My wife and I recently holidayed in Fiji with our daughter, son in law and four grandchildren. We stayed at a delightful house on the small island of Malolo Lai Lai, situated about 15 ks west of Nadi.
The privately owned house is called REEF HOUSE and is located adjecent to Musket Cove Resort. The beauty of staying in Reef House, was that we were totally independant, yet were able to use all the facilities of the resort. Best of both worlds.

Reef House is completely self contained, and even had fishing gear, all conveniences, and even bicycles for guests to use.
We had a wonderful holiday, with plenty of room for the 8 of us.
We were able to hire a village boat and spent the day doing a "resort crawl" around the larger Malolo Island.
We would thoroughly recommend any family, or several couples staying at the REEF HOUSE for an unforgettable Fijian holiday.
The rooms are serviced daily, which also adds to the relaxed holiday experience.
We obtained supplies at the well stocked store very close by, and were totally self sufficient, yet at times, ate at the several good restaurants at the resort. A very unique property.

Vinaka Brian, sounds like you had a wonderful family gathering at Reef House. Amy and I do really enjoy so much getting these lovely reports back from guests. We are making improvements to the house each year and appreciate any suggestions to make family holidays more enjoyable. This year we have added four new beach loungers and new outside deck furniture. Thanks again, and look forward to keeping in touch. Vinaka Vakalevu, Grant & Amy Ingram.

From the moment we got to Malololailai and Musket cove we felt at home. We were greated by Vika in the golf buggy, Vika drove us around the resort pointing out the places we needed to know about and then took us to the house and showed us around. The house can sleep 8 comfortably but with just my wife and myself and our 3 kids the house was a great size.
The house comes with a house keeper (Vukei) who comes everyday to do the beds, the dishes, mop the floors but best of all to be our friend. Vukei is from Malolo island and walks over everyday between the islands, mostly at low tide but a couple of days the water was over waist deep.
We walked up to the Malolo school at Solevu (45 minutes each way )and donated school supplies as well as sporting equipment, the principle (master philipo) was absolutely over the moon and invited our 3 kids to come back and spend a day doing classes at the school, which they did and had a fantastic day. They were picked up the the boat at musket cove at 6.45 by the very funny Loti and taken to school and returned home by boat at 3.30. My wife and I had a day to ourselves and paddled to the sand bar for some snorkeling, while we were there there was a wedding taking place, what a great setting..
Each day we would do the 2 free snorkels on the days we were not doing other trips, these were fantastic, so many fish , we would take some bread to the sand bar snorkel and feed the fish and you would be surrounded by thousands of all types of fish. Everyday there would be the sand bar trip and also a deep water snorkel trip, this trip changed everyday.
The house comes with everything you could need to self cater, it comes with bikes to get around the island, we rode these everywhere, it woiuld take about 3 miniutes to get to the boat bure 4 minutes to reception and 8 minutes of easy riding to go to plantation. We had 2 days and nights of rain and even this was no problem, the house has a dvd player and video player and some discs at the house, the reception has quite a few dvd's and videos you can free hire, a deposit of $20 is required which is booked to your room, when the movie is returned it comes off the bill. On the nights it rained we would ring reception and they would send down the van to pick us up to take us for dinner. Thanks Bonny. You can order beer at Dicks place for F$66 per carton and take it back to the house for afternoon drinks overlooking the water. From this spot you can see the sunset and also the workers walking or boating back to their villages after working at the resorts on the island. We did the island hopping trip which took us to treasure, beachcomber, mana and castaway islands. Walter and Joe (crew) made the day memorable for us.
We also did the dolphin safari with dave and judy on take a break catermaran, it was a bit blowy and no dolphins but was still a great day out.with a couple of snorkels. We did the shell village trip to buy some necklaces etc for gifts and then down to the wood carving village where we bought a great hand carved work of art.
Vukei brought her 4 kids and some of their friends over to the house on both Saturdays we were there for a bit of fun. On the middle Sunday we were invited to go to the village church service (all in Fijian, the singing was unbelievable) and then had lunch with Vukei, her husband Bully and their kids and assorted friends, what an awesome day, the kids are still talking about this.
The house is associated with Musket cove and for F$35 per adult per week you can use all the facilities. Musket cove itself has great staff and always made our family feel welcomed, thanks to Lithey, Mary, Marianne etc. The pool has a lap section which we used a bit.
We ate at annandas and plantation a couple of times each, the kids went to watch the movie at plantation after dinner while we had a drink, there is plenty of variety of places to eat. We ate brekky and dinner mostly in the house to cut down on costs, we bought food from both the trader and annandas supermarket which wasn't too expensive.
All up this was the best holiday we have ever had, we had planned don going to NZ next year, however a family decision was made even before we had left the island was to return to the reef house again next year. The house is a bit of a walk( we always rode) from the resort itself but this made it very quiet.
A big Vinaka to all the staff at Musket Cove, Vukei and her family and also thanks to Grant and Amy (owners of the house) for the opportunity to stay in the house and experience not just a resort holiday but a bit of Fiji culture as well.
Steely.

