I have just returned from Darjeeling and writing this review. The last time I was in DARJEELING and was on MALL I made up my mind to stay in this hotel. If you consider the location I would say this is the spot where you should stay but on the same hand if you ask regarding the slandered of service and hospitality I certainly say you should not stay here. The rooms of this hotel is good bathroom is clean but could be cleaner. Which most upset me regarding this hotel is the approach of the lady who appears to be the owner/manager of this property. She behaves with the customer as if the customers should be obliged to her for all the time their stay in the hotel. Please note you can't go to this hotel with your taxi or any other transportation and you will have to walk with your all luggage to this hotel from the taxi stand. The advantage of this hotel is you need not to come to male by walking any more as this is situated in mall, but sorry I don't find any reason that why I should appreciate this hotel besides its location more so when considering the behavior of its owner/manager. Over telephone I was assured that I will be given a mall view room but when I reached to the hotel I found those rooms were given to the others when I raise that point I was told I am free to leave the hotel as I reached there about 7.30pm I was in short of options and stayed their in the given room for that single night only and on the very next morning shifted to another hotel. I am not very sure whether this is a true attitude/approach to run business.

As far as location is concerned this is arguably the best hotel in Darjeeling. The wooden floors and big windows give a beautiful cottage like feel. Only cons would be a lack of restaurant and running hot water facility. So if you at travelling in winter then it is a problem.

We traveled as a group in August 2014 and overall it was a good experience. The hotel is one of the oldest there and the infrastructure might not be great, but it more than makes up for this with its staff and location. We were a bit apprehensive because of some of the previous reviews. The management is extremely nice and cooperative. They do not serve food here - so one has to be prepared to have all meals outside, but this is not a problem - all the eateries are well within an easy walking distance. Some of the rooms overlook the mall and be sure to ask for these if available. The well known curio shops & tea shops are either right below the hotel or right opposite it. The rooms definitely need renovation but we did not find any major reason to complain as well. For the price they charge, you can't really ask for more.

During our stay at Darjeeling, we visited Chalet Hotel to meet a retired couple.

Our observations:
Truly pathetic hotel to stay at the Mall location.
Worst hotel in Darjeeling.
Rooms have no heating arrangement.
The Owner/Manager does not know ABCD of hospitality business. Rude and arrogant appearance.

The sixty-year-old lady whom we went to meet, could not sleep all night due to heavy cold as there were no heating arrangement even after repeated request made to the hotel reception.

One can find better hotels in Darjeeling with the same tariff being charged by Chalet Hotel.

Don't stay at Chalet Hotel.

Its a heritage hotel belonging to British Era. Rooms are spacious and clean with excellent view of Mall. Owner of Hotel , Mrs Jaiswal, very soft spoken and have a caring attitude towards guest. Its a perfect value for money comparing its location. One major drawback is that there is no restaurant attached but tourist have many options nearby.

Chalet may be on the mall, but it's overpriced for what it is, and the woman who runs it flat-out lied to us about hot water. None of the hotels in Darjeeling have heat, so being able to take a hot shower was a big deal for us. I asked her several times before we agreed to take the room whether hot water would be available all the time. She emphatically said "Yes, there is hot water all the time." So even though the room was Rs.1000, WAY too much, we agreed. Then, she says that we have to ask her to turn it on (which is common, but annoying), and we decided to go out for dinner first. When we returned a man came to our room (unsolicited) and told us that there was only hot water between the hours of 7 and 9am. Had we not already paid we would have left, I'm sure they were out there laughing at us.

The next morning when there was hot-ish water, there was no water pressure so I had to stand in the cold bathroom under a trickle. SO frustrating. The only good thing about this room was that the small TV had some channels that came in clear. There are plenty of guest houses in Darjeeling that offer rooms without heat or hot water, so there's really no reason to choose this one.

Note: The cover photo for this hotel is incorrect.

Well, though the title makes your expectations go high, the fact remains that only a couple of points are the main highlights of this hotel. The first and foremost has to be its location. It is located on the Mall itself. So you don't really have to make the effort of going uphill every evening or for that matter morning, for spending some quality time at the Mall. If you get the rooms facing the Mall, you can get a great view of the busy area from your bed itself. That's a treat! I doubt any other hotel in Darjeeling can offer this. The second highlight has to be the architecture of the building, which makes you feel that Darjeeling is still in its pristine and untouched condition. You are living in the time, when Darjeeling was being developed, you would feel. This is mainly because the hotel has been built on an old property from the Colonial times.
If they were the plus points, this hotel also has its fair share of negative points. 24X7 hot water is not available. The interiors of the hotel can definitely do with a bit of renovation. Cleanliness can obviously be better. The bed sheets, cushion covers and drapes that were provided to us were not completely clean, I felt. I know, we don't go to Darjeeling to watch TV, but come on, that does not mean you will give us that kind of a TV from the 90s to watch. The toilet can also be better. No complaints with the space, just the cleanliness thing. This hotel only provides accommodation, so no food available, not even tea. Considering all these aspects, where improvement can be made and is expected, I felt that the room rate was also a bit on the higher side. A one-time stay, definitely just for its location, but nothing to get you back on your next trip to Darjeeling.

We were given a room on the first floor, from where you can see the heart of the famous mall. Room was mediocre but the services & hospitality was certainly very good. They do not have a restaurant so you have to go out for your food.Being located on the mall itself, you will find many eateries nearby. The coffee shop, shopping centers & ATM, all at a hand shaking distance. The room & the furnitures should be upgraded to draw more visitors ..
