When you are on holiday in Sri Lanka, you should give yourself the experience of going on safari. Big Game Camp is located in Willpatu National Park, which is not the biggest and most famous, but on the other hand it gives you the best chance of seeing the leopard. Right off the bat, let me encourage you to spend the extra $20 on a full day trip out in the jungle. The chance of seeing the rare and most attractive animals will be much greater. It is many hours spent out in the heat, but it is worth all the money. And yes - we actually SAW the leopard. 2 different and even very close. The stay at Big Game Camp is charming. The tent we stayed in was an upgrade. But you have to accept that it is primitive. Lots of zips to make sure you keep the mosquitoes out - and that's important. A toilet/bath that was dilapidated. Big Game Camp needs to look into that. Our toilet simply fell down the ramp! In addition, it actually got quite cold at night, so we had difficulty "keeping warm" as there are only sheets on the beds. I think it's rare that it's so cold at night - but we both saved ourselves a cold. In addition, Big Game Camp is, as I said, very charming. A team of locals looks after the place, and they do a lot to be climate neutral. Afternoon tea is served at 5pm and in the evening it is a wonderful experience to sit and eat by the fire and the lit torches. In addition, it takes place in pitch darkness. It gives a very special atmosphere. And just calm down. You sit at fine tables, with tablecloths and cloth napkins, cutlery, glasses and plates. Nothing is missing and the service is super nice. Then you can abstract from a few primitive things, then it is an experience not to be missed. It is worth all the money. Remember mosquito spray.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A warm welcome and great service. The Mahoora tent we stayed in had a separate living and sleeping area and a pleasant bathroom. In the evening delicious food, in a beautiful location, with torches, open fire and romantic tables.

The camp is well maintained and tents are basic but solid. The location is remote but brings you really close to nature and animals that live around the camp such as elephants, reptiles and special birds. The camp offers fun activities such as safari, games, tea time and various walks around the camp with a guide. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Respect for nature and animals is taken very seriously.

The tent is nice and spacious inside and the food is well prepared. In the evening a cozy BBQ under a tent (in bad weather) is a great location for a safari. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Tent has its own bathroom and toilet, the distance between the tents is fine.

After our visit of Wilpattu National Park, we arrived in this wonderful eco-park just outside the national park.
Since it was our honeymoon, we got an upgrade from “big game Tent” to “Mahoora Tent”. One tent with a living room, and a second tent with nice bed, and a own basic bathroom (toilet, shower and sink)
The tent is wonderful, the eco- principles are executed to a lot of details (glass waterbottles, oil lamps at the tent to reduce electricity consumption, …
A nice welcome drink, a bonfire before dinner, and a great location for breakfast.
If you want to experience glamping, this eco-lodge is the place to be.
Only negative thing was the confusion concerning the price of the glass of wine during dinner.

This Camp consisted of several large 'safari' tents and covered communal areas for reception and dining. The tents had a largish sleeping area, comfortable beds provided, and a 'washroom' area at the back. The later was small, had a rather dangerously uneven floor and was awkward to access from the bedroom. There was electric power in the tents. The various areas were linked by earth tracks that got very slippery in the rain, another hazard! There was some rudiomentary lighting to mark the tracks. Dinner was a set menu and more than adequate; beer could be obtained. Breakfast was packed up to take on the safari at dawn the next day. Given that this place is a 'camp', they did a good job; it can't be fairly compared to a 'hotel', of course. For a different kind of experience, this establishment fits the bill well. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent safari camp with lots of courteous and friendly staff. There are something like 15 Traditional safari tents with rather basic en-suite bathrooms, and camp beds. Very knowledgeable safari guides and lots of options: night walk, morning, evening, full day safari etc. Great value for money and exciting safaris!

Wonderful place close to the park entrance (10m drive). Nice to stay in tents for 1-2 nights for a change ! The tents have all basic amenities including fan, private bathroom & toilet. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. On our last morning we were treated to a private breakfast table under a tree with lots of fruit and local food ! They also do their own safaris (in fact, this appears to be how they started out more than 20 years ago). High-quality and good guide.

Stayed here for one night with a full day safari on the next morning. The staff is very kind and speaks good English. The tent itself (specially the bed) could be better. It was hot inside and the fan could only be turned up to its maximum, which made a lot of noise and squeaky sounds, or be turned off. The safari was booked through Big Camp aswell and we had a great guide + driver who where very enthusiastic themself.

As an eco-friendly campsite, we’re committed to minimizing our carbon footprint, which is why we don’t provide air conditioning. I had the same fear when i was planning to be there however i didn't see any snakes in and around the tent. There will be a staff member who comes to escort you to the dinner tables and back at night.
Hi there,
You don't have to bring a mosquito net as we have a mosquito vapourizer in the tent. However, our staff would be more than happy to provide you one if you make a request.
The wilpattu safari started in the afternoon (after lunch); there is a night walk of 30' around the camp. This could sound silly but it was a lovely experience.
"This is still camping. There's insects, frogs, even mice. The tent can be closed properly so you won't be bothered in your sleep, but the 'bathroom' is still accessible"
