I am totally enchanted by the warmth and hospitality of this golf destination. The Cottage was spacious and had a garden in front with a view of the golf course. The food was very delicious at 3 specialized restaurants and most reasonable. Unlimited fun activities to choose from like riding swimming golf library shopping. Enjoyed !!

Great place. Charm is golf course. You can sit in restaurant and just admire its beauty even if you are non player. The place is good for personal parties. There are two to three options. Food is good. Don't miss prawn kebabs. Highly recommended.

A large group of us stayed here in Jan 05 for a wedding. The accomodation varies between quite large "suites" beside the golf course to smaller rooms in the main building. I stayed in the former, with a small living room with table and chairs and a very spacious double bedroom with a basic shower and toilet. The standards are not exactly 5 star but it was ok, the shower in particular had a mind of its own and was very noisy. The food was ok, occasionally very spicy without warning. I recommend the Masala Dosa for breakfast.
The grounds are extensive (18 hole golf course) and very picturesque. There is an outdoor (freezing) and an indoor pool plus massage, tennis, snooker etc to do if you don't play golf. If you do play golf, the caddy's will retrieve your wayward ball and tee it up for you on a small mound of grass unless you stop them, or maybe that was just because we were so bad. The sight of 7 yr old boys running round on the driving range collecting the balls wearing hard hats will stay with me forever, try not to hit them.
One complaint is the service. Whereas the room service was always prompt and very polite, the service in the pavillion for breakfast was shocking. Just ordering your tea could take 1/2 hr. The Tollygunge has a no tipping policy, however noone seems to have told the staff, who will try their best to get tips from new guests.

All in all I liked the Tollygunge, it was a beautifully peaceful place to stay in the chaos of Kolkata, but if you're looking for luxury, the Oberoi would be better.

You need to know a member of the club to book one of the rooms. We stayed here as a family of 5 as a base to visit family etc. We were a bit wary after reading some of the other trip advisor reviews - some were complimentary, others not so! (this review is a positive one)

Our room was large and air conditioned (cottage style ground floor room - though i understand hotel style rooms are available too in a separate block and on other floors) We had a large double bed and 2 single beds in the same room. Double was very big and fit 2 adults and our 4 yr old. Showers and toilets were good. There was also a lounge area at the front separated from the bedroom so we could read/have a beer when the kids were asleep. There was a TV in the main room. Complementary daily newspaper (Times of India or Telegraph)

There are at least 2 restaurants on site and 3 bars. Breakfast was included for 4 of us in one of the restaurants. This was optional cereal (choice of 2) and freshly cooked omlette daily, with other courses varying from spicy sausages one day to Indian breakfast the next. We occasionally had to raid other tables for cutlery. We paid about £50 a night for the room (for all of us)

The complex boasts an indoor heated pool with diving boards and also a large secluded outdoor pool/ toddler area. Changing rooms clean and well equipped with showers, towels etc. Air conditioned gym looked good (from the outside - i didnt go in!). There is a great golf course and driving range with coaching if needed (collared top needed). Prices for a round are comparable to municipal prices in the UK. Excellent squash courts (5) and tennis courts (3 hard court and 3 clay i think). Horse riding facilities too though we didnt have time to book this for the kids.

Onsite golf shop (well known golf makes at UK prices) and separate convenience store for food etc (cheap)

We went to 2 of the 3 bars (One didnt allow kids inside but had a cool covered seating area outside with good childrens play area). The other was next to this and again was a fantastic large covered area overlooking the golf course - alcohol prices cheap! (the bars also allow take outs to your room) The club's members mingle freely with guests and we got to mix with a lot of Kolkata's young professionals and old guard. There was a wedding on 1 night and a fashion show on our last night with party after. The music went off promptly at 11 pm and they didnt seem to mind us joining them for the disco!

The numerous staff were friendly and eager to please. Reception staff were helpful (organised taxis and connected local phone calls when direct dial wasnt working for us) We were given free bottled water daily when the room was cleaned (and perhaps overcautiosly treated this with a portable UV steriliser) Laundry facilities were cheap and efficient. We tipped the 2 cleaners and the laundry man on the last night (the hotel info suggests this isnt required) but at £2 per person the tip didnt cause too much hardship.

Although other guests and members drank the tea/ coffee at breakfast we were a bit wary and drank bottled water only and brushed our teeth with this water. We remained well through the holiday.

One final point to make is that there are about 12 or so 'club' dogs on site (the owner is a dog lover!) They are well looked after and have been vaccinated and deflead. They tend to lie around asleep during the day and dont cause any trouble (2 of my kids are frightened of dogs and they werent remotely bothered by these ones) The staff tell me that they are used to deter the jackals which are active around the outskirts of the golfcourse late at night.

