We opted for the Art Deco room category for complimentary limo transport and other treats! We have spent there four nights and five days. Our objective was an immersion in Shanghai, feeling its flavor and meeting with local friends in good condition—high standards amenities, caring personnel, splendid art Deco facade, and good breakfast. But on top of everything, the hotel location is unique: 200 meters to Nanjing Road, 5 minutes to Peoples’ Square, a 30-minute walk to the ancient city site… and Peoples Square Underground station with at least four lines.
CNY 2599 per night for a two-bedroom room with breakfast included with direct booking sounds like a very reasonable price.
NB: no room service.

The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The building and interior is very beautiful, I fell in love the moment I went into the hotel.
The rooms are spacious and very nice decorated, lovely details like the candy box on the night stand, big bathroom with bathtub.
Also the decorations and furniture in the public space is very beautiful and matching the whole building. Breakfast is good.
The staff is friendly and efficient on check in and check out.
The hotel is very convenient right behind the Nanjing Road, next to People’s square and the MTR station. Restaurants and shops close by.
I’m looking forward to come back soon.

I stayed at the Yangtze Hotel once before around 2018 and was glad to have a chance to visit again. I noted only one change, the ground floor restaurant is now separated from the rest of the hotel and breakfast is served in a few rooms on the 9th floor. Maintenance is excellent, the room designs are varied and interesting, sleep quality was wonderful and the location is convenient right across from Exit 14 of People's Square subway station. In cool weather the Bund is a pleasant 15-20 minute walk away (not so pleasant on a steamy Shanghai summer day). This is a really charming hotel, a bit of a time warp in the best possible way, and unlike any other hotel I've come across in China.

This is a lovely, small hotel near Peoples square. Its 1920's era with generous sized rooms, huge bathrooms and a very pretty entrance. The breakfast buffet on the 9th floor is great value and the staff are very helpful. The rooms are clean and well serviced with a turn down service every evening. The metro is nearby as are several convenience stores. There is limited parking out the front but we didnt have any problems getting Didi's to collect us. A very convenient spot.

This art deco style boutique hotel was a delight. The location is as good as it gets...literally yards away from a metro stop exit, it is close enough to see a lot of major attractions near and around the Bund and Nanjing Road.
The room was very comfortable with some nice welcome touches - a fruit plate and candy. The concierge service was excellent. We were well serve by Ray who promptly took care of our taxi and tour recommendation needs.
The only quibble may be the breakfast, which was ordinary, when so many alternatives abound in the area.
All in all, we had a very comfortable stay, and will mostly likely go back on our next trip to Shanghai.

