Absolutely incredible island with surf, snorkelling and beautiful unspoilt beaches as well as the friendliest staff. We loved our time here and we’re so grateful to be able to have fun times with the staff and take part in traditions like cava ceremonies, weaving and lovo oven cooking. There was plenty for everyone to do, including my 5 and 15 year old daughters, and also plenty of time to relax in the beautiful setting. The staff worked so hard to make everything lovely for us and we appreciated their warmth and welcome so much. This is a very special place because of the interaction with Fijian people and the unspoilt location. We hope it will always stay this way. Thank you all!

Thanks for ruining the rest of our holiday by setting an unbelievable standard of hospitality and location that no one else could top!!! Maqai resort was an absolute dream! The staff were absolutely excellent with special mention to George and Tui for taking us surfing, snorkelling everyday and letting us come to their church/village for a tour.Floyd always had a smile on his face and a cocktail ready with every delicious meal- prepared by Mama Lucy incorporating locally grown food. Cannot stress how good these meals were, ranging from fresh seafood to hearty curries, pizza and homemade bread and local vegetable soups. Kana Vinaka every time! We were exceptionally lucky to have great surf conditions (with no one else out), but the snorkelling trips were next level too. Despite the rain, the staff welcomed us and kept us entertained with nightly Kava, ping pong, volleyball and Uno competitions. So much smiling! The rooms were turned down each day with fresh hibiscus and dry towels. Qamea is such a beautiful island close enough to Taveuni to do day trips as well. Thank you Cathy and the crew and Sooki the dog, we cannot wait to come back! From Timmy and Hannah

Im sitting here at 5.15am , ive just made my plunger of coffee and Sala and Mossy are setting up the eating area for breakfast. Its my last day of 10 and im reflecting on just how amazing this place is. Im here with 7 other mates and two of us are celebrating our 50th's. We've had some amazing days surfing both the right and the left which is just a 5 minute boat ride straight out from the island. Even when the winds up the left has the most amazing clean faces. And when your not surfing you can snorkel straight out in front where the reef drops away into a blue abyss. I watched a turtle cruise on by yesterday along with more fish than i thought possible.
I could keep on writing about how great this island is , but to sum it up the staff are next level and will go out of their way to make sure you get everything you need , the food is amazing , the surf is awesome and uncrowded and the whole "vibe" is something i will never forget. Do yourself a favour and get here

A slice of paradise. Great location on a secluded beach. The rooms are basic, but had everything we needed, especially a fan! The snorkeling just off the beach is good, and other spots around the islands nearby are just outrageously clear and teeming with life. You eat 3 meals a day at the resort, and we enjoyed each one - we were there 7 days and no dish was repeated. So good, we would happily return, and we're not even surfers. The only thing you need to worry about is being adopted by the staff and never being able to leave. Thanks Cathy and team!

The setting of the resort is beautiful, on the water surrounded by lush rainforest. The rooms are just a few steps away from the beach offering great views. Lie in the hammoc on what feels like your own private beach, or swim, snorkel or dive on the reef just off the beach. Enjoy empty waves or spear some fish, and come back to consistently delicious meals prepared every day. All of the staff were so kind and welcoming and helpful and put in every effort to make sure we had everything we wanted. The rooms were kept spotlessly clean and the girls always added a thoughtful touch to make sure we were always comfortable.
We loved every minute and were sad to leave! But we will be back 🥰 Vikana !

I liked...no, I loved every minute of my stay at Maqai. It is as close to paradise as I'll allow my pragmatic mind to entertain. From the relative remoteness to the natural beauty, the super-relaxed atmosphere to the genuine warmth of the staff, this is a very special place. More of a traveller vibe than that of the well-worn tourist path of the islands closer to Nadi. Slightly rustic? Sure, but only in the best possible way.
Cathy (manager) ran as tight a ship as possible on a tropical island in the Pacific. She was welcoming and prompt with her email replies to my questions regarding all the various water sports and cultural experiences on the island. In no particular order, the following staff members quickly began to feel like old friends...Navo, Etta, Sala, Emosi, Soni, Tui, Junior, Jale, Johnny, Mama's Soke & Luce, Netta and Suki (four legged and furry). They all exude such an authentically friendly yet service oriented approach to their individual roles. I can't speak highly enough of how they looked after me.
It is up to you how much or how little activity you schedule into your day on Qamea. Highlights included surf trips to the outer reefs, snorkelling and lunch on the Island Tour, the Sunday morning village visits and church service, and the food. Crikey, the food. I had to ask for slightly less portions by dinner time, or I would have no room left for evening kava with the locals!
If you're reading this review and considering/comparing it with other options in Fiji, fair enough, but I honestly feel it is a rare and rich experience worth every cent and the added travel time to get there. Bula! Tama.

This was the perfect honeymoon spot. Pristine beaches, amazing food, and the best staff ever. They made us feel like family while spoiling us at the same time. Great waves for surfing, along with the best snorkeling of our lives. The Kava and live music each evening made celebration available to all who will join. If you want to relax on the sand or in a hammock in tranquility this is the place. Uncrowded and beautiful. They went above and beyond to make our honeymoon the best.

