Borneo Highlands is a great place for relaxing with beautiful landscape & spectacular view. Weather is cool in the early morning and night.
Paying for MYR199 nett for 1st night & MYR 159nett (Par room) for 2nd night with good hot American
Breakfast, free transfer from the highland foothill (takes 20 mins on a winding road); complementary entrance to the spa during the facebook’s fans promotion is a steal.

The room is small but cozy. There isn't any telephone, fridge or television in the room.
You may watch free movie at the in-house mini theatre or visit the spa with hot and cold Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna.
Ask for Ms Margaret, if you need a good message (20% discount for guest).

They have quite a number of paid activities- Mother Nature Challenge (Mt Penrissen) half day tour to climb to the top of Mt Penrissen – the highest peak
In Kuching at 4,363 above sea level & enjoy the breathtaking view at the top, 2 hrs tour will be Bidayuh Head House Trail, Rainforest Jungle Trail, Highlight Rainforest tour etc.
We took the Highlands Rainforest guided tour MYR30nett/pax – Kalimantan View Pt, Horticulture Nursery, Organic farm etc. Actually it is not difficult to do it yourself if you have strong legs, the path are winding and hilly. It’s better to visit the Kalimantan view point in the early morning.
There’s another spectacular view will be at the horse stable where you can view the distance sea of clouds.
It is about half an hour walk from the resort taking short cut from path facing the Monastery.

We took all our meal at Annah Rais Café which only served vegetarian food, so so and good (20% discount). It will be good to include tofu or dry bean curd in their meal instead of egg.
The vegetables were from their own organic farm.

We had a good time and we will come back again with more people next time when there’s a promotion.

PS: Taxi charges - airport to Borneo highlands resort MYR75, city to BH resort MYR100, Damai beach to BH resort MYR150 (consider good rate as I got another much higher quote), waterfront to The Spring Mall MYR15,
waterfront to Airport MYR23 to MYR26.
Shuttle van Damai beach to City MYR12 to MYR15/pax

No doubt at all about the fresh air and a place to be for golfers but the resort is a bit run down. We stayed at a Birdie room (Deluxe) after persuasion from the reservation staff that the Par (standard) room would be too small for the family of four (2 a 2 c). As we were told that the resort serve only vegeterian.. we brought our instant noodles and titbits. Walking around the resort is like walking in the dark without guides. There were no maps to show the walking routesa and for all the activities come with a price. We followed the route of the golf course and the children had fun playing golf without the golf sticks... OUR DISLIKE: When we checked in there were no toilet paper so we had to walk to the reception counter to request for one (no phone in the room). It took nearly an hour b4 a unfriendly housekeeper knocked on the door to say. "NO STOCK". It was so funny to realize that the resort RUN OUT of toilet paper.. In the end we asked for tissue paper instead. Next morning we had our so called Veg bfast. A place were reserved for us and to the horror or joke when we were at the buffet line... it is not a veg buffet. WHat was served were eggs (oh.. the cook at that time do not know what is a "sunny side eggs" He said it is fried egg) Nasi Lemak without the meat, roti canai with some pumpkin at the bottom of the cold curry, bread ( 2 types with a broken down toaster), fruits and That is all folks. Soory..I did not mention there is no TV in the room.
LIKES: Cool and plenty of greenery. The air is fresh and at night it is really peaceful except with the next door kids playing soccer.

Borneo Highland, a majestic place to visit in borneo. I fall in love with this place the moment i first visited.

Sadly, the staff is poor managed. My 2nd visit, i asked for staff for directions but was answered rudely to ask people at the reception counter. I turn a deaf ear and still have positive image of borneo highland.

However, what is sad is that i called last friday, to the sales department for inquiry but a simple inquiry, the sales department fail to answer and asked to call back on Monday to speak to sales exe in charged. it was weird how they dont know their own product. but, i waited til Monday.

I called again today, hoping to get positive responds however it was a shocked how rude the staff can be. I called approximately 1.40pm and the sales executive answered me rudely, not even a greeting and that he is having his lunch and that i should call back when his done. his tone was rough and very rude.no courtesy at all.

