This place was a little secluded, so maybe not recommended for a solo traveller. Walking to and fro to the bath-house was a little too quiet for my liking. Having said that, I went during the Silver Week, where almost nothing else was available. Having met some people at th previous lodging who had to go to Osaka for that night, I really couldn't complain much. One problem is that sound carried in the night, so staying up late was a problem, as was watching the TV (felt rather guilty). Also, being on the ground floor, you could hear people moving about upstairs! All in all, good, but not great. Very good, if you factor in the traditional experience of a tatami room and Mrs Yasui's Japanese breakfast. Not recommended if you need privacy and a hotel-like environment. Also, no internet or phone facilities. May be a problem if you need to stay in touch.

Kyoto Craftsman Guesthouse is an excellent place to stay in Kyoto. It is actually a traditional tatame room in a home, large enough for three to stay in in Northwest Kyoto. There are toilet facilities but no bath. For that you wander a few blocks to one of the best bathhouses in Kyoto, Funikawa Onsen. 400 yen for a great bathing experience. Suichi and Hitomi really make you feel at home, and were kindness itself. They speak English well, and are very helpful in trip planning, and for information about Kyoto in general or the neighborhood. The guesthouse is located very near the Daitokuji Bus Stop, which is a long way from Kyoto Station. I wouldn't try to find it after dark, even with the excellent directions Suichi provides. With the excellent bus service in Kyoto, I find one location as good as another. They will meet you at the bus stop if you call. The immediate area around the guesthouse is wonderful, total non tourist, Japanese neighborhood. There are restaurants ( I recommend the Chinese in the pink building), cake shops, and a Lawson store, plus many more up on the street the bus stop is on. A post office is near for that all important ATM. You can walk to the Golden Temple from the guesthouse, and of course, Daitokuji is close. Like many other small Japanese businesses, they only accept cash, so be prepared.
