Detailed Reviews
Casa del Sol includes different places : one property has simple rooms and studios with kitchen but no pool, another one has 2 floor houses with common pool area. So you must make sure your booking matches the pictures you saw at the moment of booking. Paul is a very helpful contact in all matters. He picks you up and drop you off at the ferry. Casa del Sol rents golf carts which are the favourite transport device on the island (although not cheap). Casa del Sol has certainly one of the best quality/price combination on the island. Also there is one of the good/cheap restaurants of the island (Angelina) just a short walk away.

"A unique style of accommodation, individually designed rooms, situated in the residential quiet part of the island. You are in range of 2-15 minutes walk to all beaches, restaurants, bars and supermarkets" Well thats what it says on their website but for those thinking of travelling to Contadora we'd advise you not to stay B&B with Casa del Sol as the breakfast was terrible (2 hard bolied eggs from the day before + cheap white bread & sliced cheese in tupperware plus little tubs of jam & butter - that was it). Sleep was a problem as they were building a new house directly across the road and the builders started at 7.00am and worked most of the day - quiet it was not. Upside was that the Italian couple looking after Casa del Sol were very friendly and did look after us but this did not make up for the poor accommodation as we had gone there for a reast afterall. Other important things to consider for Contadora - there is no jetty when disembarking from the ferry which means you have to clamber into a small boat and then be taken to the beach with your luggage so if you have any mobility issues then this will be difficult for you + there are no ATM's on the island which means if you arrive without plenty of cash you can't pay for things (there are a few restuarants that take CCs) + the island is hilly so do not believe it's a simple 2-15 minute walk to the beaches etc and forget about cycling as you will need to hire a buggy. In the end we really did enjoy Contadora but the Casa del Sol B&B did not deliver on their promise of unique accommodation!

Response from Anke B, Owner at Casa Del Sol Bed And Breakfast
Responded 5 May 2013
Dear Martine, Thank you for taking the time to review our B&B. Our guests opinions good or bad are important, just as we feel an objective review is. It took us more than 6 months to take your reservation, we exchanged 17 e-mails along with 5 telephone conversations. The dates and the length of your reservation where constantly being changed. Contadora's lack of an ATM was discussed several times in our correspondence, along with how you get to the island and the reaffirming you that there are not all sorts of tropical disease. These are all parts of our job, which we will always try to do our best, to advise our guests. Maybe after all the questions, and all the energy and expectations you thought about Contadora, the simple quaint style of our B&B and Contadora's non commercial approach was not for you. We are indeed between 2 and 15 minutes from the beaches, located on the same 100 yard long road where all 4 of Contadora's B&B’s are situated. We do not advertise we are beach front. Contadora's highest point is only 50 meters above sea level and does have inclines. To call this hilly is a matter of personal opinion. We have three rooms all different, all with Air conditioning, private bathrooms and patios. Our breakfast consists of tea, coffee, juice, milk, cereals, brown and white bread (which can be toasted), hard boiled eggs, cheese, jams and butter. Yes, the latter are in small packets because we feel this is more hygienic, and all this we call a “continental breakfast”. Our breakfast is very popular amongst our guests. We are sorry that you have chosen such harsh words. If part of your breakfast was not to your liking, we will always try to do something about it, but to give us no chance and then write such a review is rather unfair. There was some construction on the road which is now finished. We did cooperate with the builders so as any loud noise was after 9.30 a.m. by this time most guests where at the beach. Being close to this construction was out of our hands what our guests understood. We wish you luck and the hotel too, that you choose for your next vacation. Anke and Peter, Owners of Casa del Sol

The administrators of Casa De Sol house were very nice and gave us a tour of the island when we arrived. The house could have been cleaner but the beds were comfortable and each room was air-conditioned. When we went to use the dryer they were full of bedding and the wash machine leaked. The prices of food in the store was about 100% higher than on the mainland and the restaurants were very expensive. We recommend consider bringing your own supplies.
We were disappointed in the beaches because there was so much garbage washed up on the sand with no one to clean them up. The highlight of our trip was going whale watching and snorkeling. The beaches on the mainland are better. If you want to get away and have privacy then Contadora is where to go. Also, it is a 90 minute ferry ride for $90 from Panama City.