I explained i ve been trying to call since friday, called several times in the morning but no answer and finally answered my call for the 4-5 times. i requested for inquiry on a garden wedding however once again, he answered rudely, saying its raining season no one is doing wedding at this time however i ve explained its for future reference. wedding date is not fixed. later, he complain that he has been quoating many people but they never get back so now he doesnt do wedding. information give was so vague and is explained very rudely.

I am still shocked at the treatment i ve received and till now i have not received a clear information on my inquiry expect for rude manner.

Borneo highland has a lot of potential but with poor staff management, this place can lose its beauty.

Our purpose of travelling to Kuching was a simple one. We wanted to see the organgutans at the sanctuary near Kuching. We chose to stay at Highlands Borneo Resort as we were hoping for a couple of days of peaceful luxury for the price. Instead, we ended up paying more than you would expect to pay for two nights stay at a 5 star hotel in an expensive city. What we received in return was two nights accommodation in a room with stinking drains in the ensuite (we asked about this and someone came up to spray a bit of air freshener in the ensuite and that was it. The ensuite continued to stink but even though we were the only guests in the hotel, fixing them or moving us to a room without a stinky toilet seemed way beyond them), rough sheets, no nice touches (a small tube of moisturiser of even conditioner would have been gratefully received) and a whole army of staff who seem to stand around and do very little. The saving grace of this place is its location, which is quiet and the views are quite spectacular.

We had mentioned wanting to see the orangutans in emails and to front desk staff throughout our stay. So keen were we to see them that we made sure the night before we double-checked when we needed to leave to see them. 11.00am, we were assured, was plenty of time. It would take about 35-45 minutes to get there on our way to the airport.

Fast forward to our final morning where we were up early eating our stale breakfast cereal and generally killing time until we were due to check out. A chance conversation with one of the staff revealed that, in fact, feeding time at the sanctuary was 9.0am to 10.00am! It was 8.50am and we indicated that we could be checked out in five minutes and wanted to get to the sanctuary as quickly as possible. Another 15 minutes was wasted as arranging this was all too hard. Despite the fact that a hotel car sat outside the front, they seem incapable of following our suggestion to just drive us down to the sanctuary. They also then decided to let us know that the sanctuary closed at 10.30am and had we left at the time they told us the night before we wouldn’t see anything anyway!

There was no information about anything in our hotel room. There wasn’t even a map of the resort complex to let us know where we could walk to or any pamphlets to show us what there was to do in the area. Just a whole bunch of ineffectual staff serving up stale and bland food at prices you would pay for decent food in any Malaysian city. It was the air of somewhere about to go broke.

Far from being a new traveller to Malaysia, I travel here four or five times a year and have done so for five years now. What I encountered at Borneo Highlands Report was nothing short of an embarrassment to this wonderful country. So my advice is simple. Save your money for better things. Stay in Kuching and take a day trip out to see the organgutans. At least you’ll get to see them and have money left over to donate to the cause.

The resort is about 10km away from the main road, and is uphill slope road, my chartered van driver told me that the resort not allow outside cars to enter the resort located at uphill. There is a guard house at the foothill, so i informed the guard to call for the resort van to pickup us. Actually later i was told so some of the taxi and chartered van will tell you that the resort not allow outside cars to enter. (Actually any car also can enter for check-in).

Then i force to call for the hotel pickup service, i was thinking it should be free of charge since they not allow outside cars to enter. Any they will also not inform me until i check out, the one way pickup charge is RM200, which more expensive than my air ticket that i fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching. This is a catch which spoil my holiday mode, the resort should have informed the customer in advance as the charges is ridiculous high.

I do not know whether there is private arrangement between my van driver and the resort for not telling the truth that actually any car also can enter to the hilltop, but if you are not checking in, then just need to pay RM8 for the entrance fee.

Very ordinary food, hotel service staff pleasant but no assistance on anything outside the norm.
Golf course was good but no sand in any bunker.
Felt like the resort was going out of business and was in desparate need of improvement , renovation etc

hotel plumbing was also a problem.

