This was a good location for touring the Ohakune area on the road that leads to several hiking areas. It has two restaurants on site but only one was open during our time there. It served mostly pub food but the food and service were good. The front desk clerks were very helpful with suggestions and directions. It does have a small elevator and also a ramp off the restaurant that can lead to the lobby. The rooms were not all as spacious as pictured but were adequate and well appointed. Our room had a small balcony. Be warned that there are trains that run throughout the night very close to the hotel so if you are a light sleeper, earplugs might be useful. There is a guest laundry for a $10 fee per load including the washer and dryer which was easy to use- tokens are given at the front desk along with a packet of soap. As we were checking out, the clerk told us that was where the cast of Lord of the Rings stayed while in the area and she showed us the book where cast members had signed. Since the restaurant was not open for breakfast, there was a choice of either a cooked breakfast or a continental breakfast available for order with an additional charge that would be delivered to the room.

This is a cozy little lodge type hotel that seems really appropriate for a winter stay. After much hype regarding LOTR, we stayed in their separate little “chalet“ Peter Jackson used while he was filming in the area. It’s just a nice little cottage next to the lodge. Very quiet, maybe getting a little rundown. Furniture is a bit worn, and the ceiling has a lot of atmospheric spiderwebs. For a family, however, it was a nice deal to keep us all together, and we enjoyed the fireplace and the washing machine quite a bit. The main detractor for us was that as a summer place, Okahune really dies down, so the Powderkeg is THE place to eat (fine. The Lodge breakfast was fair). Great park access, but perhaps not necessary to have quite that close of access when there is little traffic anyway. Could be nicer if you’ll be visiting multiple days, just bring in your own food to cook in the cottage.

This stay was part of a mid-winter road trip. Our room was on the top floor and was very well heated and comfortable. The bathroom amenities provided were very nice. Breakfast was included in our stay, which made it a really great deal, as we could choose anything off the menu, plus a coffee. We also ate dinner in the restaurant, and the food was well priced and tasty. The only complaint was that the restaurant was a little cool, as there were relatively few people dining.
The big surprise was the wonderful indoor heated pool, with its wooden surroundings and dim lighting. A great relaxing place to finish off the evening before going to bed - and we had it to ourselves! Bonus.

Excellent staff that worked hard and good food but… if you are unfortunate enough to have a room on the 2nd floor, be prepared for hearing a lot of noise from above, including all of the activities in the toilet! It is simply not nice to lie there, in bed at night and at 05:45 listening to these activities followed by very loud (measured 63db) water flowing and footsteps clunking across the ceiling. You can get earplugs from reception but they’re for swimming. Such a shame and not the fault of the staff!

We stayed for two night at the Powderhorn Chateau. This hotel is exactly how I imagine a ski chalet in France to be.

Our room was really well heated and we appreciated the drying cupboard in our bathroom. The bathroom was a bit dated, but clean and warm. I noticed new bathrooms were being installed in nearby rooms and they look really nice.

Service was good friendly kiwi hospitality. The lovely surprise was the indoor pool - heated like a spa but the size of a swimming pool. Very nice!

Was recommended by our motel host to eat at the Powderhorn Chateau restaurant and bar and we were very unhappy with both their offerings and prices that were unreasonably expensive for what they provided. I ordered the fish of the day as my mains and was presented with a small portion of salmon only on a scant purée and very small garnish of 1 tiny tomato cut in half with a few small other pieces. This they charged NZ$38 and was barely large enough for an entree - the couple next to us were shocked by the meagre offering. My friends and wife were also shocked. My friend also ordered a hamburger for $NZ30 that was advertised in the menu to come with beetroot, which precisely the reason she ordered it - the burger had absolutely no beetroot on it.

Had an amazing visit here for a couple of days with my partner. Our room was a very large spacious & clean room with a solid deck and a really nice bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the room just had that overall cozy vibe you want from a ski chalet.

We go B&B and the breakfast was honestly amazing! I had the smoked salmon breakfast (little salty but I like that) and the 'something light' breakfast on different mornings and they were both incredible. The service was super friendly and the staff really seemed to enjoy themselves.

With COVID restrictions in place there were limitations to the number of people in the bar/ restaurant but the staff were great at organising this and it didn't feel like anyone was ever on top of each other or rushed to get the next people in. Plus everything was super clean!

All & All a solid trip.

we stayed at the Powderhorn as part of a LOTR tour - a number of the stars and crew stayed there during the filming - but would highly recommend the hotel regardless of a star – started past. The rooms were lovely, the restaurants quite good and the indoor heated swimming pool just what is needed after a full day of touring. It has a more rustic feel, with the use of lots of wood and combines for a welcoming warm place to stay. We were told it was full and lively during the winter ski season but it is a perfect place to stay over the summer.

Booked through Luxury Escapes, absolutely no problems with the booking which came with some nice bonuses.

Clean and tidy.
Breakfast included - la carte . Food is very good.

Rooms are quite cold, however heat pump soon warms them up.

Convenient to Tongariro Crossing shuttles.

Yes, and now it is included in your lift pass if you have pre book a day pass or already have a season pass. The bus stops right outside the door.

Yes, upon check-in we were offered a shuttle service to the tramping start and end points, which looked as a good option although we did not use it (used out car instead).

Trails are practical on the door step , a wee distance to the ski fields but November no snow, the powder horn is the perfect place to use as a headquarters.