The appearance of this property in the images are quite deceiving and the service that others claimed to have received was not really what we experienced. (we stayed in Casa Ken)
Let me be clear, we have luxury expectations and choose better end travel but this was awful. You are thinking island casita...think more Motel Six (after a trucker used it with a working girl).
We arrived on Contadora Island by ferry and Anke, one of the property owners, was not waiting with the other welcomers at the shore but up the beach where we had to drag our luggage (after carrying it over our heads in the water which you have to do if you arrive by ferry). Anke did have our luggage brought to the home while we waited to check in for 3.5 hours. The Kawasaki Mule they gave us was in pretty bad shape but functioned once you figured out the quirks.
Now for the home. Dirty sheets that smelled like smoke. Stained bedding. leaky air conditioners that soaked the bed while we slept. The bathrooms smelled like BO and the other smelled like a musty gym sock. At first we had no hot water followed by no water at all. Peter, the other owner, was helpful but this is not what we paid for. On the day we had to check out the manager was knocking on our door at 8:30 in the morning to start getting us out (who wants to be woken up at 8:30 on vacation?
The washing machine leaked everywhere and water was all over. I really don't understand what the owners are thinking...with minimal investment for decebt beds and bedding, some cable TV, and perhaps some normal towels. this place could be ok...Over all it was a smelly place that reeked of people cutting corners.
On a positive note the maintenance guy was really nice.

I went with my family for 3 nights. Rented Casa Kent and one of the Priority houses. Let´s start with Casa Kent:.4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a pool. It used to be a very nice rental property, since my family used it last year. On the positive side, the handyman was amazing, always willing to help no matter the time of the day. One of the managers, a girl, was nice enough to help sort out our issues. The other manager "Peter" not so nice. As we made a complaint about the state of the house, he was rude enough to ask us to go somewhere else. I would not recommend it.
It´s very poorly maintained. Bathrooms were disgusting: rusty, dripping, mouldy. Kitchen was dirty, sink, cutlery, glasses, stovetop, fridge. The taps were dirty and didn´t work properly. As we came in the first morning, the air conditioners from three rooms didn´t work: One was dripping constantly, the other 2 had no gas. So, they had to send the handyman for the whole first day to fix one of the rooms and then the next day, him and a team had to come to fix the other rooms.
First night a pipe broke in the kitchen and we had to call the manager at midnight. So, water was cut for the whole night and pretty much until noon. The next morning the handyman came to block the pipes so we could have water.
Gas from the kitchen ran out, the handyman had to replace the gas canister.
A coackroach landed on our bed (as we were sleeping).
The garden is full of construction materials and not safe for children to play in at all.
The pool area was ok, although very sleepery.
The BBQ area wasn´t cleaned.
The laundry area was messy and dirty.
Priority House: 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
The bathrooms had a terrible smell throughout our stay. The water that came through the hot water pipe had a terrible smell.
No hot water ever!
The pool area is nice.
Good setting on the BBQ/pool area.
We rented 2 boogies, which have been the best ones we have had on our 4 stays in the last 4 years in Contadora. After we asked them to change one of the boogies, they worked as expected.
WIFI worked great.

Hardly slept as the bed was tiny for two and the room absolutely reeked of mildew. Bath towels were stored on the toilet. "Continental breakfast" was a joke that consisted of white bread, hard-boiled eggs, American cheese slices, and cornflakes in a Tupperware in a small mini fridge. Not what I had imagined when booking a bed and breakfast.

We were assigned the "Sunset" room which is 11' x 12' cracker box on the back of house probably built in the '60's. No sunset visible because this place is in an unremarkable jungle. Paper thin walls letting in constant road noise from endless ATV-type vehicles running up and down the adjacent dirt road at all hours. Very poor lighting for reading. Mediocre double bed and two very uncomfortable bar stools for seating, furnishings one might expect in a homeless shelter. Located more than a kilometer from the beach and necessarily renting a motorized vehicle ($45/day) makes the price of this place very poor value. Breakfast is a skimpy in-room offering of some bread and cheese or dry cereal, not worth the name.

We had been here three years ago and had no complaints. Unfortunately this time the owner was a bit different. First information was not handled properly, the minute I stepped on the island she reminded me how thankful I had to be because I was given an early check in and that I had to leave at 11 am on Saturday. This information was not provided to us anytime in the email exchange while booking the apartment. Given that I have two small children and the ferry leaves at 3 pm, from the island, we had threes hours to "kill" somehow and without transportation method because she basically said we had to return the cart by 12. I understand policies but first this is not a hotel, so, clients should be informed so they can make previous arrangements. Second, she did not even offer a bathroom to change or additional transportation, not even at an additional cost.
The apartment was also evidently run down. Lack of maintenance were evident, the sink started dripping water and flooding the kitchen. The curtains were not working properly, or the sky cable even though they had a new smart tv. Even though the owner mentioned we had to take Care of the water supply, the kitchen faucet was constantly dripping, which was kind of ironic. The A/C was way too noisy. After paying almost 700 for two nights I must say it was totally not worth it. Currently in the island there are newer, better kept and better managed properties I would recommend. I repeated here because like I mentioned the first time was fine. But for sure I will not go there again.

