The Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder garners praise for its comfortable and spacious rooms, though some guests have encountered cleanliness issues and maintenance problems such as faulty AC units. While the art exhibits are a highlight for many, opinions on amenities are divided due to understaffing and non-operational hot tub jets. Dissatisfaction with service is a common theme, with reports of unmet requests and inadequate follow-up. The hotel's atmosphere is generally well-received; however, some areas are flagged as needing an update. Additionally, there are concerns regarding value for money, with some guests feeling the high costs are unjustified by the level of service and available amenities.

The hotel is beautiful and the room was large and included a balcony with a beautiful view and a fireplace. Beds were super comfy and we slept well. We only ate at the Iguana, dinner and breakfast. They were very understaffed, as it seems everywhere these days are, but the service was good and the food was good. Large casino with a lot of different games. I didn't see any table games, just slots. My one complaint - upon making my reservation, I made a note that I needed a feather free room due to severe allergies (I do this everywhere I stay except for Drury as they are feather free as a rule). Driving into Santa Fe I called to confirm room was feather free and was told by the desk clerk he would assign my room prior to arrival and assured me it would be feather free. Upon check in, I again asked about the room being feather free and the desk clerk said it was a note on my reservation and he assured me it was completed and the room was feather free. I asked if he was who I spoke to earlier and he said yes and "I made sure the room was feather free." Upon entering the room, I checked pillows and comforters. ALL FEATHER DOWN! I cannot believe this type of service. I could have ended up in the ER if I had not checked. We called downstairs and they apologized and said they would have housekeeping come right away to change out the bedding. We saw housekeeping a few doors down and she said she had just received the text and had not been notified before that. She was extremely apologetic and came immediately to exchange the bedding while we went downstairs. I would hope that such a nice hotel would be apt to cater to guest's needs. Other than that fiasco, I would definitely recommend. Just double check any specific requests.

The good: The employees! Everyone we encountered here (with the exception of 1 bell person) was absolutely fantastic! Everyone had a smile on their face and was very pleasant to interact with. The casino dealers were more than willing to help you understand the table games and give you tips along the way which is really great for those of us who live in non gambling states. The casino itself was very clean and kept at a comfortable degree. They were not trying to freeze you like most casinos. You didn't even need a jacket! I cant say enough good things about the casino! The Red Sage bar was excellent, the bartender made our drinks perfectly and we really enjoyed them!
The average: The restaurants. They were all just average nothing to really gush about. The Turquoise trail we had the burgers and they were just a burger. We also ate at the Deli and it was just that.. a deli. I will say this about the Club sandwich at the deli they really piled on the meats! That one sandwich is more than enough for 2 people. We didn't try the Red Sage because it was just too expensive and based on our lackluster experiences as the other 2 restaurants we were not willing to take a chance on it.
The Bad: The 1 bell person (older gentleman) was just rude. He really didn't want to let us use the luggage cart and only let us take it with a promise to return it which we did. He gave us about 10 minutes before he started ringing our room demanding it back. We hadn't even gotten everything off of it yet! He was just very annoyed with us from the beginning. For a "4 star" resort, He should have been taking our luggage up to the room and taking his precious luggage cart back with him.
The room: We booked a King Junior Suite which is what we got and it is very spacious. We enjoyed the extra room since we were staying 3 nights. It is disappointing to me that you have to ask for housekeeping-its not provided unless you let them know a day in advance but they will bring fresh towels if you ask them to. The bed was very uncomfortable and the décor and furniture in the room is VERY outdated. They should really spend some money and start updating the furniture in the rooms. It looks like its from the 80's! The leather? vinyl? pleather? easy chair in our room was split open in multiple places and the couch was horribly faded. There were 2 showers in our room- not sure why but that was ok. The bathroom was very spacious so was pleasantly surprised there.

Overall: Great employees, Average boring restaurants, Outdated room furnishings. Would I pay $270 a night again? NO. Not until the hotel is reimagined with updated furnishings and better restaurants.

We recently stayed at the Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe and, unfortunately, my experience was far from what we expected. Here are the issues we encountered during our stay:

1. Misleading Information About Food Credit: Upon checking in on Thursday, we were told we had an overall daily food credit of $50 to use at the resort's restaurants or Starbucks. However, on Friday, when we tried to use it for breakfast, we were informed that the credit was actually only $40 and could only be used for breakfast. This created a lot of confusion as every person at the front desk gave us a different story regarding how to use this credit. As a result, we couldn't use our credit as planned because Starbucks was closed and we didn’t have time for a sit-down breakfast due to our packed itinerary.