Well what can i say!!! This home is definately a home away from home. Fabulously well appointed house that leaves you wanting for nothing. My husband, myself and my little girl absolutely loved our stay on Malolo Lai Lai and loved the Reef House. A great home situated in a lovely spot with all of Musket Cove Resort's great amenities at your finger tips.
Vukei (the housekeeper) was so lovely and helpful and we enjoyed a great visit to her village.
Musket Cove Resort Staff were exceptional especially for Babysitting.
The warm smiles, the lovely resort facilities and the gorgeous private beach at the back of The Reef House were just fantastic and well used. A wonderful holiday and definate must do to put on your list. Grant and his family have really thought of everything to make their house guests feel welcome. Thankyou Grant and Family for allowing us to share your piece of paradise. A great family holiday!!!!We will be back and hopefully sooner than we think!!!

Congratulations!!!

With Regards,

Clare, Brett and Sascha Thorne

This review is of course connected with Musketcove resort, as a partner to the reefhouse. It shows a part of our personal experience during our stay.

The owner is Grant Ingram from NZ and he is really dedicated to make you happy in his house, which is under maintenance of the Musketcove resort (like other villas to rent and to own) and of course you have to pay for your stay. The house is surrounded by two other houses and still in the flat area. The house itself offers the most needed accessories, we only missed a strong tin-opener and the pump for the bike tyres had the wrong size. There are some bicycles, which are definitely necessary to reach everything on the island. One service-guy took the needed bikes on his truck to his workshop and filled them up within a few minutes! sure in a salty surrounding the materials show some abrasions.
The drinking water is rain-water from a plastic-tank.
There have been some big mothes in the house when we arrived, maybe coming through some chinks. Not that problem. Vukei the housekeeper is nice.
The trader shop has some vegetables and fruits, but be aware of the zucchinis: 20,- per kilo! The rest is much cheaper. The beach is very tidal. There are some sports included with the white-card.
It is a location easy to reach from Nadi by the MaloloCat 50min-4times-daily, stopping first at plantation resort. As far as I have read, air pacific sun has cancelled now the routes with the smaller aircrafts.
The low season was good, not many people around and on the boat.

And I don’t want to hide our cons we had/saw:
· The reservation lady was unable to make a firm reservation within 14 days! between the resort, Mr.Ingram and me. Mrs. K. (I don’t write private names, if they don’t know it) from Sales Management helped out very professional. We also appreciated the offered compensation. Before that, I considered to go somewhere else! she had been having computerproblems, I was told later.
· Arriving at the wharf in denarau at MaloloCat-office, our names were missed for the confirmed FOB-transfer. The lady at the office was hard to convince. Understandable. I pleased her to call Musket, but at 07:00 am is nobody in his office. I offered to use my USB-stick with the data, but no PC there. Fortunately after 20min. she let us pass., Mrs. K. (one of the best staff) met us after arrival and provided a free breakfast to make amends, as well as for the next point.
· Arriving at musket, I asked for the safe deposit box I have been told from Mr.Ingram. The first answer was: we don’t have a safe, only a wooden cabinet. So it took another hour waiting for the manager Mr. J.. I had to explain, that the owner doesn’t wish to use his safe in the reefhouse and that there should be a safe at the reception! (the same is written on the safe in the reefhouse!). so after a while nevertheless, there existed a safe deposit box at the reception, which is in use for the reception! So we have been the first couple asking for that???
· The snorkelling-trips to the sandbank and The Black Rock are a good idea, but the corals are 90% dead and not plenty of fish. Not a fault of the resort.
· the marina is rather big, 2 Malolo-Cats and even tanker for the support of fuels approach.
· When you follow the smoke on the end of the airstrip to the left, you will see that they burn up many things. Well, like in so many other countries. Maybe there is soon a high fence around with signs “keep out – private property”.
· We had to leave early at 05:45am with the first boat. That was necessary to reach our next boat-transfer. So I got some promises from reception Mrs. L., that the porter will come in time to pick us up. I told them, please at 05:15!
so what do you think happened: no ,nothing! Fortunately there was an emergency number to call from the house. At 05:35 (10 minutes before departure!) somebody arrived. In the light i could see it was the manager himself...(obviously waking him up).
Sure you are shocked, when you need something in time. Especially at this “night”time and nobody around for help! Still waiting for an apology.

