stop blaming the attitude of the managers. it's true, they are not friendly. but it is the only camping on the island, you can find gardens to set up your tent in local houses on airbnb... but for the cheap price, who cares about the smile or not of the managers? you will see them 5mn when you arrive and when you leave. they don't bother.
otherwise..... the location is perfect. the field is clean, the equipments are great, bathrooms are clean, and it is quiet. the access to the beach is a must, and watching the sunset from the camping is also a must

I stayed here in 2012, had a good experience, so I returned in 2013. What a bad idea!
Same owners, and upon my arrival, I was told my reservation was non-existent. Thank goodness I had my email confirmation with me. After a bit of an argument, they conceded and offered me a room that would not accommodate my needs...hmmm...
Eventually, I did get a room that met my needs but the owners tried to swindle an extra $15 a night, per person from me,(a total of $90) claiming they had raised the prices some time ago. Again, thankfully, I had my emails, dated with the REAL price. Sadly, they were reluctant AND grouchy to honor their quote. But it gets worse.
The communal kitchen was taken over by skinny, starving cats. Cats I found walking all over the kitchen counters; I even witnessed one cat steal the food off another camper's plate. In addition to the cats, there were chickens all over the kitchen as well. I saw them resting on tabletops, and crapping all over the place. During the three nights we stayed, someone came in to clean the cat and chicken messes only once; the first day. I know this because the same pile of chicken poop remained in its spot until my last night. Who knows, it might still be there.
I will not be going back. They are not friendly, dishonest, and their place has become filthy!

Overall, I'd say this is a good and affordable option for young travellers. Pretty beach right by the property and a short walk from a market, roulette's and a few hotels that you can take whale watching tours form and rent kayaks/paddle boards. The owners were a little strange and won't help you out with anything other than checking you in, but they were pretty chill when I lost the key to my room. My only real issue was that I was a single female traveling alone and their son, who is 34 or thereabouts, was ALWAYS wasted in the evenings. My first impression of this pension was walking to the beach and having him and causin start cat calling me. Later that night, he went looking for me and found me in my room, in my pajamas and asked me to come drink rum with him and wouldn't leave until I promised to come find him later (which was a lie obviously ). I don't think I need to explain why this was inappropriate. This happened again during my stay. Also, one night he played music super loud until 4 in the morning and there were families with little kids and babies camping and staying in the rooms. Also totally inappropriate. He's a nice enough guy but just way too over the top and inappropriate when he's wasted, which is every evening during the week and ALL weekend long, no exaggeration. Anyway, the other people staying there were awesome. The daughter of the owners was really nice, just the son gettin wasted and coming to my room in the night was an issue for me.

Perfect camping with share kitchen and facilities, nice shops around and perfect beach. Is what you are looking for. Unfortunately there is no dormitory so the only cheap way is by tend. They should do it.
Friendliness of the staff isn’t the higher but it looks like this is common in Polynasia. Probably because is low season.

Camping Nelson has a TON of potential, but the owners leave a lot to be desired. Very uncommunicative, and have a very wierd way of running things.

Although it is one of the cheapest options on Moorea, they have bumped their prices from their website so double check this when booking.

They have kitchen facilities but can only be used at certain times, and no really good storage for food (they are using one deep freeze as a fridge when we stayed). The owners are extreme about keeping the place clean which can be a good thing, but not when you have left a bit of stuff (I'm talking some coconut shavings here) on the floor, and their cleaner refuses to sweep itup although they pay her to do just that every day...

Also, a BIG THING is that they do NOT provide camping gear! we were lucky and had our own, but if you don't you'll be paying a lot more to stay in a room. and if you are camping, be prepared to be awake all night due to all of the cats and roosters running around!!!

One more negative is the internet, they promote free wifi, but ONLY in the kitchen, and only for a couple of hours each day, because they seem to be too cheap to pay for it at their house and at hostel. There are also no other social areas, so its a quite "keep to yourself" place.

On the positive side of things, the location is great, close to snorkeling/diving and a grocery store, and the beach is quite nice.

