Matamanoa Island is an intimate and secluded adults only Fijian resort. We are set in the beautiful Mamanuca Islands approximately 30 kilometers west of Nadi International Airport - experience a true gift of nature. The Island boasts a volcanic cone jutting out of the azure waters of this unspoiled marine sanctuary. Clad with native bush and palm trees, the brilliance of the vegetation contrasts magnificently with the white curved sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Combined with nature, we have created a haven for those who want to relinquish the pressures of a busy lifestyle. This is for those who dream of peace and tranquility. To achieve this special atmosphere, Matamanoa Island Resort has adopted a year round policy of not permitting day-trippers or children under the age of 16 years.

Matamanoa Island Resort is often celebrated for its friendly staff and pristine cleanliness, including the well-maintained pool and immaculate beachfront bures. While the live music is a hit, adding to the resort's atmosphere, some guests suggest a need for more energy and upkeep. Comfortable rooms are appreciated by visitors, but there are mentions of them being dated and basic. Despite the resort's praised amenities like snorkeling and private pools, the noise level at night and perceived high costs have led to some dissatisfaction regarding the overall value for money.

We were seeking an upmarket couples destination in Fiji, and were recommended to Matamanoa Island, having been to islands in Fiji, this one is a little further out, but seemed to be the relaxation we needed. When we first arrived, it was a wet arrival, meaning we had to take our shoes off to get off the boat, no problem, and initially I thought it might not have enough to do during our 10 day stay, well I was so far from it, it went so quickly, it suddenly was time for our departure. The rooms were very comfortable, although a bit of a walk to dinner, brekky, which after a few days was actually a good way to utilise some of the calories eaten. Drinks are expensive, so watch for that one, and every opportunity to get your dollars, if you are after a budget holiday, this place is not for you. Staff were friendly. The trip to Castaway Isle was fun and most of the other tourists on the island were very sociable. The plunge pool was very warm, more of a birdie boiler during the heat of the day. Snorkelling around the island is good, but you do need to pick your times and area, we saw a reef shark and lots of fish very close in to shore.
Cons were, that there was a constant stream of Chinese visitors who smoked constantly, and some were incredibly rude, talking loudly whilst the evening cultural and welcome/farewell shows were on which was incredibly disrespectful and some very rude to the beautiful Fijian people. Others bought their drones with cameras along, which is not permitted in Fiji without a permit and registration, and they rudely looked directly into our bure for several minutes which we immediately reported to management and they were reprimanded, but did not stop them from doing it a few days later. Drinks are expensive. Food is on a weekly cycle, and some days better than others, suggest only going for brekkie and dinner, we had a full package and couldn't eat it all.
Overall, we had a great time and would definitely go back again, I would suggest having one of the beachfront bures for the best experience, the Villas are a LONG walk to the main centre and in December you get a lot of the Matamanoa birds which are very loud at night and in the Villa area primarily, the garden bures are VERY average, ok if you are watching the $, however in my opinion, pay the bit extra and get the beachfront view.

Beautiful small adults only resort , stayed in beach bure - little to fault with room comfortable bed , couches , clean en-suite . Bit hit an miss with the cleaning never got our face washer or hand towel , beach towels replaced in 6 days despite being lacing on floor to change little disappointing for cost . Plunge Pool & outside area terrific right on the beach with a view to die for . Would certainly recommend to spend the bit extra for these rooms for your own pool and view of the sunset alone just magical
Food a little hit and miss but adequate most of the time .Staff are very friendly and when my husband was unwell for a few days were kind and helpful
My husband said he had one of the best massages ever the view from the hut was amazing
Would definitely recommend but for a week max as food would become an issue . Make sure you bring your own alcoholic/ drinks snacks for room as nothing really available to purchase
Thanks for a wonderful 6 days would love to return with friends / family