Many good remarks had been written about this boutique and rather unique hotel.,thus it was with high anticipation when i decided to check it out.
To begin wiith it is just a block off the famous Nanjing pedestrian street which is a hate or like it street.,blooming with herds of tourists as well as scammers at times.Neverthelss it is actually a beautiful and colourful street and i would actually advice foreign tourists to at least walk this street once.
As a coincidence as our apartment needed some renovations done,we
had taken this opportunity to check out the Langhams.,and what better way to do it through an independent website booking.
Thus we got Agoda to secure a room ,nonrefundable package at the Art Deco Junior Suite room with a 25%discount.The price is quite a bargain considering that an enormous room of 50sqm with a separate hall,a spacious toilet and another small washroom, good size bedroom with an equally good size bed.
The hotel voucher had also clearly stated the Art Deco Junior Suite and as precautionary measure i had
actually informed the reception as well about the junior suite room.Checking in was quite uneventful just like most hotels after having to wait 2 hours for room to be ready as we were early.
Hotel is on a small size,it would beautifully fit in as a hideaway if not for the ultrabusy Nanjing street nearby., with the highest at 8th level.,equally small sized lifts but well decorated with old shanghainese charm. In fact the lobby and corridors are also nicely donewith welldone paintings and deco and high back antique chairs lending a charm to the old shanghai feel.
Having said all that ,we were brought up to our room in the super small lift at the 6th level. It has a small sized balcony ,a not too big and slight crammed bathroom,ok sized bed but rather high as probably it is made to cater to more expats. For most asians it wouldnt be surprising that they find their legs hanging in mid air.
Now im very sure we are not in the right room. From what i had seen from the website photos this room probably fits in as the Shanghai grand.,a rather small sized room at about 38sqm.A quick phone call to the reception was rather disappointing as they were rather evasive.Withou t checking..
further they hadreplied that it s the correct room. Thus this followed a second phone call and i insisted that she look through the hotel voucher carefully, another evasive and unconvincing reply .This time the excuse was that they had run out off junior suite room.,and so...for the day we need
to settle with the grand room.No earnest mention of any apologies for the burden caused and the profuse excuses given earlier. However we were told that they will upgrade us to a better than a art deco junior suite the next day.
This is not i have in mind and also not i am seeking for.Im actually looking for a remote hint of proper apology by way of words or some gestureof sorts.A setback was that the room would not be ready early the next day,it would be afternoon or later.,and so since im always a busy guy i told them we would check into our new room late at night.
So with our tired and fatique legs we checked into a new room at the 7th floor.,at about 10pm.Again what a disappointment that there was a lack of commitment from the hotel side as its the junior suite room and not a better one as was promised the night before by the staff. I
wouldnt have minded though but what glaring mistake and lack of professionalim from the hotel management is,there was no proper explanation henceforth about compensation or even deductions on staying in a cheaper room on the first night. They would need to explain on the discrepancy of roomrates involved and the clear breach of contract involved.
Somehow im not too sure whether a less than impressive room was given to us hopefully unnoticed since we had booked through a discount website???
On checking out after 4 nights, still eager n panting
forapology ,we were left disappointed as none seems likely. In fact they dont make mistake on billing 40Rmb for a bottle of evian water.
Having stayed in countless hotels big or small, this rather easy to solve mistake would actually be handled properly by the hotel management to pacify the guest.,not just blaring excuses over the phone.
From the look of the hotel and the physical assets of theinterior ,it is not difficult to make it a pleasant stay for many guests. But it is a shameful waste when this attributes are wasted and guests are left wandering what had happened to basic values of professionalism.Certainly it wouldnt take much for the management to go out an extra limb to atone for giving the wrong rooms and some empty promises.
i had never encountered such blatant mistake in other 5 star hotels.,some small mistake on the hotel part are usually tackled with efficiency and some geniuene apologies easily makes the guests grinning.I am not sure that this mistake was reported to the seniors or not but grossly it was handled in a very badway with a bad aftertaste.

I have stayed several times at this hotel, but always when it was under the management of the Langham Group. So when I revisited in July 2013 under the new management, the state-owned Shanghai Hengshan Group, I can make a good comparison between what was before and what is now.
First off, I want to state that the new management had inherited a very good set of hardware, and for that if nothing else, this hotel is still a good bet. I must also commend the new management in trying very hard to keep to the expectations of many discerning guests from within and outside China. So much so that it seems there is a blind mimicking of what the old management was doing. From the signature pink hues, to the font used in the (new) logo, to the opening music of the classic "Rose, Rose I Love You" when you switch on the TV and even the signature orchid scent permeating the hotel lobby, it's not hard to surmise that Hengshan is trying VERY hard to tell guests, both old and new, that little has changed and they can still be as good as what Langham did, maybe even better.
Well, for that, the Hengshan Group scored well. But sadly, I need to report that not everything is the same as before. The panache and the X-factor of a Langham is now missing, and unless you actually know the status the Yangtze holds in Shanghai high society in the pre-war years, you will miss the mysticism exuded by the Yangtze name altogether. The Art Decor style and the generous size of the room simply shows the legacy of the last management; the service standard of the front desk and the housekeeping staff betray strains of state-owned company culture.
But is it serious? Well, some incidents to relate and you decide yourself if little had truly changed.
Previously, simple stuff like cotton buds, cotton pads in the so-called vanity pack were made available in the bathroom automatically. This time round, I need to ask for it and only after a wait of some 30 minutes were they delivered by a less-than-friendly staff who actually gave that bewildering look that "you mean you actually need such stuff" since I'm a man.
The soiled face towels were not replaced the next day, and I need to ask for them. The used cotton buds accidentally dropped on the floor of the bathroom were not picked up or thrown away. The Do Not Disturb sign was switched on but housekeeping still knocked and delivered the welcome fruit platter. Front desk asked some questions on the restaurant, and the answer was a curt "why don't you go up and ask them yourself".
Granted these aren't too important and they did not mar the stay at all. But as I said, the quality of service by state-owned enterprises in China shone through shamelessly in these examples. Am I nitpicking here? I do not think so. Look at the concierge staff, who were essentially retained from the last management's team. Dick, Ray and James and all stood out impressively in their eagerness to please, to greet you by name and help you in your luggage and shopping. Dick's help in getting my railway ticket, and the ability to explain some unexpected screw-ups with a good sense of humour simply shows how high his EQ is. So, frankly, I must say service standards in the newly-managed Yangtze have generally slipped vis-a-vis what it used to be.
I have commented on the amenities in the room and the very romantic, Art Decor style in my last review. I think it will take some time for hardware to deteriorate so for now, it's still a safe bet to stay here for the hardware alone. The showers worked well, the furniture still look good, net speed was adequate and the generous room size remains a fact. And of course, its location right next to the most important station in the Shanghai metro system can't be beaten.
If you aren't too particular with the slipped service standard, and like me can easily put up with the quirks of service providers in state-owned enterprises in China, then come stay here for the old-world charm. The location, atmosphere and design of the Yangtze is enough reason, if nothing else.