All in all a great experience (take mosquito repellant for the evenings spent at the outside bar areas) Air conditioned bedrooms are mosquito free if doors/ windows are kept shut.

We would definitely go back here again

This is my third visit to Tollygune club. Our accommodation was reserved by a honorable member who is also a coworker. I checked in on 9th November 2014. I left the key (card) inside and walked out to go to the reception and the door got locked with the key inside. Reception sent a person to reopen the door. He tried three cards and the third was successful. Subsequently at 8.30 p.m I left the room for dinner. I returned after about half an hour. I had 500 USD in 100 notes in an envelop in the baggage. I had to leave to Assam early morning. When I checked four notes were missing. I complained this to the management before leaving to Assam. They checked my bags and the room. I returned to the club on 12th. No one from the management informed me about the results of the investigation until I inquired on 14th morning. The answer was that they checked the camera recordings and found only three persons entering the room but on these three occasions they said I was inside the room. I do not know whether they have cameras installed inside the room too to find out I was inside the room. They further said that there is no time for them to show the recordings to me as the technicians are not available.
Okay lets say it was my mistake to keep the money in my baggage as it was my responsibility to safeguard the valuables. But I an really disgusted about the attitude of the staff. I am pretty sure they did not do a proper investigation. But the impression they showed was that they believed that I was lying. They went on arguing with me that it can never happen. They did not had the decency even to let me know the results of the inquiry.
Finally on the day I left 15th November 2014, I left the confidential reporting envelop with my complain, as it was supposed to go to the CEO.
I delayed this review hoping the CEO would take necessary action which the management failed. There is no point waiting.
I am sorry about the state such prestigious and historic place have deteriorated.

The best place to stay in Kolkata. It is far from the hustle and bustle reminding you of the Raj days. The place can only be booked if you are recommended by a member. The food at the restaurants especially the Chinese is par excellence. The golf club and swimming pools are a treat. It also has a good exercise room with a trainer Pintu always ready to help. The L'Oreal saloon is a star. We loved every bit of the stay and is cheap too, only Rs 2500 per day.

Dont be put off by the reception area (fluorescent strips, and carbon paper!!!) - the rooms we had had been modernised and were very clean, and stylish, with good bathrooms. We had been travelling effectively for 24 hours and after the chaos of Kolkata airport and traffic at rush hour, the Tollygunge is just what you need. Effectively you are staying in a private club for wealthy Kolkattans who come here to play golf, ride, exercise and hold social events such as weddings and corporate parties, or just chill out in the bar areas - and this gives you a glimpse of Indian life you wouldn't otherwise get, so relax and enjoy. The outdoor pool was great, the staff were friendly, the evening meals were delicious and very cheap and there's an upmarket mini-supermarket on site where you can satisfy your Western chocolate cravings if you need to!

Having stayed at the Tollygunge Club many times over the last 5 years ( I stay there because it is conveniently located for my business meetings at that end of town) I have grown accustomed to the bad service. The waiters are rude, indifferent, lazy and have no interest in serving you. You really have to serve yourself. The food is not good ( the Chinese restaurant is appalling) and the menu hasn't changed for years. HOWEVER once you tip the waiters - a policy that is specifically prohibited by management - they are immediately transformed into accommodating, helpful, even friendly, souls who go out of their way to look after you. The transformation is almost absurdly comical. I believe management tried to sack the entire staff a few years ago but it seems they are well unionised and can't be got rid of. It's a great pity because with an upgrade ( many rooms are being renovated), better food and a better attitude this could be a fabulous place.Instead it languishes in the 1950's..... good golf course though!

I stayed for a week or so. As mentioned before; you need a contact to get in - I was lucky to have someone who set me up. The rooms aren't designed by a top interior designer but you can sit on the chairs and sleep in the beds and the rooms are quite spacious and clean.

The great thing about Tollygunge club is the contrast between the chaos outside the walls and the calm of the well watered greens of the golf course. Even taking a walk around the golf course - the sound of the traffic on the otherside of the walls makes you happy your on the inside of the wall.

The food is very reasonably priced with bottles of beer around 50 rupees and meals equally well priced. The place isn:t aimed at tourists but rather local Indian residents who are members. The facilities are extensive and I enjoyed the pool.

The one thing wrong with the place is the tipping policy. Halfway through your stay you might find out that there is a no tipping policy but the staff are clearly after tips and when you check out the desk staff expect you to add a tip to your bill. Well it's either one or the other and the desk staff weren't happy when I didn:t give them anything. It left a sour taste upon leaving.

In conclusion it's a great place to stay and a very reasonable price but ask the management early about the tipping policy and then stick to your guns.

Hi, You should be able to use the reciprocal service but there is a procedure to be done from your Delhi club - like letter of introduction etc (best would be to check with your club first) and also do a prior booking with Tollygunge club. Your club might be the best place to get an idea on the procedure.
