The Grateful Hotel is a chill experience. Phil, the owner, is very laid back but also on top of his business. The food is incredible at Sugarees Bar and Grill, which is part of the Grateful Hotel. I’ll leave a separate and more in depth review of the food on the Sugaree Bar and Grill page. The hotel was not fancy nor did it need to be but it was clean and the pool in the center of the campus is awesome. They have a band play music most nights which is awesome if you like Grateful Dead and/or live music. The art on the walls made it vibrant and everyone wears tie dye which was exciting. The bartenders are well trained and awesome local people. It’s a beautiful spot near Playa Grande and the beach is actually one of my favorites i’ve ever seen. It’s close to Tamarindo but a lot quieter! You can do a ride (5 minutes) to Tamarindo or drive and it takes about 30 minutes. Awesome experience, will be back.

Room Tip: not many snacks or convenient stores close by, but you’re also not far from Tamarindo where there...

This is a truly a magical place! Phil and Denise have done an amazing job turning this property into a Grateful Dead paradise! And the best part is that it can be enjoyed just as much by someone who has not even discovered the Dead yet. Wonderful staff and smiles and greetings from everyone I met. Rooms are private and safe, and decorated GRATE! Hard to imagine a property where you can be so close to the party, but just a quick walk to room or pool or a quiet place to chill. Bartenders and wait staff are super nice and part of the fun no doubt! Never a frown and always ready to make any crazy drinks you may have in mind. I recommend the mango margarita! 10 minute walk to the Ocean (maybe 12 for a slow poke like me). Can't even begin to describe the majesty and awesomeness of the view as you approach the Ocean and Playa Grande. If you're looking for a beach with tons of activity and people, this isn't it. Playa Grande was safe, clean and tons of room for anyone that was there. (i.e. not crowded at all, opposite of Tamarindo). The sunset you just have to see for yourself but consensus among other guests is that it was hard to top, anywhere. The food was amazing! At this point you probably think I'm exaggerating, but I'm not. Getting around in CR isn't always easy or convenient, but people are coming here for the FOOD who don't even know who the Grateful Dead are! Every single meal I had was great. Shrimp quesadillas, Surf and Turf, chicken wings, calamari, apps, all of it! Live Music both Saturday night, and for Sunday Funday was great! People from all over the community come by for a jammin good time, whether it's New Year's Eve, November 13th, or BOTH (haha). If you do want to sneak way to town, water taxi is cheap and easily available to take you across. Costa Rica in general was amazing, this was my first visit. If you are a Deadhead, old or new, this place needs to be on your (hell in a) bucket list! Always a fun adventure to meet other fans from across the world! The experience is as immersive and amazing as you want it to be. My entire trip was truly a spiritual and wonderful journey and it would not have happened without the help of this place. Seriously, you need to check it out! The Music Never Stops!! Pura Vida!!

We walked up coming from our shuttle to immediately meet the owners Phil and Denise. At that exact moment fresh cocoa cookies came out of the oven and we are offered one. The most delicious cookie I may have ever had ! So we sit down and talk to Phil about rules around the hotel which he explains there is only 3. 1. No politics 2. No smoking in the rooms and 3. Treat your stay like a 1977 Grateful Dead show! I knew right then that we were in for a great vacation! The property was stunning with murals all around with tons of amazing Grateful Dead imagery. There is a pool and a jacuzzi tub that sit in the middle of the restaurant and the rooms. So we unload our bags into our room and then head back to the bar for some laughs and mingling with the fellow guests. The guests turn into your friends and you’ll be hanging around like a dead show in no time. Around the property there is various fun wildlife to see from the howler monkeys who hang in the trees in the morning to the iguanas in the gutters in the afternoon it was so fun like they were also there to hang. Now the rooms are simple but sweet ice cold ac, tv , safe, and memory foam topped bed. Now all of this is great and all but at the end of the day one of the best things about this place is the staff from the two bartenders Andres and arnest to the manager shantell to the owners Phil and Denise to the amazing staff all around the property making it look nice this place will leave you making new friends everywhere. Now comes the time for planing excursions which regularly is stressful because you’re trying to figure out whatsapp and stuff but at the grateful hotel you can just talk to Denise and she can help set up whatever you would wanna do. We did a volcano excursion I highly suggest it. So the hotel is located in the back end of the palm beach estates in the playa grande so you will never have a problem getting to Tamarindo because the water taxi goes back and forth to there all day just make sure you get one back before five because they stop running then. Would I return ? Absolutely the love in that spot is second to non and it is intoxicating like a Grateful Dead show makes you feel! Go there and have a miami Vice and relax. “And I am saying thank you for a real gooood time” Sincerely, Pumpkin and Jillian !!!!

My wife and I first visited the Grateful Hotel in February and we’re so blown away by the location, staff, food and entertainment that we brought our 3 kids back in May! The hotel itself is perfectly located to have easy access to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! From surfing to strolling, sunsets to sunrises, Playa Grande Beach offers a private and personal experience. If you want a more public and busy beach, the Grateful Hotel offers a quick water taxi (which is cool in itself!) over to Tamarindo Beach. You can also explore the estuary by boat (highly recommend and very informative) right from the hotels back yard. The hotel itself offers clean, perfect sized rooms (with AC) right outside the beautiful landscaped pool. The beds in the room are super comfy too! With Sugarees bar and grill as part of the hotel, order your food and drink poolside! So perfect! Not to mention the food is fabulous (I’ve had just about everything on the menu)! Order up a chocolate martini and listen to live entertainment at night! Great music and great food and great staff (so nice and busy!)! I can’t wait to return at the beginning of the year!!!!

This part of playa grande is gorgeous, and the hotel is right on the estuary. Close walk to the surf and away from the Tamarindo crowds. I have to admit, I wasn't a big grateful dead fan, but this place converted me. The atmosphere and camaraderie between all the guests is amazing. It has a very close-community vibe and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Live music and an amazing restaurant and bar right outside your door.
