Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I normally come here when I am looking for fairly cheap accommodation when going to Mt Ruapehu. I usually book online so I get an idea of real time room availability. They also do it by the bed. There are a few different areas here which are different prices. You have options of private or shared rooms/bathrooms, as well as options of family rooms or bunk beds. The prices do include linen and towels. They also have amenities such as a drying room, laundry room and bike storage shed. It is located in the main Ohakune area so it is within walking distance to the restaurants and the New World nearby. They also have a spa as well as a cafe on site. I normally arrive late at night and usually don't have issues getting into the room after arriving. It is quite a nice place to sleep if you're able to get a booking.

My husband and I stayed on a two night package which included a private room with ensuite, cooked breakfasts, Old Coach Road Trail transfers to Horopito and use of the spa pools. Due to urgent surgery and an eight week recovery recovery, we had to postpone our break away for two months and Steve was understanding and helpful when I contacted him and was happy to extend the deal until my husband had recovered. Our room was cosy, clean and comfortable and there was a clear view of Mount Ruapehu from the deck - we sat and watched the sunset and the colours reflected on the snowy mountain - it was magic. The breakfasts were made while we waited and delivered to our table hot and fresh. The staff were helpful and happy to go the extra mile. The lock up storage facility for our bikes was an added bonus and everything was in walking or biking distance so we didn't need to use the car. All in all this is a great place to stay with friendly and helpful staff.

Even though the weather wasn’t playing ball with the Tongariro crossing so we weren’t able to complete it, the service, food and kindness displayed was superb. They pulled out the stops to ensure our stay was great. Breakfasts in particular were amazing value and selection. Will stay again! Thank you Steve and team!

We stayed on Waitangi weekend, was fairly quiet due to Covid. We booked direct and had a family room. Very clean, the hostel has everything you need. Steve was very welcoming. Would definitely stay again.

Perfectly positioned for easy walking into town, or a speedy car ride up the road to the mountain, this is a great hostel to stay in. I was in one of the upgrade type rooms in the main building and found it to be very clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful also. Didn’t get to try it but I noticed that there is hot tub spa which would be super handy after a day on the slopes or walk my trails.

Can not fault a single thing with this hostel. We stayed for 2 nights in the one of their lodges and we thought it was great. Very clean, great facilities, and close to all the restaurants and supermarket. View of the mountain was amazing.

The location of the backpackers is quite good, very close to the main street in Ohakune with the New World within walking distance. We stayed in the family room for 6 people. It was easy booking online and kept in touch with them through email before arriving as we might've arrived when they were closed. We were in the Maitai Lodge around the back and parking was a bit tight so we ended up parking on the road. The room itself was quite nice. Bed were clean and comfy, as were the bathrooms. The lodge had a TV and shared lounge areas on both floors but only the ground floor had a kitchen. The place was well maintained and enjoyable to stay in. They also had a drying room for the wet gear. There is a small sign in the building across the lodge for this room. The boots on the shelves didn't dry as well as the jackets but that was probably due to proximity to the heater. This place is quite a nice place to stay and is very affordable. Great location and facilities.

We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms with ensuite. Clean, warm and comfortable bed !! We also used the cafe downstairs for breakfast - very delicious cooked breakfast and well priced. Didn't use the spa of sauna but was nice to know it was there. Staff were helpful and friendly
