Detailed Reviews
Stayed for four nights in Feb 2020.
This is a nice, clean hotel. In fact it is far and away the nicest place I saw in Puerto Viejo, which is not a pretty town at all.
It looks pretty new, everything is in good working condition, very clean and well maintained, rooms were comfortable and reasonably private and quiet, with air conditioning and comfortable beds. The design of the hotel doesn't really appeal to me personally, but I think it succeeds in what it's trying to do.
Prices are pretty reasonable considering the quality of accommodations. Breakfast is included in all room rates (I think: it definitely was in ours). The breakfast itself is not good, but we did not encounter any good food in Puerto Viejo, so may be typical for the area. They do have a full service restaurant open for dinner. We did not try it, so can't comment based on our experience. But it is there for you to try.
Service was quite good. All of the staff were pleasant and professional. The manager came by to greet each individual guest, including us. Free parking is available and, while we did not have many special requests, the staff were accommodating of the few that we did have.
Many other guests have noted that it's weird that the shower is basically part of the room, rather than a separate enclosed area. This did not create a problem for me personally, but I agree it is weird, and worth considering when deciding if you want to stay here.
The one constructive criticism I have: They play music in the common area throughout the day. This is a quiet nature area with many beautiful bird sounds, which I really could not enjoy because of the non-stop music. I hope they will consider doing away with that.

A little oasis in the center of Puerto Viejo. Great attention to details in this hotel and resto.
It is small and refreshing, really well designed, nice poolside lounging - though they could have more lounge chairs. Staff was super helpful and friendly, and the food was good. The rooms were smaller than pictured but nice and very clean, we slept really well here.
We stayed in several hotels during our stay in this area and this was by far the nicest and best value.

We just spent 11 fantastic nights at the Umami Hotel.
From the moment we arrived we knew we had made the right decision. The room was exceptionally clean on arrival and then expertly cleaned every day. A huge bed, that was a little bit firmer than we normally like, but we still had a perfect sleep due to how quite the hotel was. Great shower and good toiletries refreshed every day. There was also a freezer and fridge that was handy for storing beer and chocolate! A Nespresso machine in the room was also great for an afternoon espresso.
The breakfast choice really was fantastic and nothing was too much for the staff who served us. All out interactions with the people who worked there were first class and a special mention to Nelson and Tony who helped us out with a number of things over our stay. My wife also had a massage and she said this was really quality The location was also excellent, a 5 minute walk to the main strip, but in a quite location. We will definitely be back to stay here.
One small bit of feedback would be the music. It would be great if this came on later and finished earlier (maybe even just have it in the breakfast area first thing?) as 7am isn’t great if you want a lie in or 10pm not great of you want to get to sleep earlier.

Great hotel. Small courtyard with all rooms in a square compound. Rooms are decorated nicely. Coffee machine in each room. AC is wonderful for those humid afternoons. Small refrigerator AND freezer was nice to keep extra waters/beer. Bed was king size and very comfortable. Many reviewers made the comment about the shower being in the middle of the room which does not make any sense! This is an adult-only hotel and the showers/bathrooms were well appointed. We enjoyed the chairs on our front patio for our morning coffee. The free breakfasts were delicious. The drink reception when we arrived was delicious. We had mixed drinks each night/afternoon by the pool to cool off from the humidity/Salt water from the ocean. I would def stay here again…close to everything…howler monkeys in the trees close to the hotel….room was quiet so you could get a good nights sleep. We stayed at other hotels where roosters would wake you at 0330. This hotel wont disappoint!