Loved this beautiful little island and had a wonderful time. The kitchen and bar staff and the employees and managers were amazing, friendly and awesome. Our room was huge and better than I expected and we loved it. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is it only has one restaurant and limited activities which if fine for a few days but after 7 we got a bit bored. Also, we were there over Christmas Eve and had no choice but to eat the set menu for $550 Fiji dollars (or $225 American dollars) for 2 people for Christmas eve dinner! This was a huge shock and major disappointment. There was also a cyclone coming after our 4th night there and we got stuck on the island (which is not their fault) however, they also charged us $550 American dollars for the 1 night we were stuck there which we felt was unfair since other people who were booked to come to the island were also paying for the room. The hotel needs to work on more activities during rainy weather. Bring a good book and download movies prior to arriving incase you get stuck. Activities are limited when the weather is bad and buy travel insurance.

Bula Aileen, It was lovely to host you on your recent visit, may I correct you on your quoted pricing, the Christmas Eve Gala Dinner was priced at Fiji Dollars $235 per person including tax which on today's exchange rate is US$108, and extremely reasonable for a gala dinner. Yes you are correct, there is only one restaurant on this small Island, however you can choose a romantic dinner for two on the beach, around the pool, on the deck overlooking the ocean, or in your beachfront accommodation and dinner menus are changed nightly. When there is an impending cyclone, the winds are quite strong and as a result, outdoor activities are limited for safety reasons. No need to download movies prior to arrival, wifi is free of charge and unlimited so you can stream movies. Good suggestion to pre purchase travel insurance prior to any travel. Happy that you liked your beachfront bure, they are extremely spacious at 54 square metres, and your private pool and cabana is a lovely place to relax and take in the wonderful atmosphere of the South Pacific. The staff and management wish you all the very best for the New Year. Vinaka

We spent 5 nights in a beach front Villa at Matamanoa Island. As annual travellers to Fiji we always spend time on an island to get the full Fijian experience. The mainland has many 5 star resorts but I don’t believe they give you the true Fijian Paradise. This is a 4 star, adults only resort that caters for less than 100 people. It relies on produce to be brought to the island, so if you are looking for a foodie experience this is not for you. The chef here is excellent, the quality and quantity of food is excellent, but again he can only provide so much variety. There was always a choice of meat, fish, chicken, vegetarian and salads with plenty of sides. You wont go hungry. OMG 😱 the eye fillet steak was absolutely amazing. Similarly, wine choices are limited but there is at least one of most varieties.

The rooms are very well appointed and cleaned perfectly every day with floors mopped and disinfected. The plunge pools are cleaned daily and the perfect size to cool off. There is plenty of beaches to swim, snorkel or soak up the sun. The most outstanding part of this trip was the staff. Everyone was smiling and engaging. From the local fisherman explaining they were netting sardines for bait, (as apparently they don’t fish the island to maximise the snorkelling experience) to the gardeners that would stroll past with a friendly bula, share their knowledge and even provided fresh coconuts.

We have to give a very special mention to Kelera. She is a lovely young Fijian woman who is very attentive to guests needs. The restaurant service was relaxed, but efficient. Young Bai, was the cheeky young rugby player who always made us laugh. So many people to mention, Kesa, Naomi (Campbell), Nancy and of course the pool guy. Plenty of activities if that’s what you want, or complete relaxation.

The day spa here is actually in a tree house. So in your 5 star resort you have the air conditioned spa room with soft ocean music playing. Not here. You are up in the trees, open air, overlooking the ocean and the reef with the natural sound of the surf and wind. Just stunning.

This was without doubt our best island experience to date. Thank you to the entire team here at Matamanoa. We can’t mention you all, but combined you made this ‘post COVID’ holiday, the most amazing Fijian experience. We cannot recommend this resort highly enough.

We stayed here for four nights from 30 April - 4 May in one of the villas on the other side of the island away from resort. It was magical.