This slice of paradise is my favourite place I have been in my life. The people are who make it so beautiful. Cathy was the most wonderful host- making sure we had everything we needed and more. Charlie treated us like family :) my new BFF! We will visit again as soon as possible x With only 10 bures right on the beach. The resort is secluded and the water is crystal clear. The snorkelling was awesome - seeing big blue starfish and tropical fish. Loved the surfing and meeting fellow surfers from around the world who were also so lovely and fun. The most wonderful night was celebrating our anniversary- Charlie made us a beautiful table with delicious dinner and we were serenaded by the whole staff in song x Thank you Maqai Eco Surf Resort! I cried when I left ❤️🌺

The resort is small and simple and it provides everything you need. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The location is simply wonderful, with warm clear water, sandy beach and plenty of chairs and hammocks to lie around in and relax. There are lots of other activities; some free and some come at a cost. A visit to snorkel the coral garden Michelle's reef is well worth it. The diversity of corals and clarity of the water there is breathtaking.
We didn't score any truly epic surf, but we did have some very good surf and you could see the potential in the right hander out the front. The wave is not dredging barrels pitching out over a shallow reef, but is more of a gentle wave with walling sections. It is great fun.
The meals were so delicious. These were mostly fish and tropical fruits and vegetables, done in different ways. The fish was often pulled out of the sea by other guests hours before it was on our plates. Fabi and the other cooks do a wonderful job. Jonathan was effervescent and such a delight (with great disco tunes) and Cathy does an excellent job of keeping everything running smoothly.
And this leads on to the real jewels in the crown of Maqai; the staff. Everyone (literally EVERYONE) is happy, smiling and friendly. Within hours everyone knows your name and greets you warmly. Guests are always welcomed into the afternoon volleyball games and the evening Kava ceremonies. They play music and sing beautifully most evenings. We stayed a week and when we left it genuinely felt like we were leaving friends behind (there were tears by us and the staff).
We will definitely be returning!
Some advice for potential travelers; - Bring reef shoes. You'll need them to snorkel and swim out the front of the resort. - Bring along some gifts for the staff and their children. They deserve a bit extra. Items of clothing, sporting equipment, make up (lipsticks, shimmering eye shadows), books/pens etc for school. It is never asked for or expected, but is all appreciated and welcomed. - Brush up on your volleyball, table tennis and ukulele skills.

It was great a great little getaway but definitely had some areas to improve on.
The transit from the airport was prompt and friendly. The boat trip over did get a little hairy in spots but that was expected and we were warned. We were greeted at the beach front by the staff, all singing and giving us a huge warm welcome.
The accommodation was spacious enough and right on the water, not quite like the photo online but decent. We had no hot water so showers were not pleasant. When we asked about it someone said they’d have a look, then when we asked again on the third and final day we were told there was no more gas on the island. We were offered to shower in another villa but that wasn’t good enough in my opinion. We weren’t told about the water situation on arrival and not compensated in any way.
The food on the island is very overpriced. Unfortunately nothing like the photos online that portray fine dining. Breakfast is a selection of cereal, small fruit selection and eggs on toast. Lunches are good but only one course and quite basic food. The evening meals are really good. Normally a soup starter, a delicious main and a desert. The three days cost us $1100 which just didn’t seem fair when all said and done.
One of the best parts of the day is the inclusive volleyball game where staff and guests enjoy about an hour of rotation style play. Really good fun!!
The island is absolutely stunning. The beach is beautiful and clean and there is a short hike up the top of the surrounding hill. Other than that, there really isn’t too much to do unless you’re paying extras. The snorkelling is really only accessible for a 3ish hour period during high tide, unless you want to venture out into the larger breaking waves. One day we had booked for a snorkel trip but due to cloudy weather we didn’t go. I had also asked about seeing a local rugby match but that didn’t happen either.
Overall it was a great little trip and we were made to feel very welcome. Just felt like it didn’t live up to the websites expectations.

Bula Patrick Thank you for your review of Maqai, we thank you for your feedback. Yes the transfer is an open boat you and all our guests are sent information regarding the transfer and what to pack on your hand luggage, namely a rubbish bag to cover your suitcase we do have a large tarp also, a light rain jacket and reef booties if very low tides as a short walk is required. All guests are provided with life jackets and our boat captains. We apologise that you do not receive a hot shower when notifying staff and will speak to the team regarding, it was unfortunate that Taveuni had run out of gas during your stay. In regards to the meal plan we do endeavour to cater to everyone’s dietary requirements and believe that as we are located on an outer island our meal plan offers great value for money. The beach is tidal, a short walk around the corner to Nadillo bay at low tide will have you snorkelling and swimming at all tides , activities guides are on call for basket weaving, hiking, volleyball, badminton , coconut scraping sessions, card games, ukulele lessons. Kayaks and Stand up paddle boards are available for guest use. We thank you for taking the time to write your review and will endeavour to make improvements on what you have outlined Thank you for staying with us Vinaka vaka levu The Maqai Team

Bula Craig
Our Bar & Restaurant both have fridges to store our goods.
However we can store medical supplies if needed, but there are no fridges in the Bures, due to solar power constraints/eco tourism.
Kind regards
