A beautiful resort located on a pristine, undeveloped stretch of beach. It’s the small details that set this place apart, from the gong announcing your arrival, warm welcome from the reception staff to the farewell on departure.
We arranged transfers from KL, which took just under 4 hours, in executive transport with air conditioning. Our rooms were on the ground floor, Serambi, with views into the garden. Each room is extremely well appointed, with large bathrooms and walk in wardrobes. We were travelling as a group, and our rooms were all located alongside each other, which was very convenient for us.
There are 2 restaurants, both offering a limited menu for evening meals. The food was delicious and chef Ann ensured that they catered for our varying tastes. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast is buffet style, and there is also a chef on site to fulfil your egg requirements. Staff are constantly topping up, so nothing runs out.
Drinks are expensive, however as this area is Muslim and no alcohol allowed, everything needs to be brought in. We brought duty free from KL and purchased soft drinks in the local 7-11, opposite the night market in Dungan.
Our thanks go to Chef Ann, for her amazing food and sense of humour. Qarl for arranging our trip to see the local attractions, Kelvi, for looking after us everyday by the adults pool. These are just a few names that we can remember from the great team of staff.
We would recommend this resort if you want to escape to a quiet, unspoilt piece of paradise.

We had a few relaxing days at the resort and were indulged by outstanding service. The Tanjong Jara staff are the single biggest contributor to the experience at this resort, followed by facilities (family pool, beach). The chefs visited us at several meals and asked for our food preferences; one even cooked a special meal for us. The staff at the pool at attentive in handling / replacing towels as well as drinking water at the pool.

We celebrated a couple of birthdays during our stay - I had informed the hotel a few hours in advance of this and they had made a note of it promptly. Upon entering our room, we noticed a pillow on the bed greeting us "Happy Birthday"; cakes accompanied the meals on respective days.

Besides that, the food is fine. I wish they would stop using plastic water bottles; provide water dispensers and reusable bottles/glasses (in a way that complies with the COVID-19 hygiene requirements). The turtle hatchery on the resort's beach is a nice addition. We got to see a baby turtle hatch during our stay, which was pretty amazing.

Overall, we will definitely return.

We stayed here for two weeks last September - I am very slow with my reviews! We had a thoroughly relaxing and fabulous time. We arrived late but sandwiches and drinks had been provided in our rooms which were very welcome. The rooms are huge - we had two adjacent rooms overlooking the sea and both rooms had two double beds in them. The setting of the hotel is beautiful and it is very well looked after. The staff, without exception, were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. They even made us little wooden signs to go on our doors. There are plenty of activities to do every day should you wish to. We visited an elephant sanctuary, went snorkelling and watched films at the outdoor cinema among other things. Food and drink at the hotel is very good but expensive so be warned. However, if you walk for about 15 minutes you can reach some little local roadside restaurants which were well worth the walk - cheap and delicious. It is worth noting that not all the local places serve alcohol so if you want wine or beer head for Restoran C B Wee as we found that they did and we also liked their food the most! The nearest big town is Dungan which took about 20 minutes to reach by taxi at a cost of about £6. The night market takes place here which is worth going to. This area of Malaysia is much less touristy than others we have visited and Dungan is quite a quiet place by comparison and so if you are looking for busy nightlife you might be disappointed.

Overall we had a great experience at Tanjong Jara Resort throughout our 4D3N stay in Feb 2022. First and foremost, we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the front office/guest liaison team, particularly Kimie for the special arrangements requested beforehand, and making us feel welcomed even before we arrived. Although check-in took a bit longer than expected (maybe due to birthday decoration arrangements), but we were glad that the room was really spacious, clean and neat. A nice touch was the handwritten card from Ramesh wishing us a great stay here.

On to the aspect of the food, breakfast at Di Atas Sungei has variety but we feel could be better eg) chicken ham for people who don’t take beef. Overall service was good, we appreciate how the team accommodated our order for take-away Yee Sang. For Nelayan, the food was fresh and good though portion could be reduced and maybe the price as well so that it could attract more customers. I particularly liked the dessert we had there – Calamansi Crème Brulee and also the Iced Coconut Parfait we had for our private dining experience. Many thanks again to Ms Izah for her excellent service that night and Chef Hadi for the sumptuous meal. Despite the strong winds, we were thankful that there was no rain despite the forecast, and it was truly a memorable experience for us with lots of joy and laughter.

One of the challenges that occurred was an unexpected short 1-hour power trip on our first night. Nonetheless, we met one of the staff doing her rounds on a bicycle handing out candles and she requested someone to deliver a spare torchlight (as ours was faulty) to our room, so all was good. We moved our chairs out and had a great time stargazing.

I've seen some reviews here regarding the cleanliness of the beach and though we also noticed that it isn't exactly spotless, but it is hard to fault the resort for this as all occupants are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the resort/beach, and rubbish do get washed up to shore as well. We also noticed that some people who utilized the daybeds by the beach ate kuaci /kwasi which is like roasted plant seeds snack, and they left the shells as well as packaging scattered all over the daybed (which the staff cleaned up by the next morning). As most of the visitors during this time are local, I hope that educators/parents can make it a point to teach them from young to protect and preserve our environment. We all have a role to play to Mother Nature and should only leave footprints on the sand.

Having been to other resorts of similar stature, our stay here at Tanjong Jara has been very pleasant and enjoyable. We felt recognized and the staff here extended great hospitality throughout, particularly Kimie who took great care of us and made sure that our stay here was smooth and special. We hope to be able to come again in the future with our family and also look forward to staying at other YTL resorts as our stay here has set our expectations. Thanks again to everyone at the resort and stay safe!