With the Musket compensations it was quite even at the end. But it nerved. Mr.Ingram is far away in NZ, depending on the staff provided.

We arrived on MaloloCat from Denarau within 55 minutes. A plus is the short transfer from Nadi to Denarau and Malolo Lailai. The sea was a bit rough, but the warm fijian smiles at MusketCove compensated that. We were taken around to see the most important places. The resort itself is beautiful and the staff friendly there.
Musket Cove has a laid-back atmosphere, the Armstrong Island Villas, the bures and the private Villas are built for the wealthier ones. The price level looks like that.

Now to the house:
It’s a quite good location, but the garden around the house looks poor ,not tidy. The house itself is a bit aged and could need some new paint.
My husband and i were afraid about the rusty bikes, especially fearing their brakes!
Sure the equipment in the house is plentiful, but some are as rusty as the bikes. And the compartments could need a cleanup.
Overall we weren’t disappointed, but also not that excited. Just a breezy holiday for a few days.

My husband and myself plus three adult friends stayed here for ten relaxing days and they "were relaxing". We loved riding the bikes to the shop, bars and restaurants, felt like we were kids again!! James the grounds man kept them in good repair (he also will gather & cook a wonderful land crab meal at the house} The bedrooms are a good size, each guest having their own space if needed and the ensuite in the master bedroom is a big bonus. A 20 second walk up the back of the property give you beautiful sea views, lovely to watch the sun rise and/or set. We spent a fair time in the comfortable hamocks on the extremely generous deck on the couple of days the weather wasn't fine. All-in-all a lovely place to holiday and we would recomend it!

Our family stayed at reef house in June 2011 for my sister's wedding. This was our first time hiring a private house, and we loved it. Having all the baby equipment was fantastic, and staying in a house is so much nicer and more functional than staying in a hotel room or villa- particularly with kids.

Grant, the owner of the house, was wonderful with providing us with information before we left and answering our questions via email. We knew exactly what to expect when we got there and could pack appropriately.

Musket Cove resort was great! We loved having the marina at the resort and made good use of it with numerous day trips. The beach sports equipment had an excellent range with hobie cats, paddle boards, sea kayaks and snorkelling equipment to name a few. Our 3 year old spent the whole time in the resort pool or in the beach. She loved it!

Vukei the housekeeper at reef house was great. She even babysat for us a few times.  We walked with her over to her village and met her youngest son, and our daughter played with her 3 year old daughter.

Because we were worried about the kids, the mosquitos and the intense sun made us use the porters more often than we thought we would. It was fine most of the time, just a few times we had to wait for a while when the porter was meeting people off the cat. The times we didn't have the kids we really enjoyed the walk to and from the resort. It isn't far and is quite relaxing not to use motorized transport all the time!

The boys played a lot of golf, we went for a run around the island a few times, took the hobie cats and paddle boards out and went on a snorkeling cruise on "take a break", which we loved. Dave was fantastic and even our 3 year old jumped off the back off his boat to snorkel while our 8 month old slept in one of the cabins downstairs!  Loved the pig on the spit night and preferred dick's place to anandas restaurant. Day spa wrap was lovely for me and my mum went to plantation island for a $35 massage which she said was good.

The sunsets were just spectacular. We left very reluctantly after our 10 day break already planning our next trip back to musket cove and reef house.

Thanks again for all your emails with tips and advice. It was very much appreciated!

Our stay at Reef House Malolo Lailai Island was awesome, the house was fantastic – very well equipped and beautifully decorated, a perfect combination of Kiwi & Fijian Bach – a place that you feel comfortable kicking off your jandals, and relaxing. This was our first stay at Reef House, but we have previously stayed at Plantation Island and Musket Cove, we opted to stay at Reef House as having a 19 year old daughter and 21 year old son – we felt we needed the space and our children didn’t really want to share a room which was the only option at the Resorts - what a fantastic and wise choice for us.

As mentioned above, it was very refreshing to go to a holiday home that was quipped with everything you need, too often you go away and stay in a self contained unit or holiday home and the equipment in the house is inadequate to cope with ay to day family life, but no such problems at Reef House. Location was perfect, not to far away from Musket Cove Resort – but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of other people, the bikes were an absolute asset and we had so much fun cycling around and exploring the island – we decided we would do more cycling when we got back to NZ – unfortunately we haven’t stuck to this promise and its back into the car.

