I'm not going to dress it up - the accommodation was not great BUT staying here was definitely the most fun. There was no signal, no tv, no internet, it was literally how travelling should be. Everyone socialised, we played games, we went fishing, we had a bonfire, we made jewelry out of coconuts, we played volleyball, we went scuba diving. We made so many friends and everyone just embraced the experience. I'd go again tomorrow!

I am writing a review as honestly as I can, based on what I was told and what I witnessed at this backpackers. The backpackers does not deserve 5/10. There are some things you need to be aware of before you visit.
There were a number of thefts reported at this resort in the few days I was there.
The first theft was that a few guests needed cash. There is no cashpoint on the island. James offered to get cash from the main island for them and they gave him their cards and PIN numbers. He brought the cash back for them, but when they checked their accounts he had clearly stolen money from them. Apparently the chief banished him from the island, but as soon as some of the victims left the island, he returned. He then proceeded to socialise with the guests as if nothing had happened. A lot of the guests felt very uncomfortable making conversation with him knowing that he was a thief. I was also told it was not the first time it happened.that might explain why the victims signed a waiver form absolving the hostel of responsibility if any money went missing.
One of the guests had their Go Pro camera stolen from a dorm room. He had left it their to charge. It was a coincidence that James returned to the island that day.
The rest of the staff seemed nice, however I was disappointed that hey allowed James to return as if nothing had happened. The reported thefts made it difficult for me to engage and be friendly towards the staff. Tikka was the nicest and seemed to be the not trustworthy person there. He made a great effort to make sure everybody had an activity to do and were having fun.
The food was basic and a bit salty, but it was edible and there were good portions. For the price of the stay on a beautiful island, I can't complain too much about the food. You also got juice or water at mealtimes and tea for breakfast. They also served plenty of fruit with the meals. I appreciated the watermelon in the hot weather.
The rooms were very basic. Our room had a simple double with a foam (not memory foam) mattress. It was reasonably comfortable but our neighbours complained of a broken bed. The beds need updating.
Electricity is from 6pm - 6am so be prepare to get up early when your fan turns off at 6. It is hard to stay in the room after that.
The bathrooms were shared. They were dirty and didn't appear to be properly cleaned the whole time I was there. There was a stain on one of the walls of the toilet that was not cleaned for the whole time I was there. Let's just say it was very unhygienic. The shower is cold which is great in the heat and it is nice and powerful. The water often seemed to run out but if you pointed it out they would get it running again.
The location is fantastic. There are plenty of deck chairs and a large shaded area. The sea is clear and there is coral. There are great activities which were organised by Tika and they were free or reasonably priced.
A few tips: take lots of water and alcohol with you to the island. The tap water is not safe to drink and alcohol and bottled water is more pricy than the supermarkets on the main land.
Don't get me wrong, I had a great time on the island and did some great activities organised by the hostel, but there are definitely areas where the hostel needs to improve.
I hope they learn from this post and put guests before dishonest members of staff.

Expect to live SIMPLY. I thought the staff was awesome. The women were really nice and friendly and the entertainers were helpful, gave good insight, and were fun. I felt safe here, but listen to the staff when they tell you things because you are within the community. I stayed on a Wednesday to Saturday. On Friday night, Tofu and Filipe performed the best fireshow I've seen! This was a stunning island to relax, go diving, snorkeling, and volleyball by day and learn new card games and throw back a beer by night. Food portions were huge and I had a great time. If you expect to party or expect luxury, you simply won't get it. I think that's what a few customers expected on this trip but were misled by their mainland backpackers. It was a downer and a bit rude to hear other customers complain about mice and spiders when the staff live in the same conditions. I didn't have a problem with bed bugs, but some customers did. The staff did their best to address it. I advise that peopleare mindful on the beach too because there is a bit of glass all over the island. Overall, I had a good trip!

The backpacker's accommodations are very very basic and not budget-friendly for backpackers. Our room was at the front right on the beach which was a blessing because the back rooms are dingy and shared washrooms with the people who work and live there. The basic fan doesn’t help much with the heat at night, the room is very basic and to get to the toilet you have to step through the shower and that leaves your feet sandy 😄. Honestly, the owner needs to renovate big time and invest some money. I heard it had not been updated in 20+ years and that’s a long time in this climate. I’d say go buy some chairs at least so tourists can sit on the beach. The food was plenty and good with lots of carbs. We had fire dancers at night - super good and the whole village came to see. The Survivor movie night was also a hit by the locals. The travel agent Ateca is a relative of the Backpackers and was pushy for us to book here. The dingy boat that brought us to the island is also part of the deal. 3 days cost us $900 - that’s a lot considering it was like travelling back in time 30 + years ago.

