Hidden gem on beautiful beach ! First the staff was absolutely fabulous, very helpful and courteous and went out of their way to be of service. This hotel is a bit dated but the rooms clean and very spacious and the property overall was really nice. The beach was the highlight for me. Gorgeous water, beach chairs with umbrellas, very attentive bar staff who kept a drink in your hand! I think credit should be given for the upkeep because let’s face it, Covid happened and you can’t put money in if it’s not coming in. So yes you will see some broken tiles around the property and some of the outdoor tables were cracked and broken but still overall a nice property with gorgeous views and a fantastic beach. The property is also a very short walk from town to several small markets and a few restaurants. I didn’t think the food was the best I ever had but overall decent. I ate the fried snapper daily because the shrimp regardless of the style ordered wasn’t good. i ordered ceviche and it came cooked in a sauce. I ordered what was described as a dry curry style and it was more like a wet jerk style. My husband said the steak was good. I will say make sure you have snacks on hand as the kitchen has set hours and if you end up hungry during one of their closed periods you will have to walk to town for a snack because the restaurants in town don’t open until around 6:30. The market in town has what appears to be a bar that serves some bar type food. If you want to rent a golf cart rent one when you first get off ferry because the cost increased if you rented at the hotel.

The restaurant offers the most beautiful views on the island! You will want to take your time here enjoying the ocean breeze overlooking a pristine beach. Best mojitos I’ve ever had! The food was wonderful but quite pricey. Gorgeous decor - truly luxurious.

Yes, Covid happened and this hotel depends on tourists for its survival. They are trying very hard and need to be appreciated for that. We arrived long before check-in but were able to change for beach use and they kept the luggage.
First, every staff person we encountered was kind and very helpful. Rooms were being renovated and the property itself was under some construction to make it nicer. It was directly on the beach and the beach was lovely!
Chairs/umbrellas are provided and set up for you by staff. There is a lower bar area for drinks.
We ate there for breakfast and one lunch - food was ok.
We had room #1 and it needs some eventual attention. It was spacious with a beautiful view, so that made up for the minor inconveniences.
It is walkable to a lovely Italian restaurant and to the small town.
Staff will pick you up at the dock if you let them know in advance.

We did a daypass beach tour to Contadora island. The company contracts this service through the Mar & Oro hotel to supply a beach experience for their day guests.
We were under the impression that we would have everything needed for a beach experience. They provided an umbrella, a plastic beach chair, a welcome drink, a bathroom, lunch and a shower. However, they don't supply towels. We were told that the towels were reserved for their hotel guests. They seemed to have an abundance of towels but we couldn't even rent the towels. A beach experience without a towel is doable, but not what we expected after paying almost $700 for a day pass. If the hotel is going to contract to have guests, they should treat them that way and provide the same beach services their own guests receive

Our stay at Mar y Oro was nothing short of amazing and certainly exceeded our expectations. From the time we landed from the ferry and were met by the staff to take us to the hotel, to the arrival and greeting, the breathtaking view of the beach and ocean in front, to our room. All of the staff go out of their way to help you and advise on anything you need help with. We enjoyed the fresh fruit and juice each morning for breakfast, as well as choice of eggs or pancakes. Also the mouthwatering fish burgers at the beach-side cafe and the selection in the restaurant at night. We booked the ocean front suite which had its own terrace and view of the beach, which I would highly recommend for a couple. The bed was super comfortable, plenty of hot water and everything you need for this type of holidays. The beach has plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for shade if you want, or you can walk up the beach and find a quiet spot under one of the trees further up.
There are a number of other restaurants to eat at on the island and they come to the hotel and pick you up and drop you back after for no charge. We went to Gerard’s one night for dinner and to Perla Real another night, both had different menus and we loved the food. Another day we hired a golf buggy and drove around the island for a few hours and stopped at Pimiento y Sal for lunch, which we also enjoyed. There is also plenty of history and intrigue about the island that the staff will be happy to tell you about. Most of the staff have great English which was also a help to us.I can see that there are a lot of poor reviews and some of the points are true with the buggys coming and going to the boats, but it did not worry us at all. Yes there was one day that we got stung with jelly fish in the water that we did not see, but the staff were quick to help with vinegar and cold water to ease the sting. I always travel with cream for this just in case. Yes the hotel is slowly being updated with the new owners, but again we did not have any issues and were just happy with the clean beach, clear water for swimming and relaxing atmosphere. Obviously some expect more, but for us it was perfect and we cannot wait to return.

Visited Mar y Oro Hotel from October 28 to November 5. We arrived by Ferry, picked up by the hotel. Our room was an ocean view balcony, it was very clean, offering all amenities, well appointed with breakfast included. The A/C is 10/10. The staff and owner were extremely friendly. The beach is lovely offering beach towels, lounge chairs including a beach bar. They were just finishing the work on beautiful authentic beach umbrellas, and this was not a problem. We had a great day laying in the sand, playing in the water and we met new friends. We cannot say enough nice things about the staff and service who went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We felt like we were treated like family. The views of the sea and islands was spectacular. The housekeepers do a great job cleaning the rooms. The breakfast was great, coffee & tea service throughout the day, served with amazing fruit, eggs, etc., and the most delicious freshly fried Yuca (cassava). All this with a fabulous view! Thank you Mar y Oro for making our stay a great one, we can't say enough nice things about it. Appreciated their sustainable practices too. This hotel is a great location on Contadora Island, central to walking, the Ferry and Airport where we departed by Plane To the domestic airport. We will be back!

Great location with wonderful beach. Good snorkling on rocks on left side of property, mid beach. During new year holiday, there was alot of boat traffic in area. Hotel manager, Hermes, very helpful getting local fisherman for snorkle trips ($50/hr) and carts to view island ($45 /day) which you should do. Executive Beach and Largo Beach on other side of island are worth the trip. One day with cart is plenty. Staff mostly speaks good english. All staff is helpful and polite. Only downside to trip were the sea nettles, a small jellyfish, that apparently visit these waters in January during dry season. Very irritating and cut several snorkling attempts short. Treat with vinegar. Bring a pint of it.

We stayed at the Mar y Oro from Dec 9-12, 2023.
It is the best hotel location on the island, a few hundred yards from the airstrip and ferry dock.
Playa Cacique is clean and beautiful.
The property was clean and well-managed. The staff went out of their way make us comfortable. The food was great.
If you book, ask for Rm #01. 2nd flr large room with great view of the Gulf, with balcony. Best room on the property. People of Contadora are friendly. Be sure to visit "Pimienta y Sal" restaurant on Playa Largo, Juan Carlos is the owner.
Playa Executiva (north side) is where the homes of the wealthy are. The beach view is beautiful, but we were very disappointed by how dirty the beach is. Lots of plastic floating up on the beach. Obviously not regularly maintained. You should opt for Playa Cacique of Playa Largo instead.

I was there on a day pass to use their beach, eat their lunch. I loved the setting and the swim in the water, there were some jellyfish that stung me but it was nothing bad, it was high tide, and I went back swimming.
The woman who welcomed me was rude, abrupt, and made me feel unwelcome.
The other members of staff should also learn about customer service.
Perhaps smile a little?
So what is the point of going there?

I was initially concerned reading past reviews, but I thought the resort was kept up. Happy with our room and size. The shell detail in bathroom isn't the greatest and probably a poor design decision, but it didn't detract from stay. Food was also good. Golf cart rental price was high, and we never needed 4 hours, it's a small island. Overall I might not stay on contadora again, as there isn't much to do