In summary, don't stay for the price.

Okay, this is a review based solely on my experiences with the staff at Borneo Highland Resort. I wasn’t a guest at the hotel.
The encounter with the staff began at the security gate after I had found myself in the unfortunate situation of being almost out of fuel and without cash to buy some gasoline with.
As there was no ATM anywhere close and I was perilously running out of fuel, I asked the security guard if I could maybe travel up to the reception and the staff could charge my bank card and give me the cash back. After a call to reception, he waved me through and I began the 10km trip up to the reception. Upon arriving at reception, the call between security and the hotel staff had somewhere got lost in translation and the staff were unable to charge my bank card and give me the cash back.
The staff were two girls and two guys whose names I didn’t catch. They were wonderful, so apologetic of the misunderstanding and seeking to help me resolve my predicament.
Then they offered me some of their own money from their purse/wallet in order for me to be able to purchase some gasoline and make my way back to Kuching!
It was an incredibly sweet and generous deed the staff made for me and I felt incredibly thankful to the staff for this.
On leaving they waved me off smiling and wishing me good luck as I set off back through the beautiful grounds of this resort.
As previously said, it’s not a comment from a hotel/resort guest - merely from someone who received an incredible act of kindness and sincerity from the staff at the resort.
I felt this was a way I could thank them for this and hopefully people reading this thinking of booking into the resort can be assured they will be greeted by sweet, kind and welcoming staff.
Thank you again.

I wouldn't put anyone off of staying at this place, it has great Trekking, Birding and a fantastic Golf Course [I am not a golfer but this course looks so interesting]. It also offers the prospect of just getting out into the fresh air of the foot hills.

But I would say one or two nights is enough.

Once the sun goes down there is nothing to do at all. Apart from a night drive offered there is nothing laid on by the hotel.

During the day there is a shop, well a golf shop. Apart from golf equipment and gear the only thing they sell is bottled water and that is it, nothing else is available so take your own supplies of everything.

The restaurant serves very tasty vegetarian food but as good as it is it gets a bit boring when you have the same limited offering three times a day for four days.
There was no choice offered for breakfast, every morning, two fried eggs, one hash brown, one fried tomato and some sweet baked beans followed by fresh fruit and sweet buns. Not being fried food eaters nor fans of sweet 'savouries' the fruit and coffee were fine but hardly sustaining for a four hour hike up Gng. Penrissen or for others a round of golf.

On day one, of the three beer brands on offer only one was available. On day three they had run out! just three cans!!!

The rooms suffered from the Malaysian disease of just letting things slide. Our room had not been aired, it smelt damp. The decoration was tired and the TV didn't work.

The gym was a small room with some antique equipment and a broken table tennis table along with the wonderful aroma of previous users, the door to the gym was opened once and closed very shortly afterwards.

WiFi was available in the restaurant and reception areas, how ever, the hotel didn't seem to realise that as well as WiFi there needs to be an internet service.

Be aware there is no escape from the night chorus, hundreds of frogs calling, I didn't know that they could be so loud.

If this place was run properly by a top hotelier it would be a real gem in the tourist crown of Malaysia let alone Sarawak. Come on the Mines Group support the staff there, they are a great credit to you, especially Goldie who could not have done more to make our stay as pleasurable as she could make it, get your act together.

While I did not stay there or even get past the gate at the road my experience was terrible. I wanted to play golf at the resort and after multiple attempts my hotel in Kuching was finally able to obtain the information (nothing on their website about golf reservations or rates) I made a tee time. After driving to the resort (about 75 minutes) I was told at the gate the course would be closed due to rain and clouds but I could come to the resort and enjoy their other services (spend money). They had my contact number and they knew when I was arriving but no effort was made to contact me about the course closure but instead wanted me to pay 50RM for the pleasure to ride up to the resort and see the closed course. Terrible customer service.

You could drive up to the resort but it is a very hilly drive up. They will allow you to park at the resort. Hotel transport is available upon request charging RM50.00 per head one way. You can park at the foothill or at the resort safely with no charge.
