I stayed at the sapphire suites for 2 nights. The hotel has modern amenities and is clean. Complimentary breakfast was very good. Staff are also very helpful particularly maboob the bell boy, who was able to provide sightseeing insights each morning.

This is a self proclaimed 3star facility, where you can hardly get a room.. The fact is this is a below average place at a great location... If you like the chaos of Indian cities and like to have it outside your window you will love the place.. This is in middle of one of the most crowded places in the world, the new market/esplanade...
Don't expect much of services and don't dare try their food as you have many of the best places in Kolkata within walkable distance...

Property located at the hear of city, that's the only advantage.
Super expensive compared to the amenities being offered. Pay a little extra and stay and much better properties nearby.
Rooms are small, breakfast limited choice.
Unprofessional and Unsupportive staff

From the moment we checked into this hotel we had problems with the manager and front desk staff. We booked a king size room with a city view through Expedia. Initially the manager tried to put us in a crummy room right off the lobby on the first floor. We refused that room and were then put in a room on the third floor (at the end of a hallway that was being used as a storage room) with two single beds.

On the second day of our stay we ran into a problem with our Canadian bank account and went back to the hotel to call the bank. We asked the manager if he could assist us with an international collect call and he flat out refused. When we expressed our frustration he stood up and walked away. When we tried to get the other front desk person to help us he closed his eyes and shook his head and refused to speak to us. We tried making the call from our room but the hotel phone would not allow us to make the call.

We ended up going to the Hotel Lindsay across the street and they helped us make the call to the bank. It turns out that the Hotel Lindsay has a great rooftop bar.

When we checked out the manager and his front desk staff were again very rude to us.

The Sapphire Suites calls itself a luxury hotel but we can assure you that it is not. The tiles in the bathroom are stained, the artwork is mouldy and the hallways are full of junk. The breakfast is also terrible with some stale bread and a couple of very questionable curries. Really, if this place was the only hotel in Kolkata we would not stay here again.

It does not fit into any star category. Bad smell all over the hotel, dirty linens and towels, most of all the rooms we booked were not provided. We asked for an extra bed and that was a floor mattress which was shocking.overall terrible experience.

The Sapphire Suites is a small hotel adjacent to New Market. The entrance at 15 Lindsay Street is very small and easy to miss so be sure to bring a map for your taxi driver. Standard rooms are modest in size, but do have flat screen tv, mini fridge, hot water kettle with tea and instant coffee, complimentary bottled water, in-room safe (the smallest I have ever seen - it will not accommodate a 10" laptop computer), and lots of electrical outlets. Room has queen size bed, smallish closet, small desk with chair, an arm chair with a small table and reasonable lighting. Bathroom has adequate space, ok lighting, hair dryer and standard amenities but electrical outlet is away from sink area. Hot water appears to be from a dedicated geyser as it would run cold after about 5 minutes of use. Furnishings in the room and in reception are a bit tattered and the whole place could use a thorough cleaning and/or a coat of paint. Complimentary wifi has intermittent outages. The hotel has a small (10 table?) dining area. The complimentary breakfast is served from 7-10am and includes an Indian breakfast buffet, omelettes or eggs to order, toast, etc. No yogurt or fresh fruit (other than bananas). Warning: Each table has a container of bottled water, but mine had obviously been refilled. Be sure to check before you drink!. As mentioned above the hotel is adjacent to New Market. This is a very hectic part of the old city, with all of its noises, smells and sights, so if you are not comfortable with that you should consider staying in another area such as Salt Lake. If you are a light sleeper, note that the street noise is definitely noticeable in the rooms. Also worth noting: the hotel corridors are not carpeted,so noises ricochet down the hallways; and there is a mosque just east of the hotel, so if your room is on the east side you will definitely hear the 5am call to prayer. The staff are generally courteous and helpful.
