Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I didn't expect extras, but I also didn't expect (a) no electrical outlet in the bathroom; (b) a table in the "closet" area that kept my clothes from hanging straight; (c) broken, sharp floor tile in the bathroom; (d) a clogged shower drain that forced me to stand in soapy bathwater; (e) peeling paint; (f) no place to set a bar of soap on the sink without the soap falling into the sink; (g) carpet so dirty that my shoes muddied the bathroom floor; (h) a curtain that provided no privacy next to the door; (i) broken tiles and missing caulk around the tub; (j) bare drywall screwed to the wall next to the toilet as a patch; (k) a bathroom exhaust fan with bearings going out and which was so loud that I didn't feel I could run it at night without waking the neighbors; (l) the bathroom faucet's handle was broken and not able to be screwed on; (m) the sink's pop-up drain stopper was non-functional.

Worse yet was the filth in the toilet (see photos).

The two ladies with whom I interacted were very nice. The fellow I interacted with at checkout didn't seem to want to hear about the shower drain (I didn't even bother mentioning the rest). All I got was, "Have a nice day." No, "How was your room?"

The lot was recently sealcoated and had decent lighting. The grounds were well cared for. Thankfully, my room did not exhibit a foul odor or smell of smoke, for which I give the Highlander kudos. The mattress was comfortable (though I didn't like that there was no fitted sheet on the bed, as the flat sheet kept coming loose and bunching up). The place didn't seem like it was unsafe.

But there were quite a few things wrong with my room...and many of them are such low-hanging fruit, maintenance-wise, that there's no excuse for their not being taken care of. "Basic" is one thing; "uncared-for" is another.

If I need to spend time in Athens again, I'm not saying I wouldn't stay at the Highlander. But I'd ask to see the room first and wouldn't be shy about asking for another room if such issues again presented themselves. I try to support locally-owned businesses whenever possible, and I feel badly for leaving a review such as this one, but there's a minimum level of quality I'll accept...and, unfortunately, the Highlander didn't meet up to it this time.

If you're going to stay at the Highlander, take an outlet strip and at least one extension cord with you so you can dry your hair in the bathroom.

This is an older property, and the room seemed reasonably, but not exceptionally clean. Some things like the sink and faucets appeared to have been replaced, but at the same time, the caulking and finishing were pretty poor condition. The bed was ok. This is another case of you get what you pay for ($55+). There were some nice flowers in pots and some landscaping around the property.

Disgusting stains on bedspread. Bathroom fan cover gone and wires hanging out. Stunk. Dirty old carpet. The pics shown are a joke. People sitting outside the door smoking weed. Took the no refund loss and ran.

We stayed here because our daughter attends OU, and everything else was booked. Big mistake, carpets were filthy, I put socks on to walk on the floor because it was sticky, my white socks were black. The walls were either moldy, or just filthy. All marked up. Very outdated. And the bathroom, well, just don't stay here!

This is a budget hotel. For the price, you can't expect all the extras.

The room was clean, the wifi worked, and the bed was comfortable. For the price, I don't expect more than that.

There is a grocery store close by, and Larry's Dawg house a couple of doors down.

Good value.