We are 2 students and we have booked a return boat trip to Mana Island and a night at the Mana Lagoon hostel, for a return the next day at 11:30 am. The meeting is at 9:30 am in front of the bamboo travellers hostel in Nadi. At 10:00 am, the owner of the Mana lagoon hostel and the woman who is in charge of checking the tickets tell us that the boat is on its way. First lie. They told us several times that it will arrive in 30 minutes. We finally left at 12:30 ! The worst thing is that we learned from other hostel residents that it is not a simple setback, but that the boat is late every day by several hours, up to 5 hours late. Ineligible for the price paid. We asked the owner of the hostel who was with us if it was possible to leave 2.30 pm later the next day. He said he would do his best. During the day, we talked to him again and he said we would see tomorrow. The next day, at 9:30 a.m., we are told that we have to hurry because the boat is at 10:00 a.m. So we went to see the boss who told us that he never said that the boat would leave at 2 o'clock, that he pays a lot for our return trip by boat and that he loses money because of us. He said also that we are disrespectful and that he would cancel our return boat and we would just have to make our way back to Nadi. He also insulted us in Fijian. All because we were asking to get the service we payed so much for... We finally had to take this boat and we only enjoyed an afternoon on the island. So I would advise you to maybe go through the Ratu Kini hostel, whose boats to and from the island were about right on time. You can also negotiate, we got for example the return boat trip at 140$ (normally 180$) and the room at 30$ (normally 35$ and meals compulsory at 35$). I would rather advise you to go to islands served by local ferries such as Ovalau, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. The prices are 5 times cheaper and the relationship with the locals is much more authentic. These islands are also beautiful.

For what you get, it’s expensive. I was in a dorm, the electricity and water were cut off so often. If you want the wifi it’s 5$ but most of the time it l didn’t work. The bathroom is a shame, one night a guy vomit in the sink and the vomit stayed there for about 3 days, even if the owner knew that. I’ve never seen a more dirty place, nobody cleans it. The food seemed good, but very oily, fewer options and after some days I was in need of some vegetables and fruit. What make this place fantastic is the people, there’s a pretty party vibes, full of locals all the time. But if you are not a party person, be aware of the fact that some days there can be the music till the morning (8am) ;) Mana lagoon is an experience for sure

I have been in Fiji for almost 8 months, for an extended, get away from Covid, vacation. When I arrived, I spoke to many people looking for long term, reasonably priced accommodation. Unfortunately I was introduced to Manoua, the owner of Mana Lagoon backpakers . Manoua comes accross as very genuine & very religious, so I did not expect him to be the snake he turned out to be. I asked many questions about the accommodation & was told everything I expected would be there. I was lied to....mostly lies, but 3 were deal breakers, air-conditioning, clean accommodation & assurance on steady electricity. I was also asked to pay up front, to lock in the price because they were getting a lot of bookings...this also turned out to be a lie. On the very first day of arrival, no aircon, room was filth (especially the bathroom that had no shower head as well) & and was advised the electricity would be turned off for 12hrs a day. Manoua also advised me on the first day that if I was asked,I was to tell other people on the island that I worked for him & I was not a guest. He advised me that they were not allowed to have guests until July 17 due to Covid restrictions (it was January!!) I advised Manoua of my concerns & that I would not be able to stay, because this put my visa at risk. I could have be kicked out of the country & never allowed to return. Manoua said he understood & would refund me my money.I returned to Viti Levu next day. Manoua is not returning my calls, to get my money back

I was meant to stay here for only 3 nights but I loved it so much and kept extending for more then a week. Yes, the rooms are basic but why would you need more? You will not spend any time there. All the staff is lovely and will make you feel at home. They serve all local food which is very tasty plus they are very accommodating if you have any dietary needs. There's a lot of (free) activities around. Mos will take you on a village tour including school visit, medicine walk and he will get you a fresh coconut which is all free of charge! He and some others also do a traditional dance + fire show on certain nights. Definitely go to cloud 9, castaway or do island hopping as you will see so much more of the surroundings, you won't regret it.
I was sad to leave this place, hopefully I can come back one day and spent more time with my Fijian family!

Like many place in Fiji, and indeed around the world Mana Bula is recovering f from the pandemic. It has undergone many changes since it's heyday years ago. Right now you will find them done their best to build up again, with attentive service and great food. Yes, the rooms are basic, but clean. It's a beautiful place with plenty of things to do. I will be back

I had such a great time at mana lagoon.. that I skipped going to beachcomber (still had to pay for those rooms on top of the two extra nights at mana lagoon) and stayed for an extra two nights! This was my first solo trip.. but as soon as I stepped foot off the boat, I felt welcomed! Mos, Jimmy, the ladies behind the bar, the chef, the locals.. everyone was so kind and fun company! The rooms are basic.. and the power goes off during the day.. but you don’t need it! You should be out exploring the beautiful things that mana lagoon offers! Or just relax and enjoy the beach, hike up to the view point, snorkel and the other side of the island off the rocks.. your options are endless! I can’t wait to go back one day!
