the stairs! Also the free internet is slow and bad. The hotel is also extremely noisy, as it is right on highway 1 and the railway tracks are about 50 metres away. So you get large lorries (which seem to ignore the speed limit altogether) and trains waking you up at night regularly, unless you are in dire need of hearing aids. All in all I can't give you a reason to stay here. It is far from everything of note and it is not in any way exceptional or even good.

This iconic Art Deco building has been renovated back to its original splendor. It is breath takingly beautiful. The bar serves thge most amazing meals, with very generous portions. The fire was going when we visited, so was toast warm just like to Host & Hostess. Very freindly went out of there way to make our visit superb. I highly recomend visiting this hotel & get transported back in history, to what kiwi hospitality is really all about.