It is cheap and offers Free WiFi. , and that is about it. The owners are some of the most unfriendly people I have met on my long trip. Sleeping is a problem because roosters make helluvanoise all night and when they stop a bunch of crazy dogs takes over and barks on and on. Earplugs is a must. The kitchen is infested by cats and occasional chicken. I love animals, but not around my plate and food. Shops bike and kayak rentals are close by, the beach is skinny and a bit too shallow to swim. The claustrophobic rooms could do with some renovation. There is one guy (actually the only nice person on the whole premise) doing all the work on this place. From cleaning to gardening. He's off on Sunday, so whatever dirt is around stays until Monday.

My husband, daughter and I camped here last week for 8 nights. It was wonderful. The owner showed us around, was always kind and helpful. Location is wonderful and we will remember the beautiful sunsets every night. Good snorkelling right on the beach and easy access to shops and eateries. The shared showers and toilets were always clean and so was the kitchen. We will definitely return and bring more family with us next time.

I disagree with the comments below, in my opinion the kitched wasn't so dirty. The place is very cheap (only 15 euros per night! unbelievable for French Polynesia, probably the cheapest place in the country), the location is great, fresh and beautiful; there is a supermarket very close.
The toilets are pretty clean; the only thing I might complain is the small space to put your things in the shared bungalow (but after all, who cares? it's more space than in a tend), and the walls eccessively thin, which let you easily get woken up by party people coming back from a club in the middle of the night.

It's the best place if you have to pass through French Polynesia and you don't want to risk to finish your money: you can relax, swim, see sharks and any kind of animal in the sea, and settle down for a while before coming back to Tahiti.

PS go to the supermarket early in the morning, there's no much food left if you go after 10:00 am

We stayed here in October 2015 and it was the best budget option we could find in Hauru Point. The place is very basic, but functional. The toilet block had a lot of showers and toilets and was fairly clean. The location is really convenient, just on the beach and there are picnic tables to sit on throughout the green. There is also wifi that works across most of the area. No real complaints, it's budget and basic, but good value.

This is a rather basic campground that is currently undergoing a lot of renovation work. As long as the common areas and kitchen are under construction you probably should plan on having a car when you stay here. There are not many places to go in the area and no where in the campground so sitting in your car would be the place to relax and read, eat, etc. in the evening. Nearby shops and businesses have most services and supplies you would want but they close up early, by 6 or 7. A major benefit to staying here is the free and fast wifi. Other reviews are critical of the owners. I would not describe them as unfriendly as others do, just approach them as being French rather than Polynesian. They are efficient and professional and friendly enough by French standards. They were fine from my point of view. The camping area is divided into two areas, with different prices. If you opt for a more expensive beach campsite, you will have the advantages of wifi reception and proximity to the pleasant beach. If you opt for a lawn area campsite it costs less and you can park your car next to your tent. They are both a short walk to the shower and toilet areas. The showers are adequate and the toilets are somewhat grungy but have toilet paper (unlike many campgrounds in French Polynesia). There are literally no electrical outlets at all to recharge anything. Either charge it in your car or plan on asking the owners for permission to plug in during office hours. This is very inconvenient if you stay here at night and go out and about during the day--after a couple of days your devices will all be dead. All the rental cars have cigarette lighters but I don't think any have USB ports (think basic French cars here, totally unlike anything you may have rented in, say, Hawaii or Queensland.) So, bring a USB adapter from home, and a small inverter if you need wall current. The campground fronts a beautiful stretch of beach, with moderately good snorkeling and swimming right off the beach. Very good sunsets from the beach. There are nice picnic tables near the water but you will want to have mosquito coils and bug spray as there are lots and lots of insects. The grass is soft enough in all the sites that a footprint is probably not required. There is enough space that any size tent would work. The bathroom block is short on sink and mirror space so shaving and so on is a tad hard, but there is a big common sink that works to wash clothes and dishes. Overall a mixed bag but a good choice for this price and the best choice for campers on Moorea. If you are hard core and low budget you could camp for free off the record on some of the network of trails accessed from the Belvedere overlook parking lot but in this climate a shower and the amenities that Nelson offers is worth the price, and the ocean and underwater attractions just off the beach are a great bonus. I would stay here again. Once the kitchen and construction projects are complete this will be a much better value.
