We stayed in a two room Japanese suite. What an experience. From check in to check out this is a fantastic place to stay.
They have free tea and coffee machine in the lobby, plus the use of beautiful pottery and crockery you can take to your room to use. There are also a variety of free kids games which was a really nice thought.
The room
Absolutely perfect. There is plenty of space and everything in the room has been thought through. It is modern, clean and a perfect space for a family.
The staff
Friendly, knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble.
Location
Really well situated with walking distance to a lot of attractions and amenities.
Overall this is a perfect place to stay with a family in Kyoto. If they added a pool and a gym you would never want to leave..

(I've written a novel! Sorry! Hopefully this is helpful for other uptight travellers like myself 😅)
We (1 mom, 2 teens) stayed here for 7 days in August. The original suite we booked (2 bdrm + tatami room) had only one window in the whole suite that looked at anything other than a dark brick wall. I played my 'princess' card and asked if there were other suites available that we could switch into where there were windows that actually looked out. Thankfully, there was a suite available (3 brdrm) and the hotel let us switch. There were still only two sets of windows in the new unit (one in one of the bedrooms and one in the common area, but both had excellent views) and I was beyond grateful for this switch. Windowless bedrooms are not legal in Canada so this is why I'm a bit surprised at this arrangement.
The suite itself is simple but also comfortable. There were separate air conditioning units in the common area and in each of the bedrooms. The washer/dryer is a single unit combo machine that performs both functions. I ran a full load and it took 3.5 hr to complete. We ended up just using the washer function and I hung up the clothes to dry. If you just run the washer it takes 25-40 min depending on the size of the load. I very much appreciated that laundry detergent was included!
We usually had breakfast and one other meal in the suite. The one chef knife was sharp and functional. The 2 pots and 1 frypan were sufficient for simple meals (stir-fries, pasta, omelettes, etc). The dishes, cutlery, etc were all great. The cooktop is induction (maybe?) and comes with clear instructions. There are other small appliances that you can borrow from the front desk.
We explored a few different grocery stores in the vicinity that were within a 10-15 minute walk. The cheapest one (but still very good) was the one recommended by the front desk staff (Fresco-Gojo). In a pinch you can also get decent ready-made food from any of the nearby convenience stores (7-11, Family Mart, & Lawson are all very close). The Fresco had a huge assortment of to-go items (bento boxes, sushi, desserts, etc).
As others have said, the hotel is a short walk to the Shijo subway station. I found this very convenient for work stuff that I had to do almost daily and the teens could easily jump on the subway and explore on their own. We also walked back from 'downtown' and Nishiki Market in the evening several times and always felt safe.
All in all it was a pleasant stay and I would stay here again if the opportunity arose. Bonus points if you've read this far!

Dear michelletG2672FK, We are very grateful for this detailed review and for the top score. This will certainly be helpful to other travelers. Regarding the windows in the bedrooms, as you may have noticed, it is not a part of the Japanese law. We understand that would have surprised you. Unfortunately, when the building was constructed, some room-type ended up with some bedrooms with no windows and even if we'd like to change that, it is not in our capacity. But your concern is noted and we still think of ways to solve this. We're glad that otherwise, you liked your room and made good use of the washing-machine and of the fully-equipped kitchen. (It is indeed an induction cooktop.) The different grocery stores around our hotel are diverse and we're glad to hear you found one that was right for you, and that you found our location convenient and the area safe. We look forward to welcoming you again in our hotel! Kind regards, MIMARU SUITES Kyoto Shijo Front staff team

This hotel is truly fantastic for families. The rooms are spacious, and we booked the suite with two rooms and two baths, which was a lifesaver in the morning rush! Having a washer-dryer in the room was incredibly convenient, and the living room/kitchen area provided the perfect spot for our family to unwind after exploring the incredible historical city all day. My only complaint is regarding the kitchen amenities. While it's great that the kitchen is fully equipped with basic utensils and you can grab basic condiments from the lobby (plus those beautiful plates available for free rental), some of the cookware was in poor condition. The non-stick pan shouldn't have been used in such a state. I understand that not all guests may handle the cookware with care, but perhaps the hotel could pay a little more attention to maintaining them.
Overall, this hotel sits in the prime spot of Kyoto, within walking distance to the main shopping street and a short taxi ride to Kyoto Station. The staff are all friendly, and it's definitely a place I will come back to with my family.

