This is one of those wonderful pieces of roadside Americana that you stumble across in the middle of nowhere - an otherwise forlorn low-rise motel on a two-lane highway paralleling the newer interstate, with 5 shiny red cabooses in the yard. The cabooses are still definitely cabooses, with metal pipes, rails, wheels, shelves, and portholes, but have been outfitted with queen beds along with the upper and lower bunks (sleeping 4-6 people), plus cable TV and a surprisingly decent bathroom/shower stall. There's pretty much nothing to do nearby - it's amazing that the motel gets any traffic at all - and this is probably best suited for a quirky one-night stopover (about $100/night for the biggest caboose) on the way to or from the Finger Lakes, Rochester, Buffalo, or Niagara Falls. Website shows a pool, but it was closed when we were there. My 4-star rating is strictly based on its being a one-of-a-kind lodging experience, not on creature comforts, which are basically at the house-trailer level.

I was travelling with my wife and kids (11 & 14) and thought it would be a neat experience to sleep here, which it was. It's good for a novelty, I probably wouldn't want to sleep more than 1-2 nights here. Yes, space is tight but that's to be expected for a caboose. I actually thought it was spacious enough for the one night we stayed. You have to be a "camper" type and be able to rough it a little bit - let's face it, this isn't the Ritz Carlton. But if you have kids, or want to stay somewhere a little different, then this is a good choice. When I'm 80 years old I won't remember too many of the Motel 8s, or Holiday Inns I've visited, but I will remember the time we stayed in a caboose.

Can't get much cooler than sleeping in a caboose, especially when you're on a road trip with three young boys! We found this motel on http://roadtrippers.com and immediately knew that we had to make it one of our stops along the way to Canada. You can stay in the motel or one of five refinished caboose (cabeese?). Of course we stayed in a caboose (that sleeps six) and the kids loved it! In each caboose there's a small sufficient bathroom with a shower stall and a small sitting area. The "room" was clean and reasonably priced. All-in-all it was a fun experience.

After reading up on the Caboose Motel, thought this would be a really unique place to stay overnight with the thought of bringing a group next summer. Sure am glad we tried it out first. Advertised as clean and newly renovated. Certainly not recently renovated (ad says been renting since 1986 and, I do believe the last time renovated). Had a hard time unlocking the door and when we did get in, all we saw were flies. Drove to local store to buy fly swatters, yikes! The caboose was fairly clean but extremely worn/used. We could not get the heater to work (got really cold) and in the morning, no hot water to take showers. Other guests were loud, heard swearing and dogs barking. The owners should reinvest or consider closing down.

We saw this place and thought it would be fun to stay in a Caboose, turns out they have other rooms that aren't in a caboose. Our room smelled like mildew and there were dog hair all over our bed and I found and killed two fleas that were also on the bed!!! I had to spray everything with big spray and we slept in our clothes and thankfully had our own pillow and blanket. The tub had mould growing all over it. This place was a disaster. Thank goodness for cheap wine and bug spray. We both agreed we would rather slept in the car.

UGH.

This review is for the caboose lodging only, not the motel rooms. We stayed here solely for the the unique experience of sleeping in a caboose. It was the perfect place to kick off our tour of silly attractions en route to Niagara Falls from northern Virginia.

Upon arriving I was relieved to see that the grounds and exteriors of the motel and train cars were very well kept. I thought the animated motel sign, railroad crossing signs, and vintage Pepsi Sleep in a Caboose sign added a nice touch.

We had no problems with check in. The lady at the front desk was very friendly and personable. She has apparently worked there for years, but just recently took up ownership. She seemed genuine to me in that she cared about preserving the history of the train cars (unlike the owners of Wigwam Village in Cave City, KY).

We stayed in the end caboose closest to the motel called Nickel Rate Road. Inside to the left was a small bathroom with shower which worked without problem. To the right was a table with a small cable TV. A speaker on the wall was supposed to play train noises, but it wasn't working. I suppose the novelty of that would have worn off in about 5 minutes anyway.

In the middle of the caboose were 2 bunk beds pretty high up with windows looking out the top. Pretty cool! Under one of them was a sink with vanity. Under the other was a couple of locked storage areas with a ledge between them that worked fine as a shelf.

At the end of the car was a full bed on one side and a twin bid on the other. The top sheet did have some rust looking stains on it (I guess to be expected if you are staying in a 100 year old iron box that is likely to spring a leak now and again), but otherwise everything else was clean. The mattresses were thin and basic, so don't expect luxury, but we didn't have any trouble sleeping through the night.

The air conditioner was also in this area. The AC worked fine for us, but I did read in the journal that some people had trouble with the heat in the winter, so be advised. Otherwise, most of the comments in the journal were positive.

If you are a fan of goofy roadside fun like the stuff on roadsideamerica.com rather than someone just looking for a typical room for the night, I highly recommend this place. If you are someone who does not normally gravitate towards this stuff, and prefer a spacious place with a big tv, pool, free breakfast, wifi, etc. then it's probably not. You are opting to stay in train car and sacrificing space and amenties (yet paying more) for the experience. In my opinion, it is well worth it to stay somewhere out of the ordinary and support a business preserving history in such a fun way than staying in some chain motel you're going to forget about the next day.

What a great experience, probably not the most luxurious of hotel rooms but surely has to be the most fun. What a hoot, literally as there was a sound system in the caboose that played steam train sounds whoo whoo, crazy but cute. There was a lot more space than I had imagined and the small but efficient bathroom was spotlessly clean. An added benefit was that we managed to get a wifi signal.

Room Tip: Choose caboose no. 1 Nickel Rate Road as this is further away from the main road.

been here for two months with my co-workers workn up the hill behind the place, we all can say that we had a very great stay. The owners are some very good people, Matter of fact just got done with a cook out and bon fire with the folks and had a great time. I stayed in a room the whole trip, exept the first night, i got to to say I have slept in a caboose. Thats something i never thought i would say. Its pretty neat,. exept i wish my kids were here, I know for a fact they would of loved it. If your lookn for something uniqe and away from the traditional motel this is the place.

We really weren't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised with the comfort and cleanliness.

Obviously if you have no interest in trains or goofy hotels, then don't stay here, but if you are a rail-fan or just have a good sense of humor, then this is the place for you.

Perfect family place if you have some kids because there are multiple beds at different level and a small table where I guess you could eat some breakfast or whatever. There was a tiny TV, so bring a book if you want to pass some time in the evening.

The bathroom was one of those drop-in plastic pre-fabbed kind of bathrooms, which was great since who knows what an original caboose toilette would have looked like. Smallish, but clean, functional and no surprises.

We stayed at this motel 10 years ago and enjoyed it. Needed a place in the area again and so reserved without asking any questions. Well, turns out it's been sold a few times and things have gone downhill. The pool was filled in. The rooms had no ice buckets. If you want ice you go to the main office and are handed a bag of ice. The bedcovers were stained and the rooms smelled, which the owners tried to cover with Glade plug-ins.

The only positive thing I can say is that the woman in the office was very nice.

Oh, plus it cost us over $60 a night. For our second night we moved to the Days Inn in Bath and paid $40 a night for a room 10x as nice.

We drove there to xheck it out last week. There seemed to be two rooms occupied in the motel part. A neon sign said open, but only 2 angry German shepard dogs answered! There was a sign on the door with a phone number to call if you needed anything. We could see inside one caboose window, and it looked very small and rundown.