The villa itself was a wow moment when we first saw it…so private and had day bed, plunge pool, sun loungers, outdoor shower and pretty large balcony overlooking the gorgeous mamanuca islands and some of the yasawas. Definitely recommend these rooms over all the others…room 50 and up (we were in 54). Inside was stunnnnnning…huge comfy bed, living area and large bathroom with high pressure shower, two basins and gorgeous Pure Fiji toiletries that were restocked daily. It’s easily the best “hotel room” I’ve ever stayed in. That view!!!

The walk to and from the main resort takes about 5 mins and is gorgeous…we stopped each time to admire the views, water, marine life, stars, islands, etc…so, so pretty.

The beach at high tide was pure tropical island bliss, with white sandy beaches and crystal clear water…if you can, time your stay for when high tide is about lunch time…although it’s still swimmable and very pretty at low tide.

The food was mostly epic, with the kokoda being an absolute standout. Lunch was our favourite meal of the day here.

Now if I was being suuuuuuper picky…

The room was supposed to have wifi (which we chose specifically as I was supposed to do a bit of work) but it was broken when we were there…but that just forced us to chill without devices when at our room…and just relax, read or chat instead (and there’s excellent fast wifi up at the hotel).

The restaurant doesn’t serve Pinot gris or Rose…just Chardonnay and Sav. So I’m glad we brought those duty free…but seriously, like, ‘first world problems’ right??

Mostly the staff were great, but there were quite a few times we requested stuff (condiments, drinks, food, equipment, activities, etc) that just never turned up so we had to ask multiple times, get it ourselves or do without…could have been a bit annoying but we didn’t let it get to us!

On the whole, this place is absolute paradise and I’d more than recommend it to friends…I’d love to go back one day.

When we left, we got our transfer to Nadi in a helicopter, which I’d 1000000% recommend! What a way to wrap up an epic holiday on the stunning Matamanoa Island.

Thanks to Patrick and team, we had a blast 😊😊😊

An amazing stay in paradise! The staff made us feel very welcome, including a welcome and goodbye song and the resort has everything you need for a relaxing stay. But the highlight is definitely the natural beauty of the island- just stunning. This is an adults only resort and rhwre are no day-trippers, so very peaceful indeed. Everything was very well organised, including the transfer to the ferry, excursions, etc. The breakfast included in the room rate was amazing and the pastry chef baked special gluten-free bread and pastry for me on request, which absolutely exceeded my expectations. The food was very good, although not cheap, but we appreciate the logistics of catering on an island. This was truly an amazing stay and we hope to be back again soon!

Arrived by helicopter from Nadi Airport. It’s a must to come in style. Only 7 minutes with great views of neighbouring islands. We didn’t have to endure 2 hours by boat like others on choppy waves. Stayed at one of the villas(53). Enjoyed quiet location of the island. Pictures of the beaches from internet are stunning, but when you get here it’s not what one expects. Half of the island beaches are covered with large stones, lava rocks virtually impossible to enter sea. That doesn’t really matter as you come here to relax. More than half of the staff employed here are in desperate need of training in customer service. It seemed to us that they don’t really want to be there. Often bored, spending endless time on their phones. Grumpy looking faces without any smile. One arrives for breakfast in the morning, 7 tables are waiting for the orders to be taken and yet staff are on the phone or standing somewhere in in corner ignoring everyone. Food often arrives cold. In desperate need of freshly ground pepper. Even thou we stayed in one of the most expensive villas cleaning lady would not come until well after 3 pm. Cheap rooms on the island would be always cleaned at 10 am.

