Tropic Star Lodge is absolutely top shelf- dedicated to providing a first class experience in all aspects. The fishing guides were very experienced and well outfitted, the food and bar was 5star and the service was pleasant and attentive. Having travelled around the world, this has to be one of the finest lodges.

I disagree with the previous negative reviews regarding the “terrible fishing.” Tropic Star Lodge is home to over 300+ IGFA records. The fact that the previous disgusting reviews about TSL are solely based on the fact that the fish did not bite during your stay, is absolutely senseless. During my stay, the captains and mates during my 4 fishing day stay went above and beyond to catch fish for my friends and I, regardless if the bite was great or not. The land based staff is nothing short of superb. Before I even checked into my room the staff already knew my name, and catered to my every need. I cannot express how amazing, beautiful, and extraordinary the lodge and the staff at Tropic Star Lodge is. If you’re thinking about booking, you literally cannot go wrong.

This was my second time to visit Tropic Star Lodge. I went last summer with one of my two sons. This time, I took both for a high school graduation gift. The fishing was fantastic as usual. The first catch was a blue marlin. I'm not sure how you beat that. However, it's the service that makes Tropic Star truly stand out. Richard, Ross, Patterson and the rest of the staff at Tropic Star are top notch. The food is great and plentiful and the furnishings are incredibly comfortable, particularly when you consider that you are 100 miles from the nearest road. We will definitely return as soon as we are able.

There are no words that can say what an outstanding time our group had at Tropic Star Lodge. This was a Trip of a lifetime. It has been on my list for a long time and it did not disappoint. There is a reason it takes so long to get in!! We waited almost a year and it exceeded out expectations. Richard and his staff were outstanding. Mr. Patterson and his staff worked around the clock to make sure everyone at the lodge was taken care of and our Captains and mates on the Miss Spain and Miss Canada were outstanding. The interns working the docks where great as well. This is a huge undertaking to run a lodge of this caliber. There are a lot of moving parts and some how they pull it off so everyone has a fantastic time. We boys from North and South Carolina want to Thank you. We appreciate all the effort from the Panamanians and Tropic Star Staff, and for all the Hospitality. Highly Recommended!!!!

Tropic Star Lodge is one of the very best fishing destinations I’ve traveled to. The facilities and the staff are fantastic as well. We went during a red tide event so the inshore fishing was slow. To their credit, the Lodge gave us a chance to reschedule but we decided to go and make the best of it. Our Captain Fidel and the crew on Pollyanna worked hard and put us on more fish than any other boat in spite of the challenging conditions. Plenty of Yellowfin and Dorado and a few sailfish. Amazing all things considered. Can’t wait to go back and get my Rooster…

Dear ManOnWater, Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your review and we’re thrilled to know that Tropic Star Lodge is one of the very best fishing resorts you have traveled to. Red tide is an expected localized event that does occur in our area. It’s an algae bloom and generally it is not long lasting. This year was exceptional due to the high ocean temperature which made for tough fishing conditions for our inshore fishery. We’re so glad you joined us and despite the challenging conditions had a fantastic fishing vacation and caught some fish too. We look forward to your return trip to take on your Roosterfish. All the best wishes, Richard and Mallory White

We just returned from a visit during inshore fishing season and were blown away by our experience. The lodge is beautiful, the food and accommodations were perfect, all the staff we encountered were welcoming and professional, and our every need was met from arrival at PTY to departure.

We booked a week long stay with 6 days of fishing. I had planned on taking a few days off while the guys in my family fished but I had such a great time in the boat I fished 6 full days! We caught many different species and were impressed by the expertise of our captain and mate. A drink at the Marlin Bar and a dip in the pool is the perfect post fishing ritual.

My only regret is that I did not get a chance to use the kayaks/paddle boards or do any hiking—but world class fishing opportunities came first! If you’re not too tired from reeling in a ton of fish, I recommend the afternoon cultural tour to Piñas village with Ross. We want to express our gratitude to the staff for an amazing week and are looking forward to another visit in the future!

