Had the best time at Are-a-Matatui! From the moment we were greeted at the airport by the friendly caretaker Lawton. He was so helpful, organising us a rental car and giving us lots of tips of things to do on the island. The house was right on the beach, surrounded by tropical coconut trees and hibiscus plants. We loved swimming in the lagoon and using the kayaks to paddle out to the wave break. We enjoyed sitting out on the big deck playing cards until the early hours of the morning :) Thanks for letting us enjoy your beautiful home.

This beachside house was perfect for our 5 day stay. Such a relaxing place to just chill out, enjoy the beach and everything that the island has to offer. We were greeted at the airport by Lawton who gave us the most beautiful flowers to put around our necks. He was a fabulous caretaker and looked after us really well. It was raining hard when we arrived but he found us the last rental car on the island. There are a lot of missies but I didn’t get bitten once. See the photo for the repellant I used. (Advised by Auckland travel clinic) The single beds were extremely comfortable and I don’t think I’ve slept better for so long. The kitchen was well equipped and there was even food left in the fridge for us from the last renters. There’s not a huge abundance of fresh meat on the island so I would advise anyone to bring as much food as they can from Rarotonga unless they want to eat out. We chose to eat out anyway every night and found some great restaurants on the island. For coffee we went to Koru cafe. Cocktails at the Blue lagoon resort overlooking the most amazing lagoon where we really enjoyed swimming. Thursday night we went to Island night at a nearby hotel (need to book) and watched and participated in the most amazing dancing and fire show. $70 pp well spent including a great buffet dinner. Best massages were had at the Pacific resort. $130 for 50 mins sounds a lot but they were so good. Best lunchtimes stop was the blue shack where we were treated to lovely toasted wraps with fish. Great walking just behind the house across the road up to the peak with lovely views. Then if you feel like a further 45 minute walk you can carry on over to the other side of the island then walk back along the road. Best lagoon cruise we did was the Vaka cruise. Probably also the best meal we had was on the boat and really well entertained by Ali and his fellow crew. Three of them play the ukulele and the skipper played the drum. The skipper was also the star of the fire show at the hotel I mentioned earlier. I can’t say that the coral snorkelling was the best I have ever seen as a lot of it was quite white but it was so enjoyable to swim in that amazing turquoise water and have these enormous big black fish swimming so close to us. On our last night we were treated to a great rugby match between the Raro team and the team from Aitutaki. Apparently rugby matches are the norm on Friday nights. Really friendly atmosphere with children swimming behind and other kids playing handball. It seems like the whole town had turned up to watch the match. There are about 1500 people living on this island and they are all so friendly. We also had three nights on Raro but I much preferred our time on the island. Thank you Frances for letting us stay at your beautiful home.

Place is amazing! Right on the beach, clear water, beautiful beach... House is huge and has perfect veranda with a sea view. Kitchen has everything: coffee machine, toaster, oven... Rooms are big, there are two bathrooms, huge living room and dining room. You can use kayaks for free. There is a lot of corals just 5 meters from the beach. Next door is restaurant (I forgot the name), they have totally fresh fish (you see them fishing in the morning) - best fish and chips. Totally worth it. Best price/ performance.

We are a family group of 4 adults and this was one of the few places that could accomodate us all comfortably - the king size beds separate to 4 singles. Perfect! The setting is also perfect. We had the garden unit, a little back from the beach but really almost beachfront like the others. We loved kayaking in the lagoon and watching the sunset while sitting under the palms. The unit was beautifully presented and had everything we needed, though we have to admit we didn't do much cooking. Lawton was most helpful, from meeting us at the airport and taking us to organise scooters and do our shopping, to giving advice on places to eat and things to see and do. A perfect place to relax and unwind. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Are-a-Matatui is the most perfect and beautiful place we have ever stayed. We stayed for 5 nights and didn't want to leave! We were welcomed by the house keeper at the airport who looked after everything during the week including advice on lagoon tours, where to eat, what to do - he was so helpful and lovely. The house was absolutely perfect, everything was clean, tidy and homely and had everything we needed for our stay. The accommodation is right on the beach with perfect swimming spots and the most beautiful sunsets in the afternoon. There are even kayaks, beach chairs and a BBQ if you want to cook for yourself! Thanks so much for having us and we can't wait to come back!!