This was our second visit to Matamanoa and I will start with the positives, as with our previous stay the resort and island are exceptional, beautiful sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, our beach front Bure with plunge pool was a delight, The staff were super friendly, and it was so nice that they made the effort to remember and greet us by our names, overall the stay was wonderful however there are some real negatives that have us really struggling with the possibility of a return visit.
Having only one restaurant the choice of food is quite limited and combined with the unavailability of a number of items from the menu we were super disappointed, on top of that prices are top end, I don't mind a high price if the quality matches however they fell down on numerous occasions, a few examples, having finished entrees we waited over an hour before chasing up our main course to be told it was on the way, my wife had a fish dish which she loved however my eye fillet which was ordered medium rare was served nearly raw and cold at a cost of $75FJD.
Another meal we ordered a side of fries ($20FJD) small serve and only partly cooked. Kokoda entree had large chunks of gristly fish that was nearly inedible, we returned more than half to the kitchen to be told by our waiter that he would eat the left overs, there were several other instances as well that I won't go in to,
The final disappointment is regarding smoking and vaping, I understand that this is allowed so as to not put off those who partake however a separate area as provided by the other resorts we stayed at should be in place. Also WIFI is only available in the main building and the luxury villas, given we were paying over $800 per night this is inexcusable.

Matamanoa is itself a lovely island. We stayed in the far side Villas which were high quality with a plunge pool, privacy and great views. Only a 5 min walk to the main area but you can request a buggy ride if need be. Note Villas still had no wifi connection. No issues with noisy birds as others mentioned (stayed late April so getting to the end of their season). Main pool and social areas are very nice. Food was hit and miss and if the wait staff had a system it wasn't obvious, with breakfasts particularly shambolic. Lunch was good value but dinner felt expensive for the amount you get. Water is definitely salty, suggest you buy bottled if they haven't run out. A few staff were great but overall not as friendly/helpful as the other places we stayed in Fiji. Band was awesome and a highlight. For snorkel buffs house reef and surrounds not of the same quality of the Yasawa's or other Fiji hot spots. If you want to book an activity do it well in advance! We waited until the blackboard was put up in the morning outlining the activities for the day but found they were all already booked out. Overall a good stay but not our favourite.

WONDERFUL! We are so glad we spent 4 nights/5 days on this truly fantastic little island. First up, we have absolutely no complaints. Matamanoa is exactly what you hope for in a picture perfect island (child free) resort. From the beachside welcome song to the farewell hugs we felt part of the Matamanoa staff family. Our super spacious garden bure was literally 30 seconds from the pool restaurant/pool area. Really comfortable king bed, very effective AC, nice walk in shower. The infinity pool was the centre of activity (or rather inactivity) as we (and others) chilled out on the poolside loungers occasionally slipping into the bath warm water for a refresh. When not chilling we were in the ocean. We saw sharks, squid and thousands of stunning fish when snorkelling off the beach straight in front of the resort. In addition the snorkel safari through Deep Blue was excellent value for money and we saw turtles, more sharks and the most stunning coral reef. I also did three scuba dives with Deep Blue operated by ex-pat Englishman Trev. Again awesome service, stunning dive sites and excellent value for money. Evening entertainment was provided by Alfred and three others on guitar. There was not a song they couldn't play and we had a blast dancing and singing to their wonderful music. The breakfast (included in fare) was massive and actually carried us through to dinner. The menu changed every night and there is also a vegetarian menu. We were totally blown away by the quality of our meals, particularly the fish dishes. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Matamanoa.

Bula, yes the boutique sells water and water is also available complimentary from our desalination plant. Other soft drinks available at the bar. Snorkelling anywhere on our reefs from the beach is fabulous, there are also daily snorkelling tours with Deep Blue our water sports operation franchisee. No reef shoes as it is not permitted to walk on our reef as it may damage the coral. Please reach out if you have any further questions, vinaka

Hi Brian, You can find the prices for the full/half board meal packagaes as well as sample lunch/dinner menus with prices, and prices for drinks, wine, and beer on the resort's website. Type Matamanoa Island Resort in your search bar, then click on dine. There is also information on the tours/activities with prices that you might find helpful. Hope this helps. Have a wonderful vacation at Matamanoa and enjoy your countdown till you arrive in paradise. Cathy