2. Unclean Room: When we entered our room on Thursday, we found multiple strands of long black hair on the bathroom wall. We immediately called the front desk, but all we got was a simple "okay." There was no urgency to address the issue or any concern about why the bathroom was not properly cleaned. This made us question the overall cleanliness and integrity of the room preparation.

3. Room Service Issues: On Friday, we requested our room to be turned around. Upon our return, we found the air conditioning turned off, the temperature set to 75°, and the room smelling musty. We called the front desk to question why the cleaners altered our thermostat settings, but we only received a vague response that "someone will follow up." Additionally, one of our bags, which contained electronics, was found open despite being left closed. This raised concerns about privacy and the handling of our belongings.

4. Pool and Locker Room Cleanliness: When we went to use the pool and hot tub one evening at 8pm, there were no clean towels available. Instead, wet towels were strewn all over the place, indicating that the women's locker room had not been cleaned in quite some time.

5. Unhygienic Conditions: While sitting in the jacuzzi area, we noticed rotting bananas in the corner. The state of the bananas suggested that they had been there for an extended period, reflecting poorly on the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.

Overall, for a hotel that labels itself a diamond resort, this experience was far from spectacular. We are still awaiting a follow-up from the hotel regarding our concerns, which adds to our disappointment.

I was told by a reliable employee of the casino that at its peak there were 660 employees and now there are 300. The understaffing is palpable throughout the facility. The sports bar closed at 5 pm on July 4. The boars head sandwich shop was closed that day. The Starbucks was essentially closed. People are paying resort prices and discovering that much of the resort's amenities are understaffed and/or closed. Loyal reward gamblers at the property have seen their comps reach a new low. This is apparently as a result of declining revenues. The Biden stimulus checks dried up and so did the crowds at this resort. Now, those rewards players left are being nickel and dimed by the casino manager Bailey, and finding that suites are no longer an option, dining certainly has deteriorated and the resort experience is collapsing. The servers complain that the management treats them poorly. I want to add that it also treats its players poorly now with inadequate comps. Players need to go to the competitors who provide better gaming comps and hotel guests should go to a resort that is adequately staffed. There are many other options in Santa Fe alone.

This was our first stay at a Hilton property and we had high expectations for a 4 star experience. The overall appearance of the hotel is very nice outside and common areas inside are very well maintained and the location is great for any sightseeing itineraries. The rooms are clean with a nice Santa Fe décor but they are ready for some updating. Our biggest disappointment was from the service, some staff, and lack of amenities. Restaurants and bars have limited hours and there is no alcohol served, or more importantly, allowed in the casino. While we understand that we are recovering from a pandemic, the prohibition of alcohol while gambling just doesn't make sense. Drinks, sold at a premium ($7) just for a beer, in bars inside the casino must be consumed before stepping through the doorway to gamble. Most of the staff is rude and often avoiding eye contact to escape engagement with the customer. My husband and I sat patiently for 15 minutes at the "Red Sage Restaurant Bar" before being acknowledged. The bartender (1 of 3), finally said he would be with us in a moment, and then was told by the manager to help another customer at the table behind us. When we told the manager we had been waiting for over 15 minutes and if we could get service, his response was "Are you from out of town, we are in a Pandemic and have a hard time getting help". First of all, most people staying at hotels are probably from "out of town" so I am not sure what his point was but I am a principal in a school and fully understand the stress managers are under, BUT any good manager would have rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help. Perhaps asking us for our drink order, instead of scolding us in front of other customers would have been a better response! At that point, we just left and walked downstairs to the TURQUOISE TRAIL BAR & GRILL, where we were immediately served with a smile and first class service which was a pleasant end to our evening. The housekeeping staff were also fantastic and always greeting us with a smile. But overall, the experience was not what we had hoped for and just will not be enough for us to return for another stay. We really did expect more from a Hilton property.

After a beautiful day at Ojo Caliente, I decided to get dolled up, get some dinner and drinks, and spend some money playing casino games.