In a word: superb. Conveniently located two blocks from Nanjing Road, across the street from People's Park, and in a low rise 1934 Art Deco building whose interior was refurbished 2 years ago, this hotel is a gem -- friendly, attentive staff; beautiful large bedrooms and wonderful bathrooms (my room faced the adjacent church rather than the interior courtyard); gorgeous two floor Art Deco interior courtyard where a musician on the first floor plays music in the morning and late afternoon while the friendly servers at the beautiful lounge on the second floor have a nice happy hour two-for-one wine selection (quite good) with snacks; perfectly fine morning breakfast buffet (around 20 USD if that meal is not included in your package); free and very fast WIFI, though of course many web sites are blocked; and small but adequate fitness facility. I did not try the on-site spa. While large, impersonal high rise hotels are common in Shanghai, this one is for those who like small "period" hotels with charm, taste, and a sense of China. On my last evening, I was having a glass of wine in the second floor lounge that overlooks the atrium when a woman walked down the grand curving staircase to the first floor, singing a 1930s song, posing for photos. So stylish!

The hotel was centrally located right near the pedestrian shopping area of Nanjing Dong Lu. For first time visitors, it is convenient for accessing the Bund. But it is actually a terrible area to be in in terms of food and other activities. Although everything else is easily accessible by subway. We will not stay in this area again. We will most likely be in the French concession or the financial district of Pudong next time. Because most of the good food were near those areas. Getting to the hotel from Pudong airport was a breeze, we just took Line 2 all the way to People's Square and the hotel is right across the street from exit 14. Taking subway line 2 takes about the same amount of time as Maglev. Which is about 1hr10m. I'd suggest doing the subway to save money. It is only 7 RMB compare to 44 RMB with Maglev.
Our check-in process was easy and simple. Our room was comfortable and clean. The bathroom amenities were wonderful. WiFi worked great throughout our stay and we were able to access all sites without a VPN. From the hotel we were able to walk and take public transport to everything Shanghai. If you are looking for good Chinese food. XinBaiLu is on the 9th floor just a block away. But most other food places we liked were either near the French Concession or the Financial district of Pudong.
The hotel does not come with Breakfast, but there was a bread place called Breadtalk across the street at the basement of the mall. For the price we paid, we were surprised that breakfast wasn't included. But it is what it is.
Overall it was a great hotel and we will be back if we need to be near People's Square. But we will most likely stay near French concession next time.

I just completed a seven night stay at the Yangzte Boutique Hotel and recommend it highly. Prior to arriving, they responded quickly to all emails sent. Throughout the week, all areas of the hotel had ample staff. Each staff member was helpful, extremely courteous and they all spoke the appropriate amount of English. That includes the housekeeper on my floor, who would say good morning and asked if my room was ready for clean up! The wi-fi in the hotel worked superbly at all times for my iPad. The room was extremely quiet, fairly large and had lots of outlets for electronic devices.
The location of the hotel is superb. Usually, a couple of empty taxis were waiting at the front door. Otherwise, it took about a minute to get one. The metro station is right across the street, and a lot of attractions are within walking distance. The breakfast in the dining room is very good, and there are three Starbucks within a block. The neighborhood is real safe- I went for walks at 11 at night.

From memory if you turn left immediately you leave the hotel, virtually go straight over the first road and turn right at the next road almost opposite there is a large store the ground floor of which sells mainly sweets and similar.. Go up the escalator and there are 2 restaurants selling local dishes. We were the only non Chinese there. Good food and very inexpensive.
Hope my directions are accurate enough.

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom669 contributions210 helpful votesHi, could you tell me if all the rooms have a balcony - many thanks
I emailed the hotel direct & they gave us a room with a balcony.
Very comfortable beds! I slept very well.
When we stayed at this hotel we booked a double room. It was ok for three, but for four it will be uncomfortably tight. You will need two rooms. It's really worth the extra space. Also get the breakfast with the rooms, it is an amazing spread from fresh omelets to noodles.
Have a great trip, we definitely did.