My 2 friends and I felt like we arrived in paradise from the moment we set foot on Aitutaki. Being welcomed by the housekeeper and conveniently transferred from the airport to the beach villa allowed us to instantly dive into the laid-back and relaxed tropical island lifestyle. The villa is surrounded by a lush, well kept garden of which we were offered freshly picked fruit such as pawpaw, bananas and coconuts every day. Our housekeeper was even that kind to shred some fresh coconut meat for us and we were able to prepare our own coconut milk which resulted in the best tuna fish curry I have ever tasted in my life. We were positively surprised how well equipped and beautifully decorated the villa was. We could cook all our meals without problems and if we needed something extra or had a question the housekeeper was always there to help us out. We spent our days exploring the island on our scooters, climbing the hills for spectacular views over the lagoon, taking a transfer to Honeymoon island for some great snorkelling and swimming in the crystal clear turquoise waters (also a fantastic kite surfing spot), walking along our 'home' beach during breathtaking sunsets and playing card games on the spacious veranda overlooking the garden. The 5 days passed too quickly and we could have stayed longer. Hopefully we can return soon enough to endulge ourselves once more in the Aitutaki island vibe and become one with the sea and nature of this little jewel in the South Pacific and leave all the stress and unnecessary schedules of our busy city lifes behind us. A couple of things to be aware of and ensure to prepare before or right at the start of the stay at Are-a-Matatui: - as there was limited WiFi in the villa as well as very few cafes that offer WiFi and most of the time only poor connection we got ourselves a tourist/visitor Bluesky SIM when we arrived on Rarotonga which gave us enough data for a 10day stay on the Cook Islands and made it easy to look up restaurants and things to do on Aitutaki - plan your shopping ahead: all shops are closed on a Sunday as well as many restaurants. Hence maybe already bring some food from Rarotonga if arriving on a Sunday. Again the housekeeper was very helpful with restaurant recommendations and there is also a list of restaurants in the house manual - get mobile by renting a scooter or a car. We rented scooters and it was the best to explore the island with a constant breeze in ours hair and also fairly prized. If arranged beforehand the scooters are even delivered to the villas.

We spent 8 days here with our 5-year old son and left this little paradise relaxed as never before! This was our first visit to Cook islands and we could not think of a better place to stay – the villas are perfectly situated in a lush garden, just a couple of metres from a nice and peaceful sandy beach. There are lots of younger coconut trees in the front row at the beach so you can take advantage of their shade if you want to hide from the hot sun. We were happy to take the kayaks and saw lots of fish closer to the reef, enjoyed our morning coffees at the beach and finished the day with a cold beer watching stunning sunsets. The villa itself was extraordinary spacious, with 2 bathrooms, good equipped kitchen and a wonderful big wooden patio – just perfect for self-catering. Loved the furniture style and other decoration! There are a couple of restaurants reachable on foot, but it still makes sense to rent a car/scooter or bicycles and go explore some other parts of the island. Make sure you take the short hike up to Aitutaki´s highest peak, Maunga Pu, which starts conveniently just a little further down the road from where the villas are. A lagoon cruise is a must! We got picked up and dropped off at the airport and felt very welcomed and taken care of the whole time of our stay thanks to the lovely manager who was also happy to organise the lagoon trip for us and took us to a local store the first day to buy some groceries. Are-a-Matatui is a great choice if you enjoy a big portion of peace and quiet in a wonderful environment, after spending your day actively around the island, or just relaxing on the beach in front of the villas. Looking forward to visit again someday!

