Very well decorated and spacious room. The view was OK. Lobby area very well-maintained and clean. Front desk staff were very helpful, they offered free water bottles for gold members. Parking is free, which is a plus in downtown. Hallways feel safe. Downtown area was pretty much empty, maybe because of the pandemic.
My wife and I travel extensively and find ourselves in Amarillo 4 or 5 times a year. We usually stay at one of the hotels off I-40 but decided to stay downtown as a change of pace which would allow us to walk to dinner - a welcome respite after all day in the car. The hotel is a nice historic property. We were surprised to learn upon checking in that there was a $12 parking fee - there was no mention of this on the hotel website where we made our reservation. We had a pleasant walk to dinner and decided to get two bottled waters before turning in for the evening. $4.50 each for the water which is ballpark territory or higher. The next morning I wanted cream in my coffee so I went downstairs rather than make coffee in the rooom. No complimentary coffee - only Starbucks - another $6 including tip. As I already mentioned my wife and I travel quite a bit and one way we keep it affordable is to watch our budget. I can't remember another hotel that didn't have complimentary coffee in the lounge. This was not a budget friendly experience and we won't be returning.…
With Covid I expect hotels, especially major chains, to go the extra mile to make sure rooms and common spaces throughout the property are extremely clean. Seems this property did not get the memo. First room we were given was not even ready for guests. Seems someone smoked in the room so they had a machine set up trying to air it out. Room was dirty as well. When I went to advise front desk of condition of room I was given a it’s not my fault answer. Yes it is, you should know If a room is not clean. Second room we were assigned (and supposedly the last avalanche room) had not been cleaned to COVID-19 or any kind of quality standards I went around the room with Clorox wipes and the dirt and crumbs I discovered was unacceptable. When I went to look at tub, the shampoo from the last occupant was spilled all over the rim of the tub. Obviously it had not been cleaned. Bed linen did not look fresh or white clean. I put my own cover and pillow down to sleep. The only reason we did not walk away from the property was we were facing a snow storm outside and were able to find a different hotel with rooms so late at night. Especially with limited availability due to covid. Forget this property. Disgusting …
We booked this hotel for a Saturday night driving out of Dallas. We arrived late, around 10:30 pm and the room we had booked with 2 beds was unavailable. We put sheets on the rollaway and managed. Hotel was chock full so all the Covid protocols we were promised when we called ahead were really not being followed. Staff was helpful but we have found that high occupancy during a pandemic tends to make service slower and less responsive. Hotel is an old building and nicely renovated. Downtown Amarillo on a Sunday morning is a ghost town. Everything is closed. We had to drive out to the suburban area to get any breakfast.
It seems this is a hot spot for people driving through Amarillo to drive to other parts of the country. It’s a lovely building, historical, and seems to have been updated. It’s close to some good restaurants, and was very comfortable for our night there. The sofa bed pulls out, will be tight if you have older kids. Staff was very helpful and courteous.
