Enjoyed our stay, good location with vpcomfy lounge. Chris was exceptional.
Unfortunately the lay out of the room was strange, being on two levels with the toilet on the lower level and the bedroom upstairs. Not good fir guys my age! The room was very hot and a fan was privuded. Knowing the layout now I would ask for a room farthest from the road. As our windows were wide open there was road noise.

Very nice motel which is on two floors with the bedroom upstairs with a lounge and bathroom down stairs. The owner and his dog were very friendly. It also had a communal hot tube. There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance (15min).

We had two very enjoyable nights at Tussock Grove so we could hike in the area around Ohakune. The owners were friendly, welcoming and very helpful. It was a huge help being dropped off at Horopito for the 16km walk back to Ohakune through the Tongariro National Park. The small unit was cosy with a bedroom upstairs and a small living space and bathroom downstairs. A microwave would have been appreciated. The spa across the hall was perfect post-hike or after a day at the skifield. We did not eat at the hotel preferring a short walk into the village and its cafes and restaurants. A great choice.

4 of us arriving and wanting to do the Tongo crossing. On the first night (the night before the crossing), the male manager questioned me not paying back my student loan. Hmmmm, that was freaky, since when my student loan had anything to do with him?

Second day after the crossing, i told the same man that i wasn't enjoyed the crossing as "there was not much to see". After that he suddenly became upset and during the dinner plus the breakfast on the following morning, he gave me the least amount of food. 3 of us had bacon and egg, he gave my wife 3 giant pieces of bacon, but only gave me ONE small piece.

Well, in New Zealand, I do have my rights to say I don't like the crossing, even you are very proud of it. And you revenged me by messing up with my food??

What a great boss.

The hotel itself was very comfortable and clean with good breakfasts - certainly no complaints there. A minibus, arranged by the hotel, took us to the start of the 8 hour walk beginning at 8 a.m. The walk was fairly busy and approximately 20 km. The views were great although to be fair at the start we didn't get the clearest of weather. The problem occurred on the way down on the last 2.5 hour section. Up until that point we were well within the target time to meet up with the arranged return transport pick up at 4 p.m. but then I developed really bad pressure on my toes which were blistered and bleeding and I was in real pain - making this downhill section slow. It became obvious that, although very close to the end of the walk, I was not going to make it at the scheduled pick up time. So my husband went ahead and let the minibus driver know that I was going to be about 10 minutes later than the 4.00pm deadline. The minibus driver said she would not wait that extra 10 minutes but went without me. I hobbled back at at the car park at 4.08p.m. (with another lady also suffering - also from the same bus / hotel). My husband had to go on the minibus without us in order to get back to the hotel and collect our car (appoximately an hour away) and then return to pick up myself and the other lady and her husband who had stayed with us. We waited the 2 hours for my husband to return with the car.
To us, it is unacceptable, that people (I'm 65 this year) are left stranded and in pain in a remote spot, without transport, for the sake of just a 10 minute wait. The driver was told that we were just 10 minutes away. Unfortunately the hotel owner agreed with the minibus driver that she need not have waited for us as they were on tight budgets.
My recommendation is that, go and enjoy the walk, but seek a more responsible driver / hotel that take their duty of care more seriously and ensure that their guests (having walked for 8hrs on a mountain crossing) are returned. All our friends who have done this crossing have been horrified that the driver would not wait 10 minutes and all spoke highly of the extra effort, when needed, that was taken by their transport drivers on their trips.

I have to agree with an earlier reviewer regarding the owners attitude. Was all fine until we decided to check out early - then arrogant and rude. We visited for skiing but conditions were poor ie no snow and also walks were limited due to weather. Place was empty but for one other room. Charged us for two extra nights. No cancellation policy on website but apparently on sign in sheet (although not pointed out).

Beyond being charged for nights not taken - will try and be objective:

Positives: decent location, bed comfortable and rooms warm.

Negatives: Food vastly overpriced. Went to one of the best rated restaurants in Ohakune and was cheaper. Pizza was nice but for 26 dollars way too much, 8 dollars for some salad leaves. Don't do breakfast - far better places in town. Coffee bitter and pancakes with bacon was below average.

Would expect free wi Fi in these times. You have to pay for a hot spot which is limited.

Spa pool is old, luke warm and not inviting.

So combination of service and facilities - would definitely not return.

In response to your comments regarding your visit I would like to clear up a few points. First of all, you made a booking for a six day stay. Therefore, you entered into a contract. On day two you wished to checkout early after maybe doing a guided walk of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This was subject to weather. The Hotel’s Cancellation Policy is very clear and on the Registration Form it states, “Early departure of stay, full cost of stay is charged.” In good faith, instead of charging the full amount for your total stay, I reduced the charge by two nights, i.e. you paid for 4 nights instead of 6. I have checked our Website and when you make a booking on-line the Early Check Out Policy is there. However, due to your comment, I have added it to the front of the Booking Site. Thank you. With regards to skiing and weather, -these are out of my hands. The ski field has been open (beginner’s area,) the whole week and a number of other guests have enjoyed their time up on the snow. As for the weather, -it has improved during the week, with two guests being able to do the Tongariro Crossing as a guided walk. I have to disagree regarding ‘limited walks in the area’ as there are a number of all-weather walks available. As to some of your other points;- our menu prices are based on average prices round town. I was sorry to hear the coffee was ‘bitter.’ Had you advised me at the time, I would have re-made the coffees at no charge. The same applies to the pancakes. As regards Wifi, -we give one hour free per day. In conclusion, the Spa Pool temperature is set at 39C degrees which is the recommended temperature for safety.

Pros: Lovely hosts, good food, cosy lounge and dining area. Comfy bed and clean bathroom.

Cons: Broken window (glass) downstairs, décor

Enjoyed our stay here overall, but our room was a bit tired.
It was an awesome grabone deal though, so well worth the amount paid.

This is some way from what most people would think of as a boutique hotel; much more a cross between a motel and a B & B. Rooms comfortable and well-apportioned. Food really not very good, eat in village (though note limited opportunities and need to book best place). Packages offered not well-organised.

The Motel is in a good location, just a 10 - 15 minute walk into town and numerous restaurants, which we had to do as, although we would have had dinner at the motel, the owner said unfortunately this wouldn't be possible as there was insufficient food available for our (largish) party of 10 and we hadn't pre-warned him we would like to dine in. Fair enough I suppose, but we had checked the dining options on line and there was no mention that we had to pre-book, never mid, we had breakfast there and it was very good. The facilities were really nice and clean, and although it's on a fairly main road there was little traffic to keep us awake, I slept like a log. and I'm a light sleeper. We had a mixture of "executive Queen" and "mezzanine Queen" and there didn't appear to be hardly any difference, certainly not enough to justify the extra price so the mezzanine Queen would be a choice in any future stay. We loved the dog too

This is a good place to stay overall. However it's getting rundown and in need of maintenance and upgrading. For example the spa pool bubbles don't work, a bit on the cold side and the clearlight roof is growing moss. All not biggies but a spa pool needs to be scrupulously clean and functioning well with multiple people using it..... or its a recipie for spending nasties.
Otherwise I'm happy to recommend it.