Response from Anke B, Owner at Casa Del Sol Bed And Breakfast
Responded 19 Apr 2015
We are sorry to hear about your disappointment, but we do feel your comments are unfair. All our guests including you, receive a booking confirmation with our terms, and they include our check in (2pm) and check out (11am) times, so to say you were not informed is completely wrong, maybe you did not read our terms but you where definitely informed. Likewise when you arrived we checked you immediately in to our property, something that seems not to be appreciated, we also organized a upgraded vehicle immediately at your request. Just for your information and anyone else reading this, when we have a room/property available we always check our guests in immediately, likewise when we have no new guests coming to a property we are happy to give a late check out, all free of charge. But please realize we cannot hold a property a day early and a day late to give guaranteed check in’s and out’s. In your case this would have meant holding the property for 4 nights when you are actually only paying for two, short term property rental’s work just like a hotel I am sure you understand. Just to remind you we organized a upgrade to a big vehicle for you immediately on check in, and we informed you about check out, we gave you the vehicle longer than check out to give you time to organize your (actually 2.5 hours) before the ferry left. We also (like with all guests) stored your luggage safely from your 11am check out and brought this to you at 2.30pm to the ferry check in. So we really feel your feelings of disappointment are for us very disappointing Regarding the Apartment, we did receive each night at 10pm a WhatApp from you, the first about a flooded fridge, which we came by the next morning at 8.30am where there was not any issue, where you yourself said no problem. The next nights WhatsApp we likewise responded the next morning to a blocked sink, this we checked and found was full of waste food, so hardly a problem with the Apartment. Yes to be fair the sink tap was dripping very slightly, for this we can only apologize, and obviously not good, but things do break or go wrong, but we can assure you we are very attentive to any problems one of our property’s may have. On checking the TV this was working fine and on our visit the first morning to repair the “NOT” flooded sink the TV was working fine, as your children where watching it, so again we are not sure of the problem. Your comments that you stayed in this property 3 years ago are rather confusing as we only acquired this property in October 2014 We can assure you we take a lot of pride in our business, and can only apologize if our check out time was not to your liking, which seems to be your bone of contention. 99% of our guests understand our policies and appreciate what we try to do to help, sorry this was not the case for you, you would be most welcome back and we would be happy to give as good a service as possible to you.

The island is beautiful, other than the managers of Casa de Sol, the people are friendly and the food I spectacular. The electricity went out and the managers did not even check on customers. There was no light, no water, and no flashlights or candles. The hotel next door offered umbrellas and rides to get food during the storm. We knocked on managers door and no one ever answered. Such a terrible experience that we let then keep our money for the second night and we paid the airport extra to leave. The room was small, towels old and placed on back of toilet. They stated a continental breakfast but left hard boiled eggs and stale bread in the refrigerator which with the electricity out for over three hours did not keep things cold. Recommend the island, but not to stay at Casa de Sol

Contadora is a tiny and very, very low key island best for relaxation. We loved the extremely nice people and the awesome fresh seafood. To enjoy Contadora, it is best to stay at a higher end place and Casa del Sol is not that. For the money, the room was small, the shower stall so tiny that we kept hitting the faucets, and the breakfast was white bread and eggs stored in a mini fridge. When a storm hit and the power went out, the inn keepers were nowhere to be found. No candles, flashlights, or information for the guests. We were gratefut that the owners of the Perla Real - another property accross the street--provided us and other guests with umbrellas and transportion to town. If we ever go back, we well seek better accomodations.

Sorry to hear your comments, we feel the breakfast rather more substantial than you say, with cereals, milk, bread (brown and white) juice, cheese, eggs, marmalade, tea coffee, we always ask our guests if they need more of anything and try to suit all needs. Our rooms are the most economic rooms on Contadora, we pride our selves on keeping the rooms clean and offer all amenities. Saying that we did have to release our managers, so we would not like to make excises that maybe something was not to your liking. Since December 2014 Casa del Sol is now run by the owners Peter & Anke
