My husband and I stayed on a two night package which included a private room with ensuite, cooked breakfasts, Old Coach Road Trail transfers to Horopito and use of the spa pools.
Due to urgent surgery and an eight week recovery recovery, we had to postpone our break away for two months and Steve was understanding and helpful when I contacted him and was happy to extend the deal until my husband had recovered.
Our room was cosy, clean and comfortable and there was a clear view of Mount Ruapehu from the deck - we sat and watched the sunset and the colours reflected on the snowy mountain - it was magic.
The breakfasts were made while we waited and delivered to our table hot and fresh. The staff were helpful and happy to go the extra mile.
The lock up storage facility for our bikes was an added bonus and everything was in walking or biking distance so we didn't need to use the car.
All in all this is a great place to stay with friendly and helpful staff.

We have stayed at the Matai Lodge (red building) in LKNZ Ohakune with our church friends for 1 night and was not disappointed at all, in fact, very happy with the accomodation.

I was kind of hesitant at first as there were not much reviews on the specific building we will be occupying. However, from booking to check in and check out, it was all a very lovely experience.

Steve responded to us quickly on our web inquiry and with all the information given to him he gave us a very good offer. We are a group of 21 adults and 12 children ranging from 2-14 years old. At first we thought that was a very good deal almost too good to be true as we will be occupying 1 building to ourselves with complete amenities such as a spacious kitchen, lounge, bedrooms with a 45 person capacity and a bonus pool table.

I have seen some comments on the previous years that it was not clean and beds has bedbugs and building is old. We would agree that the building is not new but definitely clean enough and no bed bugs at all.

We brought pillows and blankets with us just in case there's not enough or we might be surprised with unclean sheets but we never used them at all as everything is clean.

Kitchen has more than enough cooking equipments, we didn't use the plates and cutleries as we brought our own disposables since we're a huge group but there should be enough for a group as well. Fridge and freezer has a lot of space more than enough for our overnight trip. Dining area has enough tables and chairs.

The building has good heating facilities as well. We even needed to turn it off at some point as it's getting too hot for us.

Mark on the reception who helped us check in was very helpful as well. He explained everything clearly and have shown areas to park which was another plus as I saw some reviews that there's not enough parking but that was not quite right because we were able to park all 9 cars within the vicinity of LKNZ. He was also very nice and cheerful. The lady who I forgot to ask her name :( upon checkout was also nice.

Lounge has a nice size of tele and a lot of blueray selections we didn't use it a lot as we enjoyed each other's company overnight on the dining area which has a large space as well.

Bathrooms and toilet are all clean with hand soaps and enough tissue paper. Not a new shower/toilet facilities but clean and with hot water is all we would need anyway.

So yes overall we are all very satisfied and would definitely come back and recommend to friends.

I thought I'd put in a very specific review to help fellow travellers and put in a good word for the lodge as we were very happy with our trip. We also made sure we left the facility clean as a courtesy.

Let me know if you need me to share this review elsewhere. (Bookabach, airbnb etc.) I'd be happy to do so if I can (no system restrictions). :)

The location of the backpackers is quite good, very close to the main street in Ohakune with the New World within walking distance. We stayed in the family room for 6 people. It was easy booking online and kept in touch with them through email before arriving as we might've arrived when they were closed. We were in the Maitai Lodge around the back and parking was a bit tight so we ended up parking on the road.
The room itself was quite nice. Bed were clean and comfy, as were the bathrooms. The lodge had a TV and shared lounge areas on both floors but only the ground floor had a kitchen. The place was well maintained and enjoyable to stay in. They also had a drying room for the wet gear. There is a small sign in the building across the lodge for this room. The boots on the shelves didn't dry as well as the jackets but that was probably due to proximity to the heater.
This place is quite a nice place to stay and is very affordable. Great location and facilities.

We booked ahead of time and check-in was effortless. Free parking was nearish to our room off a gravel parking lot and down a half-flight of outdoor steps. The room itself had a bunk and was a little worn, but the wifi was good and bedding clean. Single bunks were comfortable, lots of in room shelving for luggage and personal items. The porch walk outside the bedroom door can be noisy but there weren't many guests at the time we visited (Boxing Day). Bathrooms and showers are separate, private and accessible only from outdoors by key. Same with the kitchen, which was well supplied with pots, dishware and cutlery. We were only in the area for one night and it met our needs, but for a longer stay in colder weather, having to go outdoors to access the kitchen, showers and bathroom might be a deal breaker. On the plus side, a good price.

Hi Susan, Thanks for taking the time to give us a review! I just wanted to clarify do you stayed in our Budget Area, the cheapest one of our 3 different tiers, and probably the cheapest in the whole town. It is ideal for tight budget travelers, and it has everything you need, as you said. That area is not available during winter, so rest assured that none of our guests will be cold this winter, the other 2 tiers are centrally heated and the temperature can be adjusted individually, plus the bathrooms are located inside the lodges or in your room, depending on your preference. Have a great trip,

We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms with ensuite. Clean, warm and comfortable bed !! We also used the cafe downstairs for breakfast - very delicious cooked breakfast and well priced. Didn't use the spa of sauna but was nice to know it was there. Staff were helpful and friendly

I normally come here when I am looking for fairly cheap accommodation when going to Mt Ruapehu. I usually book online so I get an idea of real time room availability. They also do it by the bed.
There are a few different areas here which are different prices. You have options of private or shared rooms/bathrooms, as well as options of family rooms or bunk beds. The prices do include linen and towels. They also have amenities such as a drying room, laundry room and bike storage shed.
It is located in the main Ohakune area so it is within walking distance to the restaurants and the New World nearby. They also have a spa as well as a cafe on site.
I normally arrive late at night and usually don't have issues getting into the room after arriving. It is quite a nice place to sleep if you're able to get a booking.

Only downside was the room smelt of damp, apart from that nice beds, good kitchen and comfortable lounge area, OK toilets and showers. Nice cafe on site as well 2 hot tubs. Also on site laundry, which was useful. We used this hostel as a base for the Tongaririo Alpine Crossing, with a shuttle bus taking us to the start of thee track and picking us back up at the end of the trek, the hot tubs were great after the trek! The hostel is however a bit of a walk from the train station if you have bags like we did - arriving and departing on the Northern Explorer train.

Perfectly positioned for easy walking into town, or a speedy car ride up the road to the mountain, this is a great hostel to stay in. I was in one of the upgrade type rooms in the main building and found it to be very clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful also. Didn’t get to try it but I noticed that there is hot tub spa which would be super handy after a day on the slopes or walk my trails.

Even though the weather wasn’t playing ball with the Tongariro crossing so we weren’t able to complete it, the service, food and kindness displayed was superb. They pulled out the stops to ensure our stay was great. Breakfasts in particular were amazing value and selection. Will stay again! Thank you Steve and team!