We enjoyed the peace and quiet staying here which we struggled to find when we stay in a hotel. The place was nice and clean and loved the front porch and lazing on the beach reading our books. Mama was very helpful and friendly. She evened booked out snorkelling trip which we would highly recommend! We hope we can return soon!

We stayed mid year and I have only just got around to reviewing. Was most disappointing Paid between $400-500NZD per night and expected a higher level of service, we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Finding food to cook in the kitchen was difficult, and eating out difficult too as far from everything -taxi's and rentals very expensive. We had to ask for it to be cleaned It was also winter and very hot...and no aircon! Thankfully we are Aussies and accustomed to the heat but many travellers would find it uncomfortable I think. Overall the decor is quite nice other than the mouldy ceiling, and porch overlooking the ocean was well used Be careful of Mosquitos as they often carry the zika or chickengunya virus which is pretty nasty We much preferred Rarotonga to Aitutaki! Aitutaki was very overpriced we thought but the Islands trip is a must!! You can do a day trip from Raro though, still works out better value!!!

Response from Matatui, Owner at Are-a-Matatui
Responded 9 Jan 2016
I am sorry that you did not have an enjoyable stay in Aitutaki and I was very disappointed to read some of your comments. The villas are self-catering and are not within a large resort. Food is not provided and has never been advertised as such. There are many, well stocked shops on this tiny island. There are a number of very good restaurants and indeed, there is one right next door and another one within easy walking distance. We do however recommend that guests hire a car, a motorised scooter or bicycles (all of which can be delivered to your villa) for ease of transport to restaurants and for seeing the sights on the island. The villas have been very carefully designed to allow natural air flow from ocean breezes and there are very high ceilings and ceiling fans in every room. Our website does not state that air conditioning is provided. The villas have fly screen protection from mosquitoes on all windows and, as you note, a lovely, very large balcony overlooking the lagoon. It was unfortunate that there was evidence of a spot of dampness on the kitchen ceiling during your stay. Following a storm, a small leak in the roof resulted in a stain on the ceiling which awaited tradesmen for repairs. This job has been done and both villas have recently been painted inside and outside. We have spoken with our agent in the Cook Islands and are assured that our villas are appropriately priced. There are very few well-appointed, modern and spacious two-bedroom houses on Aitutaki and our villas are advertised in the self-catering category which greatly appeals to many of our guests, especially families who have returned year after year. According to Wikipedia, “Aitutaki is famous for its turquoise central lagoon, uninhabited islands and palm-fringed beaches. Another advantage is that until now it has been spared by mass tourism.” Lonely Planet adds that “Aitutaki’s stunning lagoon, brimming with marine life and ringed by 15 palm-covered motu, is one of the treasures of the South Pacific.” Furthermore, Aitutaki has “one of the world's most fantastic lagoons, a highlight of any visit to the Cook Islands, and undoubtedly one of the most memorable sights in the South Pacific.” It is a pity that you did not enjoy your experience at our villa on this lovely tropical island. The remote, quiet and unspoiled natural beauty of Aitutaki is what most guests adore.

Our family of 4 (kids 10 and 8) stayed on stunning Aitutaki for 5 nights and we loved Are-a-Matatui. Our 2-bed, 2-bath beach villa was absolutely beautiful and very clean and comfortable. Mama, looks after this property plus next-door Are-a-tai and she is the sweetest lady-- every day asking us if we wanted fresh fruit. The villa has access to several kayaks which we used once-- the only time you can go out is around high tide. The villa has ceiling fans but no air on but thus wasn't a problem for us. The windows are screened but you still get the occasional bugs-- I think this is just part of island life. The 2nd bedroom can be made up as a king or 2 single beds which worked great for us. There is also a washing machine which was so helpful. The layout of the villa is really well thought-out. The location was great for us-- 10 minutes from the airport and about 15 from the main town. We rented a car from Rino's rentals and having our own transport was important to get to restaurants, etc. There are a few resorts on the island and you can go there for meals, island nights, etc. We preferred the space and peacefulness of having our own villa-- it really felt like our own idyllic island hideaway.