Vukei is lovely and it was great to talk to her about her life. Unfortunately for us, the first 2 and a half days we were in Fiji we were waiting for a cyclone to hit (only we would pick to go on holiday on a tropical island during the wet season) so weren’t allowed to brave the outdoors for too long (in fact our son was stranded in Nadi as he couldn’t get to Musket Cove for the first couple of days). Once the weather came right we were learning to dive for 3 days – so really only had a day free, which didn’t give us enough time to go to Vukeis village for dinner (we will definitely do this next time we visit). Vukei worked hard the whole time we were there and it was lovely to come back to a clean tidy house when we had been away for the day.

The staff at Musket Cove were lovely (as usual) and were very helpful when we were trying to sort our sons transport and stay in Nadi when the Malolo Cat was cancelled due to the storm, always accommodating and happy to assist. Actually my husband was amused as some of the staff (in the spa and restaurant) recognized our daughter and me from our stay 2 years previously (scary).

Anyway I could rave on forever, but I don’t really want to bore you, all I really need to say is that Reef House is a perfect spot for a Family Holiday (thank you these times are becoming very precious to our family as our children become adults and go in search of adventures without their parents). It was a very special time for us and we appreciate being able to share your piece of paradise, thank you so very much. We feel that Reef House will become a very favourite holiday destination of ours.

This is our third time to Malolo lai lai first time at Musket and Reef House.
Well what a time we had! As far us the Reef House it was lovely to move over from Plantation with two young children and two teenagers and be able to spread out and cook our own food and enjoy the wonderful home comforts!! It's set up is just like the much loved kiwi bach with loads of great books to read & a fully stocked kitchen, bbq, an awesome outdoor living eara and thier own water tank...so no need to have to buy the bottled water!
It’s a beautiful spot surounded by frangipani trees in full blossom, coconut palms and the beach at your doorstep. My husband and I both loved standing up the top of the house section looking out over the reef to the pacific trying to decipher the weather and enjoying the trade winds. Our youngest daughters loved hunting for hermit crabs to whistle out of there shells and sea snails, biking down to Plantation kids club and doing lots of snorkelling . The weather was great until the last 4 days, lots of rain but luckily had already done a lot of activities like island hopping where there was some amazing snorkelling at honeymoon island to be had and a beautiful lunch at Malolo!
The housekeeper was great, her cleaning times varied with the tides which was totally fine with us as the house was always lovely to come home to at the end of the day and her eldest son was on school hols so took my husband out spear fishing, he returned with three fish for our dinner and we paid him for his hard earned work!
The bikes….they are so fantastic and a necessity that far up the island when you're back and forth as much as we were! The ralieigh 20 was perfect for our 7 yr old and our 4 yr old loved being 'dubbed' everywhere.
I just love those Fijian people they are amazing and the staff at Musket were wonderful warm and very helpful, sure things dont happen at the snap of your fingers because of the relaxed way of life they lead....but isnt that why we all go to Fiji - for some lovely warm welcoming 'Fiji Time' pace of live - away from the pressures of our own fast living complicated lifes????
All the information we recieved from Grant was so helpful and made it all the more exciting to organise. We will definately return to the reef house!!
Thanks so much for all your help Grant and Amy you have a magic spot and are great hosts!!

We are a family of 5 with kids aged 11, 11 and 13, This was our second time to the Reef House and this was possibly better than the first. We love the freedom of being in a self contained house and still being able to use all of Musket Cove's facilities. The bikes are a huge hit with us all, be it cruising to the restaurant or to the daily snorkelling trips or down to the supermaket for some more food or to the bar for some Fiji bitter. Our kids were invited to go to the school in Solevu for the day so my wife and myself rode to Lomani for a really nice lunch.
The last time we were at the Reef House (through the house keeper Vukei) we met alot of the villagers from the carving village on Malolo. This time we felt very comfortable walking to the village at low tide to spend time with them. On the Saturday before we left we invited Vukei and her kids over for lunch, she said there may be a couple of others as well. I was sitting on the deck when I heard some singing and laughing, then from around the corner came Vukei and about Fijian 25 kids. We spend the few hours with them and it was great, I made alot of sandwiches that day!
The house has everything you need to self cater and with 2 little supermarkets on the island it works very well.
The 2 daily snorkelling trips a day with Lote are great, we took a dolphin safari ( no dolphins that day) which took us out to cloud break surf reef where we snokelled in some incredible pristine water, we went parasailing another day and other days just lazed around. You can do as little or as much as you want.
We love it.