We arrived at 10 pm, and the front desk said restaurants and drinks were still available, we got up to the room, decided not to change, and went down to the bar and they said they were closed, we then went to the "restaurant" which was a snack bar with two items left, again, two items left, they were both PRE-MADE FRITO PIES, seeing we are both from New Mexico, (I now reside in Austin) my friend was trying to take me out to a nice evening at the "beautiful" casino, so we both know that you don't pre-make Frito pies. Also, we couldn't even get drunk enough to eat those nasty-looking pre-made pies. Our options were none!

So, with no food and no drinks, why stay?
So, we went up to our room and immediately checked out. We did speak to the front desk about their misleading comments about everything being open, and get no customer service, you'd expect paying over $200 a night they'd at least be pleasant and understand the role in hospitality.

My friend contacted managers, Ken Trujillo and Sandra Dominguez, never to get a call or email returned.

We are very dissatisfied with the misleading, disrespectful management and rude hospitality staff of this casino.

Please, feel free to contact me, I cannot believe we had to drive to Santa Fe and find a place to eat, drink, and sleep.

I cannot believe management still hasn't reached out, we have been back to Ojo twice and found other arrangements to stay at with respect and hospitality!

Spent 2 nights here and wished it had been a week! Had a lovely 2 room suite that was HUGE! It wasn't that much more in price than a 1 BR room and well worth it. 1.5 baths and both had plenty of room to move around. The LR area has an oversized wetbar and the bedroom had loads of storage space and even a dressing room type nook. The balcony was also oversized with beautiful views of the mountains. At night the room was dark and so very, very quiet. Had the best night sleep here of my entire trip. The outdoor pool area has a lovely and refreshing pool and the hot tub could hold about 10 people in it (although we always had it to ourselves). Had breakfast each morning and found the 7$ All American to have huge portions and be of good quality. All in all a very good value. (Just don't order the "fruit plate". That was nothing more than a small bowl of melon. It needs to come off the menu.) Masks were required in the casino, which at first seemed a downer, but then I realized it meant no one was allowed to smoke! Fantastic!! (Obviously I'm not a smoker) It was great to spend a few hours each day in the casino and not feel like I was short of breath or in need of a shower to get rid of stale smoke odor. The casino should stay that way even after COVID ends!! Santa Fe is a quick 10 - 15 min down the road. Some people might not like this, but for me that type of ride to get to excellent restaurants is nothing. I'm quite used to that back home. If you need lots of variety everyday its a short ride to town and yet you can come back to sleep and relax in a very picturesque and quiet location. LOVED IT! I want to return soon!!!!

I had made a reservation for a king room with a balcony about a month before my stay and was confirmed that I had that room. I checked in at 4:25pm and went to my room and it was two queen size beds and the furniture was so ratty. The chair was all torn up. It was not very clean. I called and asked why I didn’t get the room I had reserved. I was told they have the right to change the rooms around at their discretion and I said you know I spend a lot of money at this casino and I don’t very often even ask for a room so I was very disappointed in the room. It was shabby and didn’t seem very clean and the guy that I was talking to said well you know you’re welcome to just check out. And I said well I won’t be gambling here anymore!

Terrible experience…. Seems like this would taint the Hilton reputation….

We enjoyed our "couples" trip to Buffalo Thunder and wouldn't hesitate to return in the future. Upon check in, we found our room to be clean and in good condition. We were initially given a room on the 2nd (ground level floor) with a view of the parking lot and located next to several rooms occupied by a very happy but noisy family. After a return trip to the front desk, we were immediately relocated to a higher floor that offered a nice balcony view of the pool area and the hills in the distance. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the balcony throughout our stay. Our room was clean and in good order. Housekeeping was prompt to bring toiletries and fresh towels when requested. We enjoyed the Towa golf course on property, the outdoor pool area (attended with towels/bottled water during the day), and the casino during our stay. We found all to be very well maintained. The only downside to our stay was the reduced hours and menus offered by the on property restaurants. We were prepared for this because Hilton sent us an email notice prior to our stay and of course there are recent reviews on Trip Advisor. The hotel gave us a list of all the property and nearby restaurants with their current operating hours upon check in. We did eat at Red Sage on property one evening. While the menu was limited, what we ordered was good and service was prompt and friendly. We also ordered from the Starbucks and the casino deli during our stay. It was apparent that like many places, the area businesses are struggling to find employees. We noticed reduced hours at area fast food and gas stations too. We appreciated the friendly service at Buffalo Thunder and found the resort to be a great home base to visit Bandelier National Monument, the nearby Black Mesa Golf Club, and the sites and restaurants of Santa Fe. We would happily stay here again.
