Excellent hotel near newmarket area for Bangladeshi people. Friendly staff, clean environment, budget hotel for all type of guest. They also provide the kitchen facility and pure water supply facility for their guest also - which is markable.

I stayed at Hotel Galaxy for over three months, and I can vouch that the establishment is exceptionally well run. The owner is a wonderful fellow, who is incredibly helpful and honest. He genuinely cares about your well-fare. I was sick for some time, and he would check up on me and make sure I had medicine and water - quite a comfort when you are in a strange city and don't know anybody! The owner is simply a wonderfully good and honest person, which is such a nice thing to rely on when you are traveling.
The rooms were kept quite clean, and most of the rooms have hot water. I am very glad I chose Hotel Galaxy; it is like a little oasis in the chaos of Sudder Street.

Galaxy hotel is placed in stuart lane, its a little road that comes from sudder street, its grate because Sudder Street is very noicy but its where all the volunteers hang out so its good to be near.. everything is clean and very cheap. but the best thing Galaxy hotel has is his owner!!!!! MISS HIM! its like being at home, he takes you to yoga in the mornings and to have breakfast with all his friends (SAMOSASSSSS), He also drops you in mother house the mornings you dont feel like walking.... (eeeeevery morning at 7am)... but the best thing is that when you get sick, that happens very often, he really really takes care of you...soooo much that you dont miss home any minute.... THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING HARRY! i will come back soon and i want the bessssst room!!

When I spoke in Hindi to someone on the phone to make a booking, I was immediately told there are no rooms. When I ask for the manager and speak in English, they say let me check and then question me about my nationality and which part of India I belong to (probably to discern how 'western' I am). How does it matter where I come from? Then a third person says that we get mainly foreigners so we have to capitalize on it and that's why we ask for nationality. If this is a hotel just for foreigners and not for Indians, you should make that clear. Racism by Indians against Indians!
Now that I check again, there are no reviews by Indian guests on this page. Strange.
Can't say much about the hotel/service/food, etc. because I haven't been here but wouldn't recommend this to any Indians for sure so ignore my ratings, it's just a formality.

Sorry,
But i have to say this hotel is very overrated by former reviewers.
My stay here was cut short by myself as my room was infested with bedbugs ! Upon informing the management a rather well used spray can was quickly furnished which means two things; one that this is a common problem and two they don't have the means to deal with it as off the shelf spray does not deal with bedbug infestations.
I informed the hotel that i obviously could no longer stay in the room as i already would be facing a bill to get all my belongings professionally cleaned which is very difficult to do in Calcutta.
They told me there were no more rooms and when i checked out at about 3pm they charged me for that night too !
Can you believe the cheek of it ?no apology or anything for infesting all my stuff but also charging for it ?!
I'd stay away, you can do better in Calcutta than this...
The room was very noisy and very damp too...
Upto you...

we found this place in tripadvisor and wanted to make a reservation by telephone. We called and told them, we want a room for one or two nights and maybe would stay longer, but cant tell now for how long. They answered very unfriendly, that they would only do reservations for 5 to 6 days stay. We tried to explain, that we need the reservation to get our india visa here in thailand and he just hung up the phone. We are quite pissed by the unfriendliness of this reply.

Yes we have received a telephone call from the guest. The guest wanted to book single room for one night stay only. We told that we don't book room over telephone for one night stay. We explained to the guest that by booking one night stay we face problem if we get a long stay booking from other guest as the booking of one night stay may be in between and as such we are unable to take long stay guest and lose business. We explained to the guest that we take one or two nights stay guest only on our reception counter if any room is available when such guest comes to our hotel.for query As far as we remember no single room was available for the date the guest wanted to book the room so we politely told them that no room is available. We tried our level best to explain to the guest. about our reservation for making one night stay booking over telephone. The guest has taken it otherwise we are extremely sorry for same.We always try to help and adjust with the requirement of the guest who so ever and which ever place he or she comes from. We are sincerly sorry if that has hurt the guest

I stayed 2 months at the Galaxy Hotel and I truly appreciated my whole time there. I had a single room with western comfort and hot water for 300 rupees, which is quite cheap compared to other hotels around in Sudder Street. But above all, I deeply loved the staff. Harry the owner takes care of his customers like a father. For instance, when I was sick, he offered to drive me by scooter to the doctor to avoid walking under the hot weather. He enjoys talking with foreigners about each other culture and can offer you to taste Indian specialties. This is the kind of thing that makes you feel like home, especially for people like me staying alone in the city several weeks for work. The staff is also very helpful: I had to leave Kolkata one week and they made everything possible so that I could have exactly the same room when I come back. The reputation of the hotel keeps growing so better contact them per mail to book, you won’t regret your time there!

I stayed in Galaxy Hotel in 2 months the spring of 2011. I had a great experience. The owner of the hotel is very nice and friendly. I compare it a little bit with living with a hostfamily, except here you have your own room and decide your own time, you live your own life. If your want a nice and clean room with a nice atmosphere choose Galaxy!

I stayed here for 16 nights at Christmas. It’s like walking into your own little oasis in the mist of the chaos of Kolkata. The rooms are spotless clean with hot water which is pure luxury in December. The staff are friendly and kind. The owners are very hands on, which really makes a real difference as you can see they care about their property, really going out of their way to look after their guests. There are a variety of rooms on offer, with and without AC, rooms with and without bathrooms and also a small dorm. There is a small communal area by the door.
It’s in a perfect location just off Suddar Street, so you are close by all amenities. The metro, Park Street and New Market are all close by and it’s a 15 minute walk to Mother House if volunteering.
It’s really difficult to get a booking so booking well in advance is really advisable.

I was staying at the Hotel Galaxy during approximately 6 nights. When you travel to India you need to be previously conscious that it is not going to be that comfortable as the occidental life. So this hotel is exactly what you should expect regarding the quality and the price. The price for a non/AC room is 300Rs. per person per night. I saw different quality-designed rooms even though I think the price is the same. Harry, the owner, will give you the best room available. He is a fantastic host, takes care of you when needed. He once picked us up with his motorbike, and he booked us a taxi for our way back to the airport. So when everybody writes in their reports that Harry is a great person, you should believe it. If not, just go and check it yourself ;)

Carpeted areas. People are expected to take their footwear off and leave at the bottom of the stairs.
Some street noise in our 1st floor room but bearable, unlike the pathetic towels supplied by hotel. Best to ask for room away from road side if you’re disturbed by noise when sleeping.