Great staff, great unit with lots of amenities (free coffee/tea in the AM, happy hour in the afternoon, and lemonade/orange juice through the day)! We could walk to many areas or we would take a bus to help save our feet in the heat with the stops close by. We loved having the space with a family travelling with teens and having the washer/dryer in the unit. We could also come back, warm up some lunch and cool down. Simply decorated but clean and serves a purpose.

Absolutely fantastic and just what we needed. Two couples traveling together this accommodation was in a fantastic location, so beautifully appointed, the staff were so attentive, it was so lovely having two bedrooms of a generous size, and a kitchen and living area. Two big bonuses were the free beers and sake for Happy Hour every night and exquisite local pottery for use in apartment. I cannot fault this place

I researched this specific ( there are a few of them in Kyoto area) Mimaru prior to trip to Kyoto and the 5 star reviews on various sites were definitely well deserved. Very happy / satisfied after staying here w my family. I really do not have any cons on this establishment. Stayed in a two bedroom superior suite for 5 nights.
PROS
- each staff member encountered was extremely friendly, courteous and helpful. They made a difference in making us feel welcome. If concerned about language, they all spoke English very well.
- the suite was spacious, very clean and definitely roomy enough for 4 after a long day of sightseeing. Washer/dryer combo in room was very useful. I could have packed much less based on using the washer/dryer. Housekeeping changed towels each day without us asking. They change bed linens every fourth day.
- the complimentary 3 types sake and 4 types beer were a nice touch from 5-7 EST USA time.
- the location was excellent for us. Also close to Kyoto station( two metro stops) for Shinkansen - we did a day trip to Osaka. Walking distance to other metro and bus lines. Some bus lines even stop at the corner of the hotel. Walking distance to Nishiki market, Gion neighborhood and bustling shopping streets. Hotel area quiet at night. Felt safe at all times. Walking distance to convenience stores (7-11, Lawsons) and local restaurants.
- complimentary umbrella usage. This came in handy.

The apartments/rooms were large. Ours was two western bedrooms with four beds and one Japanese bedroom with futons. We had two bathrooms, one with a deep tub. We had a large living room with a couch and coffee table. We also had a dining area with a table and chairs. The kitchen was stocked with a refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and plenty of dishes and silverware. There was a washer/dryer in the unit (it takes three hours for one load to wash and dry). I appreciated free, coffee available in the lobby, starting at 7 AM and free craft beer from 5 PM to 7 PM, daily.
My only reservation was that our type of room did not have much natural light. It won’t matter if you’re not in your room during the day.

Fantastic stay in a 2 bedroom apartment. Heaps of room for my family of 4. Washing machine being in room made it easy to do laundry as we were about 1/2 way through our 3 week trip. Staff were excellent and very helpful. They always greeted us when we left & returned. The little extras made it even better. Wife loved having proper ground coffee available for free in the reception area and everyone loved the afternoon happy hour between 5 to 7 with free beer, saki and ramune. Just over 5 minutes walk to the nearest metro.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The location is very convenient. We loved how big and comfortable the 2 br/2 ba apartment was. We traveled with only carry on baggage, so having a washer/dryer right in our room was wonderful. At the end of a long day, the last thing I'd want to do is have to go anywhere to do laundry, and at Mimaru I didn't have to! I could throw it in and relax or go out somewhere and it would be done when I got back. It was a good W/D too, better than the one we had at a different chain in Tokyo. The kitchen was well stocked, and there are additional kitchen items on loan downstairs if you need them. We took advantage and one night, instead of going out to dinner, we made pancakes at "home"! The real gem of this hotel, however, is the staff. They are so friendly and so helpful! They were happy to answer any questions and they also helped my daughter fill out the forms needed to ship a box to the U.S., gave her tape to secure the box, and the next day even remembered her as we walked back in to the hotel and asked if the box got sent off okay. They didn't need to do ANY of this, but they did, with a smile. We wholeheartedly recommend Mimaru Suites Kyoto Shijo!
