This was one of the most special island experiences I have had in my life. The service and staff are amazing and make sure to tend to your needs during your stay. The food is amazing, activities are plentiful, and direct access to surf breaks and nature is unmatched. This trip provided the opportunity to gain a real Fijian experience. The food portion sizes are plentiful and taste great. In terms of the surf, if you are looking for no crowds and perfect surf, this might be one of the most special places you can find in the world. The Maqai wave is near perfect and broke consistently for our entire week stay. Thank you Cathy for organizing our trip and special thanks to Navo our surf guide and Tui our boat driver for making the experience smooth, accommodating, and memorable. Highly recommend the island tour besides surfing if you are looking for some world class coral reef snorkeling.

Awesome place with awesome people. Shout out to Navo and Tui, they are the greatest of all time. Come for the surf, stay for the people. There was amazing food and multiple entertaining activities to fill the days. Not to mention a great surf break.

Thanks for ruining the rest of our holiday by setting an unbelievable standard of hospitality and location that no one else could top!!! Maqai resort was an absolute dream! The staff were absolutely excellent with special mention to George and Tui for taking us surfing, snorkelling everyday and letting us come to their church/village for a tour.Floyd always had a smile on his face and a cocktail ready with every delicious meal- prepared by Mama Lucy incorporating locally grown food. Cannot stress how good these meals were, ranging from fresh seafood to hearty curries, pizza and homemade bread and local vegetable soups. Kana Vinaka every time! We were exceptionally lucky to have great surf conditions (with no one else out), but the snorkelling trips were next level too. Despite the rain, the staff welcomed us and kept us entertained with nightly Kava, ping pong, volleyball and Uno competitions. So much smiling! The rooms were turned down each day with fresh hibiscus and dry towels. Qamea is such a beautiful island close enough to Taveuni to do day trips as well. Thank you Cathy and the crew and Sooki the dog, we cannot wait to come back! From Timmy and Hannah

Paradise. We were treated like royalty , again.. The food is amazing, being serenaded to every night by the local staff with a cup or 2 of kava. rooms are quaint, clean , serviced daily, bed turned down every night. We are always made to feel like part of the family. Awesome waves with no crowds. They have a large selection of surfboards to suit everyone.Snorkelling trips,. trips to amazing waterfalls etc.James ,one of the staff just makes you smile every day . his bush medicine helped me so much when I injured myself. they are all so very obliging and always smiling. Once again, James is worth his weight in gold. His knowledge of the islands, their bush tucka, the medicines , history is awesome.Warm crystal clear water is so soothing. An amazing holiday destination for those who want great surf, awesome diving etc and just plain relaxing on a tropical paradise . we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Maqai is a slice of paradise. Everything from the beach to the food to the snorkeling is wonderful. The sunsets are spectacular. Our room was all we needed with turn-down service each night, and hot showers that were great after a sweaty day. Like so many reviewers say - it's the staff that makes this place so special. We felt like family. Sala, James, Navo, Uli, Mama Soko, Charlie, Wani and Cathy -- you are the best part of our trip. Deepest thanks. Sota Tale, we can't wait to see you again soon.

A slice of paradise. Great location on a secluded beach. The rooms are basic, but had everything we needed, especially a fan! The snorkeling just off the beach is good, and other spots around the islands nearby are just outrageously clear and teeming with life. You eat 3 meals a day at the resort, and we enjoyed each one - we were there 7 days and no dish was repeated. So good, we would happily return, and we're not even surfers. The only thing you need to worry about is being adopted by the staff and never being able to leave. Thanks Cathy and team!

This place is spectacular and the staff are so much fun, and really looked after us. From beautiful food to epic games of volley ball, table tennis and crab races. We especially enjoyed the evening sing alongs with James ( and the odd cup of Kava). Spending long hours swinging in the beachside hammocks and swimming right out front in the beautiful clear water. We had a fantastic traditional Fijian wedding here, it couldn't have been better. Catherine the resort manager did a fantastic job of organising it for us and went over and above sorting out all the legals and paperwork beforehand, really pulling off a miracle with the local authorities to get it done. Then the actual wedding was spectacular with absolutely stunning local flowers and traditional outfits, they really made us feel very special. We shard a delicious feast with everyone that was cooked in the ground in the traditional way. No surf this time but it didn't really matter as its just such a great place to hang. Highly recommended, cannot wait to go back!

I honestly don't know how to put into words how incredible the Maqai Surf Resort and it's staff are. I never expected to go to a resort and leave feeling like I was saying goodbye to family. I never expected to go to a resort and cry alongside the staff when we left. Arriving we met kathy, the owner, and she had given James the responsibility of being our guide for the duration of the stay. If we ever wanted to adventure beyond the resort, James would be the one to go along with us. James is one of the kindest souls I have ever met, and I will truly miss him. We made some incredible memories whilst there. We got to know each other on a personal level. He, like the rest of the team, don't just treat you as a guest. They treat you like family. If you are ever considering visiting Fiji, you have to.. and I mean HAVE TO visit the Maqai Surf Resort for as long as you can. Other resorts feel like just that, a hotel. But staying here felt like staying in a local village of Fiji. It was a truly authentic experience. Love you guys so so much! And I will be back, I promise! Sega na leqa -David Patterson

We had a lovely stay here. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. This place is very off the beaten path, which is what me and my wife were going for on our honeymoon. James was the activities coordinator and he was really great. Unfortunately the surf during our stay was blown out but I guess that means we just have to return! Definitely do the day trip around the island. One of the most fun days in Fiji!
