Great hosts. Go above and beyond the call of duty, including dropping us at the wedding so we didn’t have to walk and taking pre wedding pics for us ! Also the dog is super cute. The rooms are super tidy. The breakfast was delish.

Really great place to stay and relax. The house is really big and well decorated, the rooms are spacious. The owners are very friendly - they help us book the transport for Tongariro crossing. One night we order a dinner and it was really delicous and healthy. Everything home made.
Next to the house there is a small deer farm. During our stay we feed the small Bambi!!! Really great experience!

Host Peter was very helpful and nice. Our apartment has most of the things that we need - a nice coffee machine, egg steamer, clean water kettle, even a fridge full of wine (for sale). The decore is very cozy too.
Location wise yes you'll need your own car but it's good that it's not in the centre of the town - hence it's always quiet. Oh and have I mentioned about the split system air con (hot and cold) plus heaters that kept us warm ?

We decided to stay here as a getaway together from the big city. We had spent the day at the snow and arrived to be shown around this tidy B&B. It had a gorgeous little deer farm and we were pleased with the furnishings and our own private en suite.
However, we found the hosts unusually rude and overall we felt we were extremely unwelcome. After arriving home from an early dinner we decided to watch some TV quietly in the shared guest lounge before getting an early night. We turned the heat pump on to 25 degrees because we were cold. Shortly after the host stormed in and growled us, saying that this was completely unnecessary and using up all their power. Her manner made us feel like we were kids on school camp who had been naughty. She then cooled the room back down to 18 degrees!!! Not only did we feel embarrassed by this, we felt completely shocked that we were paying $200/night to be told off for using the heating system!!
We ended up having to go back and ask for another source of heating because it was freezing. We aren't particularly fussy about these things and wouldn't have minded even being given some blankets or something to warm up - we just couldn't believe the way the host handled it. She didn't seem open to reason to the fact that we were feeling cold. We felt stupid for asking. We were made to feel like we were a nuisance, unwelcome, and intruding on her house. Needless to say we felt like we were watching our backs all night - like she might come back and unreasonably scold us again. We left first thing in the morning.
We were also disappointed with the breakfast. Despite informing the host on the booking form that one of us had coeliac disease, there were no gluten free options other than fruit that had mould on it. It wouldn't have hurt to have provided a bit of gluten free bread for toast! We left without eating.
For $200 a night, we felt really ripped off. We did not feel comfortable here and wished we had either just driven home, or spent our money on the Powderhorn which was just $20 more.
We won't be recommending Cairnbrae House or coming back.

We booked the deluxe double room with bath (advertised as private bathroom). It turned out that the 'private bathroom' did not open into our room but was only accessible by going through a communal area. We were told that eftpos would be fine, but there was no eftpos facility, appeared only payment method was to read out all credit card details while host entered them into his cellphone. When eftpos did not work we asked if they could just charge the credit card we used to book (we did not have a credit card with us). The host then said this would not work as the 'system was down' and asked that we text all credit card details to him so he could enter them into the payment app he had. At this point we felt thoroughly uncomfortable and not wanting to put credit card details in text message, ended up leaving to drive 3.5 hours back to Wellington rather than stay. On later investigation it does say in the booking email that credit cards are the payment method. Partly our fault for not reading this thoroughly, however we did feel that the payment process was very unprofessional and the room was not as advertised and definitely not worth what we were being asked to pay. I wouldn't recommend this as a couples destination, but was clean and tidy and in a great location.

You'll be greeted by Campbell the Labrador, one of the farmstead pets, and Devon and Peter - all very friendly! The guest lounge was huge and we had it to ourselves. Our own super-king room had the most enormous bed with ultra soft bedding - difficult to get out of in the morning. From the windows you could see the deer roaming the paddock and that night we had a wonderful romantic meal of venison with a bottle of Peter's best red. Breakfast was excellent too in the family kitchen. The only thing we missed was the view of the volcano - the not-so-friendly neighbour has let his conifers go wild, but drive 50 yards down the lane and it's there in all it's splendour.

Take the Mackay's recommendation of a trip on the Whanganui from Pipiriki with Ken

This accommodation is in a house on a lifestyle-size block in a rural location about 10 minutes from Ohakune, a small town with a suprisingly excellent selection of eating establishments. Our room was very nice, maybe a bit on the small side, but there was a very large shared lounge area right outside the room to our door, with some couches, books, games, microwave, coffee maker, TV, etc.

Our hosts were very warm and friendly and Peter was especially helpful in planning our day trips to Ruapehu, taking into account the weather conditions. Breakfast was very good and dinner was available on request, although we chose to eat out.

We booked our stay in Cairnbrae House as it looked lovely and in such an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Tongiriro National Park.

The accomodation was just outside Ohakune and sat amongst stunning grounds with a view of Mt Ruapehu. Our room was a lovely light room with private balcony and we had access to a guest only lounge with email, Tea & Coffee making facilities, Mini bar & sky TV. The only thing with the room was that I thought it was a bit dusty. I assumed at the time that maybe there hadn't been guests in there for a while but it could have done with a once over. Other than that it was comfortable, especially the bed which was fab. I spread right out and still couldn't touch my husband on the other side. It was huge.

The hosts were welcoming and were able to recommend a lovely restaurant where the Lord of the Rings cast and crew used to eat in- the Powderhorn. Chateau.

The one thing however that we didn't like was as soon as we arrived we were asked when we were planning to leave the next morning. The reason being was it was the hosts' daughters wedding the next day in Auckland and they had to leave in the monring to get there. We then felt pressured to leave sooner than we had intended. We felt this was wrong as we had paid good money and had planned to have a leisurely breakfast and maybe a wonder around the grounds. They should have warned us beforehand out of courtesy- it would have only been fair of them to do so. We certainly felt ambushed.

The breakfast was nice, the setting and views were stunning, as was the local area, the room pleasant and comfortable but its unfortunate that we felt obligated to get out as they had somewhere to get to.

I am going to recommend this place as the only other option would be no and I am certain if it wasn't for the fact that they had to get guests out in order to leave for the wedding, the stay would have been lovely. I'm sure other travellers will enjoy the setting and the area as much as we did. Cairnbrae House is perfectly situated to explore it all.

My husband and I recently returned from a trip to New Zealand which focused on the National Parks, as we love to hike. If you wish to spend some time in Tongariro National Park (which is absolutely beautiful, ranging from snow-covered peaks to rain forests) you will find lodging is very limited (and pricey) within the park. I would like to suggest you consider staying at the Cainbrae House B&B in nearby Ohakune. We absolutely loved the place. They have 3 lovely guest rooms, and ours had a private bath and fabulous views of the nearby mountain. Prices are reasonable and the hosts are gracious and have lots of suggestions for hiking, etc.