This was the most expensive hotel that we stayed at during our 16 days in Costa Rica and the only one that was not worth the cost. We stayed four four nights and didn't have hot water for the first two days. The staff are all very nice, and we loved the coffee with steamed milk from the free breakfast. The location is great, although it's a bit hard to find even with Waze directions. We did not have any issues with parking. The bed is not very comfortable, nor are the pillows. The biggest issue is the lack of soundproofing. The tile floors meant we heard every movement in the room above us. And unfortunately there was a large group staying at the hotel, including two kids, and they were extremely disruptive to everyone else at the hotel. They stood outside our room in the early morning and yelled up at their friends. They played loud music and video chatted at the intimate breakfast room. They stayed in the pool way past closing and there is no one onsite after 10 p.m. to stop it. Of course the hotel is not accountable for all the guests' behavior, but it was clear that this group was disrupting everyone else at the hotel, and the staff did not help. I assumed based on the pictures that this was an adults' only, quiet couples' hotel, and that is not what it is.

Pro: We received a free upgrade on arrival, a premium suite and had a very spacious room on the highest (2nd floor). Nice breakfast if you have patience. Towel service for the pool and you can take the towels to the beach. There must be signed for the towels, somewhere logical. Apart from the sometimes too loud music, still a quiet hotel.
Con: Music started playing in the restaurant / lobby and swimming pool early in the morning at 7 a.m. This lasted until about 9.15 p.m. every evening. Long waiting for breakfast, sometimes waiting for half an hour or longer. Too few parking places in front of the hotel, the extra parking just outside on the left side of the hotel was a mess.

+1
My wife and I recently spent the first part of our 20th Anniversary celebration trip to Costa Rica at Umami in Puerto Viejo. It was an amazing boutique hotel, very tasteful in the decorations and thoughtfully they offered us a bottle of sparkling wine.
We spent 4 nights there. The garden and the pool are amazing. The only “small” issue, is the limited breakfast offer, there were three options, delicious, but we stayed 4 nights and is was very “tiring” same fruits everyday and sort of same plate.
The staff was very kind and gave us great tips on restaurants and things to do.
The pool, was very pleasant, so much that we spent 3 hours in the pool and make some friends there.
We visited other hotels, but in Porto Viejo, I believe Umami is the best.

I visited this hotel to celebrate my 40th birthday and give myself a well deserved break from work. The rooms have comfortable beds and delicious coffee to accompany a good read. However, the most special thing about the hotel is its restaurant, which has an excellent cost-quality ratio. Chef Baltazar's delicious creations along with Laura's cordial and attentive service made my birthday dinner simply spectacular.

Stayed 2 nights at Umami as it was the only hotel in Puerto Viejo close to our style. There are yet not that many hotels around with a modern and nice touch.
It`s 3 blocks away from the main street and an easy walk also during nights as there are also some restaurants along the way.
Rooms are modern but a bit dark as all face the pool, hence there are no windows on the back side of the rooms, at least ours which was on ground floor. The pool is quite nice even though pretty small and does look bigger on pictures ;). Nevertheless, not a big deal, though. Rooms lacked a tiny bit of cleanliness which I was able to remove with a wipe - would have expected this to be done by the staff but also here not a big deal.
Highlight is for sure breakfast which is a la carte. You can choose from 3 different style of breakfast. Unfortunately we ordered the vegetarian one on our last day and regretted not having done so from the beginning as it was really tasty. Cereals which are offered are more ordinary cornflakes than cereals so keep that in mind.
Definitely worth staying there if you fancy a little nice modern place.

We arrived and were welcomed by Nelson one of the team. He was extremely friendly and quickly processed us and took us to our room. Our room number was 107(ground floor) The room was bright and clean, the adjoining bathroom was spacious with a great shower and plenty of hot water. (The bed was a little hard for me) In front of our room there were 2 comfortable seats. The pool was small with only 4 loungers and some additional chairs. The gardens in and around the hotel were exceptional, exotic plants and visiting hummingbirds. The breakfast was ok. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, special thanks to Tony, Nelson and the breakfast team. Carlos the manager would always have time for a chat. My only criticisms are sometimes there was a smell of sewage outside and the music played in reception too loud.Overall I would recommend a stay here.

Do I need travel insurance to enter Costa Rica?
Goodness me, no! Just a hotel without children. If I am going away without my own, I don't want to listen to other people's crying ;)
