The property dates back to the 1840's in its history, but today is every bit a 5 star Hotel with all the amenities you could want. It's divided in to new and heritage sections, and I was fortunate to be in the Heritage wing. The rooms are spacious, well decorated and have some interesting touches from the history- including original girders exposed in the halls and rooms. Breakfast was excellent, and the only downside was that the main seating area (on a lower level) filled quickly with addional seating on the Lobby Level with access to the buffet. The food and service were great, although I didn't eat any meals other than the breakfast. The location is good if you want to be in the city and the entrance is on a side street off a major city street. The staff was great. From the reception counter to room attendents to the doormen it would be hard to find any better service. I hope to return for any future visit in Kolkata.

I stayed with my wife in this property for a week in January during my stay in Kolkata for a family wedding. I was pleasantly surprised & completely overwhelmed with everything in that property. I am a global traveler and have stayed in almost all groups of hotels across 60 odd countries and in India. I am a top tier member of IHG, members of Accor, SPG/Marriott and Indian hotels like Taj or ITC. But I must confess that my experience in The Lalit Great Eastern, Kolkata was the best among all my stays in most places in recent past.
Everything was so warm and so comforting in that place. Mr Chandra Mahato at front office took every care to provide us a room which we required with a nice complementary upgrade. I spoke to their sales manager Mr Ankit Sharma and he took every effort to make me feel comfortable and again called me later during my stay to see whether everything was perfect. Truly customer delight ! Another person Bodhisatwa who escorted us to the room was very cordial and tried to help us in every possible way during our stay over the week. In fact, all members of the group were happy to help. One lady (I forgot the name) also helped my wife in draping her saree beyond our expectations.
Service was impeccable, cleanliness was mind blowing and to top these up, they had the personal touch. I was not feeling like going down for breakfast one day and requested the room service to send my breakfast in the room and they did that without much pursuing from my side. I brought some food (local delicacy) from outside and requested them if they could warm it up and to my pleasant surprise, they did that for me and served with utensils & cutlery. I requested for a late check out and they accommodated that request too. It was almost a home stay with a five star comfort.
I really don’t know whether I was lucky or got some special treatment but overall the treatment, service & gesture was truly overwhelming.
More than that, the property is an antique one with heritage reflecting from all over. A nice place to get the old colonial Kolkata charm and also stay in the heart of the metro.
I won’t be able to stay in any other hotel in Kolkata in future and would surely try other Lalit hotels to check whether they have similar standard of guest service or not.

We had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay here and experienced great hospitality from the staff. We were received by very courteous staff at the airport and driven to the property by a very polite well mannered chauffeur (sorry forgot his name). As we were late we were directly taken into our room and the check in formalities were done in our room, which was really comforting as we were traveling with kids. Thanks a lot to Anita who was very helpful and briefed us on everything in the comfort of our room along with her colleague Dipu. While having dinner at the Alfresco, again we were helped by Bishwanath and he was always so helpful during our entire stay for 3 nights. The first night though there was a lot of disturbance late night due to some extremely loud guests in nearby rooms quarreling and yelling. but over all a very pleasant and memorable stay.

Before checking in, my colleagues had warned me that I am going to stay in a grand and heritage hotel. But I didn't find any grandness in the facility, process or people.
Starts with a long checking-in process where the hotel takes payment in advance , even for a corporate business traveler!
The plug points in the rooms are fantastically complicated. The 2 pin socket keeps on popping out my mobile charger and the 3 pin socket requires deft fingers to do the dangerous operation of inserting a pencil in to the earth point.
The bath room has stones laid out in the floor. Don't know the purpose but definitely it's a challenge for the house keeping to clean all the stones after every check-out.
The breakfast at Wilson cafe was great and the only saving grace.

Felt like home Hygienic place Inviting aura. Impressive service by the staff. Room charges mostly include breakfast...have buffet service...the food was really tasty and the washrooms are really well maintained The infrastructure as well as the interiors are really eye catching. Rest assured it's a great place to stay.

Lovely heritage hotel and great location - works going on when I stayed so ask for a quiet room if you're sensitive to noise.
Staff who made an impression - Dipu from concierge, Aghosh from Front Office, and the manager/supervisor of Wilson's - such a colourful personality.

Except the "name" The Great Eastern nothing else here impresses anyone. Its just another Star Category Hotel. The Breakfast buffet arrangements seriousely missing professionalism. The stone hard Idlis are arranged in such a way that the buffet dispenser has a lid which should be kept apart on a plant pot while serving! This arrangement makes the stone hard idlis to get concrete!
I stayed for 3 days and all 3 days iI pointed out the discrepencies to the concerned floor incharge at Buffet counter and the same fell on deaf ears!. Management should send these people to a Hotel in Bangalore to get more expertise in catering. The floor of the Breakfast Buffet looks like uncleaned since British Regiem. The glass roof of the Buffet breakfast area too looks like the St. John's Church !!
The Rooms are just below Average than any 5 star hotels in Bangalore. I stayed in the new 3rd block 5th floor. Room no.3525.
They should rename the Property as "La Littered, The not so Great Eastern".
The entire Hotel doesnt look like the one displayed in the picture in any angle!!!

My stay at the lalit was very comfortable during this pandemic, right from the main entrance proper cleaning and sanitization was done to ensure safety of both the guest and the staffs. They always had their masks and gloves on during service. Service all over the hotel was not hampered even with few guests. I would recommend the hotel to all and appreciate each one for taking good care. And last the food was amazing!! Thankss a ton.

I stayed at the Lalit—Kolkata for a few days this past December while on a 3-week holiday in predominantly Northern India. My room was clean and comfortable and the staff—especially the front desk staff—were very friendly, informative, and attentive to my questions and requests. The restaurant fare, though not overly inspired, was perfectly adequate for my needs. Altogether, an enjoyable hotel experience.

Worst experience I have had in 5 star hotels. I would rate this at the lowest of all the hotels I have been too. To make it worst, I just came from Taj Deccan Hyderabad and checked in to this hotel yesterday. First encounter with the staff was good but after that it’s been a nightmare. For everything you need on your room like additional towels or sheets etc, you need to call at least twice. And nothing gets to your room in less than 30 minutes. On top, they would come with the wrong item or the wrong quantity. For e.g. we ordered for four cups of tea and the staff came with just one cup. I won’t go on how the tea tasted but a five star hotel with such callous attitude, I can’t even imagine. I have just one question, with such a horrible customer experience, how are you even able to maintain your 5 star rating. Long story short, avoid this hotel at all costs.