Dear cedarchristiansen, We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us! It’s just the best, after a day on the water, to join the other anglers for drinks and snacks at Marlin Bar, followed by a refreshing swim in the pool. Our guests often love taking a tour of the nearby village of Pinas, it’s so interesting to learn about the local cultures, flora, and fauna. We can't wait to welcome you back for more exciting fishing adventures and a relaxing paddle in the bay. Best wishes, Mallory and Richard White

We have traveled to a lot of places around the world, but this by far tops them all. Not only was it a vacation but it was an adventure. The people went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The fishing was amazing! The food was superb! Can’t say enough about this place. We are already thinking about when we can return. Caught SO many fish!!!

Dont waste your money . Despite the premium price they charge for black marlin season, Very few blacks to be found….apparently .for multiple, multiple weeks, so it’s a trend. 11 in our week total out of 17-18 boats.and I think that was higher than the previous week. Some boats caught multiple. So there is definately a difference in captains and mates.
If we would have caught a lot of other fish, it may have lessened the sting a little of paying 21k, but one 30 lb tuna and 2 very small dorados, and 1 sail, was no consolation.
We asked why they don’t post weekly fish counts, didn’t get a real answer…but you can figure out why….cuz they are so low they wouldn’t get customers. So many people were disappointed, I don’t know how the staff can look you in the eye.

Response from Ursula Marais, General Manager at Tropic Star Lodge
Responded 27 Feb 2024
Lb121564 We appreciate your feedback, as we always strive to meet our guests expectations and understand the disappointment when fishing and climate conditions do not always allow that to happen. Our black marlin season typically starts late December and runs through February when conditions are favorable as its the migration time of the black marlin at Tropic Star. Weather conditions this season have been unpredictable, one week a north wind would blow cooling the water down, the blacks would be on the bite and then it would drop off and the water temperatures would be back up, fish go down and marlin slows down, then before you know it, temperature changes back to good top water temperatures and fish come back up. El Niño is unfortunately causing extremely hot water temperatures from Central America all the way to Australia and Indonesia. I think we have been most fortunate that our wind has been on and off as it has which meant that we had some decent days and therefore some happy anglers. About 2 weeks prior to your stay we had some cooler water and therefore good marlin action and sailfish and dorado numbers were good as well creating good conditions and making predictions very hard. Unfortunately weather and sea conditions is something we can’t control. Last year during the same time we released over 78 Black Marlin in a single week from 15 boats. It is very tough for staff when fishing is difficult, they try their utmost to make sure that all our guests have a good time and our crews work very hard offshore trying to hook up on fish. Yours Sincerely Ursula Marais

There are so many great things about the lodge, I don't know where to start. We are first time visitors with no expectations. From the minute we arrived at the lodge we were treated like family. "All" of the staff were courteous and helpful for whatever we needed. The wakeup knock on the door was a beautiful way to start the day. After breakfast we went fishing. The boats were excellent as was the gear but the captain and mate made the difference when it came to catching fish. The facilities were clean, neat and well maintained. We look forward to returning in 2021. If you like to be pampered don't miss Tropic Star Lodge. Yuu will be met by Richard White, His wife and new baby. Thanks for a great time, Tom & Carol.

We look forward to seeing you back soon. Thank you for bringing your love of fishing and outdoors to Tropic Star Lodge. We enjoyed spending the week with you both. Hi there from Tropic Star Lodge! Sorry for the delay as I just saw your message. This Lodge is appropriate for a 10 year old or small fry angler. Sailfish, Roosterfish, Dorado, small Yellowfin, and various species of Snapper and inshore species are a thrill for any 10 year old to catch. He'll learn patience out on the water and also the thrill of hearing the sound of a reel screaming. Our expertly trained crews will guide him safely through reeling in a fish and navigating the boat. In the summer months kids under 16 years old fish for free. We've turned many children into avid anglers here at the Lodge. In addition to fishing, we have a beautiful hike or boat ride to a secluded pristine white beach great for swimming and snorkeling, we also organize kayak trips through the mangroves as well as a hike or bike ride to a gorgeous waterfall we have on property. And as our guest mentioned above, we also have a nearby village for guests to visit. After fishing kids also love to chase our resident lizards and crabs. During the summer months we also host hermit crab races, ping pong and pool tournaments if groups are interested. Thank you very much for your interest in Tropic Star Lodge and we hope to see you soon. Kind regards, Mallory and Richard White
