Firstly the hotel is modestly priced, this may be due to the reviews it receives. First the good. Excellent room, comfortable bed with good mosquito net. Nice big bathroom in need of a bit of fine tuning (shower door did not close and shower controls incorrectly connected, but overall the room was a good 4 star standard.
Next the grounds, expansive gardens with many trees. A lake at the bottom connects to the jungle. An electric fence stops the elephants but any other animal or reptile could enter. That’s ok even good so those who complained of seeing the odd snake are missing the point of visiting in rural Sri Lanka.
Now the not so good.
There is work going on all around. The grounds are being re landscaped but unfortunately the finished bits look like a botched job. The new ‘Pub’ as they call it resembles a characterless budget hotel reception - poorly designed and finished.

When you find the restaurant it resembles a soviet block congress hall. We did not risk dinner there but breakfast was a sorry affair, the staff got both orders wrong and served tepid tea and coffee. They all performed as if it was there first day on the job.

As others have said it offers great promise, but the improvement work looks like it’s on a tight budget and a new restaurant is badly needed. Not surprisingly there were very few guests around given the reviews. The sister hotel up the road is amazing. I think they are trying to replicate it. And failing!

This place looks impressive on arrival, with extensive grounds and statues, with a big restaurant and pool ... but - the rooms are a fair walk along meandering paths from the main buildings. The approach to the rooms is nice, but inside the rooms are dark and fairly plain. The television in my room didn’t work at all. Bed and bathroom are both reasonable. The restaurant is also too dark, so when there’s a buffet it’s impossible to see what the food on offer is - there’s no labels and staff speak very little English, so they can’t say what things are either. Even at breakfast time, the hot buffet serving dishes don’t open properly so it’s hopeless to try to see what’s inside. The chef will make an omelette though, thank goodness. It’s only okay.

I found the staff very helpful, the Hotel had a colonial feel once you got past the entrance which I thought was rather over the top. The room was spacious and clean, dinner was not that exciting but had an excellent breakfast. There was a lovely lake behind the hotel which we walked around enjoying the birds and monkies. Did see a snake which was not a problem, they are more scared of you as you are of them. Thank you

This hotel is near to the site of Anuradhapura and the fantastic sites of interest. Entrance is like something out of raiders of the lost ark with an ancient temple design. Inside the hotel is set out in a series of buildings with a colonial feel to them with the bar and restaurant close to reception. Rooms are further afield past swimming pool, gardens and winding paths. I liked the feel of the place and the lake at the end of the estate. However, there is a huge lot of work going on and needed to raise the quality of this property. The entrance drive is under construction as are most of the gardens and many of the buildings are undergoing some form of work,or need it! There are loads of mosquitos and although we were not bitten it was only because we had the air conditioning running very cold and continuously! Our shower was old and cramped and the grouting needed replacing. Others in our party had the same view. We had a sheet and a very thin blanket therefore as a consequence of running the ac we endured a cold night. The bed was comfortable and water plentiful and hot. There was no WiFi outside the bar restaurant and even there it was slow. Tea and coffee and bottled water is supplied free. Our dinner was a mix of western and Indian and was just ok. The Bombay potato was cold and there was limited selection of dishes. The kitchen like the hotel itself is a work in progress. Breakfast was better with cooked omelettes and fresh fruit available. English in the staff was poor except for management. Our drinks orders were all over the place with one lady waiting over 30 minutes for a bottle of wine! The staff were friendly and helpful once we were able to communicate our message.
Sorry for the 2 stars but this is really unfinished business with the building, facilities and staff. It could be wonderful but does need significant investment in money as well as good leadership.

Hotel felt like a building site, first impression was great, but behind the facade everything was not great. The rooms were unclean and some had bugs spiders and cockroaches, not pleasent, not every room was this bad. The staff were untrained, and didn't speak english, so difficult trying to explain any problems to them, management were not really present.

Food was okay but not great if you are vegetarian, potato's , rice and pasta, but most did enjoy it and it was fresh, the chef did try his best.

There is a bar, but its just in the dinning room and they only have beer, coke or water.

Would suggest they spend the money on the rooms to upgrade the bathrooms before they spend any more on the restoration of the site.

This Hotel is a miserable place. We stayed here for 1 night and it was the worst hotel we ever stayed at. We found it in the room; no TV, no PABX, AC not working, bathrooms are filthy as ever, very old fittings, insufficient amenities, the furniture looks very dirty. The breakfast was very poor quality (only Sri Lankan). The next day we had to purchase a Coffee Powder, Sugar and Milk Powder from a nearby shop to the hotel as the hotel said they don’t have enough stocks in the Hotel. The bathrooms are in very poor quality

The hotel felt like a building site, the first impression was great, but behind the façade everything was not great. The rooms were unclean, and some had bugs, spiders, and cockroaches, not pleasant, not every room was this bad.

There is a bar, but it’s just in the dining room and they only have beer, coke or water.

Would suggest they spend the money on the rooms to upgrade the bathrooms before they spend any more on the restoration of the site. Avoid going to this Hotel.

This hotel should be closed till they finish their construction.it was a very unpleasant stay and we were very disappointed.

I visited the hotel with my family on the 1st of August. I was surprised to find that the hotel was not ready to take visitors. The staff did not wear masks and did not take any safety precautions like handwashing. The room was well prepared but did not have WiFi.
They were managing with a skeleton staff and there was no one regularly manning the reception.
This is very risky as there is no one contactable in the hotel at night and early management.
It is sad that a reputable hotel has fallen to this level.
I kindly request the management to keep the hotel closed until it is ready to serve customers under the new Covid 19 regulations.

The initial impression was one of walking onto a film set with the old stone work and interesting buildings. Our room was adequate but the bathroom was dated and it was a long walk to the main buildings. Dimly lit so a torch would be useful. The dining room was open sided and we sat at a table near the open area where a small monkey jumped on the table at breakfast time and stole our neighbour's bread! Undergoing refurbishment and could be stunning

This was such a bizarre hotel. We stayed here during a NATGEO g adventures tour, and it was eery to arrive here. The grounds are massive and reminds me of the secret garden. The bungalows are worn down - for us the shower head blew off, missing light fixtures, and there was red stains on the sheets. Electrical outlets were dodgy, and not something an upgraded tour should book. Loads of potential but they need a thorough cleaning and some renovations to make it how it should be.

Hi, We had an evening meal in the restaurant and this was ok, nothing to rave about but nice area to eat in. We had a packed breakfast to take with us to go on safari early and this was terrible. We would have taken something from the night menu and put it in the fridge for the morning. Enjoy your trip
