I visited the place in November 2012 but back then the Transit House wasn't mentioned on Tripadvisor. I sent TA a request to add it and they contacted the TH but I guess the request was ignored. I'm happy to see that the TH is now on TA and I'm happy to be be writing this review as I've eagerly wanted to do so all this while.
Positives
1. Location
a. Rashbehari avenue is close to a bustling market place
b. Relatively clean place
c. Well-connected to other area by Metro, buses and taxis
2. Hotel
a. Clean
b. Room and bathroom not cramped
c. Old-world charm (I mean something like the 1980s, which added a bit of nostalgia for me but please don’t expect anything Victorian).
d. The breakfast, which may be included according to what you availed, is just awesome. Whatever they served was wholesome, good quality and brought a smile to our face.
Negatives:
1. You have to call the reception for heated water every time you want it.
2. While most others are fine, few of their staff appear to be quirky and arrogant.
3. Here’s the deal killer SHOCKER! I found a hole drilled into our entrance door and looking through it from the outside. It was done such that it focused straight on the bed. The hole was cocked with paper (possibly made wet and minced to fit well) which could be removed from the outside and plugged back in. I don’t blame the management for this, maybe it was done by some staff (who may, may not be there anymore). I did not report it since Kolkata had already shocked me with a very bad experience at the Kaali--ghat Temple, where I was swindled off Rs 1200/- by some well-trained pujaris. Going through the ordeal, I found that the police was also involved in this swindling business. The situation was so stressful that I chose not to bail out by paying (as little as possible) and escape the trap. I must admit that this terrible incident adversely affect my psyche to such a degree that I suffered medium degree PTSD afterwards. Anyway I was also discouraged by from reporting the door drilling problem to the manager because being so far away from home, it’s always good to first ensure that the ones you seek help from, will not harass you in turn and I wasn’t confident about his in Kolkata, either with the manager or the police (who I'd just seen conniving with conmen at Kalighat). So as a precaution, I plugged the hole from inside the room as well, so that if someone would try to peep in, the inner plug would fall into the room and I would know that someone was up to something. The breach wasn’t attempted (or the alteration was sensed by the perpetrator and abandoned.)
I do feel guilty that I never reported it to the manager; I could’ve done so via email after returning home. But this could be possible anywhere in the world, so I wanna take this opportunity to encourage everybody to inspect their hotel rooms, door, windows properly someone may be waiting for a free show of some sort at the cost of your privacy.
I leave the judgment up to the reader. It’s not a bad place and the food was definitely awesome. Those who are familiar with Kolkata may actually enjoy their stay here. It’s quite affordable and not bad, barring some scary exceptions.

1. Very close to Kalighat metro station is one of the major points (2 mins walk). Close to all areas hence a major plus point. Walking distance to the Kalighat temple - again a plus point.
2. Rooms are clean, recently painted. But the upkeep and housekeeping is very poor.
3. The service is bad. You would not get service in middle of the night so not very good from a tourist perspective. Okay for Business / Corporate travelers who want a room to spend the night.
4. The intercom conks off very often hence even to order a tea, one would have to come out of the room to shout for the service.

Stayed for a 9 days.. Had a pleasant experience.. Is located in the heart of the city with metro just a 2 min walk!
The most affordable and bang for buck place.. Surprisingly i couldnt find a single review to opt for place or not before i booked. It gives you an old-world charming experience at a much reasonable cost.
They gave me a bigger room the first day as my room was not available, so was apprehensive about their professionalism, but by the time stay was over i was longing for more as it felt like home.

I have recently visited there with my best friend on the last Sunday and got an awesome experience with her in this hotel. I really enjoyed so much and I have booked a double bed room in this hotel in reasonable price.

I agree with the previous reviewer that Transit House is a "mixed bag".
First of all, the Kalighat area doesn't have much going on except for the Kali Temple and a bustling street market with vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Luckily it is right on the north/south metro line, so getting to areas such as Park Street is fairly easy and quick.
The guest house is ok. My main complaint is that the rooms seem overpriced. It is a quirky sort of place with old style rooms and random decor. It was fairly clean (but far from spotless). The beds in my room were very firm, but I slept ok. The A/C was old and noisy, but worked ok. The staff were somewhat friendly and spoke some english.
I never took advantage of the free breakfast, but it seems like they had some decent options to choose from. Food options in the area are somewhat limited, but there is a decent South Indian restaurant around the corner called Banana Leaf that seemed popular and had ok food.
If the price had been less then I would of rated this place a little bit higher. Overall, I had a decent experience. I suppose if someone wants to stay in the Kalighat area then this place is worth checking out.