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Your comments will be shared with our entire staff especially Kimie, Chef Hadi and Izah as it will surely give them the encouragement to strive and continue to provide exceptional hospitality to all of our valued guests such as yourself. Thanks again for celebrating the special occasions with us and I am sure the staff is more than happy to attend your request. My team and I are very happy to know that you have had a wonderful staying experience with us. I would like to sincerely apologize for the power trip during your stay. Thanks for your understanding. I have raised the issues with the departments concerned and additional steps have been taken to address the problems to this from happening again. Thanks again for the feedback on the food. Just to share the plans are in place to open more food and beverage outlets for more options for the guest to choose from. We note the points on the beach and have shared the comments with the respective departments so that it may be addressed accordingly. As we are going through the monsoon period we are trying our best to cope with the current situations. However we believe this is only temporary. Rest assure we will do our best and will continue our efforts in preserving the beauty of this place. We are looking forward to welcoming you again and Tanjong Jara is committed to providing its customers with the highest level of service, and it will spare no expense in meeting that goal. Please feel free to contact me directly, Ramesh and it will be my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing Tanjong Jara Resort! Kind Regards Ramesh Krishna

This resort has somehow managed to balance the rustic feel of a ‘kampung’ while simultaneously being a world class 5 star resort.

Stayed at the Serambi Room Garden View and the views of the Garden were magical. Room was super huge ~ 500 sq. ft., with a large bathroom and an incredibly comfortable bed.

All staff members from the reception, F&B to the bellmen were world class, consistently delivering great service throughout our stay.

A million thanks to Chef Ann, for her kindness and boundless energy. She personally arranged special curated meals for us as we had a vegetarian and a toddler in the family.

The food was incredible, especially lunch at Nelayan and dinner at Di atas Sungei. The vegetarian meals like the tofu burger, and the masak lemak veggie medley were some of the best vegetarian meals I had ever.

The biggest surprise was that the local food were also incredible, ranging from nasi dagang, roti canai, laksam, bubur gandum and local kuih muih.

There were tons of things to do there, from the simple fish feeding near reception, the daily sucimurni exercise, and even the opportunity to watch the release of baby turtles.

The beach was pristine with super soft sand and the weather in September was perfect for beach activities.

Looking forward to future visits to Tanjong Jara Resort. A true gem showcasing the highest level of Malaysian Hospitality within the East Coast side of Malaysia.

Post MCO 5 nights stay with 2 kids. We stayed at the Anjung Room near the family pool. Check in was smooth and the room was very clean and ready on time. Amenities in the room itself were apt however some of the wood needed an upgrade and looked worn out.

Staff were polite and attentive, however the food quality was disappointing for a resort of this standard. Waiting time for food is long and when it finally arrived it was not great, particularly steak at Nelayan restaurant was a huge disappointment given the price charged. Seafood was fresh but didn’t taste as good as it looked.

The attentiveness of the staff compensated to an extent for the blow average quality of food and some of the staff made an extra effort in checking in on our needs around the resort when they came across. Special thanks to Raj, Ramesh, Maz, Marneh, Izwan, Jasmine, Radha, Izha and the pool boy Babul. Also thanks to Jazz Jusoh for arranging the room near to the pool which was very convenient.

Our check-in was delayed by 1 hour and 15 minutes. Upon checking into the room we found the room to be unclean, no hot water, faulty TV and a light in the bathroom not working. The only saving grace were staff like Raj, Babul and the housekeeping staff who were conscientious and friendly and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. Sadly, the excuse given was they had just opened after the MCO but we feel that for a 5* hotel they should have been more prepared!

After all the rave reviews about this resort, I had to clarify it on my own. First of all, the room and resort itself with the pristine beach facing the South China Sea would have gotten 4.5 stars albeit it needing upgrading. It was disappointing overall quality that I was appalled at. Pools very dirty, lack of support activities and so forth.
First of all, breakfast was horrible and cold. Everyone gets one choice with cold breads and a dish which I picked Américan breakfast and it was tasteless. The ala carte dinner is Overpriced for the quality served which is no way fine dining. We were lucky that we rented a car so we could drive out for some decent food as the resort is rather secluded. The nearest decent place is about 7km away and is cheaper and more worth it. Pack more!!
The most frustrating thing was the lack of information when booking that many activities are not available or only on weekends or unbookable via their network. I understand it is on a movement control period (MCO) but this should be mentioned in their offers when booking espescially in house resort activities. Thank god we stayed only for 2 nights.
I now understand why it was discounted so much and sad to say that I won't be back anytime soon till things pick up!

This is one of the most idyllic places I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit. Nothing is too much trouble for the so very friendly and most efficient staff I’ve ever come across. The rooms are huge and comfortable with fabulous views of the beach or jungle with the monkeys and water monitors sharing your resort grounds. Lots of free trips and entertainment and all the food is cooked on request. You literally just ask for anything and they cook it for you.Peaceful and quiet where nothing is too much trouble this is the ideal relaxing get away. Highly recommended

This resort is held back by bad food. Guests must eat at the resort’s two restaurants, both of which serve greasy, poorly prepared food. Both western and local dishes are bad - e.g. oily, waaay too much garlic, dripping in cheap mayonnaise, etc. That’s fine if you’re eating at McDonalds, but you’re on vacation at a fancy resort, and this is the only food option for every meal. It’s a shame because the rest of the resort is nice. The hotel itself is pretty. The pool is one of the best we’ve found in Malaysia. The beach is clean. Water is clear. The rooms are spacious and well-designed for relaxing. The rooms had some cleanliness issues - dust in the corners and the mattress smelled of b.o. But, the staff are friendly and were quick to help when we asked for it. If the owners changed up the kitchen management, the resort would be a great destination. As it stands, it’s a nice resort with lousy food.
